Submitted Sable in their sights Island exercise ‘unbelievable’ experience Warrant Officer Conrad Cowan, 413 Squadron Search & Rescue Leader 14 Wing Greenwood’s 413 (Transport and Rescue) Squadron was recently afforded a very unique challenge by Parks Cana- da, through a pre-disaster planning and emergency response exercise with Parks Canada staff on Sable Island. The concept was simple: conduct live parachute descents to Sable Island in adverse weather conditions from a Hercules aircraft; provide long-term casualty care and then evacuate casualties by a Cormorant helicopter. In reality, the 42 kilometre long and one kilometre wide crescent-shaped island is located 300 kilometres off the coast of Nova Scotia, accessible only by private air charter or vessel - and shrouded in fog on a good day. In ad- dition to flooding and severe coastal storms, there is a high level of risk from wind events and the threat of destruction from storm surge. Four Greenwood search and rescue technicians pressed on, determined to complete the mission package and conduct their own survival training and pattern: first aid, fire, shelter, signals, food and water and travel. “It was an unbelievable experience parachuting over the sand dunes, the grey seals, bird colonies and wild horses. We were keenly aware the island is vulnerable to disturbances, and only trod Six Royal Canadian Navy warships have sailed from Halifax to participate in a task group exercise off the Canadian Atlantic coast November 25 to December 6. “This task group exercise will have the added value of being a part of NORAD Exercise Amalgam Dart, proving interoperability between the Royal Canadian Navy, the Royal Canadian Air Force and the U.S. Air Force,” said Rear-Admiral John Newton, Commander Maritime Forces Atlantic. RCN units participating include Her Majesty’s Canadian ships Iroquois, Ville de Québec, Halifax, Fredericton and Kingston; and Her Majesty’s Canadian submarine Windsor. The ships will be supported by CH124 Sea King helicopters from 12 Wing Shearwater. The Royal Canadian Air Force will participate December 3 to 5 with a CC130 Hercules from 8 Wing Trenton, a CP140 Aurora long-range patrol aircraft from 14 Wing Greenwood and CF188 Hornets from 3 Wing Bagotville, augmented by personnel from 22 Wing North Bay. With Sable Island now Canada’s 43rd national park, expecting an influx of visitors, it was important to test all stakeholders’ concepts of emergency response and enhance interoperability, flight planning, situational awareness and decision-making processes. “Placing pre-disaster planning at the forefront is an important component of pre-disaster implementation. It involves exercising the plan and training staff for their respective disaster roles. The disaster recovery literature clearly demonstrates populations that are better prepared recover more quickly,” said Warrant Officer Conrad Cowan, SAR-Tech leader. Operational advantages extended throughout a range of operations during this exercise: aircrews used their flight planning and oil rig platform landings to mutual air support across ocean expanses; the SAR-Techs made efficient and effective use of disaster and emergency best practices; and, Parks Canada will develop a more sustainable and disaster-resilient island, atmospheric monitoring station and staff. 14 Wing Greenwood has established a Wing Information Line at 765-1765 local 1765. The Wing Information Line will advise callers on the current status of 14 Wing during extreme weather activity, which will enable personnel to determine the current wing manning status (normal, minimum or essential personnel only). The information line will also advise which access gates may be closed to allow for the clearing of roads and parking lots. This service is provided through an auto attendant recording, which will be updated as required. A recorded message stating “Operations Normal” indicates 14 Wing is functioning under standard practices. Other recorded messages will detail any changes to the wing status. Contact emergency services for help. • If you have to get out of your vehicle while on a busy road, do so using the door away from traffic, if possible. • Draw attention to your vehicle by using traffic cones, flares or a “Call Police” sign. Searchers look for two northern hunters Search and rescue crews from 14 Wing Greenwood helped look for two overdue hunters around the Sanigut Islands near Pangnirtung, Nunavut, November 24. Nunavut Search and Rescue asked the Canadian Armed Forces to search the area at 9:16 p.m. The RCAF sent nine members on a CC130 Hercules from 413 Squadron in Greenwood and a Cormorant helicopter from Gander. The hunters were located more than 50 kilometres away: they had caught a walrus and were preparing it to bring home. Joint Task Force Atlantic called off the search when the men made it home safely. the Aurora | 14 Wing Greenwood, NS Page 5 December 2, 2013 Day marks ‘diversabilities’ Valley resources ready to serve 14 Wing family Sara Keddy, Managing editor What are your “diversabilities?” Everyone has variations in their own abilities and disabilities - whether they’re seen or unseen or permanent or temporary, says Lieutenant- Colonel Mike Adamson, 14 Wing Greenwood’s Champion for Persons with Disabilities. December 3 marks International Day for Persons with Disabilities, and Adamson’s role is to ensure “we look at increased awareness.” Along with Combined Advisory Group civilian co-chair Rita Jardine and military co-chair Captain Min Kim, this year’s awareness efforts are “twopronged. “We want to get the word out about differences here in our workforce, and also that there is assistance for families and dependents.” Adamson attended the an- nual Valley Tools for Life Conference earlier this fall, a multi-day event showcasing vendors, resources, information, equipment and programs all meant to support people with disabilities. “The Valley has phenomenal resources, from transportation to health care services, Journée des « divershabilités » and I wanted to make sure those organizations knew about our Wing Welcome event and the opportunity they have to reach our families. They all did, and there should be no one here associated with 14 Wing sitting home, wondering ‘I don’t know what to do.’” A number of 14 Wing sections – Health Promotion, Health Services, the Military Family Resource Centre and several others – have solid links with Valley-based resources, and Adamson urges anyone looking for supports or information to contact staff. The Greenwood Art Association recently presented a painting commemorating the 2011 deployment of the Royal Canadian Air Force with Operation MOBILE, the United Nations action in Libya. Major Derrick Hotte, an air combat systems officer with Long Range Patrol SET, is profiled in the work as the detachment commander for Rotation 0. Greenwood supplied subsequent rotations of dozens of personnel from 405 and 14 Air Maintenance squadrons, Wing Operations, Wing Administration and Wing Logistics and Engineering. “We received word something was coming on a Friday, we started planning to go on Sunday and we got word Thursday – ‘You’re going, and you’re going today,’” Hotte says of the move to get the Canadian contingent in the air. “We took off and we didn’t even know where we were going to land until we were halfway across the Atlantic.” From there, Hotte led a just-established deployment mission support centre into operational readiness in less than two days. The event was called Top Guns! Kids with Cancer Take Flight, part of Windsor Regional’s efforts to raise awareness for childhood cancers. September was Childhood Cancer Aware- ness Month, and this event was the culmination of activities that included a visit to the hospital by members of the Snowbirds and Commander Chris Hadfield. The Top Guns! event consisted of static displays, airplane and helicopter rides, and many other fun activities. This was a free, private event for cancer patients and their families. All of the aircraft services, food and accommodations for participants were donated by local businesses. For the static display, 405 LRP Squadron provided a Block II Aurora. In addition, the static display also consisted of a CF18 from 425 Squadron in Bagotville, a CT155 Hawk from 15 Wing Moose Jaw, and a CH146 Griffon from Petawawa. Airplane rides were provided by members of the Windsor Flying Club, which had over a dozen aircraft flying nonstop until the weather closed in. The event was a huge success. Close to 400 people were in attendance, and the 405 crew was kept busy answering questions and showing people around the aircraft. It was clear the strong Royal Canadian Air Force presence was greatly appreciated. Nestled behind the CH113 Labrador helicopter, CT133 Silver Star jet trainer/ combat support aircraft and the CP107 Argus aircraft, the QUAD radar display is the latest addition to the Greenwood Military Aviation Museum’s air park. The control panel and display scope unit is on display inside the museum. The Quad radar was so-called because it was capable of four functions: aircraft height finding, air surveillance, aircraft ground control approach (GCA) - providing the pilot direction, height and distance; and airport surveillance detection. The only two functions used by the RCAF were GCA and air surveillance. QUAD radars were designed as air traffic control units that could be moved wherever needed - important during crises and war. The QUAD radar replaced the vintage NPEN 11 radar used during the Second World War, which was, interestingly, relied upon during the Berlin Airlift in 1948 and 1949. During the early period of QUAD radar use, navigation aids were primitive and often degraded by bad weather - when precision was most required – and fuel reserves were often less than desired. To pilots, GCA was a God send! Not only were the controllers outstanding in every aspect of handling regular and emergency approaches, but they also had calm, reassuring voices that instantly settled the nerves of the most frightened pilot. And, in Canada’s worst weather, few pilots were always fearless. It would be difficult to assess the numbers of lives and aircraft saved by GCA controllers, The latest addition to the Greenwood Military Aviation Museum’s Air Park is the retired QUAD Radar. Major R.Johnson but the number would be very high. Museum curator Bryan Nelson was an air traffic control technician at Greenwood when the QUAD radar was first installed in the early 1960s. One fond memory of Nelson’s was how much easier the QUAD system was to adjust when it was necessary to change runways. And, from Chuck Tringle (Royal Canadian Air Force retired: “this thing demanded numerous maintenance hours and lots of TLC because it was old technology during the period while the new Precision Approach Radar (PAR) was being built.” Today, Greenwood has a state-of-the-art PAR, which caused the obsolescence of the QUAD radar in the summer of 2012. Then, the community stepped in. Norma Hall and her committee asked if they could run card parties every Monday night in the hall, with all proceeds being donated to the hall. This has been a great success. Our annual ticket auction and yard sale, run by Kaye and Dale Veinot, Connie Currie, Norma Hall, Doris Glavine, Barb Acker and their committee; received many donations from Kingston, North Kingston and Middleton and, thanks to all the people who attended, was the best one ever. The centre received donations from CFB Greenwood, Leon Langille at the Peoples 25:40 Church and the Lawrencetown United Baptist Church: all recognized the good work being done at the hall. The centre received an anonymous donation of nearly $4,000 and volunteers are truly thankful, Other donations totaled $873.25, and Wayne Atwater and the Municipality of Kings granted the centre $2,000. They have always been there when we have been desperate. The outside of the building was in bad shape, so we decided to try and improve that. Over $5,000 was spent on blown-in insulation, and a provincial grant and loan to upgrade the lighting systems will be paid off over the next two years. The parking lot was graveled and stumps were removed: thanks to neighbour Jack Marshall, who has leveled our gravel every time it is needed. Dave Hall and Dale Veinot redid the building’s entrance, a new water pump was installed by Lawrence Freeman and Best Buy donated $100 towards the cost of new carpeting for our A community effort is giving the North Kingston Multi Addiction Centre fresh life, with some much-needed physical repairs and lots of interest in seeing its programs continue. Submitted small meeting room. The back meeting room’s roof was rusting and leaking, so we bought the metal and Jodi, David and Teddy Ogilvie replaced the roof for us at no cost. Paul Parsons at Fraser’s Pro Home Centre helped made sure we got a good deal on siding, and we approached the 14 Construction Engineering Squadron in Bridgewater to see if it could install it as a community help project. The squadron was more than willing, but unable to do it until the spring. We needed something done now, and Dave Hall and John England volunteered to take on the project with help from Dale Veinot, Jim Sotvedt, Paul McDade, Jack Keddy, Murray Keddy, Lawrence Freeman and Peter Gubbins. Alan Bent provided the staging. The siding is about fifty per cent finished and, if it is not, the military has offered to finish it in the spring. It was decided to keep the colours of the “little red school house,” so the corners, window trim and facia have all been done in red metal to replace the paint. The metal was all purchased from Mike Cole at Community Metal, with nearly $800 of it donated as used metal. We have not finished yet, and we are still having people donating time and materials. The directors of the Multi Addiction Centre would like to thank everyone who is helping to make our building one we and the community can be proud of. In order to help you get started, we will take a look at three essential truths about money if you want to live comfortably and enjoy a prosperous future: Learn self control - The soon- er you learn the fine art of delaying gratification, the easier it will be for you to keep your finances in order. While it is simple to purchase an item on credit the minute you want it, it may be smarter to wait until you have actually saved up the money. Take control of your own financial future - Learning how to manage your own money now, will prevent other people from finding ways to mismanage it for you down the road. Some of these people may be well-meaning, but not know what they are doing. Start an emergency fund - One of personal finance’s oft-repeated mantras is “pay yourself first.” No matter what your personal situation is today, it’s wise to find some amount every month – no matter how small - in your budget to put away in an emergency fund. When you get into the habit of saving money and treating it as a non-negotiable monthly “expense,” pretty soon you will have more than just emergency money saved up: you may ac- cumulate enough cash for unexpected expenses, a vacation or even money toward the down payment for a home. Remember, by using these three simple tips, you will be one step closer to achieving your financial goals. You can also seek the advice of a financial advisor; they will analyze each situation individually and provide personalized advice and recommendations, tailored to the specific needs of each client taking into account your particular situation and the realities of military life. All are welcome! the Aurora | 14 Wing Greenwood, NS CAF send two athletes to Japanese surf rescue challenge Captain Dugald Thomson, ADAC Having endured a long season of training and competition, veteran Canadian Armed Forces CISM swimmers Captain Stephanie Dennis (405 Squadron, Greenwood) and Captain Dugald Thomson (ADAC, Halifax), would normally look forward to a short, end-of-season break after having completed the final swimming event on this year’s CAF calendar, the 2013 CISM Lifesaving Championships in Amsterdam. However, rest would have to wait: both were approached by Lifesaving Canada to join the national team in competing against some of the world’s top lifesaving athletes at the 2013 Sanyo International Surf Rescue Challenge September 19 through 23 in Onjuku Beach, Chiba prefecture, Japan. Supported through PSP’s Out Service Competition program, the pair began the journey with a trans-Pacific flight to Tokyo that crossed 12 time zones. Both having flown long range patrol on the CP140 Aurora, they were unfazed and jet-lag free, and met the Canadian team to complete the trip to Onjuku Beach, three hours by bus east of Tokyo on the Pacific Ocean. Lifesaving sport may not be widely recognized in Canada, possibly due to its laughable “beach season,” but in more sun-friendly nations such as sudoku solution page 20 Australia, New Zealand and Japan, it is a popular sport which attracts strong competitors with backgrounds in swimming, paddling, board sports and running. They compete in events ranging from beach flags (a 20 metre sprint inspired by musical chairs) to ironman (a gruelling 400 metre swim, 600 metre board and 800 metre surf ski, each interspersed by 150 metre runs). The format of the Sanyo sees each nation entering two competitors in every event, and only the top finisher from each nation earns points for his or her country. No individual awards are presented; rather, competitors contribute points towards their country’s total. Drawing on their strengths Captain Dugald Thomson (left) was one of two Canadian Armed Forces athletes participating in the 2013 Sanyo International Surf Rescue Challenge in Japan. Submitted as swimmers, Dennis and Thomson were employed by the Canadian team as the designated swimmers, competing in the surf race, the mixed surf relay, the swimming leg of the ironman relay, the swimming leg of the board relay and the towing leg of the rescue tube relay. Each competed in more than 15 races over the course of the four-day event, and represented the Canadian Armed Forces admirably, finishing as solution page 20 ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, delay your plans for the time being.
