As we move forward into this new season, we briefly look back

in Minnesota. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank all the
Brothers who support these events and who continue to support
the infrastructure of the greater Brotherhood.
I’d like to let the Brothers to know that there are still some extra

Tenth District Officers Message from Your 1st Vice DR:
Brother Walt Buckhanan, 10th District Representative has appointed committee chairmen
in accordance with district By-law Article 3. District committees are functioning but still
seeking Brothers to join, strengthen and share the workload. If you desire to participate in
a specific committee, please visit the District website and under Tenth District Page click,
the link ”Committee Chairs” for the name of a committee chairman to contact. During this
fiscal year, chapters will receive communications from District Chairman to support local
activities, gain insight on chapter accomplishments and understand our total impact to
communities as a district. Thank-you for your support and I look forward to seeing you at
our October 27 District Council meeting.
Tenth District Chaplain’s Corner:
Parliamentary Procedures serves a two-fold purpose: Provides Efficiency, and Promotes
Equity to the business meeting. By efficiency, I mean that it provides the mechanics for a
smooth flow of traffic.
Mind you, I am a strong, and staunch advocate of every member being acquainted with, and well versed in Parliamentary
Procedures. But, a mere knowledge of, and an ardent adherence to said procedures, will not insure a smooth, and
productive meeting. Mere “mechanics” will not preclude brutal disagreements, bruised egos, and bitter emotions (which are
part and parcel to many meetings on the Local, District and International level).
Our meetings (of any kind, and on any level), ALWAYS involves Brothers, yet many of our meetings are quite un-brotherly”.
We should not be coming to the table as warring factions, or nefarious nemesis, but rather, as men of “similar ideas, and
like attainments”. “Friendship” (from the Greek adelphos), literally means “one from the same womb”. “Fraternity” (from the
Latin frater), means “brother”). We purport that “Friendship is Essential to the Soul” and we emulate Damon and Pythius,
and Jonathan and David. We must be friendly to our “Brothers”, and brotherly to our “Friends”. There should be no reason
for passions to rise to “verbal barbarianism. We would never exhibit this type of disrespect on our jobs toward our
employers, and co-workers, so, how can we then, justify this behavior towards our “Brothers” and “Friends”?
As a born again Believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, I take the precepts and commands of the Bible seriously. The “Fruit of
the Spirit” is our “Vade Mecum” that serves as the grid, or filter through which we live, and relate to one another. It would be
unfair, and impossible to expect the Brotherhood to live a “Spirit filled life” and live out the Fruit of the Spirit (as listed in
Galatians 5:22-23), devoid of the Spirit of God. But, we CAN expect, and MUST insist that, EVERY Brother, not only
“memorize the Pearls, but actualize (act on), them as well. It would prove beneficial that Psalms133 and /or a very brief
devotional be read, and explained BEFORE every formal opening, to remind, prepare and guide us through our meetings.
Brothers, it is my prayer that each of us will apply the Fruit of the Spirit, and The Pearls to our inter-Fraternal relationships
in general, and our business meetings in particular.

The NAACP is the oldest & boldest; the most powerfully effective and feared civil rights organization in

We encourage those chapters who are fully paid to consider higher Life member levels such as Gold and
Platinum Life, and become leaders in an organization that OMEGA help build through the years.
We are a national organization, but our STRENGTH lies within the local branches.

I challenge each chapter to designate one Brother as your local NAACP support chairman, and have that
Brother attend local NAACP meetings to bring back relevant news to Omega. If you’re ready to accept
this challenge, send the names of those leaders to me at the contact email in my signature below. I will
contact you back so we can collectively work on voter’s registration efforts for the November 2012

giving our young men the positive influences they need to see from
a young age.
These are just a few of the Brothers who spend many
nights in the fall season preparing their teams on the road to a
championship. Three of the Brothers hope to continue their winning
ways by repeating as Super-Bowl Champs (2011) in their respective
divisions in the Will-Cook League.
This year many of the coaches are looking to continue their winning

MU XI & The Chicago CUBS
Submitted by Brother Bryce Walker
Chicago, IL - The Chicago
Cubs major league baseball
team has partnered with MU XI
Chapter through the works of
Bro. Glen Harston to reach out
to inner city youth. The city of
Chicago has recently been
beseeched with violence mainly
directed at the youth in the city.
Gun violence is at an all time
high.
The Brothers of MU XI Chapter have strived to find a way to reach out
to the youth and take them off the streets and show them that there is
more to life than just the corners of their block. The 2012 season has
seen more than 1,000 youth come out to the ball park for a fun day of
excitement and cub’s baseball. Schools participating were located on
the south, west and in the western suburban areas of the city. The
kids all seemed to enjoy themselves immensely and submitted
hundreds of letters of thanks after event.

Showing the World Omega’s Shinning Light
Submitted by Brother Kalvin Watson
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic - On May 28, 2012 neophytes from Sigma Omega
Chapter in Chicago Illinois were in the Dominican Republic to celebrate their one year
anniversary in the folds of Omega. The Brothers carried with them a set of 55 Caracolitos
Spanish language books to donate to a school. Some of the books were on African American
leaders such as Dr Martin Luther King and Gwendolyn Brooks. The students and the Teacher
were very appreciative of the act of kindness. Although the students spoke Spanish and the
letters across our chest were Greek, ΩΨΦ will forever remain as a pleasant image in the
students minds.
Johnny Baylark Jr. Omega Challenge
Submitted by Brother Kalvin Watson
Chicago, IL - Mu Xi’s Chapter Bi-Annual “OMEGA Challenge” was held again at the Veterans Administration (VA), located on Chicago’s Westside.
This event is held twice a year by the Brother’s of Mu Xi to honor Honorable Bro. James A. Sanders, Bro. Johnny Baylark Jr. (VA District Commander)
along with all of the other veterans who have given of themselves to protect our countries freedoms. This year, like many of the previous events, saw
a large turnout of veterans. Refreshments were served and giveaways were distributed
throughout the program.
During the social time the Brother’s of the chapter played board games, cards, chess and
dominos with the attendees. This was just a small token of our appreciation for their
sacrifices. The vets continuously spoke of their gratitude for the day and left us with a
single message to share “Don’t forget us”, to which Mu Xi answered and demonstrated.
We won’t ever forget you and salute you.

Chicago-Area Omegas – Proud Fathers March
Submitted by Brother LeMarr Ketchens
Chicago, IL – On June 16, 2012 the Chicago-Area Omega Coalition
had a Proud Fathers March and Rally. There was nice participation from
Omegas and friends (fathers) along with their children.
The march started at 51st & Cottage Grove (Chicago, IL) and ended at
Rainbow PUSH. The crowd took photos and Bro. Jesse Jackson, Sr.
spoke with and prayed with everyone right before he entered the
building for the 10:00 am Saturday broadcast.
The Knights of Omega were present as well paying attention to all the
positive black men. This was a great day for responsible black men in
Chicago. Why? Because after the broadcast, the men of Omega and
several fathers (with their children) went to the park on 39th and
Cottage Grove (Chicago, IL), and the Knights of Omega were taught how to properly grill. This was also time to encourage these young men
how to stay on the right path. The young men come from various backgrounds, and all get along very well.
Another life lesson was learned this day. The young men (Knights of Omega) were shown how to properly play basketball. The Omegas
played well against the young men and let them all know that it's a TEAM SPORT.

Several students were given the opportunity to share past
experiences and goals that they have accomplished. A selected
group of students from the very first group, ten years ago, were
on program. The Ten Year Students stated how they have
matured and made positive choices in life as a result in being in
the Paul Simon Institute.
The event was very successful there were students, parents, family members attending from each year of participants. The participants and
family members from the very first institute were very supportive and excited about the gathering.
The search yet continues on for commitment from other students who engaged in The Leadership Weekends. It is important to connect and
leave contact information with any member of the Paul Simon Leadership Committee.
Many of the Project Manhood mentors and chaperones that attended the Leadership Weekends over the years are yet looking for young men
to be part of the leadership weekend sessions.
Bro. Cedric Mitchell shown in the picture has done an awesome job of contacting many of the reps spanning all of the years since 2003.
Several of the Nu Chi Brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. had sons and male relatives who've attended the leadership sessions.
We must work while it is day …. For when the night comes no man will have clear vision to see what he needs to do.

Indianapolis, IN - On May 1, 2012 Zeta Phi Chapter
conducted the Empowerment Seminar. Brothers Strickland
and Stringer were just a few of the Omega Men who were
at the Economic Empowerment Breakfast and Seminar.
The seminar focused on emotional economics, saving for
retirement, buying and selling a home, resources for small
business, becoming debt free, life insurance, tax tips for
2012 and developing the entrepreneurial mindset. Many
Omega men came out to support this great community
effort to educate and empower fellow citizens who
otherwise would have been left out of this great opportunity
to become self-sufficient. Omega continues to do its part in
uplifting citizens in Indianapolis.
Indianapolis, IN – On June 14, 2012 Zeta Phi Chapter
participated with the Obama Bus Tour. The Barrack Obama
1911 RV was in town June 14, 15 and 16 2012 for the
President’s re-election campaign bid. This 1911 RV is
historical due to the main fact that the Ques and Kappa’s
have joined ranks in a nationwide call to help re-elect the
first African American President. It seems that the entire
Divine Nine is behind this effort and all are doing their part
for the up and coming November 2012 Presidential
election.

fraternities, in the fight against sexual assault and rape at RISE Above the
Silence, a program sponsored by the Bloomington, Ind.-based Middle Way House

greater awareness and voice to these societal ills through art. In the photo, Bro.

Zeta Phi Blood Drive
Submitted by Brother Donald Ratliff
Indianapolis, IN – On June 9, 2012– Zeta Phi Chapter Blood Drive. The Annual
Charles R. Drew Blood Drive was held in conjunction with the Indianapolis
Center Township Fun-Fest Day for kids. It was the perfect draw for our annual
event, where Omega was able to capitalize on 4-5 walk-ins from the event. Every
time slot was booked, and we even had to close our doors to some late-comers.
Despite the great turn-out, the screening process prevented many from actually
donating blood that morning. The Annual blood drive provided 18 pints for the
Central Indiana Blood Bank. The annual Omega Psi Phi Charles R. Drew Blood
Drive is a special reminder that we all know someone or have someone in our
family who has been affected by the big “C” Cancer or other ailments that require
blood transfusion so donate if you have not done so and if you have continue to
do so because our blood supply is at an all-time low.

State of Fraternity Luncheon
Submitted by Brother Anthony Hardy
Southfield, MI – The Brothers of Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity, Incorporated Tau Kappa Kappa Chapter
hosted our annual State of the Fraternity luncheon, where
Grand Basileus Dr. Andrew Ray was the keynote
speaker. This has been a signature event for our chapter
where we have the pleasure of
having the current Grand Basileus
come and give us a bird eye view
of where the Fraternity is today
and where we are headed. At the
luncheon we are given the
opportunity to not only ask
questions of the Supreme Council
but also to mix and mingle with
them on a personal level. The
event draws Brothers from
neighboring states as we put on a
class event and have hospitality
suites set up for the Brothers to fraternize before and
after the event. Grand Basileus Dr. Andrew Ray was
engaging and forthcoming with his vision for our
Fraternity in the near future. We were pleased with the
turnout and look forward to planning next year luncheon.
I encourage any Brother that has the resources to try and
make the luncheon because a great time was had by all.

Epsilon Rho Hosts the 78th Grand Conclave
Submitted by Arthur C. Turner, III
Minneapolis, MN - The Brothers of Epsilon Rho & Xi Chapters
would like to thank the Brothers of Omega Psi Phi for attending to
the business and festivities associated with the 78th Grand Conclave
in Minneapolis, Minnesota during July 5-12, 2012. The event began
with a welcome 4th of July Bar-B-Que for the Supreme Council in
Golden Valley, Minnesota. This gave the Minnesota Brothers a
valuable opportunity to thank the administrators who worked with the
Talented Tenth District on a regular basis. There was plenty of food,
drinks and fellowship that surrounded the visiting staff and Brothers.
On Thursday, July
5th the 78th Grand
Conclave opened
with registration.
Throughout the
conclave, the
spouses of Epsilon
Rho Chapter and
the Twin Cities
chapter of Alpha
Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Inc.
registered the “Queettes”. Epsilon Rho Chapter would like to formally thank Mrs. Gail
Toatley and her committee for their diligent efforts in support of this
successful part of the conclave. Omega Psi Phi would like to echo
our appreciation for the lovely ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Inc. participation and the hospitality they provided.
With the start of the Grand Conclave, also began the Youth
Leadership Conference (YLC). Young men arrived from across the
country to participate in workshops, presentations and team building
exercises. Brother Ricky Lewis and his committee planned and
executed a program for over 80 young men from the Twin Cities and
other traveling districts. These young people were introduced and
reminded of their responsibility to their community and that
scholarship is a key component to success. The YLC took place at
the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities campus and was supported
by local educators and mentors from the university.
The theme for the Worship Service was “Season of Re-strengthening
- Reconnecting the SOUL of Omega. “ This was an opportunity for
all Brothers to reconnect with the aim of the fraternity, Christian
Fellowship. It was headlined by Epsilon Rho’s own Brother Rev. Dr.
Earl F. Miller on Monday, July 9th. Closing the worship event was the
10th District Chaplain Brother Rev. Guy Lipkin. The messages were
focused on fellowship from one Brother to another and the vision of
the men of Omega Psi Phi. We believe this inaugural element of the
Grand Conclave will set the stage for future conclaves.
Epsilon Rho was honored to host two (2) days of creative
collaborative health care initiatives which occurred on Friday, July
6th and Saturday, July 7th. The theme for the health care initiative
was “Creating Community Health Through Collaboration”. This
theme epitomized the effort to assemble a broad based community
collaboration of providers. A specific description for each initiative is
set forth below for your consideration.
The Health Care Fair was held at the Minneapolis Convention Center
on Friday, July 6th. The Fair was organized with the assembly of
established providers such as the American Red Cross and
American Cancer Society coupled with small community based
providers. The community providers were organized into four
categories (i.e. Healthy Babies, Healthy Food, Local Medical
Resources and Reducing Health Disparities).
On that evening, the Health Initiative focused its attention on a Gala
that promoted the works of one very special former member of
Epsilon Rho Chapter and current member of Omega Chapter,
Brother Elmer Blackwell. Brother Elmer Blackwell, former Basileus
of Epsilon Rho Chapter was a man ahead of his time and a leader in
every sense of the word. The gala was sponsored by his former
employer (3M) and applauded one of Elmer’s patents, the “pop-up
tape”. Epsilon Rho Chapter and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
would like to thank 3M and its leadership for sponsoring the 78th
Grand Conclave’s Health Initiative Gala & Symposium and
celebrating a friend, brother and leader within our ranks.
On July 7th, The 5K Run / Walk, 3.2 miles, began at the Minneapolis
Convention Center, site
of the 78th Annual
Conclave. The 5K route
was designed especially
to highlight Loring Park,
one of the many innercities parks in
Minneapolis; unique
French architecture of
the Basilica of Saint
Mary – America’s first
Basilica; and the Walker
Museum and its famed
Sculpture Garden; along
with the vibrant
residential culture of
northwest Minneapolis, MN. Specifically, the highlight for Conclave
attendees and other event participants was the run or walk through
the famed Sculptured Garden, a public space that includes the iconic
Spoon and Cherry sculpture, commonly associated with the City of
Minneapolis. Approximately, 100 participants joined Mayor R.T.
Rybak, the honorary race marshal, as he welcomed participants to
the Omega Conclave, the City of Minneapolis and the 5K Run / Walk.
Each participant was provided a commemorative t-shirt, and awards
were given to the top male and female runner in specific age
categories. With temperatures in the low 80’s, an enthusiastic
crowd, and a spectacular route, the Omega 5K Run / Walk was a
highlight of the 78th Grand Conclave events.

78th Grand Conclave (cont.)
In the true spirit of the 78th Grand Conclave’s motto, “Community
Meets Character”, the host chapter partnered with a local non-profit
organization, Ready for Success. Ready for Success is a charitable
organization that is managed via an Episcopal Church and provides
interview clothing for men transitioning from exigent challenges.
This community service event collected over 100 suites, 30 dress
shirts, 88 ties and over 20 pairs of shoes. The men who receive
these garments are truly blessed and thankful for the Brothers and
sisters who gave to this worthy cause. In return for Brothers’
donations, they received a community service conclave t-shirt.
Epsilon Rho
will continue
to partner
with Ready
for Success
and continue
the
partnership
initiated
during this
successful
event.
Entertainment
filled the weekend, welcoming Brothers who traveled from across
the country and provided unique options of entertainment. To
answer the question, “what do we do during the day?” Epsilon Rho
enlisted the “DAY PARTY”. These parties started at noon and
concluded at six o’clock PM. The Friday party was co-hosted by the
Twin Cities Chapter of the National Black MBA Association and the
Saturday party was partnered with the distinguished ladies of Delta
Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. On Friday, the Brothers held an event
titled, “Ques in Comedy”. This event was hosted by Omega’s own,
Brother Joe Torry. All of the comedians who entertained the crowd,
were Brothers of our illustrious fraternity and truly set the party out!
Following the comedy show, after-parties were provided for
Brothers. On Saturday, July 7th the after party was marked by
celebrities and hosted by Miami’s on rapper/entertainer – Trina.
On Saturday and true to form, the conclave conducted its “Step
Show / March Down”. Seven teams from across the country
participated and entertained the crowd. The highlight of the show
was watching the future Omega men (sons of members) get on
stage and exhibit what their fathers taught them. It was a great
sight and inspiration for all.
The Omega Psi Phi Block Party was held in conjunction with the
community and corporate partners such as, Big Brothers – Big
Sisters, a local radio station and Minneapolis Parks and Recreation.
This signature event provided an opportunity to show the
community the “true” character of Omega. The block party allowed
people of all ages to commune with the Brothers of Omega. There
was plenty of food,
fun and family.
Community leaders
also attended to
welcome the
Brothers to their
neighborhood. It
was truly
transformational as
this community
was recently a
victim of a tragic
youth fatality.
Having hundreds of
educated and exemplary men in their neighborhood continues to be
a positive influence on the youth in North Minneapolis.
On Sunday, July 8th the Talent Demonstration occurred. Talented
youth from across the country represented our districts. This year
the demonstration announced that all participants were winners and
did not announce an overall winner, but allowed every participant to
demonstrate their talent/skill to the auditorium. Each winner also
received a monetary award for their demonstration and commitment
to their talent.
The official plenary sessions during the 78th Grand Conclave began
on Monday, July 9th and concluded on July 12th. Much was
discussed and debated while, in the true Omega spirit, we
assembled under the same roof and passionately sang our beloved
hymn and bid one another good-bye until our next meeting. Again,
the Brothers of Epsilon Rho and Xi Chapters would like to express a
heart-felt thanks to the 1,469 Brothers who attended and all that
participated in the successful execution of this tremendous event.
From the vision and leadership of Grand Marshal Brother Stuart
Turner, the 78th Grand Conclave displayed the “true” spirit of
Omega. He envisioned the Brothers’ of Omega modeling what
should and can occur within our disheartening neighborhoods
across the nation. From these efforts, the Minneapolis community
has witnessed an event full of educated African-American men with
zero violence or mischief.

Dr. Charles R. Drew Blood Drive
Submitted by Brother Marcel A. Clarke
Milwaukee, WI - On June 9th 2012 the Men of Kappa Phi Chapter fulfilled our civic duty
to Health and Wellness by hosting our Annual Dr. Charles R. Drew Memorial
Scholarship Blood Drive. This year’s event was held at the North side YMCA located
1350 W. North Avenue in the heart of Milwaukee. During the event there were 31
citizens who attempted to donate blood. As a result much needed pints of blood were
collected by the Blood Center of Wisconsin. Nearly 800 donors are needed every day to
help maintain the blood supply to hospitals served by Blood Center of Wisconsin. They
have helped provide a safe supply of blood to hospitals, and saved and enhanced lives
through our blood drives and the Wisconsin Donor Network and Wisconsin Tissue
Bank. Blood Center of Wisconsin provides all the blood needed by patients in more
than 50 hospitals and 29 counties in Wisconsin. For the last 6 years Kappa Phi
Chapter has been a proud partner with the Blood center of Wisconsin. In addition to the
blood donations many of our supporters participated in Marrow, Organ and Tissue
Registration. The event filled day ended with a drawing for a $1,000 scholarship.
Kappa Phi Little League
Submitted by Brother Marcel A. Clarke
Milwaukee, WI - After a long 17 year hiatus the Men of Kappa Phi Chapter have come
back and made a statement to Beckum/Stapleton Little. Beckum/Stapleton Little League
has been a positive tool of recreation for kids in the city of Milwaukee for years. Beckum/
Stapleton Little League which started in 1965 is currently the only Little League in the city
of Milwaukee that was established for kids of color. The league was started by former
Negro league baseball player James Beckum. During the last forty plus years the league
has flourished and continued to produce quality athletes both male and female in
Milwaukee. The kids in this league have played in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas City and
Chicago just to name a few. This great work has been successful because of the many
volunteers and sponsors who have dedicated their lives to the mission of providing
guidance and direction to our youth. During the 2012 season the Men of Kappa Phi
Chapter decided it was time to reconnect with Beckum/Stapleton Little League. The
Chapter went into their coffers and sponsored two teams this year. Those teams included
the Tee Ball Omega Stars and the Major League Omega Stars. The chapter also had
several of our members volunteer as coaches and board members. Our very own Brother
Chad Davis (94’) coached the Tee Ball Omega Stars and Brother Anthony Rice (78’)
coached the Tee Ball Monarchs. In addition, Brother Marcel Clarke sits on the board of
directors and Past DR Glenn Matthews is the President of the Board of Directors.
Together the Men of Kappa Phi Chapter will continue to dedicate our time and efforts to
inner city baseball and the teachings of sportsmanship, commitment and dedication.

Annual Adopt a Poll Site
Submitted by Brother Marcel A. Clarke
Milwaukee, WI - On June 5th, 2012 the Men of Kappa Phi Chapter performed
service at our Annual Adopt a Poll Site. For each election in the calendar year
the Men of Kappa Phi Chapter volunteer their services by operating a 3 ward
poll location. This event marked the 4th election that the chapter has
participated in this year. The poll location held at 38th Street School in
Milwaukee covers the 15th District with Wards 152, 153 and 154. The election
was based on the highly touted Wisconsin Recall Election between Governor
Scott Walker and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. During the event Kappa Phi
Chapter serviced over 2,000 voters. In addition, the Chapter registered 317 new
voters. The task was huge and the Men of Kappa Phi Chapter persevered to
assure that everyone’s voice was heard. Voter registration committee chairmen
Brother Donald Stone and Brother Relious Stepherson III called the event an
overwhelming success and thanked the 22 Brothers of the Chapter for their
participation. The chapter is now gearing up for the November Presidential
Election in which the turnout is expected to triple in both registered voters and
newly registered voters.
