VOLUME XV1I, ISSUE II The Communique JUNE—SEPTEMBER 2016 A newsletter for the parishioners of St. Ann Catholic Parish A C e l e b r at i o n To R e m e m b e r ! Prayer on the Go! Dear Lord, Help us to make stewardship a way of life for us, our families, and our parish. Open our hearts to allow the Holy Spirit to motivate us to follow Jesus without counting the cost. In Your name we pray, Amen. On April 30, 2016, members of Fr. Henry Petter’s family, our church community and the community at large gathered to honor a man who has dedicated his life to Christ and blessed our church family for many years. Fr. Henry celebrated his 70th birthday and 40th Anniversary of his ordination this year. In appreciation for his many years of service, the St. Ann Community presented him with the “Homeless Jesus” sculpture created by artist Timothy P. Schmaltz. The sculpture is a visual reminder of Fr. Henry’s passion for all to be Christ to one another and to see Christ in all those we encounter. The festivities began with the unveiling of the sculpture and we were honored to have guests from all over the Dallas Diocese, the Petter Family, Catholic Radio, and the City of Coppell including Mayor Karen Hunt. Speakers, Tony Fleo representing the Monsignor Henry V. Petter Endow- ment Fund and long time friend, Msgr. Milam Joseph, spoke about the lifetime dedication of Fr. Henry to peace and social justice. Both reminded us how Fr. Henry has truly lived the call to be Christ’s hands and feet to those around us. (continued on page 3) Jo t t i n g s f r o m F r. H e n r y Musings from the Pastor: Dear Parishioners, You will be reading this Communique in the beginning of June. Most of you already know that Fr. Paolo Capra has been reassigned to St. Elizabeth Parish in Bonham, Texas. Fr. Paolo will be the Administrator of that parish for one year and then will become the Pastor. We will always be grateful for the two years of priestly ministry Fr. Paolo has given to St. Ann. We will most certainly miss him. Our prayers go with him as he begins a new phase of priestly ministry by taking charge of the parish community of St. Elizabeth in Bonham, Texas. Fr. Paolo will come back to visit us on June 12th and we will have a Farewell Reception for him in the Assembly Room after the 2pm Spanish Mass. I hope you will join us to say “Thank You”’ to Fr. Paolo for his service here. We are hoping to have someone replace Fr. Paolo here at St. Ann. We do not yet know who that will be but we are hopeful that the Diocese will have a solution for us soon. Meanwhile, we will all pray for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life. St. Ann Parish has been blessed this year with three of our young men being ordained. Rev. Mr. Michael Baynham was ordained on April 23rd to the diaconate and will be ordained to the priesthood in the summer of 2017. Fr. Paul Bechter and Fr. Emmett Hall were ordained to the priesthood at the Cathedral in Dallas on May (Continued on page 2) THE COMMUNIQUE Mass Times Sat Anticipatory 5:00 pm Sunday 8:00 am 10:00 am 12 Noon & 4:30 pm (a High School Ministry Mass) F r. He will return to the Theological College in Washington, D.C. at the end of summer to begin his third year of Theological Studies. On April 30th we celebrated my 70th birthday and 40th anniversary to the Priesthood. Around 1,800 of my intimate family and friends joined me for the blessing of the Homeless Jesus Sculpture, Mass and food, fun, music and fellowship in the courtyard and Assembly Room. Thank you so much for the love and affirmation you showed me on that beautiful day! I thank God for your love and friendship. I am honored and blessed to be your Pastor. SNAPS (Special Needs Parent Support) Group The Slater Family Parenting a child of any age with special needs can present many challenges. A group of parents at St. Ann has recognized the need for parents to get together and support each other through both the joys and the difficulties of raising children with disabilities. Erika Slater and Lori Ring, two St. Ann mothers of sons with special needs, along with husbands Peter and Mike, have lovingly created the SNAPS Parent Support Group. The newly formed SNAPS group’s mission is to provide a network of support and friendship in a prayerful setting. The group meets on the first Friday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in room 330 in the St. Ann Center. Childcare is provided with a reservation. For more information, or to RSVP for our next meeting, please email Debbie at [email protected]. That thought may be on your minds as you don’t see them and the RCIA/RICA team members taking your pew during Mass on Sunday! The Elect and baptized Christians, who were initiated into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil, are now called Neophytes. “Neophyte” means “newly planted,” meaning that they are now in full communion with the Church; they will remain a Neophyte until their first anniversary. There were a total of 61 people who came into full communion with the Church at the Easter Vigil. During the Easter season the neophytes entered into the final phase of RCIA, known as “Mystagogy.” In Greek this means “entering more deeply into the mysteries,” and this period extends until Pentecost Sunday. The new Catholics were welcomed to their first Mystagogy session with a celebration attended by parishioners and Ministry Leaders of St. Ann, Council members, and by the Neophytes from the previous Easter season. During this phase they also received post baptismal catechesis, reflected and shared their experiences of the Easter Vigil, and how God’s grace has touched their lives. A Ministry Fair was also held to familiarize the new Catholics with the diverse ministries that we have at St. Ann and to reflect on how they will serve Christ to more actively engage in parish life. We want to thank the different groups that hosted this event: Alpha, Adult Religious Education, Carnival, Children’s Religious Education, Christ Renews His Parish, EMHC, Family Life, Greeters, High School Ministry, Lectors, Magi, and Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. The Mystagogy phase ended with the Solemnity of the Pentecost Feast, at which time the new Catholics were commissioned to go out and serve in the Church’s mission. We continue to ask our parishioners for their continued prayers and support as we strive to reach out to those who are seeking to find a personal relationship with Christ. As Saint Francis quoted, “It is in giving that we receive.” This is a sentiment shared with the RCIA/RCIA teams and those who served as Sponsors. Should you know of someone who may be interested in joining the Catholic Church, please contact us at [email protected] or 972-393-5544x1895. We have numerous milestones to celebrate. That is why the Rejoice Committee was created. The Rejoice Committee is a group of over 30 parishioners who have said YES to the challenge of making 2016 a year to remember. On April 30, we kicked off our celebrating by unveiling a Homeless Jesus sculpture by Timothy Schmalz. This beautiful artwork was inspired by Matthew: 25. It is a representation that suggests Christ is with the most marginalized in our society. The Christ figure is shrouded in a blanket...the only indication that it is Jesus is the visible wounds on the feet. The life-size version of the work has enough room that someone is able to sit on the bench. At the unveiling, Msgr. Milam Joseph and Tony Fleo gave moving speeches. The unveiling was followed by a Mass honoring Fr Henry, on the eve of his 40th anniversary of his ordination into priesthood. After the Mass came the community wide picnic where close to 2,000 enjoyed the festivities. I’d like to take a moment and thank several members of the Rejoice Committee for their time, talents, and treasures that they used to help make April 30 such a wonderful evening. Greg and Audrey Muse, thank you for all the time you spent smoking the tasty brisket for the BBQ sandwiches and thank you Audrey for having your family deli bake the amazing birthday cakes. You two really put on quite a spread with the bratwurst and sauerkraut. Thank you for being willing to jump into the heat (literally) and feed all of us. Liz Cole, you astonish me with your energy and willingness to take on any job needing to be done. From taking over the publicity team, to managing the installation of our Homeless Jesus, to standing by my side all day Sunday, before and after all the Masses to take collections — you are my hero! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Jane and Dean Smith, boy do I now know who to go to for help putting together a video. All you have to do is watch the presentation to know how much time and love you two put into making the video for Fr Henry. He loved it and his family was very pleased and spoke highly of working with you on the project. Kristen Brandt, you made my life much easier with your organization and VIP tent idea. Fr Henry's family loved being treated like royalty, and you, sweet lady, did that! Thank you for handling all the invitations and making the day run smoothly. Jim Doyle, what can I say, except YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!! When you said you would handle the operations you were not kidding. From sunup to well past the sundown you were on the job! Thank you dear friend for the countless duties you and your team covered. The Men's Club, once again I am humbled by the Men's Club for jumping into the middle of the action and handling the dirty job of clean up and tear down. I have to tell you guys that I didn't even call them for help. In all honesty I didn't think about it. I guess I just assumed I could wave my magic wand and it would all be done. But PAGE 10 the Men's Club showed up in full force and without a word got the job done. You guys rock!!! The Knights of Columbus, thank you for having two members in full Color Guard attending to our Homeless Jesus and for running the hot dog and hamburger grills. You were well manned and I enjoyed the fellowship you all have. Gus Ortiz, thank you for handling the children's area. I noticed it was packed with happy faces and lots of laughter. Kris Ollom, thank you for securing the entertainment. R.A.Y.N. was awesome and I loved the tribute that they and Curtis gave Fr. Henry. He was very touched by it. I'd like to thank the publicity team, Tena Allain, Nicole Ameris, Liz Cole, Debbie Gonzales, KC Kenney, Taylor Kenney, Sandra Carpenter, and Gerry Whitney for the countless hours all of you put into organizing the publicity for this event. You guys did an amazing job with your creative juices. Tim Barr, thank you for organizing the Mass and reserving all the pews for Fr. Henry's friends and VIP guests. And lastly, I'd like to thank Jeff Flory for co-chairing this event with me. He put in months of preparation even though he could not attend the event. The April 30 Rejoice event will go down as a day to remember for the 2,000 parishioners and friends who attended and enjoyed our hospitality. Everyone who said yes to me way back last fall when we began working on this should give themselves a pat on the back. It took a village to pull this event off and all of you played a vital part in that. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! - Pauline Stein VOLUME XV1I, ISSUE II S t . A n n ’s C o m mu n i t y C a r n iva l THE ST. ANN COMMUNITY CARNIVAL MISSION The Carnival mission is to build fellowship within our parish and to provide the City of Coppell and the surrounding communities with a well-organized, fun and affordable family weekend. The St Ann Community Carnival has been a big part of the Greater Coppell Community annual events for the past 24 years. In fact the St Ann Community Carnival was recently voted best annual event by Coppell residents. The Carnival started as a fund-raiser for the Youth program and expanded into a three-day event that provides fun and funds for the entire Metroplex area. Carnival preparation is a year-round activity organized by a dedicated core group of volunteers. During the weekend of the Carnival we'll need more than 1,800 volunteers to help everything run smoothly. The event attracts more than 20,000 visitors and proceeds help to support not only St. Ann Parish, but also the surrounding community. Organizations that have benefited from previous Carnival proceeds range from the St. Ann Building Fund, Coppell Civic Departments, Christian Community Action in Lewisville, Metrocrest Service Center in Carrollton, various Scouting programs, Kid Country in Coppell, and The North Texas Food Bank, as well as many others. The 2016 Carnival will be held September 9-11.
