WHAT IS ZIZEK CLUB?
Argentina's Zizek collective has spent the last few years spreading the gospel of cumbia, electro reggaeton, and mashups to all corners of the globe via its energy-fueled club nights. -XLR8R
Great music comes out of great parties and in that, Zizek artists have an edge, with three years of consistently great parties making for a fast-track learning curve. The mixtapes pop, the records are like no
others, and the live party is even better.
So just what is Zizek Club? It’s everything it says it is, roving party, high energy, participatory, and, without
a doubt, about making you move. Zizek Club brings the Buenos Aires party to you with a roster of artists
in a compact format. DJs who know what you need, original tracks and hot remixes, and what you would
expect from the people who brought you Buenos Aires gems on ZZK Sound Vol. 1, a compilation of the best
of the city.
Time Out London caught up with ZZK Records on tour calling them “Buenos Aires' finest techno-cumbia
and tropical house label, represented by ZZK's in-house DJ squad, who concoct a lesson in cutting-edge
Latin dance sounds.” The label has had a banner first year of excellent releases, touring on three continents, and glowing press. The New York Times, XLR8R, The Fader, Urb, Newsweek, NME, The Wire, Clarin,
La Nacion, and Billboard en Espanol have each found a reason to write about Zizek over the past year.
Zizek Club is a weekly party that became a laboratory of dance where DJs experimented on the audience
and it responded. The result was a dialogue of music as art interpreted by the public. Zizek DJs are curators of an event that changes the rules. Where a DJ plays an early set to try out new sounds at a new
energy level with the audience. Where the artists and audience have the chance to form a relationship.
Where the audience arrives with a heightened interest in something that crosses barriers looking forward
to the unexpected.
Zizek was created by Villa Diamante, Nim, and Grant (El G) in 2006, at a time when Argentine nightlife was
under siege by law enforcement after a tragic fire at Buenos Aires venue Cromagnon. Grant was introduced to Nim as a local tastemaker, A&R, and producer and turned up at his house in search of cumbia.
At about the same time, Nim met Diamante at a party held in a five-star hotel slated for demolition. El G
booked Nim at a film festival mansion party for 400 people and toyed with the idea of a weekly party. Bringing in Villa Diamante, who was playing all over town, sealed the deal.
Whats Up Buenos Aires promoted the new weekly in San Telmo and the trio named it after a Slovenian
philosopher with a penchant for pushing the envelope. Zizek attracted a new audience who came for the
emerging sounds of hip hop, dancehall, electronica, reggaeton, and cumbia. This new public participated
in developing the party and created the spirit of Zizek Club; artistic, home-grown, and dynamic. From the
start, local producers arrived from diverse backgrounds to craft their respective sounds. In person, artists
collaborated, took risks, and got constant feedback from the crowd. The stage became the lab where visitors joined artists on rotation and Zizek Club took shape. In 2010, Zizek Club continues to evolve and is an
integral part of ZZK Records.
