///FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ZZK Records BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINa- october 2008 ALBUM: ///ZZK SOUND VOL. I ARTIST: ///V/A CUMBIA DIGITAL LABEL: ///ZZK RECORDS ///zzk sound vol. 1 - cumbia digital was created as a place to put the musical energy harnessed on stage at Zizek Urban Beats Club, the packed weekly party that currently dominates the electro cumbia scene in Buenos Aires. Marrying cumbia to electronic music, dancehall, and reggaeton, among others, the compilation includes the best artists experimenting with cumbia in Buenos Aires. From inception, Zizek Club has defined itself as a space where musical genres cross over and interact, where the commitment is equal parts dance floor and artistic expression. In a short time, Zizek Club became the setting for a laboratory of dance where producers interpret Cumbia and other Latin rhythms using modern production methods of electronica. With so much creativity reaching the public live at Zizek, the impetus was to release a compilation of the hybrid genre, or bastard genre, that came to be called “Digital Cumbia.” The label was born alongside ZZK Sound Vol. 1, bringing Buenos Aires`s Zizek to the world at large. ZZK Sound serves to properly describe the new sound that has captured international attention. The compilation of 17 original tracks by 17 Argentine artists presents the best of the local scene on record. ///About the Artist Villa Diamante, Nim, and El G make up the creative force behind gathering tracks from artists who are pivotal figures in the digital cumbia music scene. The 17 original tracks include: Chancha Vía Circuito, Fauna, Nim & Maestroshao, Oro11, Marcelo Fabian, El Hijo de la Cumbia, Frikstailers, El Remolón, El Trip Selector, King Coya, The Peronists, Caballeros con Descuento, Axel K Soundsystem, Fantasma, Princesa and Dead Menems. Birthed in the club, hybrid or ‘bastardized’ cumbia was already coming up when ZZK Records artists came in to give it a boost. Zizek Club is the latest live incarnation coming out of a community making experimental cumbia. Festicumex preceded Zizek and inspired musicians to incorporate cumbia into their respective works. Electro cumbia took shape and found its stage at Zizek, the first new club to anchor the hybrid sound and allow it to really grow with a large regular crowd guaranteeing a consistent place to play. A movement was obviously underway in the underground and it took ZZK Sound Volume I to ground it in local culture and bring it to the global marketplace. Reinterpreting a traditional Latin rhythm, cumbia, the experimental album ZZK Sound is a collective, uniform effort that matches some of BA´s newest with its most famous and prestigious producers. The album was the impetus that started ZZK Records on its swirling ascent. e fast-rising th f o e n to rs orne “Zizek’s a c g in crowds in k c a p , e n st cumbia sce rhaps be be e p n a c t a th with music sh-up ultimate ma e th s a d e describ nds: tin club sou a L d n u ro ing into of underg ehall bleed c n a d d n a ional reggaetón , with tradit p o -h ip h d n a ghettotech wirling nce beats s a d ic n o tr c and ele stew.” hot, boiling le o h w e th around -SF Weekly “Mixing cum bia melodie s with way ou t electro so unds and sample s artists, [Z izek] is bringing the new so und of Argentina to the world.” -SXSW.com ///About ZZK Records ZZK Records is a home grown, artists’ collective launched recently out of Buenos Aires, Argentina. ZZK Records sprang full-grown from Zizek Club, the weekly party in Palermo, capital of South American hip, where visiting artists and resident deejays attract consistent crowds of global, street music fans. At Zizek, cumbia gets thrown in a sonic blender with minimal electronica, dancehall, reggaeton and dub mashups, and original beats. ZZK Records artists and Zizek Club are enjoying international attention after a SXSW appearance and follow up U.S., Canadian, and Mexican tour that included a month of consecutive raucous parties. XLR8R posted a podcast mixtape for your listening pleasure while recent issues of The Fader, NME, and Urb feature Zizek’s story and photos. Buenos Aires has grown Zizek into a full-fledged outlet of mayhem. From long nights of party heat in the capital of South American culture, Zizek brings a blend of old and new, rural and urban, where the first and third worlds share the dance floor and make plans to hook up after the party. ///About Whats Up Buenos Aires Whats Up Buenos Aires is a bilingual arts and culture hub in Argentina, presenting local artists, musicians and events to a public of locals and global fans intent on discovering the Argentine underbelly.
