It is so hard to believe this is my third year as President of this amazing organization and we are celebrating 110 years as an Association!! Imagine our organization forming in 1907 by a group of teachers and students, when $1 covered membership and dinner at the Hampton Beach Casino! Today, it is free to be a member, but we graciously rely on your support. We have sent young graduates to serve in WWI and II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the War on Terror – many who sacrificed everything so we could enjoy our way of life. We’ve had the privilege to meet graduates of old Hampton Academy and Winnacunnet High School who have become successful members of our community and raised families of their own ready to graduate from WHS. Over the past three years we have seen a revitalization of the group and increased our participation in our community. This year’s edition of the Hampton Academy / Winnacunnet High School Association’s Annual Newsletter has many articles of our year’s activities with as many photos as we could gather – sure hope you enjoy it. We are happy to announce that Governor Steven Merrill, WHS 1964, will be able to join us as our honored speaker for this very special year at our Annual Luncheon and Meeting. Mark your calendar for this afternoon event and send in your reservation– this year’s event is going to better than ever! Lots of Fun at Fundraisers This year we really stepped up the fundraising activities and hosted a number of events at various Seacoast establishments to raise money. We couldn’t be successful at these events without the hard work of the Board of Trustee members and the generosity of the various hosting locations. Most of these events are just great opportunities for our alumni to gather and have some food and fun. The establishment gives us a donation based on proceeds. This year’s fundraisers included: Community Oven, Hampton, NH Country View Restaurant, Greenland, NH Flatbread Pizza, Hampton, NH Ronaldo’s Restaurant, North Hampton, NH Margaritas, Exeter, NH “…to strengthen alumni support through scholarships and grants….and continue an everlasting interest in the school.” We are also planning an active calendar for the 20162017 year – please come join us at one or more of these events. Their work with our seacoast youth has changed many lives. achievements and hard work. The Board of Trustees plan on making this an annual event!! There are many paths that young people take once upon graduation from WHS. One of those paths is into military service. The HA/WHS Alumni Association working in partnership with the WHS Marine Corp JROTC Program, assemble “Warrior Pride Packages” and send them to alumni who have just graduated from their basic training/boot camps and are now at their first duty station. Page 6 Alumni Newsletter– PO Box 81 North Hampton NH May 2016 Young Alumni College Networking On January 6 2015, the HA & WHS Alumni Association held their fourth Young Alumni College Networking fair in the Hawley Library. Younger alumni shared their post graduate and college selection experiences with the students. Board of Trustees Linda Libbey said, “The Alumni Association is trying to promote the spirit of giving back and welcomes involvement from the young alumni. The networking fair enables students to have a better understanding of what they want their next step in their education to be. The format of the fair promotes a relaxed atmosphere and gives students plenty of time to ask individualized questions.” This year we expanded the alumni attendees to include community colleges, military and post-secondary training opportunities such as culinary, welding, cosmetology, and automotive schools. Once again the attendance was excellent with nearly 50 young alumni returning to connect with students. Next year there are plans to merge the Young Alumni Networking Fair with the College, Career and Citizenship Readiness Day which will be held on January 12, 2017. Chief of Police Rich Sawyer (‘81), Tracy Williams (‘81), Clay Demarco (‘13) Alumni Directory Getting Off the Ground!! Branding Workshop Conducted by WHS 2001 Grad The Board of Trustees, along with the expert advice of Christine Linnehan-Sununu ‘01 is exploring the branding of the Hampton Academy and Winnacunnet High School Alumni Association. As more and more members join the alumni association, it is vital to establish our identity and define our mission so that many will get involved. In March 2016, Christine Linnehan-Sununu held a workshop where the Board members looked at logos of organizations around the country and determined what fit with the spirit of the organization. There will be more work on this in the upcoming 2016-2017 year. During the October 2015 meeting of the HAWHS Alumni Association, the Board of Trustees elected by a unanimous vote, Jesse Green, WHS Class of 2010 to join the Board. Jesse Green had a successful four years (20062010) at Winnacunnet highlighted by his involvement with student government as well as being a two sport captain. After graduating in 2010, he spent two years studying and playing football at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. During his time at the Academy, Jesse started dating and married his former 2010 classmate Elly Handley. In 2012, decided to put his studies on hold and serve in the United States Marine Corps. After being discharged in June 2015, Jesse and his family moved back to the Seacoast where they now happily reside. Elly is a waitress at the popular Tuckaway Tavern in Raymond, and Jesse is a real estate agent with Kennedy and Loiseau Real Estate out of Hampton Beach. You may also see Jesse at the Tonry Christmas Tree Farm in Hampton Falls where he has worked for 10 years. Elly and Jesse have a daughter named Autumn. Ted Davis, Board Chairman was also glad to see Jesse joining the organization – “As chairman of the Board of Trustees of the HA/WHS Alumni Association, I am ex- Jesse Green—Class of 2010 Elected to Board of Trustees cited that Jesse Green has joined us as a new Trustee. Jesse is a young man who is going to be a welcome asset to the Association and the WHS community. Jesse has served our country and now is very involved in the communities that WHS serves. As a board member we have already experienced his energy and willingness to make things happen. All the Trustees hope that Jesse's joining us will be a stimulus for other young alums to do the same.” Jesse Green pictured here on the left in his blue Board of Trustees shirt with other alumni who participated in the Young Alumni College Networking Event in January 2016.
