COMMUNITY CHAMPION
CHORLEY Lions, has built up an excellent working relationship with TESCO store over the years
and they have supported many of the Club’s fund-raising and Charity activities. So much so that the
Club has been selected as a beneficiency for their Community Fund.
They donated £750 to the local Hospice and £750 to the local Children’s Hospice with a further
£750 going to their Charities and “Good Causes”.
The picture shows the cheque presentation to Lion President John Lashmore and Members of the Club.
Dear Lion Friends,
I AM writing to thank all who contributed to my Gift at the end of my term as District
Governor. I have always wanted a Special Watch and so I put your gift towards my
new watch.
Dorothy as her gift to me for my birthday made up the difference. Pictured is the
watch I am now the proud owner of.
Thanks to everyone who came to the Hand-over Lunch at The Crofters in July, and
everyone I have spoken to said they had enjoyed the lunch and the food and service
was excellent
It was a special day for me and Dorothy. Lion President Bill Ferguson, Blackburn
Lions rendered me speechless when he presented me with the Bert Mason Humanitarian Award.
I have been honoured to serve our District as Governor and wish District Governor
Lions Sue and Tom all the best for their year in office. Thank you everyone.

WORKING IN HARMONY
LIONS’ FAMILY FUN DAY SUCCESS
OVER 30 Lions and Friends from five
Clubs around the Bay enjoyed perfect
weather and raised about £500 for their
charity and community work at a Family
Fun Day on Morecambe Sea Front.
The clubs were Windermere and Ambleside, Kendal, Grange-Over-Sands,
Furness, and Lancaster and Morecambe
which were helped by visiting Members
from Birchwood.
They were joined by North West Blood
Bikes; Nan’s Place at The Sanctuary
(Morecambe) and Angie Ashcroft Vintage Jewellery, and a display of Rescue
Owls plus a Hawk by Barn Owl Bill.
Apart from Birchwood, all the Lions
Clubs involved belonged to Zone B of
District 105 BN (North West England).
Zone Chairman, Lion Ivan Huff said:
“This was the first time in recent years
that our Zone has organised such an
event and was very much a learning
curve.
“We estimate that about 200 people
dropped-in, which was good in that we
shared the day with Morecambe’s “Catch
the Wind” Kite Festival and Vikings invading near-by Heysham!
“The day was always conceived as a
chance to meet the Lions and learn a little about our organisation rather than a
fund-raising exercise but grossed about
£500 with each Club taking home the
earnings from their stands.
“In addition, the Blood Bikes had their
own collection and had three enquiries
from potential New Members.
“Overall the verdict was that the day
was a great success and everyone involved has asked to do it again”.
Club’s Environment
Programme
AS part of the Clubs Environment programme
Fleetwood and Cleveley’s have taken part in
two projects.
The first one was the recycled Lion, stuffed
with Plastic Bags, a Chain made from Tin Cans
and a Crown made from the top of Plastic Bottles.
Their second Project was to buy two Plant
Stands which the Club will attend to for three
years.
I MENTIONED in the last Newsletter
that Tom and I were about to jet off to
Japan for the 99th International Convention.
Well, that is now done and dusted
but what a marvellous occasion it
most certainly was.
We arrived at Fukuoka some 18
hours after departing from Manchester
which, as you can imagine was rather
long and uncomfortable.
On arrival we were taken to the Hotel Nikko, which was the base for the
District Governor Elect’s from the UK
and Ireland, and of course, some
other countries.
The first four days involved photographs and DGE Seminars which thus
completed our training programme
that we had begun in the UK twelve
months earlier.
Thursday 23rd we attended a briefing
for the B & I reception at the Hyatt
Regency Hotel. Friday was the last
day of the DGE Seminars and Friday
evening we got to wear our white
jacket for the first time for the Banquet
and Ball.
Saturday 25th was special. We were
joined by the few dozen Lions from the
UK for the International Parade of Nations.
This was a really colourful event with
people dressed in national costume.
Sunday 26th was the first day of the
Convention and the first of the Plenary
Sessions were held at the Yahuoka
Dome, home to the Softbank Hawks
Baseball Team, 2014 Japan series
winners.
Fukuoka is famous for its food and
its baseball team! The final day of
Convention, Tuesday, June 28 was
what we had all travelled to Japan for.
The new International President,
Chancellor Bob Corlew was sworn in,
and a short time later, the 700 plus
District Governors who had travelled
there from around the world, were also
sworn in.
It was a great Convention made very
pleasurable by the wonderful hospitality and superb organisation of the
Japanese Lions. A big thank you and
well done. It was an unforgettable experience.
Almost as soon as we got back in
the UK, there really was no time to
stand still. On July 1, I travelled to
Manchester to meet up with District
Officer Lion Mandy Broadbent and
First Vice District Governor Lion Roy
Axton along with other Lions attended
the Battle of the Somme Celebrations.
This was a very emotional experience, and the following day I found
time for my own Club when I attended
the Crosby and District Club Handover
where PDG Lion Tom passed on the
Presidents chain to Past District Governor Lion David Winsland, our President for this year. It was, as always an
enjoyable social occasion.
Sunday, July 3 found me at a Charity Fun Day organised by the Maghull
Club Branch which included charity
stalls and a Fun Run around part of
Aintree Race Course. Another great
event from Maghull.
The next big event was the Disability
Awareness Day, or DAD for short,
which was held at Warrington and is
the biggest non-profit disability exhibition led by Volunteers in the UK.
The event is held by Warrington Disability Partnership and attracts in excess of 25,000 visitors every year.
The day aims to raise awareness to
the voluntary, statutory and private
services available to people with disabilities.
The event was in its 25th year, a
magnificent achievement and there
was much for people to see and do
and of course Lions were very much in
evidence and have been involved with
the event for many years.
Monday, July 11, I travelled up to a
Meeting at the Keswick Club and with
the President, badged up three New
Members.
Well done Keswick. If only we could
do that at every Club and I know you
will all certainly try.
Sunday 17th was District Handover
at the Crofters in Garstang. It was
once again emotive as Immediate
Past District Governor Lion Mike went
through the swearing in ceremony
again and placed the District Collar of
Office on me.
It was a wonderful afternoon with
good food and good company and
well attended by the Clubs and Officers.
A big thank you to IPDG Lion Mike
and Past District Governor Lion Barry
for organising the event.
Sadly, on the July 22, Tom, IPDG
Mike and many other Lions and former
Members of Formby attended the funeral of Lion Douglas Watson of
Crosby Club, who, at the age of 90,
and with nearly 50 years service had
passed to Higher Service. He will be
missed by all.

FRIENDS OF CHERNOBYL
CHILDREN from Chernobyl were entertained by Members of Fleetwood and
Cleveleys Lions Club.
In June, Lions Margaret Purcell and Anne McLoughlin took the nine Children
and three Helpers to the Blackpool Circus, which they really enjoyed. After
watching the Circus all were treated to Ice Creams which they don’t get back
home.
For their second trip Lions Stuart Gratrix and Paul Keirby took them to the
Sandcastle Water theme centre in early July.
As you can image the children were amazed by all the slides, and they all went
on them. Sadly, Paul and I didn’t. This is the third year that we have entertained
the children and it’s a great pleasure to take them to these events
