MESSAGE FROM DISTRICT GOVERNOR KAREN PARKER
Message from DG As your District Governor I am a member of the Council
Karen Parker 1-2 of Governors for the State of Virginia. On Friday, March
4th we met and approved a Redistricting plan. The opDG’s Schedule 2 tion is known as 3M. Why redistrict you may ask. If left
to the Lions of Virginia, we would not do so. I refer to it
pure and simple as a numbers game by Lions Club InterMap of Current
6 Districts and Pro- national (LCI). Every district must have 1250 members
posed Merger 3-4 and have at least 35 Lions Clubs. We currently in the
State of Virginia have three Districts which are below
1250. You will note on the map showing the six Districts
Winter Conference that there are numbers associated with each District.
Photo Collage 5-6 This reflects the current membership numbers. One District is close to being below the 1250 membership. We
Bland Music Con- also have one district which is right at 35 clubs. Why am I highly supportative of the 3M
plan? It is because it does not take any club or clubs away from a district. The plan joins
test Winners 7-10 Districts A & C, B & D and E & F. The plan was approved by a vote of 4 to 2. Since Dis-
tricts B & D did not support this plan, it is now imperative for the other four districts to get

not approved, there are a couple plans which literally take counties (clubs) away from our
district as it exists now. This is where redistricting gets a bad name as Lions talk about

13 previous redistricting plans that remove a club or clubs and reshuffle the Lions Clubs in
the State of Virginia. There are those who will not tolerate this and will leave Lionism, I
have been told. Thus, I am asking all Lions Clubs in District A to select delegates who

redistrict again. But the plan gives every District under the 3M plan equal rights. Any

Our Environment and Culture Chair advises that we have a date change for the Bull Run Cleanup. The new date is
April 16th. There will be two sites this year. One is at Bull Run Park at the end of the trail. There is a parking lot
located in the water park. There will be a tent set up there for the starting point. The other site is at the Bull Run
Marina. Parking is across from the marina. The trail is picked up at the marina. We will be partnering with the
Friends of the Occoquan and they will have boats on the river. They will take your bags of trash from you and place
them in their boats. We will provide the bags at the sites. Any questions, please contact Chairperson Donald Leas:
[email protected]
The May Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C. is quickly approaching. Lions have participated in this parade
for the past seven years. We continue to seek financial support for this event. The parade and our Lions Float are
very expensive as I stated in the March Lion Reporter. We need volunteers to participate: Lions, Leos and guests.
Those who are not ambulatory may ride on the float on a first come first serve basis. Obviously, seats are limited on
the float. However, our veterans do have first priority. The committee is also looking for donations of refreshments
for the marchers. If anyone has a contact with a supplier of drinks, water or snacks, please let Chairperson Woody
Woodard know. He is also hopeful that we may solicit donations from them as well. Should you have any questions, please contact PDG Woody Woodard: [email protected] or 703-314-0889.
Lions Worldwide Induction Day in our District is scheduled for April 24th. New members and their sponsors are invited to attend for a wonderful event. The time is 2:00 to 4:00 pm. It will be at the Park West Lions Club Building
located at 8620 Sunnygate Drive, Manassas, VA
All of our Lions Clubs should have received their packets for the State of VA Lions Convention which is scheduled to
take place on May 19-22, 2016 in Roanoke, VA. If you have not, please contact the State Office at 540-774-2495.

GETTING TO KNOW THE REGIONAL WINNERS
by Lion Sandy Mayo
Zoe Woodaman comments that she has “listened to music my entire life.” Her
grandfather listened to symphonies on the stereo, her mother played Beatles
songs on her guitar and her father played bagpipes at highland games. Hence
she was exposed to music’s complexity at an early age. Zoe began studying
voice in earnest when she was 12 years of age.
It is amazing how many hours these contestants devoted each week to their music. Zoe spends 3-4.5 hours a week for school chorus and another 3-4.5 hours
weekly for music theory. Additionally, she spends 1 hour a week in private lessons, and an hour practicing on her own. She writes “it doesn’t sound like much,
but the voice can tire very easily and I don’t like to push my voice. A tired voice doesn’t perform well. I
do, however, make sure that in the time I do spend singing that those practices are well spent.”
Zoe’s favorite musical subject in school is Madrigals Chorus and she has two favorite academic subjects:
language and literature. Zoe, a Senior at Mountain View High School, has applied to four colleges: Peabody Institute at John Hopkins, Duquesne University, Carnegie Mellon University, and James Madison
University. Thus far, she has been accepted at Duquesne.
Other than her musical efforts, she loves reading, kayaking in her neighborhood lake, lounging at the
pool, and just hanging out with friends. Basically, she loves the outdoors. She has a definite interest in
nutrition and may pursue it as a minor or dual major in college. She has four dogs: a boarder collie mix
named Frodo, a golden doodle named Peaches, a shih-poo named Bilbo, and a malti-pom named Daisy.
Anna Wang, who won first prize in the instrumental category, started
learning piano when she was 6 years old when her mother enrolled her in lessons. Eleven years later, she now strives to practice at least 2-3 hours a day!
When she is preparing for upcoming competitions, she practices even more.
Needless to say, all that practice was evident at the Bland Contest held in
Reston.
When asked what made her decide on the composition featured in the contest, she responded that she started learning the Chopin Sonata No. 3 in the
summer of 2015 when she participated in the Virginia Summer Residential
Governor’s School for the Visual and Performing Arts. Additionally, she thought the Chopin composition
brought out her strengths of technique and dynamics.
In addition to attending numerous piano competitions in Virginia, Maryland and D.C., she also accompanies other musicians in competitions and performances. Recently, she also started accompanying her
high school choir in their concerts. Anna also enjoys playing the cello and has been a member of the
Loudoun Symphony Youth Orchestra and serves as the principal cellist of Virginia Junior Regional Orchestra.
Her favorite subject in school is AP biology as she loves learning about living organisms and an individual’s genetic makeup. Indeed, she would like to attend the University of Virginia in the hope of pursuing a
career in nursing. Outside of her efforts in music, she enjoys volunteering throughout her community.
Sounds like a Lion member in the making! She is currently a teacher’s assistant at Experimental Chinse
School and volunteers extensively as a tutor at Potomac Falls High School. She is also a member of
many clubs and honor societies in her school such as Key Club, National Honor Society and Junior Advisory Board.

THE REGIONAL WINNERS (Cont’d)
Page 10
Christopher Yuk Papenfuss chose Piano Sonata No. 1: II. Leggiero e legato by Carl Vine as his piano selection because it was “the showiest piece” in his
repertoire. And indeed, it was. Christopher devotes a good 12 hours of practice per week and does a lot of sight-reading on Sunday. In addition to entering
competitions, he shares his musical talent at church and plays the hymns for
his seminary class almost every day. He also occasionally plays at retirement
homes.
It comes as no surprise that Christopher’s favorite subject at school is math.
He is 14 years of age and is home schooled. Outside of school, he like to play
basketball. He has two sisters, one older and one younger. At this point it is too early to be selecting a
college but we are certain Christopher will be a successful student wherever he goes.
When I asked Isabella Turilli how and when she became interested in her music, her response was she had been in school choir for the entirety of her
school career, but became interested in classical music in 9th grade when
she was accepted to the Chotard Institute of Music in Little Rock, Arkansas.
For the first time she was exposed to solo works that incorporated both highly
technical singing and emotional performance. When her family moved to Virginia, she began studying under Maria Dolan of the Washington National
Opera, and was accepted into the Levine School of Music’s prestigious Honors Program.
Isabella dedicates 5-6 hours each week to her music in formal lessons and
recitals, in addition to her personal practice at home. She is a member of the
Women’s Choral at Washington-Lee High School, and has just been selected to be a Madrigal singer for
the 2016-17 school year.
“Voi Che Sapete” was her performance selection for the Bland Contest as it is “one of the most iconic
mezzo-soprano arias.” As one might imagine, Isabella is fluent in Italian and has a certain penchant for
performing in languages other than English. She is also fluent in French and hopes to add another language to the list in the future. Regarding her future choice of a college to attend, she is most interested
in Yale University and Georgetown University as both have great music programs.
However, Isabella is also “absolutely fascinated with biology.” Not only does she enjoy learning about
the biochemical balances that allow the body to function, but the subject also furthers her knowledge on
her voice, and how to protect it. In addition to her musical endeavors, Isabella is an active and senior
member of Washington-Lee’s Model UN club, and loves to spend her weekends debating with her peers
as delegations from various corners of the globe. After school, she also tutors middle schoolers in math
and is a member of the Key Club.
As has been said before, ALL OF THE CONTESTANTS ARE WINNERS. It takes considerable time,
effort and courage to compete in the Bland Scholarship Contest. We wish each and every one success
in their future endeavors wherever their paths take them.

Hard to believe winter is over and we are in the beginning of Spring. Time to take charge of your health, by
beginning an exercise program. Are you active? It is never too late to begin to improve your physical activity. Research has shown that doing some form of physical activity on a daily basis has many positive benefits. It will help you control your weight, prevent diabetes, improve your mood, reduce your risk for depression,
strengthen your heart and lower your blood pressure. Any form of physical activity is helpful such as sitting in
a chair doing leg raises, lifting soup cans or marching in place while watching TV. Be creative and begin to

On Behalf of the Parade Committee, I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to the many Lions,
Leos and Guests that helped to make the Lions participation in the National Memorial Day Parade a tremendous success. Over the past seven years this function has been viewed by an ever increasing number
of people. 2015 estimates were for over 500,000 along the viewing route, and millions more reached by
multiple TV broadcasts, and printed advertising. Plus, Miss America was the celebrity on our Float, so we
received extra exposure because of our extended stay at the reviewing stand while she sang God Bless
America.
However, all of this comes at a price, and in the past, LCI has stepped up and provided grants to help cover the cost of our participation. LCI has stated that during the next three years, this particular financial
help will not be available, so if we plan to continue participating in this parade, we will have to find other
methods to finance it. So we are looking to you our Lions and Lions Clubs for both participation and funding. Many clubs have purchased our merchandise (T-Shirts, Backpacks & Neck Coolers), and we encourage you to continue to do so, as all monies from these sales go to funding the parade. We also ask that
Clubs continue to donate. If you or your club has donated in the past, we thank you. If you or your club
has not, then we ask that you consider adding us to your budget.
This has been a joint effort with MD24 and MD22 since we started participating and we are making this our
Centennial Public Relations effort for at least the next couple of years. LCI Public Relations has said that if
our float is decorated to highlight our upcoming “Centennial”, it will qualify as a centennial project.
So we are asking for your continued support with Marchers and donation. We make a tremendous impact
with the Lions marching along Constitution Avenue with Club Banners, and our very prominent Float.
Donations can be made payable to: NMDP, and mailed to Lion Mike Yuenger, 12579 Fascia Ct, Woodbridge, VA 22192-5284. Memorial Day is fast approaching.

Thankfully yours
