Top 10 Mercatini
di Natale in Italy
It’s the holiday season and that means it's time for the Mercatini di Natale
or Christmas markets! This tradition, hailing from Germany where they are
called Christkindlmarkt has over the years made its way to town centers all
over Europe spreading the joy of the season with ornaments, toys and food
specialties. Here are our picks for the best Mercatini di Natale in Italy this
holiday season:
Bolzano has perhaps the most
famous Mercatino di Natale in all
of Italy. Beginning on November
27 until January 6 from 10am
to 7pm with extended hours on
weekends. Piazza Walther in the
city center becomes a Christmas
wonderland with over 150 stands
filled with joy, gifts, crafts, food
items (closely associated to
neighboring Germany and Austria).
Nearby you’ll also find a huge
advent calendar on the windows of
the birth home of Bolzano’s famed
astronomer Max Valier. Other
seasonal displays include the
Bosco Incantato and Kinderland
preferred by younger visitors.

Dec. 9 to
Jan. 6 from
9am to 9pm
Known for its spas, Merano also boasts an enchanting Mercatino di Natale
with holiday lights, unique products including textiles, wood crafts, organic
produce, skating rink and much more, you’ll find them at Piazza Terma
in the historic center starting November 27 until January 6 from 10am to
7:30pm with extended hours on the weekends. During your visit to Merano,
be on the look out for the Alberi di Natale Merano (Designer Christmas
trees) scattered about the city. If you’re traveling with kids, we recommend
a detour to Piazza della Rena for a visit to Goldy’s house or a visit to the
Luckis Kinderland playground.

In Trento make your way to Piazza
Fiera and Piazza Cesare Battisti
from December 21 to January 6 for
a smell, feel and taste of Trento’s
Mercatini di Natale with their unique
Christmas spirit. Pay particular
attention to the gastronomic stands
which offer local specialties.
Moving along, we head to Turin,
the Piedmont capital, where the
classic Mercatino di Natale takes
place in the Borgo Dora district
from December 4-23 where stalls and mini ‘chalets’ propose Christmas
ornaments, lights and trinkets along with crafts and gastronomic products
from Italy and abroad. There is also a special children’s area featuring
entertainers, storytelling, artistic workshops and games.

Scotland is perhaps the only
country in the world that
regularly celebrates a poet: 25
January 2016 will mark the 257th
anniversary of Robert Burns’ birth
in 1759. Scots all over the world will
get together for a traditional Burns
Supper, which features Scotland’s
most famous dish: haggis. We
will have it flown in specially
from MacSween’s in Edinburgh,
reckoned to be the best of all.
Robert Burns is famed not only
for his poetry – much of it in Scots
dialect, but still understandable to
English-speakers – but also for his
political commentary, as he was
a great upholder of the Rights of
Man. He was also an important
collector – and “improver” - of
traditional Scottish folk songs.
Some works said to be written by
him, such as the “Selkirk Grace” or
“Auld Lang Syne”, almost certainly
existed previously, but became
particularly memorable by being
associated with him.
While he won’t be remembered for
his farming skills, Burns’ reputation
as a tombeur de femmes is
probably the aspect of his life that
most Scots recall most easily.
Indeed, perhaps it is the reason we
enjoy celebrating him so frequently.
Italy may have had Casanova
and Spain Don Juan, but we had
Robert Burns. And as a serial
seducer, he is a lot more simpatico
than the other two, because he
genuinely loved the women he fell
for. Hence the poetry.

Mince Pie
Mince pie remains a popular
seasonal treat enjoyed by
many across the United
Kingdom.
Makes 12 pies
Preparation time 30-50 mins.
Cook time 20-30 mins.
Ingredients
•350g high quality mincemeat
•200g plain flour, sifted
•404 golden caster sugar
•75g ground almonds
•125g unsalted butter, diced
•1 large free-range egg, beaten
•milk, to glaze
Method
Lightly butter a 12-hole pie or
patty tin. Tip the mincemeat
into a bowl and stir so that the
liquid is evenly distributed.
Place the flour, sugar, almonds
and butter in a food processor
and process briefly until
resembling breadcrumbs, then
slowly add the egg through the
feeder tube. (Or rub the butter
into the dry ingredients by
hand and stir in the egg.)
Bring the mixture together with
your hands, wrap in clingfilm
and chill for an hour or so.
Thinly roll out the pastry on
a floured surface. Cut out 12
circles with a fluted pastry
cutter, large enough to fill the
base of the prepared tin. Press
gently into each hole, then fill
with the mincemeat.
Cut out another 12 slightly
smaller discs and use to cover
the mincemeat. Press the
edges together to seal. Make
a small slit in the top of each,
then brush lightly with milk.
Chill for about 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, preheat the oven
to 200°C.
Bake the pies for 20 minutes
until golden brown. Remove to
a wire rack and serve warm.
To create the snowflake
pattern, use a festive doily as
a template and sprinkle with
icing sugar.
Tip: Serve warm with lashings
of brandy butter.

Shortbread
Shortbread, traditionally a Scottish
treat, is commonly associated
with Christmas and Hogmanay
(Scottish celebration for the last
day of the year) festivities.
Preparation time 20 mins.
Cook time 45 mins.
Makes about 24
Ingredients
• 225g butter
• 225g plain flour
• 110g cornflour
• 110g icing sugar
Method
Pre-heat oven to 150°C.
Cream the butter and the icing
sugar together until pale and
smooth.
Add the flour and cornflour and
mix until a dough is formed.
Roll
out
the
dough
to
approximately 1cm thickness,
and cut out biscuits using a
cookie cutter.
Place on a baking tray and prick
the tops with a fork.
Bake for 45 mins or until they
start to turn golden, keep a
watchful eye throughout the
baking process as cooking
times may vary.
Remove from oven and allow
them to cool on a baking tray.
Tip: Shortbread will keep in an
airtight container for up to 1 week.

One Day Ticket: (4.50€) valid for 24 hours.
Two Day Ticket: (8.25€) valid for 48 hours.
Weekly 2x6 Pass: (10€) Allows two rides per
day for 6 days in a week.
Carnet of 10 Standard Tickets: (13.80€)

In Milan you may have noticed it's difficult to
hail a taxi. Most available taxis are found either
at taxis stands, usually near major metro stops
or they are reserved in advance. The meter
will start ticking once the taxi is heading in
your direction for pick up (not once you get
into the taxi). There are set fare to and from the
airports. Malpensa airport to the city center will
cost Euro 90, whereas from Linate Airport will
cost on average Euro 35 depending on where
you need to go.
