Welcome to the Tipsy Toboggan. In the summer of 2012, the conversion of this small old mill building
began to take shape as The Tipsy Toboggan. Our goal was to provide a small cozy eatery and pub that
transports you from your every day surroundings to your favorite ski lodge nestled in the majestic mountains
up north. We thank you for becoming a part of this experience and hope you enjoy our food, service and
entertainment.

The buildings here began as American Linen Company and its neighbor American Print Company. They
were giants of the textile industry born out of the Industrial Revolution with some of the most modern
manufacturing equipment in the country. The Toboggan was originally built by the American Linen Company
around the turn of the century to serve as its “count house” behind the main factory. Long before online
banking and electronic deposits, the count house was the place where employees came to get paid at the end
of the week. At one time, American Linen Company employed nearly 6000 people producing 125,000 pieces a
week. It was one of the largest producers of print cloth in the United States. Unfortunately, devastating fires,
The Great Depression and cheaper labor costs in the south finally put a stop to the presses at American Linen
in 1934.

Firestone purchased some dormant factories a few years later and began to breathe new life into the
neighborhood and Fall River. However, disaster struck again only 8 weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor; a
catastrophic fire tore thru the mill complex. This great fire was described by then Secretary of State Cordell
Hull, “as a major set back to the United States’ war effort.” Firestone lost seven million dollars worth of
rubber weighing 18,500 tons that were to be used for our American military.

As you dine with us, reflect on our city’s rich history and many of the changes that have occurred in
the last century. This little building alone, prior to The Toboggan serving soup, salad and entrees, hosted
horses, protected mountains of money and provided manufacturing space for the production of American
flags.
