LINQuarterly - January, February and March
2015 Winter Edition
ello everyone,
The start of a new year is an opportunity to reflect on the past
year. And what a year 2014 was for Red Deer Public Library as we
celebrated “100 Years of Discovery”: our Centennial year!
The Library’s Centennial Committee organized a variety of events from
January to November enticing people to celebrate, commemorate and
discover the library. Centennial celebration highlights included
January’s Downton Abbey Tea, the Family Literacy Day launch of a
specially designed Childrens’ Library card (featuring the “Rainbow
Reader” graphic), April’s month-long free library card campaign, Mayor
Veer’s proclamation of “Red Deer Public Library Day” on April 23,
2014 (100 years to the day that the City of Red Deer signed a Bylaw
creating the Red Deer Library Board), the day-long “official birthday
party” held at both the Dawe and Downtown Branches, record
breaking participation by Red Deer’s children in our Summer Reading
Club, the November launch of “More Than Cobwebs and Dust” and
our festive participation in Festival Lights the Night that simultaneously
ended our Centennial year with a bang and helped kicked off the City’s
Christmas season.
Many community partners contributed to the success of the Library’s
Centennial year. Noted historian, Michael Dawe provided a series of
informative articles on Central Alberta’s public library history and was
always willing to speak on the topic of RDPL’s history. The City of Red
Deer’s Parks Department created a floral tribute in City Hall Park to
proclaim our “100 Years of Discovery”.
The City’s Cultural Services Department gifted three outstanding fibre
art works to all three library branches as an enduring artistic legacy
linking the City’s history to the Library. (see pages 14 and 15)
Red Deer Public School Board, the City and Library Board partnered to
open a brand, new library branch, Timberlands, during Canadian Library
Month. Yes, 2014 was quite a year and we start the New Year off with
our promise of “100 More Years of Discovery” as you’ll see from the
contents of this issue, all courtesy of your public library!

FIRST FRIDAYS RED DEER, JANUARY 2 AND FEBRUARY 6 FROM 6:30 TO 8:30 PM.
Dear Little Friends: Ceramics by Alysse Bowd
Dear Little Friends refers to twenty letter carrying machines designed for the safe
delivery of your most tender notes, thoughts and warmth. They are machines
equipped for all forms of travel.
“They will hop and dance, fly, jump and skip,
Or some will decide to sail as a ship.
Whatever their mode they’ll arrive in delight,
Then with your response they’ll be off like a kite.
Use them with care, respect what they do,
If you’re kind and gentle, they’ll work just right for you.”
By creating these unique porcelain machines, Alysse, a Red Deer artist, brings the fantastical, the
extravagant and the make-believe into daily routine.
“My work dearly loves to laugh, and to chat and to make friends and if you get close enough
you might find yourself befriended. I believe in giggling and daydreaming and that when these
things combine they can take you into the most wondrous of worlds.” February 24 to April 26
FIRST FRIDAYS RED DEER, MARCH 6 AND APRIL 3 FROM 6:30 TO 8:30 PM.
Take a Second Look at Your Plate: by Anne Marie Resta
Seeking an artistic challenge, Edmonton photographer, Anne Marie Resta began a yearlong study of a familiar subject – vegetables. But as the weeks progressed, she found herself
taking a second, and unexpected, look at her subject. A growing awareness of the abundance of
food available to Albertans year ‘round, coupled with thoughts of how far our food travels
before it reaches us, and the vast amount of gas and oil used in the process, resulted in some
changes in Anne Marie’s behavior. Will this exhibit inspire you to change your
behavior too?
Come and see what she has ‘dished’ up for you
and take a second look at the food on your plate!

Centennial Legacy Public Artworks Provide Insight into our Community
RDPL's longstanding connection
to the City and vitality of Red Deer's
life stretches from 1913 until 2014.
Last year City Centennial Threads 2013 was hung in the Downtown
Branch in honour of the City’s
Centennial year. With the 2014
addition of two more quilts, RDPL's
three Branches (Downtown, Dawe
and Timberlands) are now knitted
together through the City's legacy
gifts of fibre art.
"City Centennial Threads - 2013"
(pictured below) a panoramic, fibre art tryptic
hangs for all to see in the Piper Creek
Optimist’s Children's Department,
Downtown Branch. It can be viewed whether
one is in the Children's Department or
outside through the former Firehall doors,
which are now windows. Through a map art
format, it embodies elements of the City's
heritage, in a colourful piece that RDPL is
proud to display.
“Sew Me a Story”, Children’s
Program Area (pictured above) A once
upon a time quilt conceived by Hazel
Nylin and quilted by Carrie Berg on the
occasion of Red Deer Public Library’s
Centennial Year.

branch, Timberlands, an ideal location

area in 1907.
