From Green to Gold — January 10, 2016
It is a tale of two teams. One team was not expected to do anything
this season, and after their win two Saturdays ago they are playoff bound
having earned the NFC East division title. Their record was 8 and 7, and they
had one game to go against Dallas. I didn’t know the outcome of that game
last weekend because this column, as the past few, had to be written well in
advance. On the other hand great things were expected of this second team.
Instead, although their record was 10 and 5, the season really had not lived
up to what I had hoped for at all. The star quarterback often looked mediocre at best. Some of their other key players did not seem to play up to their
potential, and their game two weeks ago against Arizona was a debacle. They
lost to the Cardinals 38 to 8. Aaron Rodgers got sacked eight times and fumbled three times. Obviously, that is not the way to win a game. This second
team no doubt is my team, the Green Bay Packers, and the first team is the
Washington Redskins. The Packers are in the playoffs as well, at least with a
wild card slot. They actually could have taken their division if they won last
week against Minnesota.
As I have commented here in previous weeks we can never rest on
our laurels. That even applies to the Carolina Panthers who were undefeated
until they lost to Atlanta two weeks ago. No team, no person is perfect! The
Panthers may even have lost their home-field advantage to Arizona, depending on what happed last weekend. While we really can’t look back, we have
to constantly look forward and be prepared for what comes at us. There
should be no question in our minds that the evil one is always at work. He
wants us to sin. He wants us to think that we don’t need God. He wants us to
neglect our spiritual lives, but we cannot and have to be ready for anything.
That is why attending Mass every weekend, going to confession regularly,
praying daily, and doing charitable acts for others are all so important. They
help to keep us focused. This doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate Christmas
with all its glory and truly enjoy the blessings God gives us. Hopefully you
were able to do that these past two weeks. I was home in Wisconsin, but
have returned as you read this. I am certain I enjoyed myself, but we can
never take a vacation from our vocation to be holy. I pray we never do.
Before closing this week I want to express my gratitude to all of
those who have made this Christmas season so beautiful and memorable.
My first Christmas here at St. Veronica’s has been a great one in part because of all so many did to make it that. First, I want to thank all of you who
attended any of our Christmas season Masses. For those who don’t come as
often as we should, my hope and prayer is that you will now make that extra
effort to do so. I was particularly impressed with how many went to confession, especially on that Wednesday before Christmas. I also want to thank all
who helped in any way with our Masses. That would include the lectors, ushers, money counters, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, and servers. I am thankful for all who decorated the church under the leadership of
our sacristan, Eileen Chiama. Doug Munger, our facilities manager, and his
crew did a wonderful job of assisting as well. Our church office staff helped
in making everything go smoothly these past few weeks. Our two deacons
and Fr. Isenberg were of tremendous help as well. A special word of thanks
goes to Emily Mason, our parish music director, to the cantors, and the parish choirs. They all did much to add to the beauty of the Masses. Another
special word of gratitude goes to kindergartner, Sophia Cozad, who brought
up the Baby Jesus at the Midnight Mass. Lastly, I want to thank all of you
who sent us priests Christmas cards or greetings as well as the many gifts of
cakes, cookies, candy, fruit, and other such things. They are all greatly appreciated.

Monday, January 18th is Martin Luther King, Jr.
Day. In keeping with the policy announced last
fall, we will have only one Mass at 8:30 am that

Inclement Weather Policy

Fellow Parishioners for the March for Life
The annual March For Life takes place this year
on Friday, January 22nd. We will begin our observance at St. Veronica of this national Day of
Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children at 11:00 am with a Holy Hour for Life. St.
Veronica will have a bus to take parishioners to
the March for Life. The bus will depart at 12:00
noon and return by 5:30 pm. The Knights of Columbus will provide a warm dinner for the March
participants at the end of the day. Contact the

Now that winter has finally arrived, it’s time for a
reminder about St. Veronica’s inclement weather
policy. St. Veronica follows the Fairfax County
Schools’ and Park Authority’s policies regarding
closures due to inclement weather. In the event of
school closure or Park Authority event cancellation, all activities that take place on the parish
grounds will be cancelled, except Mass. Masses

Icon of Divine Mercy
In honor of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Office
for Family Life has invited each parish to host the
Icon of Divine Mercy that was created for the Diocese of Arlington in Krakow, Poland by the
Polish artist Anna Sekowska. St. Veronica is hosting the icon this week in the church. During this
time, all are invited to come share in devotion to
the Divine Mercy and pray in a special way for
peace and healing in families.

The Our Father—Exploring the Hidden Depths
Come join the Society of Patricians on Monday,
January 11th, at 7:00 pm in the Acolyte Room as
we explore the hidden depths of our most complete prayer.
The Our Father, Pater Noster or the Lord’s Prayer is considered the model prayer. There is no
prayer in all of Christendom more
revered, known and prayed by all Christians. Even more so, the Catholic Church has
sanctified the importance and the perfection of
this prayer. The Catechism of the Catholic Church
teaches that the Our Father “is truly the summary
of the whole Gospel” (no. 2761). Catholics pray
the Lord's Prayer whenever they worship at Mass
and say the Rosary. However, have we said
it so much that we fail to appreciate the meaning?
We need to appreciate the value and significance
of Jesus’ intent for presenting this prayer. It was
not improvised by Our Lord on the spot as a
quick reply to an unexpected request, but rather a
long awaited gift to answer a request on the part
of humanity, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke
11:1). The Lord’s Prayer is one unified, compact,
model prayer consisting of seven petitions in an
instinctive sequence, divisible into two
parts: “God-ward” & “Us-ward.” Come join us as
delve in to the deeper meaning of these petitions
to better understand this gift of Our Lord.

Dinner and a Catholic Movie
On Saturday, January 16th, after the 5:00 pm
Mass, all are welcome to attend the movie Guadalupe—The Miracle and the Message (narrated
by Jim Caviezel). This documentary (runtime 60
minutes), released by the national Knights of Columbus, tells the story of the Mexican miracle,
Our Lady of Guadalupe. Before the movie, Fernando Flores and Sandy Greeley will serve a typical Mexican meal with cheese enchiladas, chicken
mole, guacamole, and churros with flan for dessert. Cost is $5 per person. Let’s eat and enjoy the
story of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Winter Food Drive for St. Lucy Project
From Friday, January 15th to Sunday, January
24th, St. Veronica is holding its second annual
winter food drive to help stock the empty shelves
of the neediest in our Diocese. The St. Lucy Project of Catholic Charities will distribute your donation of the following most needed nonperishable items: canned chicken; canned ham,
beef, or beef stew; canned fruit; peanut butter
and/or jelly; cereal, oatmeal, nutrition bars,
crackers (peanut butter, cheese, etc.); cooking oil;
coffee, tea, and shelf-stable milk, such as boxed
chocolate milk; baby items such as diapers,
wipes, formula; baking items such as pancake
mix, syrup, Bisquick, flour, sugar, cake mixes;
and condiments, such as mustard, mayonnaise,
hot sauce, olives, salt, pepper.
MONETARY DONATIONS: Cash is always appreciated. All funds will be used to purchase food
for those in need. We also gratefully accept
Walmart, Safeway, Shoppers and Giant gift cards.

and insert in the memo line “St. Lucy Project Buy
Food.” Note: Last winter, St. Veronica’s parishioners donated a full ton of goods for the winter

Throughout the month of January, when you

IGNITE seeks to accompany young people in
grades 6-8 on their journey of faith, pointing
out the loving works and very near presence of
the Lord in their day to day life.
IGNITE gathers on Friday evenings from
7:30 pm-9:00 pm in the parish hall. All students in grades 6-8 are encouraged to attend.
The evenings include food, music, games, prayer, and learning. This year we will also be going
to BASH a diocesan rally for youth in Middle
School as well as having day retreats, service
opportunities, picnics, sports, and more.

ABLAZE seeks to empower high school students to put their faith into action through
evangelization and works of mercy.
ABLAZE gathers on Sundays. All teens in
grades 9-12 are invited to join us for the 5:00
pm Mass. Following Mass, we will gather in the
parish hall for dinner, games, prayer, and opportunities to grow in knowledge of our Catholic faith. This year, we will be going on retreats
and pilgrimages as well as discovering how the
Lord is inviting us to use our gifts and talents to
serve others and spread the Gospel.
