Preble County District Library responds to
2013-14 financial audit
Emily Hackett, Reference Librarian
EATON, OH — On Aug. 9, Ohio Auditor Dave Yost’s office
released the regular financial audit of Preble County District
Library for 2013 and 2014. The audit found multiple
instances of material weakness and noncompliance, which
the library’s Board of Trustees has worked to correct in the
last year.
DATABASE SPOTLIGHT
From late 2013 through 2014, the library’s former Fiscal
Officer Terri Wysong failed to complete monthly cash
reconciliations and submit required annual financial reports.
This led Auditor Yost’s office to dub the library’s fiscal
records ‘unauditable’ in August 2015.
With the help of a consultant from the library’s former
supplier of accounting software (CMI) and a traveling clerk
on behalf of the State Auditor’s Uniform Accounting Network
(UAN), the library completed the required reconciliations and
reports to allow for an audit.
The audit revealed more problems with the fiscal office,
including a failure during that time to pay the IRS, OPERS,
and other agencies funds withheld from employees’ wages.
Considering these findings, the library’s Board voted against
renewing Wysong’s contract in January 2016.
The neglect of payment to the IRS, OPERS, and other
agencies led to several financial penalties from those
agencies. The Auditor’s report found Wysong liable for the
$36,407 in late fees assessed during her time as Fiscal Officer
of Preble County District Library.
“This audit has made our board more alert in our roles as
managers of public funds,” said library Board President Anne
Grim. “We’ve since hired a new fiscal officer and are vigilant
in our compliance with all aspects of the Ohio Revised Code,
especially those directing the handling of public money.
“With a new fiscal officer and better oversight from the
board, we’ll move forward. Ultimately, this audit will make
us a stronger organization as we continue to provide quality
library services to the residents of Preble County.”
Direct any questions to Library Director Lauren Robinson at
937-456-4368 or Mike Zimmerman at 937-683-6937.
The full auditor’s report is available at www.ohioauditor.gov.

Portrait Drawing Donation Depicts Local Citizens
Sally Miller (Wyoming) and Marilyn Miller Clark (Montgomery County,
Ohio) pose beside the portrait of married couple, Maria Huffman Straw and
Peter Straw. The sisters donated a total of five portraits depicting people
who once hailed from Preble County, Ohio.
The portrait on the top left shows Charles “Robert” Appleby, bottom left,
his wife, Caroline Johnson Appleby; the portrait on the top right shows
Lydia Paddock Adler, bottom right, her husband, Harry Adler.
The original photos were tin types sent to a company in Chicago that
recreated them into portrait drawings.
The PC Room staff wishes to thank Sally and Marilyn for their generous
donation. The portraits have been hung in the Preble County Room.

The Bookshop on the Corner /Jenny Colgan:
Nina Redmond is a literary matchmaker. Pairing
a reader with that perfect book is her passion…
and also her job. Or at least it was. Until
yesterday, she was a librarian in the hectic city.
But now the job she loved is no more.
Determined to make a new life for herself, Nina moves to a
sleepy village many miles away. There she buys a van and
transforms it into a bookmobile—a mobile bookshop that
she drives from neighborhood to neighborhood, changing
one life after another with the power of storytelling.
Nutshell: A Novel / Ian McEwan: Trudy has
betrayed her husband, John. She's still in the
marital home—a dilapidated, priceless London
townhouse—but John's not there. Instead, she's
with his brother, the profoundly banal Claude,
and the two of them have a plan. But there is a
witness to their plot: the inquisitive, nine-month
-old resident of Trudy's womb.
Told from a perspective unlike any other, Nutshell is a classic
tale of murder and deceit from one of the world’s master
storytellers.

The Blind Astronomer’s Daughter / John Pipkin: In lateeighteenth-century Ireland, accidental stargazer Caroline
Ainsworth learns that her life is not what it seems when her
father, Arthur, throws himself from his rooftop observatory.
Caroline had often assisted her father with his observations, in
pursuit of an unknown planet; when astronomer William
Herschel discovered Uranus, Caroline could only watch
helplessly as unremitting jealousy drove Arthur to madness. Now, gone blind
from staring at the sun, he has chosen death over a darkened life.
Grief-stricken, Caroline abandons the vain search, leaves Ireland for London,
and tries to forget her love for Finnegan O'Siodha, the tinkering blacksmith
who was helping her father build a telescope larger than his rival's. But her
father has left her more than the wreck of that unfinished instrument: his
cryptic atlas holds the secret to finding a new world at the edge of the sky.
Today Will Be Different / Maria Semple: Eleanor knows she's a
mess. But today, she will tackle the little things. She will shower
and get dressed. She will have her poetry and yoga lessons
after dropping off her son, Timby. She won't swear. She will
initiate sex with her husband, Joe. But before she can put her
modest plan into action-life happens. Today, it turns out, is the
day Timby has decided to fake sick to weasel his way into his
mother's company. It's also the day Joe has chosen to tell his office-but not
Eleanor-that he's on vacation. Just when it seems like things can't go more
awry, an encounter with a former colleague produces a graphic memoir
whose dramatic tale threatens to reveal a buried family secret.
News of the World: A Novel / Paulette Jiles: It is 1870 and
Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels through northern Texas,
giving live readings to paying audiences hungry for news of the
world. An elderly widower who has lived through three wars
and fought in two of them, the captain enjoys his rootless,
solitary existence.
In Wichita Falls, he is offered a $50 gold piece to deliver a young orphan to
her relatives in San Antonio. Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders killed
Johanna’s parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as one of
their own. Recently rescued by the U.S. army, the ten-year-old has once again
been torn away from the only home she knows.
Their 400-mile journey south through unsettled territory and unforgiving
terrain proves difficult and at times dangerous. Johanna has forgotten the
English language, tries to escape at every opportunity, throws away her
shoes, and refuses to act “civilized.” Yet as the miles pass, the two lonely
survivors tentatively begin to trust each other, forging a bond that marks the
difference between life and death in this treacherous land.
Arriving in San Antonio, the reunion is neither happy nor welcome. The
captain must hand Johanna over to an aunt and uncle she does not
remember—strangers who regard her as an unwanted burden. A respectable
man, Captain Kidd is faced with a terrible choice: abandon the girl to her fate
or become—in the eyes of the law—a kidnapper himself.

interested in the fresh-faced cookie chef who always
knows exactly how to get under his skin. So when Nate
challenges Kara in the town's big holiday contest, it's not
just the competition that starts to heat up. If he's not
careful, Kara won't just melt his icy resolve against a
small-town Christmas . . . she'll melt his heart too.

The Room with the Second-Best View / Virginia
Smith: Excitement is in the air in Goose Creek,
Kentucky, as the small town prepares to celebrate
its 150th anniversary and the veterinarian's
upcoming wedding. But trouble is brewing in this
provincial paradise...
Al Richardson agreed to open a B&B with his wife after his
retirement in two years, but Millie secretly invites some guests
to stay for the wedding. She plans to be the most gracious
Southern hostess—until a tumble down the stairs leaves her
unprepared for their quirky and cantankerous first guest.
Meanwhile, the town's anniversary plans are in a state of chaos
as the celebration committee scrambles to raise the necessary
funds—an effort spearheaded by a "newcomer," which ruffles
the townsfolk's feathers. Goose Creek has lasted 150 years. Can
it survive the next month?

Rise of the Rocket Girls: The Women Who Propelled Us, from Missiles to the Moon to Mars / Nathalia Holt: In
the 1940s and 50s, when the newly minted Jet Propulsion Laboratory needed quick-thinking mathematicians to
calculate velocities and plot trajectories, they didn't turn to male graduates. Rather, they recruited an elite group
of young women who, with only pencil, paper, and mathematical prowess, transformed rocket design, helped
bring about the first American satellites, and made the exploration of the solar system possible.
For the first time, Rise of the Rocket Girls tells the stories of these women--known as "human computers"--who broke the
boundaries of both gender and science. Based on extensive research and interviews with all the living members of the team, Rise
of the Rocket Girls offers a unique perspective on the role of women in science: both where we've been, and the far reaches of
space to which we're heading.

The Lobster was a really interesting art house film starring Colin
Farrell. It’s set in a dystopian near future where singlehood is a
crime. According to the laws of The City, people who are single are
forced to go to The Hotel where they have 45 days to find a mate. If
a mate isn’t found, the person is transformed into a beast and sent
off into The Woods. It’s a dark comedy / drama.
Film Synopsis
The Lobster: David has just been dumped by
his wife. To make matters worse, David lives in a
society where single people have 45 days to find
true love, or else they are turned into the
animal of their choice and released into the
woods. David is kept at the mysterious HOTEL
while he searches for a new partner, and after
several romantic misadventures decides to
make a daring escape to abandon this world. He
ultimately joins up with a rebel faction known as
The Loners, a group founded on a complete rejection of romance.
But once there David meets an enigmatic stranger who stirs up
unexpected and strong feelings within him…(Rated R)

Standing Bear are called to Hulett,
Wyoming—the nearest town to America's
first national monument, Devils Tower—to
investigate, things start getting complicated.
As competing biker gangs; the Bureau of

to the tiny local police force by a wealthy entrepreneur; and Lola,
the real-life femme fatale and namesake for Henry's '59
Thunderbird (and, by extension, Walt's granddaughter) come into
play, it rapidly becomes clear that there is more to get to the
bottom of at this year's Sturgis Motorcycle Rally than a bike
accident. After all, in the words of Arthur Conan Doyle, whose
Adventures of Sherlock Holmes the Bear won't stop
quoting, "There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact."

murderous band of cattle rustlers who work for them. And after the
Sinclairs turn on innocent Ira, Coy is driven to seek justice for his
