and Lost (2004-2010), is playing his cards
close to the vest when it comes to Super 8,
which will open on June 10. What is the
most unique element of this would-be
summer blockbuster?
GAYDEN WREN
NYT SYNDICATE
OU may think there are four three-month
seasons in a year, but if you worked in
Hollywood you’d know better. In the movie
business there are three four-month seasons,
and have been ever since 1975.
That was the year Jaws opened and created the
summer blockbuster as we know it. From then on,
May through August was blockbuster season, the
beginning of the Hollywood year, the season in which
every studio scrambles to make enough money to pay
for the rest of the year.
Then comes Oscar season, the September-throughDecember window in which all Oscar hopefuls are
supposed to premiere, so as to linger in the memory
of voters come January.
And, finally, burn-off season, the January-throughApril ghetto into which studios dump movies not
artistic enough to win Oscars nor commercial enough
to play in the brutally competitive summer marketplace.
Nowadays, though, Hollywood lives in a compartmentalised world and wants a calendar to match.
Oscar hopefuls aren’t blockbusters, blockbusters
aren’t Oscar hopefuls and neither is ever going to
open in burn-off season. There are Oscars for
summer movies – music or special effects,
most likely – but not for acting or, heaven
knows, writing.
Are you set for this summer’s blockbusters?
Test your knowledge with these questions
covering this summer’s biggest films
Y
A. Super 8 is the only one of this year’s blockbusters
to be created from scratch and written directly for the
screen.
† Green Lantern is the latest DC superhero
to make his way to the big screen, trying to
counter a traditional jinx against DC heroes
other than the “Big Two” of Superman and
Batman. How many different heroes have
fought as the Green Lantern?
A. There have been four Earth-based Green
Lanterns: Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner
and Kyle Rayner. That doesn’t count
the original Green Lantern, Alan
Scott, a magic-based superhero who
debuted in the 1940s, was revived in the
1960s and continues to appear in the pages of
Justice Society of America and other DC comics.
‡
Transformers: Dark of the Moon is
set to open on July 1. It’s the follow-up
to
Transformers
(2007)
and
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
(2009). How well did the movies fare
at the box office ?
A. Michael Bay’s two Transformers
movies each did well over 100 times the
box office of The Transformers: The
Movie, which topped out at a measly $5.7
million.
‚ Thor is the saga of the Norse thunder god. The story pits Thor (Chris
Hemsworth) against his evil half brother, Loki. In what previous blockbuster
was Loki the villain?
A. In The Mask (1994), the surprise hit that
made a star of a little-known comedian named
Jim Carrey, the titular mask is an artifact of Loki,
infused with the mischief-making essence of the
Norse trickster god.
ƒ Those freewheeling buddies are back in
The Hangover Part II. In The Hangover
(2009), former boxer Mike Tyson made a
highly entertaining cameo. Which celebrity
cameos in the sequel?
A. Mike Tyson returns as himself in The Hangover
Part II. Mel Gibson was to have cameoed in the film,
but the deal was torpedoed by protests against the
actor’s controversial statements and actions in recent
years. Bill Clinton was rumoured to be appearing, but
never did more than visit the film’s set in Thailand.
Liam Neeson actually filmed a cameo, but it ended up
on the cutting room floor.
„ Opening on June 3, X-Men: First Class is a
prequel to X-Men (2000) and its two sequels,
flashing back from the present to the 1960s
and the formation of Professor Xavier’s
school for mutants. When was the best-selling
comic book on which the series is based
launched?
A. The X-Men, the classic Marvel Comic created by
writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, debuted in
September 1963. The comic was revamped in 1975 by
writer Len Wein and artist Dave Cockrum, who intro-
ˆ The final half of Harry Potter and
the Deathly Hallows, set to open on
July 15, closes out the series of eight
films based on JK Rowling’s best-selling seven-novel series. How many
actors have appeared in all eight
movies?
A. The Harry Potter Marathon Society has 14
members, each of whom has seen eight films,
four directors and untold numbers of co-stars
come and go. It’s a particular accomplishment for
Somerville, given that her character – Harry’s mother – dies before the series starts.
‰ The executive producer of Cowboys &
Aliens, which is due to open on July 29, has
two other would-be blockbusters on this summer’s slate. Who is he, and what are the two
other films?
A. Steven Spielberg, executive producer of Cowboys
& Aliens, is also an executive producer on
Transformers: Dark of the Moon and a producer on
Super 8. Which bodes well for all three, since he’s a
man who knows a thing or two about blockbusters.

duced many new characters and laid the
template for the 2000s film series. In
returning to the 1960s and some of
those earlier characters, therefore, XMen: First Class is returning the XMen to their roots.

What three actors from earlier installments return for the fourth film Pirates of the
Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in the series?
A. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley depart the
Pirates of the Caribbean”franchise, but Johnny Depp
as Captain Jack Sparrow and Geoffrey Rush as
Captain Barbossa continue on. Joining them is
Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, who created
the role of Captain Teague in Pirates of the
Caribbean: At World’s End (2007) and reprises it in
the fourth film.

HE table lamp is laid-back, and
no wonder. Created by Peter
Stathis, a San Francisco industrial designer, for Joby, a San
Francisco consumer products
company, Trapeze has the easygoing
affect of a Bay Area windsurfer on a fairtrade coffee break.
But don’t be fooled by its relaxed
demeanour. Trapeze has a serious side –
it’s good for the environment, too.
Introduced at the International
Contemporary Furniture Fair, which
ended recently, the lamp has 102 LEDs
embedded in its ultra-thin head; a diffuser softens and spreads the light so that
it resembles the warmth of (boo, hiss)
incandescent bulbs. Another bit of patentpending wizardry allows Trapeze to bend
like a Cirque du Soleil gymnast because
no wires run through its jolly, bulbous
joints. The current somehow manages to
flow anyway.
At the Jacob K. Javits Convention
Centre in Manhattan, where the furniture
fair is held every May, and in concurrent
design events throughout the city, playfulness mingled with social responsibility,
and sometimes overshadowed it. Among
the more than 500 exhibitors from 39
countries, the green conversation hadn’t
faded by any means, but it was less strident, better integrated into the ambient
hum of the new.
This fair showed that objects as banal as
recycling containers, stepladders, fruit
crates and old potatoes can have flair. At
the Javits Centre, Catherine Mui, a
designer based in Hong Kong, showed her
GO recycling bin, its compartments
topped with sculptures of a bottle, can
and carton to assist in sorting.
Among the items at “Use Me,” the
American Design Club exhibition in
NoHo, was Step, a ladder by Iacoli &
McAllister, of Seattle, inspired by models
from the 1920s, except that it had pinkpainted oak treads and was priced at
$1,195, so it probably won’t be left to rot in
the garage. (It’s sustainable the way emerald brooches are.)
Hannu Kahonen’s Fruit Box chair, on
display at a Finnish design exhibition in
the meatpacking district, challenged consumers who presumably have mastered
IKEA furniture to assemble their own
seating from recycled planks lashed

together with linen cord.
And at “Model Citizens,” a design show
at the Chelsea Art Museum, the Dutch
designer Juliette Warmenhoven’s Potato
Music Box, part of her Everyday Growing
collection, turned a sprouting potato into
a centrepiece. The music box, constructed
by hand of paper dipped in plastic, displayed the potato on a rotating pedestal,
flaunting its underappreciated charms.
Once the grim, chastising superego of
product design, sustainability has
become delightful. And it no longer calls
attention to itself as insistently as it once
did. Trove, the Brooklyn wallpaper company, has begun applying its delicate,
nature-themed prints to wallcoverings
made with calcium carbonate, the stuff
of marble and limestone; the texture of
the material offers little evidence of its
provenance, although a sample was suspiciously heavy and cool. Randall Buck,
Trove’s co-founder, said the stonebased wallcoverings are breathable,
antimicrobial, degradable (into dust)
and easier to hang than conventional
wallpaper because they don’t expand
and contract when paste is applied.
Another virtue, Buck pointed out, is that
while “paper wants to turn yellow,”
stone is content to remain its original
colour.
Sustainability has traditionally created
aesthetic challenges, leading to products
made in regrettable shades of oatmeal,
but designers at this year’s fair positively
embraced those hurdles. At the booth
representing Rhode Island School of
The Peter Stathis Trapeze LED table lamp.
Design’s furniture department, students
working with Twintex, a recyclable
Owens Corning-manufactured composite of glass and polypropylene, described
the medieval tools they used to turn the
material into hairy-looking tables, chairs
and lamps. For Eun Sang Ernie Lee, the
author of an armchair composed of
crimped waves of fibre, the instruments
were giant knitting needles; a system of
aluminum rods and clips to produce the
perm; and a kiln to bake the chair into
stability.
How big were the needles? “Two inches
in diameter,” Lee estimated. Other students jumped in to correct him, making
circles of three and four inches with their
fingers.
One designer even buried the sustainability story. Immersed in a discussion of
the spine that provides flexibility for a
chair called I Would Do Backsprings 4
You, Daniel Moyer of Brooklyn neglected
to mention the source of the wood that
made up the rest of his piece. Only eventually did he reveal that it came from “the
branch of a black walnut tree that fell
down in Pennsylvania in the ice storm of
2008.” Five or 10 years ago, anecdotes
like that were breaking news in the
design industry. Today, one has to beg for
them.
As the RISD students and Moyer both
demonstrated, conversations about sustainability in design frequently turn to
craft. Both areas have gained momentum
in the past decade with heightened concerns about the fate of the planet.
(From left) A sprouting potato at the centre of a handmade music box; Hand painted spool stools; The facecord chest.
Limited-edition hand-wrought pieces
tend to be treasured by their owners
rather than discarded in landfills. They
also consume fewer resources than their
factory-made counterparts, and are more
likely to be produced by loving hands.
One of the fair’s most remarkable
objects in this genre didn’t look like craft
at all, but an ebullient work of industrial
design. The Bulldozer Lounge, a stocky
aluminum-composite chair lined in neoprene that resembles a caterpillar (as well
as a Caterpillar), is the first production
piece by Mark Goetz, a New York designer, and Efe Buluc, a designer based in
Istanbul, who have been working together off and on since 1997.
“We wanted it to be animated and playful,” Goetz said, adding that his 7-year-old
son is bursting with pride in his accomplishment. There is nothing toylike, however, about the $12,000 price of the
made-to-order chair.
The altruism of craft was a theme of
several projects, among them Espacio
Hayek’s collection of objects made from
Barro Negro, a clay native to Oaxaca,
Mexico, that gets its sheen through
smoking rather than glazing. The studio’s
tableware and furniture in this material
are produced by a Mexican artisans’ collective that employs local workers.
Similarly, Bow Bins, rattan-and-recycled-plastic baskets designed by Cordula
Kehrer of Germany for the New York City
company Areaware, help support the
Aeta people of the Philippines, who
weave them.
Other craftspeople were busy demonstrating their skill. Over the course of the
fair, the storefront of the Future Perfect,
in NoHo, was occupied by Matt Gagnon,
of Glendale, California, who built lamp
prototypes out of aluminum pieces that
he assembled into armatures and
wrapped with different kinds of fibres.
The Boston designer Debra Folz passed
time at her display at the “Model
Citizens” show in Chelsea needlepointing
the mesh top of a metal bench. And
“Wanted,” an exhibition of international
design nearby, offered a demonstration
of gilding.
Summer is nearly upon us, but knitting
fever shows no sign of letting up. The New
York artist Olek has won admirers by crocheting wrappings for every object in a
studio apartment, and designers are also
making sweaters for things insensible to
cold. The Future Perfect displayed small
flasks that the New Yorker Lara Knutson
had clothed in a glassy knitted yarn, while
at the Javits Centre, Esque Studio of
Portland, showed hanging lamps with
white pullovers, like little pear-shaped
Irish fishermen.
If an award were given for suffering in
the service of decoration, though, it
would probably go not to a knitter, but
to Peter Sandback of New Hampshire,
who drove 5,800 aluminum nails into
a slab of oak to create the inlay design of
his Nail Table (NUMBER) 5. The piece
is exquisite; one hopes that Sandback’s
digits have not paid the price for its
beauty.

4 easy ways to chart baby growth
SURE, the doctors always chart baby growth, but you only get to see his version every two or three months. If you’d prefer an update more like, oh,
every week, here are some do-it-yourself ideas:
1. Keep a journal of your baby’s accomplishments and your feelings as you both navigate this action-packed year. Down the road you can look back
at it and laugh at your new-mom anxiety or pat yourself on the back for your prescient observations.
2. Use a growth percentile chart to monitor your baby’s height, weight, and head circumference. Then when she doesn’t hit a milestone right when
you’re expecting it, you can comfort yourself by reviewing the fact that she seems to be A-okay physically, which means she’ll get to it in her own
good time.
3. Point, click, scrapbook online, that is. Kodakgallery.com, shutterfly.com, and snapfish.com all offer easy scrapbooks; you just upload your photos
and drag faves into a premade book. Then you’ll have a beautiful keepsake of your baby’s growth. You’ll be the envy of the mommy-group members
who can’t see their way past the spit-up.
4. Go ahead and compare notes within reason with your friends, neighbours, and relatives. You’ll almost inevitably discover that all kids are different
and mature early in some ways while lagging a bit in others.

SETTING A ROUTINE FOR
YOUR BABY
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
How to find a routine that works for you and
your baby
THE STRUCTURED ROUTINE
Some experts tout a fairly specific program
because it helps babies learn what to expect and
to adjust their body rhythms. One popular example is the late Baby Whisperer Tracy Hogg’s
EASY (Eat, Activity, Sleep, Your time) plan, in
which parents pace their baby through regular
cycles of these events, roughly every three hours.
Like Hogg’s plan, structured routines tend to feature sample schedules and timetables.
Benefits: What to do is all laid out for you,
which some moms find less stressful than a blank
slate.
Drawbacks: The reality is that life with a
baby tends not to fit neatly into a chart on the
printed page, which can cause plenty of frustration for some parents and their children. Plus,
the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that you breastfeed when your
baby shows signs of hunger, not when
the clock tells you to. “A lot of new
parents are looking for a framework,” says Laura Jana, MD, coauthor of the AAP’s Heading
Home With Your Newborn:
From Birth to Reality. “But
then they take that framework to be an ideal that
has to work the same way
every time. That’s not very
real.”
THE BABY-LED ROUTINE
Finding
the right “flow” to
your day is as important
for you as it is for your baby’s
sense of security. We help you
assemble a schedule that
works for both of you
At the other end of the
spectrum are routines in
which the parents follow the
baby’s cues entirely. One such
philosophy, known as “attachment parenting,” recommends
exclusive breastfeeding on demand,
wearing your baby in a carrier or a sling,
and lying down with your baby to soothe her to
sleep when she seems tired. William Sears, MD, coauthor of The Attachment Parenting Book and The
Baby Book, emphasises responding to a baby’s cues
to shape her day rather than following strict schedules.
Benefits: This routine is fairly easy for many
parents to pull off. Babies often love and respond
well to all the extra attention and closeness.
Drawbacks: Not all babies will fall into good
routines on their own — some need a guiding structure from their mom and dad. Parents, in turn, may
find this approach overly restrictive, leaving them
little breathing room or time to themselves. It can
also be incompatible with the demands of work or
older siblings.
THE IN-BETWEEN ROUTINE
Many parents organise their baby’s time so that
the same things happen in approximately, not exactly, the same order every day, and around the family’s
other demands. “Rather than trying to enforce a onesize-fits-all or even a one-size-fits-most schedule, I
think it makes more sense to come up with a rough
blueprint for the day that’s flexible enough to allow
you
to
respond to
your baby’s
needs
as
well as your
own,” says
Ann Douglas,
a parent educator and author of
The Mother of All
Baby Books. This
kind of routine tends to
be more casual than the
structured approach, and it’s more
focused on the needs of Mom and the entire family
than a baby-led approach.
Benefits: All parents can work out a routine to
suit them and their baby. Mothers are less likely to
feel trapped by their baby’s every demand.
Drawbacks: Some infants do better on a schedule that’s less laissez-faire; you may have to tinker
for a while to find the happy medium that’s best for
you.
NOT-SO-ROUTINE-QUESTIONS
Before you settle on a daily game plan for your
baby, or think about changing the one you already
have, ask yourself these questions:
How old is your baby? A newborn won’t have
organised sleeping and eating patterns. All you can
do is meet her basic needs. After a few weeks, you’ll
probably notice a loose pattern emerge, says pediatrician Will Wilkoff, MD, that goes something like
this: wake, feed, play, sleep. Gradually add elements — taking a walk every morning, giving a bath
at night — to bring predictability into your baby’s
day. By about 4 months, a regular routine will probably have evolved.
What’s your baby’s temperament? “Some
don’t tolerate chaos well,” says Dr Wilkoff.
“Routines are important to them, and if you vary
things too much, they will react.” Base the level
of structure on how adaptable your baby’s personality seems to be.
What’s your personality? “If you’re a very
orderly person who eats at six and goes out
every Friday night, a baby can seem
chaotic; you might perceive your child
as more difficult than a different kind
of parent would,” says Dr Jana. “You
may want your baby on more of a
schedule.” Laid-back moms,
meanwhile, may find that a routine involving checking the clock
and filling out logs ups their
workload and stress level.
What’s going on today? Even
the best routines go haywire.
Your older child’s soccer game
may begin right in the middle of
your baby’s naptime, for example. Or
if you have to be at work early one day, it
might not be possible to let your baby sleep
as long as usual. Babies change, too. They get
sick, teethe, go through growth spurts, and
hit milestones. A new crawler, for example, may be too excited to settle down
for his customary nap. No two
days were exactly alike
before you had a baby.
Give your routine
plenty of room to
breathe
and
evolve,
and
you’ll both be
happier for it.

Tips to improve nutritional and physical fitness
Health
guide
1. DO a squat every time you pick something up. Instead of bending over in the usual way, which stresses the lower back, bend your
knees and squat. This forces you to use your leg muscles and will build strength.
2. Every time you stop at a traffic light (or the bus does), tighten your thighs and butt muscles and release as many times as you can.
(Don’t worry, no one will see it!) This will firm leg and buttock muscles, improve blood flow — and keep you mildly amused!
3. Whenever you’re standing on a line, lift one foot a half-inch off the ground. The extra stress on your opposite foot, ankle, calf and thigh,
plus your buttocks, will help firm and tone muscles. Switch feet every few minutes.
4. Buy whole foods — whether canned, frozen, or fresh from the farm — and use them in place of processed foods whenever possible.
5.Reject foods and drinks made with corn syrup, a calorie-dense, nutritionally empty sweetener that many believe is worse for the body
than sugar.
6. Start each dinner with a mixed green salad. Not only will it help reduce your appetite for more caloric foods, but it also will automatically add veggies to your meal.
Everyday activities that may
trigger a stroke
IAN SAMPLE
GUARDIAN NEWS SERVICE
D
RINKING coffee, hard exercise
and nose-blowing are the everyday activities most likely to raise
blood pressure and cause a specific kind of stroke, doctors say.
Taken together, the three activities account
for nearly a quarter of all cases in which a
blood vessel bursts in the brain, a serious medical emergency that can kill.
They topped a list of eight “triggers” that could rupture aneurysms
- bulges in the walls of blood vessels
- in the brain. The other triggers
were sex, straining on the toilet,
drinking cola and being startled or
angry. Each activity causes a sudden,
often brief, surge in blood pressure.
Most aneurysms occur in blood
vessels at the base of the brain, but
they tend to go unnoticed because
they hardly ever cause symptoms. It is
not clear what causes them, but a family history of aneurysms, high blood
pressure and smoking are all risk factors.
Although brain aneurysms burst
only rarely, a rupture causes bleeding
and often fatal brain damage. Around a
third of patients with a brain haemorrhage die within a month, and some 15
percent will require long-term care in
nursing homes. Roughly one in ten
recovers well enough to return to an
active life.
Doctors created the list after asking
patients and their carers to complete a
questionnaire on what they were doing
shortly before they had a stroke, and
comparing their answers with the persons usual routine. The findings are
expected to help with strategies to prevent strokes, for example advising people
at risk to reduce their coffee intake or strenuous exercise.
“One of the major reasons we did this study
was to understand better why some aneurysms
burst and others dont,” said Ale Algra, a clinical epidemiologist at the Utrecht Stroke Centre
Doctors identify everyday

and the Julius Centre for
Health and Primary Care in Utrecht, the

were specific triggers behind these events.”
The researchers spent three years collecting
information from 250 patients over 18 years
old who had experienced a burst aneurysm in
their brain. The team, led by Monique Vlak, a
neurologist at the University Medical Centre in
Utrecht, then worked out what
fraction of haemorrhages in the
wider population could be attributed to each activity.
Of the eight triggers, drinking
coffee within the past hour was
most strongly linked with ruptured aneurysms, accounting
for an estimated 10.6percent,
with vigorous exercise at
7.9percent and nose blowing
at 5.4percent. These were followed by sex (4.3percent),
straining on the toilet (3.6percent), drinking cola (3.5percent), being startled (2.7percent)
and being angry (1.3percent). Both cola
and coffee contain caffeine, which can raise
blood pressure.
The study is published in the journal
Stroke.
“For patients who know they have an
intracranial aneurysm, it might be an
advantage to avoid coffee and avoid straining to defecate by using laxatives if needed,”
Algra said.
Some patients discover they have an
aneurysm after having a brain scan for
another medical reason. Aneurysms can be
operated on, either by clipping the bulge
shut, or filling the aneurysm with thin wire
coils, but some are hard to reach, making
the operation a major risk in itself.
“The rupture of a brain aneurysm is
incredibly dangerous. It is often sudden,
without warning, and it can cause bleeding in the brain, known as a haemorrhagic stroke. A sudden surge in high blood
pressure can increase the likelihood of an
aneurysm rupturing,” said Sharlin
Ahmed at the UK Stroke Association.
“However, its very difficult to determine whether the triggers identified in
this study are definitely related to the
onset of a stroke as they could simply be
put down to coincidence. A lot more
research needs to be carried out to assess
whether each of the identified triggers could
directly cause an aneurysm to rupture.”

Sonakshi loses diamond earrings on Joker sets
THEY say diamonds are a girl’s best friend. So, Bollywood actress
Sonakshi Sinha must be heart-broken, as her diamond jewellery worth
lakhs went missing while she was shooting for Joker with Akshay Kumar.
It happened during a late night shoot of Joker at Film City. The Dabangg
actress realised that her diamond solitaire earrings had gone missing from
her vanity van. Sources from the film sets said that she remained calm
and continued shooting instead of raising a ruckus. “My birthday was on
May 24 and the cast and crew were ushering it in on the sets. Akshay
had planned a celebration. This is when Sonakshi’s diamond solitaire earrings went missing from her vanity van. A police complaint has been
launched,” said director Shirish Kunder.
EMRAAN Hashmi’s filmMurder 2, promises lots of dare-bare
scenes between lead pair Emraan and Sri Lankan beauty
Jacqueline Fernandez. Emraan and Jacqueline don’t know
each other until Murder 2 happened but sources said that
they share great chemistry on the sets. It is said that the
film has ample intimate and dare-bare scenes but the duo
has reportedly shot the scenes like they have known each
other for years. The shooting of the sequel produced by
Mahesh Bhatt and directed by Mohit Suri is currently on.

Shilpa Shetty’s estate taken

IANS
PRIVATE estate in Britain that

Shetty - is reportedly being taken over
by a gang of squatters.
The celebrity residents of the St
George’s

community
in
Weybridge, Surrey, are now being
asked to be “vigilant” following the
arrival of the squatters, the Daily Mail
reported.
Former residents of the estate
include singer Elton John, former
Beatle Ringo Starr and Hollywood
actress Kate Winslet.
Six squatters reportedly moved into
the abandoned three million pound,
six-bedroom Woodlawn Cottage on
the exclusive estate in April, and claim
they were not acting illegally.
The property was reportedly abandoned six years ago and has since
become derelict. The squatters say

they plan to stay as long as possible. “It
is legal for me to be here. I found the
place on Google maps so I came up to
have a look and the place was open.
The locks had been broken off, no one
was living here, it was completely open
- so why not?” a squatter named Stefan
Cybulski said.
Homeowners now say they want the
illegal movers out.
“It does seem pretty extraordinary
that the police can’t do anything to get
these people off the estate,” a resident
said.
“They have no right to be here, yet
the law appears to be on their side - it’s

Properties on the estate are worth

the property under surveillance. Police have

Eva Mendes finds marriage unromantic
Cheryl’s beauty secret for red carpet
ACTRESS Eva Mendes considered marriage an old fashioned
idea and she has no plans to marry — any time soon. “I’m
not like anti-marriage... And I love the idea of a union —
that’s all very beautiful. But I think, it’s a very old fashioned,
archaic kind of thing. We did it for land originally. How unromantic is that?” usmagazine.com quoted Mendes as saying.
“I actually think it’s really sexy to be with someone in your
50s and 60s and be like, ‘That’s my boyfriend.’ I think husband and wife is just… very unsexy,” added Mendes, who is
dating Peruvian filmmaker George Augusto.
SINGER Cheryl Cole always carries make up tools in her bag
while walking on red carpet. “In my red carpet clutch bag, I keep
eyeliner, of course. And lip gloss, and sometimes I have a preloaded little blusher brush in the bag. It can make the inside of
the bag a little dirty but it’s a good trick,” contactmusic.com quoted Cole as saying. The 27-year-old also has a number of dresses
to pick from, when it comes to dressing up for showbiz events. “I
used to feel it was good to have a lot of choice, but I don’t now.

OLOMBIAN pop singer Shakira said recently she
would one day like to sing pop songs, if not an
entire album, in Arabic. The native Spanish
speaker, who also has global hits in English, was
speaking at a news conference in Morocco, where
she was headlining the Mawazine World Rhythms music
festival.
“It would be a challenge to do an album in Arabic. I
would first have to learn Arabic,” she said. “I am completely open to that experience. ... At some point I
would love that to happen in my life.”
Born in Colombia of Syrian origin, Shakira said she
grew up listening to the Arab world’s premier divas of
the 20th century, Egyptian Umm Kalthum and
Lebanese Fairuz.
Shakira often uses eastern dance, also known as belly
dancing, in her acts, and her hit Spanish language single Ojas Asi relies heavily on a Middle Eastern melody.
Her eastern origins and musical influences have made
her popular throughout the Middle East.
She admitted, however, that she only speaks a few
words of Arabic, including “ateeni boosa” or give me
a kiss, provoking laughter among the mostly
Moroccan crowd of journalists.
Morocco’s 10th-annual Mawazine festival of
world music concluded on Saturday after eight
days of music that saw bands from 60 countries,
including Kanye West, Lionel Ritchie, Egypt’s
Amr Diab and Senegal’s Youssou N’Dour.

Orlando Bloom joins Peter
Jackson’s The Hobbit
REUTERS
ORD of the Rings star
Orlando Bloom has joined
the cast of Peter Jackson’s
upcoming Hobbit movies — even
though his character, the elf
Legolas, doesn’t appear in JRR
Tolkien’s original novel.
Jackson announced the casting
in a Facebook post recently.
“Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom
created an iconic character with his
portrayal of Legolas,” he wrote.
“I’m excited to announce today
that we’ll be revisiting Middle
Earth with him once more. I’m
thrilled to be working with
Orlando again.”
Jackson is currently directing
the two-movie adaptation in New
Zealand.
L
He helped catapult Bloom to
stardom by giving him his first
major film roles as Legolas in the
Lord of the Rings trilogy. Looking
back, Jackson wrote on his
Facebook page, “I look older and
he doesn’t! I guess that’s why he
makes such a wonderful elf.”
The Hobbit movies, which have
been in the works for 14 years, has
faced a series of setbacks.
In 2005, Jackson filed suit
against New Line Cinema, claiming he had lost revenue from merchandising, video, and computer
games releases associated with The
Fellowship of the Ring and was no
longer attached to The Hobbit.
Three years later, director
Guillermo del Toro signed on but
dropped out in May 2010 due to
scheduling conflicts.
Jackson was confirmed again as
director in October 2010, but
union disputes in New Zealand
threatened to relocate filming to
Europe. In January, Jackson
underwent surgery for a perforated
ulcer, delaying shooting further.
On March 21, it was announced
that shooting had begun in
Wellington, New Zealand. Jackson
also posted two images of himself
on his Facebook page hanging out
on set.
Actors Cate Blanchett, Ian
McKellen, Elijah Wood and Andy
Serkis are reprising their roles
from Rings in the prequel, which
centres on Bilbo (Freeman) finding
the supernatural ring and passing
it on to his nephew, Frodo (Wood).
The first of the two movies is
planned for a December 2012
release and the second is expected
a year later.

Jackie Rice as pearl diver
Sarah and Charice to record together
JACKIE Rice graces GMA 7’s afternoon block in the
drama Sisid after Nita Negrita on Dramarama in the

only pearl diver on the island. She took up extreme diving

Her three leading men are Dominic Roco as Sigfried

Dexter (Sigfried’s best friend who will also fall for her).

wish for it to happen. It is definitely going to be a grand gesture for both, whose fans don’t necessarily want them to
mingle because of past differences. The project will show off
the magnanimity of both artists, both being big stars in their

top of the project after they got prompting from the camp of

Jennylyn dating Manzano

makes her laugh and
that’s a big help for her
wounds to heal
HAT’S the real score between Jennylyn
Mercado and Luis Manzano? They were
spotted together recently at Maroon 5’s
concert.
“We hang out a lot. Just because we are dating doesn’t mean we’re a couple,” Jennylyn clarifies. “I don’t
know why some people are insinuating that we are
together.”
She insists that she’s not ready yet to enter into another relationship. “ I’m still in the healing process after my
split-up with Dennis (Trillo). Luis makes me laugh a lot
and that’s a big help for my wounds to heal.”
Has she met Luis’ mom, Vilma Santos? “Yup, I met her
on Luis’ birthday,” says Jennylyn. “I was overwhelmed.
Both of them are very nice and kind.”
What lessons has she learned from her previous relationships? “Love yourself before anything else,” she
muses. “Try to know more the person before you jump
into relationship.”
If and when Jennylyn and Luis fall for each other,
hopefully both of them will apply all the love lessons
they’ve learned, so it won’t be just a repeat with the same
happily-Never-after ending.
