Seasonal Recipe
Try this variation on summer
pudding making the most of the
early Autumn fruits, such as plums,
blackberries and delicious English
apples. Serve with softly whipped
double cream flavoured with a
splash of Calvados for a really
indulgent dessert.
Place the sugar and 200ml of cold
water in a large pan and heat gently
until the sugar has dissolved. Add
the sliced apples and simmer for
5-10 minutes until just tender. Add
the rest of the fruit and simmer for a
further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool.
Remove the crusts from the bread
slices. Use a round cookie cutter to
stamp out a circle from one slice
of bread to fit the base of a 1.2 litre
pudding basin. Cut the remaining
slices of bread in half.
Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup
from the cooled fruit into a shallow
dish. Lightly dip most of the slices
of bread into the syrup and arrange
around the side of the pudding
basin, overlapping them slightly to
completely line the basin. Dip the
bread circle into the syrup and press
into the bottom of the basin.
Spoon the fruit into the lined basin,
pressing down gently with the back
of a spoon. Use the remaining slices
of bread to cover the fruit filling
completely and spoon over any
remaining syrup.
Place a saucer on top of the basin
and weigh it down with 2-3 food
cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. To
serve, carefully turn the pudding out
onto a plate and decorate with extra
sliced fruit.

peeled, cored and sliced
• 4 red plums, halved, stones
removed and sliced
• 100g raspberries
• 100g strawberries, hulled and
sliced
• 100g blackcurrants or
blueberries
• 100g blackberries
• 10 slices thick-sliced white
bread
• Extra fruit, to decorate
Serves 6

7 Top Tips For Choosing & Fitting Curtain Poles
by Alison Constantine of Atmospheric Interiors
1. Always choose a pole suitable for the weight of your curtains. In general full
length made to measure lined curtains will be medium to heavy weight and will
need a pole with a diameter of 28mm as a minimum. Black out and Thermal
linings are heavier than standard linings and will add considerable weight to
your curtains.
2. Generally speaking the availability and choice of curtain pole does reduce
considerably after 3.6m (12ft) and for wider windows you will need to speak to a
specialist supplier. It`s better to take advice initially, than to spend money on a
pole which starts to bow under the weight of your curtains
3. Care with telescopic poles, the join between the poles should always be in the
centre as otherwise, the curtain will catch on the join whenever you try to open
and close the curtains. Don`t forget that one curtain will also appear longer than
the other as the telescopic centre pole is at a different height to the outer pole. For
this reason, we do not recommend telescopic poles.
4. To get a good fixing when fitting your curtain pole, make sure you are using
the rights screws and plugs for the type of wall. Generally, the screws and plugs
supplied with your curtain pole will be for use on a solid wall. So if you live in
a modern house you will find that the wall construction above the window is
plaster board followed by a void area followed by a solid block wall. If this is the
case, our top tip is to drive the plug through the void so it fixes into the solid wall
behind. Don`t forget to use the correct type of plugs for plaster board and a longer
screw to allow you to fix into the solid block work.
5. The maximum space between the bracket and the finial should be 2.5cm/1in
– just enough space for one curtain ring
6. Ideally the curtain pole should be 15-30cm/6in-12in past the window on either
side
7. If your do not have space for face fixing brackets, some curtain poles have
ceiling brackets or recess brackets as an alternative. Again this is a specialist
option for do seek advice on this.

Preparing your body for
Pregnancy
If you’re hoping to become pregnant then make sure
your body is ready for this exciting time in your life
If you’re trying for a baby then you need to ensure
that your body is a safe haven so your baby can
develop healthily during your pregnancy. The first 12
weeks are particularly important as this is when your
baby goes through major developments in a very
short period.
By looking after your body from the moment you
start thinking about becoming pregnant you will be
laying good foundations for the months ahead as
your body changes.
Eating healthily
A healthy body weight is important for fertility.
Being too overweight or underweight can affect the
hormones needed to stimulate ovulation.
A well-balanced diet will give you the best chance
of conceiving. You should eat plenty of potatoes
and pasta to provide complex carbohydrates, at least
five portions of fruit and vegetables a day and three
portions of dairy, such as yoghurt and cheese. You
should also include 2-3 portions of protein in the
form of meat, fish or cooked lentils a day, too. You
only need a small amount of fatty foods to gain their
benefits, such as avocados, nuts and fatty fish.
Drink plenty of fluids - around two litres a day. This
should be mainly water, but milk, herbal teas and
fruit juices are also good.
Keep your kitchen clean and always cook food well to
avoid infections such as Salmonella and Listeria. You
should start taking folic acid supplements as soon
as you can and check with your GP to see if they
recommend any other vitamins.
Foods to avoid: Cut down on salty, sugary and fatty
foods as they provide very little health benefit. Avoid
blue cheese such as Stilton and Gorgonzola or those
which have a soft rind of mould, such as Camembert,
as well as pates as these tend to contain liver and
liver products. Avoid eating raw fish, such as Sushi

Relaxation
Deciding to have a baby is the first step to a major
life change. You may not become
pregnant as quickly as you
hoped, but it’s important to try
and remain relaxed. Prioritise
your tasks, make sure you give
yourself enough ‘downtime’ and
pamper yourself. Some people
find meditating is a wonderful
way to calm the mind and think
positively.
Exercise
If you exercise regularly there
is no need to stop this until the
later months of your pregnancy,
unless your GP advises otherwise
or you take part in extreme sports.
If you don’t do much exercise,
now is a good time to start
some gentle activities. Regular,
moderate exercise (30 minutes,
three times a week) can improve
your physical well being and
mood and ensure your body is in
good shape for pregnancy. It will
also help you to build stamina
and become supple and flexible,
which will help you during
labour. Swimming, walking and
yoga are all good exercises if
you’re just starting out.
By starting early, you are giving
your baby the best chance of a
healthy time in the womb, leaving
you to enjoy your pregnancy.

A House Divided...?
isputes between
cohabiting couples about
property ownership – who
owns what and in what shares
- frequently result in court
proceedings, some of which
make headline news as the
existing law is developed or
reinforced.
Surprisingly, property disputes arise
even though we do have relatively
flexible property ownership in England
and Wales. Problems occur mainly
because the parties’ intentions are not
reflected in the legal ownership to the
property and there is no written
declaration of the owners’ intentions.
There is no body of law specifically
tailored for cohabiting couples and
the courts’ basis for resolving these
disputes is set in the law of contract
and/or Trusts which has developed
over many years.
Property ownership is not automatically
assumed between cohabiting couples
regardless of the length of time the
parties live together. Although
newspapers very often refer to
cohabiting parties as “common law
husband” or “common law wife” these
terms are meaningless in the legal
sense and do not have any legal
standing or recognition. Put simply if
your name is not on the title deeds to
the property you will need to persuade
a court that the intention was for the
equity in the property to be shared
between you. This will require you
seeking expert advice from a solicitor
as soon as possible.
Disputes can also arise when parents
who provide a deposit for a ‘child’
towards the purchase of a property
seek to recover this at a later date
- usually if the child and his/her partner
are going through a divorce or separation. All parties who are involved in the
initial purchase – parents and ‘child’
- should take legal advice as to how
to achieve what they intend including
how to pre-empt problems if something
should go wrong.
Disputes can be avoided by entering
into a written declaration either at the
time of purchasing the property/ when
cohabitation commences or any time
thereafter. Even where you have a
written declaration of trust you can
update this to record changing
circumstances.

Local Wildlife -Buzzards
O
f the resident breeding birds of
prey which have increased in
numbers, both locally and
nationally, the Buzzard is perhaps
the one which has most seen a
significant rise in its population.
Normally a
moorland
and farmland bird,
Buzzards
can now be
seen along
motorway
verges and
dual carriageways
and are a
common sight as they soar effortlessly on the thermal wind currents
looking for a potential meal.
A Buzzard’s diet consists of rabbits,
lizards, worms, beetles, small
mammals and carrion such as ‘road
kill’ victims, hence the reason you
now see it along roadsides. In fact,
a few weeks ago, I personally saw a
large male Buzzard perched on the
road sign at junction 28 M1 at rush
hour without a care in the world
and totally oblivious to the cars and
heavy freight trucks thundering by.
The likelihood for
its increase in
numbers is probably
due to the banning
of Myxomatosis in
the control of
rabbits which is the
Buzzards favourite
food, plus more cars
on the road, means
more ‘road kill’.
Sometimes, people
mistake these large
birds for Eagles, but the Eagle has
much more splayed primary
feather, is much bigger in size and
is usually seen only in wild
moorland and mountain regions
such as the Scottish Highlands.
Female buzzards will lay 2-3 eggs in
April/May and like all birds of prey,
in a good year all will survive, but
in a poor year for hunting, probably
only one will make it to adulthood.
So their numbers are kept in check
by mother nature, rather than the
gamekeepers shotgun in these
enlightened times.
So the next time you are out and
about on your travels and you see
a large eagle like bird soaring in
circles above a field or roadside
verge, the chances will be it is the
Common Buzzard on the lookout
for another meal.
