06 Solomon Warner meets Athlete Daniel Romeril
FRIDAY 26 JUNE 2015 JERSEY EVENING POST 69 SPORT Jersey 2015 Creating a buzz on Twitter... jersey sport.com Your guide to Island clubs, sports and associations The last in a series of six Games profiles by Year 12 pupils from Victoria College Daniel Romeril in training for his steeplechase event at the FB Fields last night Picture: JASON FOX (9275388) Dan’s primed for starter’s gun AS the NatWest Island Games draws ever closer, athletes across Jersey have been training day in, day out to prepare themselves for what’s to come – and 26-year-old Dan Romeril is no exception. The steeplechase runner has prepared well for his debut appearance at the biennial event, not only training throughout the past year in his specified discipline but also by using other sports to boost his fitness levels. An avid footballer, Romeril has managed to maintain his high level of fitness throughout the winter months by playing the sport he loves, which he hopes will help his cause at FB Fields in the coming days. Currently playing with St Brelade SSC, the former Hautlieu student cites former Manchester Samoa boost for Team Jersey youths (Cont from page 72) Follow live updates @JEPsport moment, but we’re going to spend ten days in the Gold Coast before travelling to Samoa, and while some may still be too young in 2018 it will give them all an insight into what’s happening. ‘The swimmers will hopefully compete in the Queensland State Championships, Stuart will take part in some sessions with the Southport tennis players and the athletes will be able to train with Griffiths University. ‘I’m pretty sure there will be some very good athletes there [in Samoa], but I also know that the cultural experience will be fantastic, and will Athletics by Solomon Warner United star Ryan Giggs as a major influence, saying: ‘When I was younger, he was the one that made me want to run faster than anybody else.’ Many athletes have inspirational role models that they strive to emulate and take motivation from. As well as Giggs, Romeril also views double Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah as an example of someone who fights through every race in order to reach the pinnacle of his sport. The Jersey athlete, who admires Farah’s desire to leave nothing else on the track also says: ‘His ability to “kick” when everyone else is fading is astonishing.’ While looking up to professional ath- letes, it could be easy to forget role models closer to home, however Romeril regards Ben and Katie Silva – who will both be competing at Jersey 2015 – as also having had a huge influence on his sporting career. He describes them both as: ‘Experienced Island Games athletes, great coaches and great friends.’ A true portrayal of passion for the Games can be highlighted by what Romeril believes to be his proudest sporting moment; qualifying for the biennial event. Although he is still relatively new to athletics – and ever more inexperienced in the discipline of steeplechase – next Wednesday, as the starter’s gun sounds for the start of the men’s steeplechase, Jersey’s Romeril will certainly be one spectators should keep their eye on. Yuri Pereira (Shot), Sam Maher (1,500m) and Dami Williams (100 and 200m) have been selected for the Commonwealth Youth Games Picture: JON GUEGAN (9303494) stay with them for the rest of their lives.’ The team will fly out towards the end of August for their pre-Games training camp before the opening ceremony takes place on 5 September. Cycling: Halksworth 18th at time trial nationals TEAM JERSEY triathlete Dan Halksworth finished 18th at the British National Time Trial Cycling Championship in Lincolnshire yesterday, finishing the 45km course 7 min 55 sec behind winner Alex Dowsett. Dowsett, whose UCI hour record was beaten by Sir Bradley Wiggins earlier this month, beat his closest challenger by over three and a half minutes. Halksworth tweeted yesterday: ‘Today I race British TT nationals, finished 18th. Not really the result I wanted but it was a great experience. Now @NWIslandGames Sunday!’
