In the second collection today, we are
supporting Pope Francis and his charitable
works. The Peter’s Pence Collection is taken
up worldwide to support our brothers and
sisters on the margins of society, including
victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. In this Jubilee Year of
Mercy, the collection is an opportunity to join with Pope Francis and be
a witness of charity to or suffering brothers and sisters. Please be
generous in today’s collection. For more information, please visit
usccb.org/catholic-giving/opportunities-for-giving/peters-pence/.
Charlie and Barb Martin
June 25, 1991
Congratulations. It takes a lot of patience, Christ’s love and commitment
to reach such a milestone. We are so happy for Charlie and Barb. Please
remember this couple, and all who are called to the vocation of marriage
in your prayers.
INDEPENDENCE DAY

Knights of Columbus Council 3369 has arranged to bring the traveling
Silver Rose to St. Columbkille. The Silver Rose program was begun by the
Knights in 1960. Today, several roses are carried, from parish to parish,
from Canada, across the US to Mexico, with prayers at each stop asking
the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe in our efforts to defend the
God-given value of human life. The Silver Rose Ceremony of Prayer
and Scripture will take place at St. Columbkille Church on Wednesday
evening, July 6th after the 7:00 p.m. Mass. All are invited to participate in
this beautiful devotion. Please go to stcolumbkille.org/k-of-c-silver-roseceremony for the links or go to these sites: kofc.org/en/columbia/detail/

CALLED FOR FREEDOM
No yoke of slavery for us. Even though people are shackled, suppressed,
oppressed – and even though I may be, too – we are, called for freedom.
Christ, in His Paschal Mystery, His death and rising, has set us free.
Baptism makes us new and sets us free. The old and the new law – “love
your neighbor as yourself” – set us free. Singing the song for the gathering
of the gifts during the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper every Holy
Thursday – Ubi Caritas – sets us free.
• What yoke will I step out of to be free?
• Who can I help into freedom in this Mercy Year?
• Who will I love … as myself?

HOLY HUMOR
A father was reading Bible stories to his young son. He read, “The man
named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city, but his
wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt.” His son asked,
“What happened to the flea?”

ROSARY CORNER
“Be faithful to the time spent in prayer and make sure that at
least half of your prayer is spent in silence. This will bring you
closer to Jesus. If you deepen your prayer life you will grow
in holiness and obtain many graces for the souls entrusted
to your care. Deepen your love for one another by praying
for each other and by sharing thoughts and graces you have
received in prayer and reading.”
— Bl. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, p. 56,
an excerpt from Thirsting For God.

St. Columbkille Catholic Parish is 150 years old and we are celebrating,
praising God with Thanksgiving for sustaining and nourishing us and
bringing us to this place in time. This Sunday afternoon, JUNE 26, 2016,
at 2:00 p.m.
Our Archbishop the Most Reverend Dennis M. Schnurr will join us
celebrating the Mass of Thanksgiving and will be joined by some of our
former pastors and sons of the Parish in concelebrating. Several of our
former teachers from the Ursuline Community plan to join us. The voices
of all our choirs with other parishioners are coming together to lead us
in the beautiful musical praise for which they are noted. Following the
Mass we will celebrate in the Parish Center with appetizers and birthday
cake and most of all fellowship. Memorabilia of the history of our Church
and Parish will be on display there. Many of our Parish Ministries and
Organizations including our young people are working hard to bring our
Parish and Community together to give Praise and Honor to our God for
His blessings over the last 150 years. We hope you will join your fellow
Parishioners and Community in CELEBRATION!
Couples are often surprised to learn that many NFP users report
that NFP helps improve their relationship. Those considering NFP
are usually concerned about periods of abstinence when trying to
postpone pregnancy, and yet NFP users say those times apart help
them connect on a deeper level. NFP helps keep their relationship
fresh, fun and flirty, almost like a return to their courtship days. NFP
couples also talk about increased respect for each other, often coming
from the shared responsibility of the method. NFP couples feel more
like a team, and that extends beyond the issue of family planning.
Finally, many couples find that NFP helps them build a deeper and
closer relationship to God since they are experiencing marriage as He
intended. Video-based online self-paced courses are available along
with personal consultation and help through The Couple to Couple
League. Visit ccli.org for more information on the benefits of NFP
and the options for taking a full course to learn the sympto-thermal
method based on a woman’s day-to-day symptoms of fertility. Pursue
a more joyful marriage – learn Natural Family Planning!

FEASTS CELEBRATED THIS WEEK
June 26 – Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Luke 9:51 – 62: This passage is troubling. Even those who say they will follow Jesus are rebuked. In following Jesus Christ, we often
encounter obstacles. Those obstacles can be from the outside when others deem our desire not worthy or a waste of time. Sometimes,
obstacles come from within when we allow insecurities and priorities to keep us from putting Jesus first. I do not think that Jesus does not
want us to “bury the dead”. It is after all a corporal work of mercy. I think he wants us to speak of God’s glory first. He wants us to work
for God’s glory first. He wants us to be other-centered.
Prayer: Take some time this week to reflect on when it is easiest to put Jesus first and when it is most challenging. What steps can you take
to respond to those challenging times?
Action: Pick a time when it is challenging to be other-centered or Christ-centered and take a step to put Christ or someone else first. It is
your morning routine that does not allow for you to talk with your spouse or other family member? What about when you get home is the
evening, do you go right to preparing dinner? When you go to Church, do you talk to the same people and sit in the same pew? Maybe
you can reach out to greet someone new.
June 27 – St. Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop & Doctor of the Church
St. Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria, one of the metropolitan sees of the Christian Church in the east, was one of the great defenders
of the faith against the heresy of Nestorius who denied the oneness of person in Jesus Christ. At the Council of Ephesus in 431,
over which he presided in the Pope’s name, and at his instigation, it was defined that Christ, the Son of God, is at the same time
God and man, and the Blessed Virgin Mary, His mother, is truly the Mother of God. St. Cyril died in 444. The Church venerates
him as one of her great doctors. His commentary on the Gospel of St. John is one of the richest doctrinally of those left us by the
Fathers of the Church.
June 28 – St. Irenaeus, Bishop & Martyr
St. Irenaeus was born in Asia Minor around the year 140. It is not known when he came to Gaul. He was a priest of the Church of Lyons
during the persecution of 177 when St. Pothinus, first bishop of the city and the first martyr of Lyons, was put to death. Irenaeus succeeded
him as bishop and twenty-five years later was martyred in his turn during a fresh persecution. At a time when Gnostic sects threatened
to undermine Christianity by a perversion of Christian thought, St. Irenaeus vigorously denounced all heresies and safeguarded unity of
belief by laying down the principles of the doctrinal tradition of the Church.
June 29 – Saints Peter & Paul, Apostles
We commemorate Saints Peter and Paul, martyred around the year 64 A.D. during Nero’s persecution following the Great Fire of Rome.
Tradition says that Peter fled Rome to avoid arrest, and saw Jesus on the road. “Where are you going, Lord?” Peter asked. Jesus replied, “I
am going to Rome to be crucified again.” Peter turned back, and was crucified upside down because he felt unworthy to meet his death the
same way as Christ. Paul had been arrested in Jerusalem, and transported to Rome where he was beheaded. As a Roman citizen he could
not be subjected to the indignity of crucifixion.
June 30 – The First Martyrs of the Church of Rome
These “proto-martyrs” of Rome were the first Christians persecuted en masse by the Emperor Nero in the year 64, before the
martyrdom of Saints Peter and Paul. Nero was widely believed to have caused the fire that burned down much of Rome in
the same year. He blamed the fire on the Christians and put them to death, many by crucifixion, being fed to the wild
animals in the circus, or by being tied to posts and lit up as human torches. These martyrs were called the “Disciples of the
Apostles” and their firmness in the face of their gruesome deaths was a powerful testimony that led to many conversions in the early
Roman Church.
July 2 – Blessed Junípero Serra, Priest
Miguel Jose Serra was born on the island of Mallorca, Spain. He took the name Junipero when he entered the Franciscan Order
in 1730. Ordained in 1737, he taught philosophy and theology at the University of Padua for twelve years. At age 37, he went to
Mexico City where he spent the rest of his life working for the conversion of the peoples of the New World. Largely responsible
for the spread of the Church on the West Coast of the United States including, San Diego, and San Francisco. Junipero founded
21 missions all together and converted thousands of Native Americans.

we get our bulletin printed free of charge to the parish. We ask you, our parish family and guests, to consider these advertisers as a source of
future business. Please mention you saw their ads on our bulletin! We would like to thank our local advertisers for their support and encourage
everyone to shop local to support our local economy.
