Our Honoree
Kathy Vuoncino has always wanted to be a teacher, and can remember
growing up playing “school” in her basement every day, with real desks, a
chalkboard, and old worksheets. Her lifelong career has been working with
children with special needs, and each day has been more gratifying than the
next. She was very lucky to have been welcomed to the Valley Program by
Dr. John McKeon back in 2001 as the Assistant Director/Principal of Region
III Council for Special Education. The Little Tots preschool and SLICE
programs were later added, offering services for neuro-typical preschoolers
integrated with preschool disabled children. The Therapeutic Intervention
Program (TIP) began in 2011, the year Kathy became the Director/Principal
of the Program, and has grown to three classrooms. She has witnessed the
Valley program grow to its current twenty-three classrooms in seven
locations.
Kathy credits her amazing staff, the parents of the Program’s students, and
the support from the Northern Valley Administration and Board of
Education with the success of the Program.
Kathy is blessed with a wonderful, supportive family, especially her
husband of thirty-six years, Dave, and their three beautiful children:
Christopher, who recently moved to California to realize his dream as a
“rock star;” Alicia, who lives in Rutherford, a speech and language therapist
in River vale; and Kaleigh, a senior at the University of Tampa, studying to
be an occupational therapist. Kathy couldn’t be more proud of her own
children for their achievements and the countless hours they’ve allowed her
to spend with her “other children” at work. She feels what she does is not a
“job,” but a way of expressing and demonstrating her passion and love for
children and teaching. She is forever grateful for being honored this evening
and hopes this event will help make all of our wishes come true!
