SESSION THREE: The business of filmmaking
Country Focus: IRELAND
An opportunity to discover more about the business of filmmaking in Ireland, covering development,
production, distribution and exhibition. This business session compliments the Iris Prize focus, which
is looking at how LGBT people from Ireland are represented on film. The Ireland focus is produced in
association with Gaze film festival in Dublin and with support from OUTburst, Belfast. Speakers include:

SESSION FOUR: Talent Development: Straeon Iris
The aim of the Straeon Iris scheme is to encourage more LGBT stories for the screen, from Wales, about
Wales and in Welsh. The scheme is focused on developing up to six short film scripts (max 10 mins
duration) before selecting one to go into production. Today’s workshop, through the medium of Welsh,
will see some of the short-listed finalists pitch their script ideas to the audience, who in turn will offer
valuable feedback.

Who is your audience?
An opportunity for those who have a direct relationship with the audience to tell a few tales! What do
audiences like and what makes them angry? Sometimes you feel that the audience might have been
ignored when a film goes into production? In an industry obsessed with development and production this
is an opportunity for the public-facing side to discuss and share their experiences.

Judy Wasdell - Breakout Room 1
Judy Wasdell is Manager of Creative Europe Desk UK Wales. Judy has worked in the film and TV industry
for over 25 years formerly for Richard Attenborough Productions, the BBC and MEDIA Antenna Wales.
Creative Europe Desk UK Wales was established in April 2014 to promote the new European Union
Creative Europe Programme that brought the previous MEDIA and Culture Programmes together under
one new Programme.
Sion Clwyd Roberts -Breakout Room 1
Sion joined Cardiff law firm Capital Law in February 2010 is a Media and IP Specialist at having previously
spent over 20 years in programme Finance, Legal and Business Affairs Departments at S4C and ITV gaining
extensive knowledge of the film and television production and broadcasting businesses. He currently
heads up the Media team which advises a range of companies and individuals in broadcasting, film,
television and commercials production and compliance; music publishing and production, book and
online publishing and IP matters generally. He also manages the relationship between Capital Law and
sports clients, Cardiff City and Cardiff Blues.
Sian Gale - Breakout Room 2
Siân juggles managing the BECTU led CULT Cymru learning project funded by the Welsh Government with
working as a qualified trainer and consultant specialising in Business Skills and Equality and Diversity.
Siân is passionate about supporting people in their career progression. She is a trustee of the Welsh
Broadcasting Trust.
Gwawr Thomas - Breakout Room 2
Gwawr Thomas is the Director of Creative Skillset Cymru, the skills body for the creative industries in
Wales. Her role is to establish and oversee all industry-led skills and training programmes for the creative
industries, offering support to employers, freelancers, new entrants, training providers and sector
support organisations.
Katherine Piffer - Breakout Room 2
Katherine coordinates the Development & Production team, as well as the BFI NETWORK. She has worked
in Script Development for Matador Pictures, Sonia Friedman Productions and Minnow Films. Holding
a BA in Scriptwriting for Film and Television, Katherine has demonstrated her passion for screenwriting
winning Best Short Film, Best Screenplay and the coveted Rising Star Awards at Monaco International
Film Festival 2013. She continues to write alongside script development consultancy.
Hannah Thomas - Breakout Room 2
Hannah Thomas is Head of Creative Sector Development at Ffilm Cymru Wales, where she heads up the
talent and development team. Before joining Ffilm Cymru Wales she worked for the drama department
at the BBC where she had more than ten years experience in development and production. She produced
PyC for BBC Wales which was the first ever Welsh language multi-platform drama and she produced
Becoming Human, the multi-platform extension of Being Human for Touchpaper amongst numerous
other projects. Hannah is studying for an MA in Film and Television Production and is specialising in cross
platform/cross media storytelling.
Adam Partridge - Breakout Room 2
Adam joined Ffilm Cymru Wales in January 2007 and has worked across a range of projects including Ivan
Kavanagh’s psychological horror The Canal and Louise Osmond’s documentary Dark Horse.

Christopher is the director of development at Outfest - the leading organization that promotes
equality by creating, sharing and protecting LGBT stories on the screen. He is also an award winning
independent film producer that has raised over $5m to produce narrative films and documentaries.
SESSION ONE:
Jay Bedwani
Jay is a documentary filmmaker from Wales. His first two films played in a number of international
film festivals, with MY MOTHER winning Best British Short at the Iris International and London LiftOff film festivals. He has just shot his third short with the support of Ffilm Cymru, and he is currently
developing his first feature to be filmed in California in 2016.
Lloyd Eyre-Morgan
Lloyd Eyre-Morgan is a film director, producer and writer who trained at UCLA Film School and has
3 feature films released with TLA Releasing. Lloyd has also directed 5 theatre shows in Manchester.
Lloyd’s latest short film film Closets is currently being developed into a feature film.
Katie White
Katie White is an award winning, Scottish BAFTA NTA nominee and a pro-active member of the
Scottish Independent filmmaking scene. She wrote / co-produced last year’s Iris Prize winning Best
British short Middle Man. Katie is at present looking into funding her first feature film and Edinburgh
Festival play in 2016.
Andrew Smith - Chair
Andrew is the director of stategy and communications at Pinewood Studios, as well as company
secretary. Prior to this he was Managing Partner of The Policy Partnership. He is a member of the
Film Skills Council, the Skillset Craft and a Technical Skills Academy Industry Board, the British Film
Commission Advisory Board and the Buckinghamshire Thames Valley Local Enterprise Partnership. He
is a Non-Executive Director of Bucks Business First Ltd.

Deborah Williams
Deborah joined the BFI in June 2015 as the diversity manager, where she has been overseeing the
implementation of the wide reaching diversity remit ‘3 ticks’. With over thirty years experience working
as an artist, consultant and manager Deborah is an established leader in disability arts, playing a
significant role in the implementation of the Disability Discrimination Act and Equality Act across the
creative and cultural sector.

SESSION THREE:
Cian Smyth
Cian Smyth is a producer and curator with more than 15 years experience in delivering festivals,
events and public artworks of scale. Building creative partnerships between artists and organisations,
he has worked for The Space, 1418 Now, London 2012, the UK Film Council and Northern Ireland
Screen. He founded the Maysles Award at Belfast Film Festival, previously been programme director
at GAZE - Dublin International LGBT Film Festival and is currently Chairperson of Outburst Arts.
Roisin Geraghty
Roisín is the film programmer for Gaze LGBT Film Festival in Dublin. She is also an independent
documentary producer, and is passionate about the creation and curation of narrative and
documentary film. Pre-Gazing, she worked with various film organisations in both Ireland and the US,
including Galway Film Fleadh, Irish Film New York, and the Independent Filmmaker Project.
Eoin Maher
Writer and Director of ‘No Strings’ which is screening as part of this years Iris Prize competition. His
film recently won Filmmaker of the Future at the Oscar Qualifying Rhode Island International Film
Festival. Recently graduated from London Film School he works as a script reader and sound recordist
while he seeks funding for future projects.
Hannah Raybould - Chair
Hannah has worked in creative media and training/education in Wales for 18 years, starting out as a
location assistant and coordinator for the Celtic Media Festival. She has managed a portfolio of EU,
British Council and BFI funded training programmes as well as projects linking academics and creative
practitioners for Knowledge Exchange, as part of Creative Skillset Media Academy Wales.She is now
the Director of BAFTA Cymru following engagement with the organisation’s charitable remit as a
Committee member and regular partner on events.
SESSION FOUR:
Gwawr Martha Lloyd
Gwawr Martha Lloyd is the Content Commissioner responsible for Drama and Rural Programmes at
S4C. Previously Gwawr was as a Drama Producer at the BBC and worked on many popular drama
series’ including Pobol y Cwm (People of the Valley), the long-running Welsh soap opera. She was the
Assistant Producer on the BBC1 series Mistresses, and was involved in developing projects and talent
within BBC Wales’ drama department.
Tracy Spottiswoode
Tracy oversees Talent Development for the BFI NET.WORK and joined Ffilm Cymru Wales in 2010
having established a career as an award-winning writer, director and animator, as well as professional
script editing and creative writing consultancies. Screen work includes commissions from BBC Films,
S4C and indies such as Fiction Factory and Red Planet. Her animations picked up Gold in Chicago, First
in BAF, plus 3 BAFTA Cymru & 2 Celtic Film Festival awards.
SESSION FIVE:
Adam Silver
Adam Silver has been at the helm of TLA UK, one the world’s most prominent LGBT distributors, for
going on 8 years. In addition to managing all UK operations, he also acquires films for all of their
territories.
Will Machin
Prior to becoming a partner in Metro International Entertainment, Will was head of Ealing Metro
International, created through a merger between Ealing Studios International and Metropolis Film
Sales. Before the merger, he was Head of Distribution at Ealing Studios International (DORIAN GRAY,
ST TRINIANS franchise) responsible for international distribution and day-to-day operations at the
company. He was previously head of the Capitol Films (GOSFORD PARK) specialist division, Thinkfilm
International where he was responsible for a diverse slate of films from directors such as Nigel Cole
and Alex de la Iglesia. He was also the sales representative on Dan y Wenallt / Under Milk Wood.
Noel Sutton,
Festival Director with GAZE International LGBT Film festival. Noel took the lead with GAZE in 2011
and has produced and developed the biggest festivals to date, with a very well established, behind
the scene, career in film and TV. Noel is campaigner and activist on LGBT right in Ireland, he worked
on the recent Marriage Equality Referendum campaign that successfully seen Ireland be the first
country in the world to legalise marriage equality.
Paul Sweeney
Paul is a film consultant at VUE Cinemas, he was previously the senior film buyer at Cineowlrd
Cinemas, the number one cinema chain in the UK and Ireland. With over 15 years’ experience in the
film industry, recent career highlights include selecting two time Scottish BAFTA 2011 winner Donkeys
and Fast Romance that picked up the audience award for exclusive screenings.
Hana Lewis
Hana is the Strategic Manager of Film Hub Wales (FHW). Led by Chapter and funded through the BFI’s
Film Audience Network, FHW aims to increase access for audiences to independent cinema through
training, research and project support for the exhibition sector. Hana has an MPhil in American Film
and Literature from the University of Birmingham and previously held roles with Ffilm Cymru Wales,
Flatpack and Leeds Film Festival.
Jayne Graham-Cummings - Chair
Jayne Graham-Cummings is the Director of Queer Vision, Bristol Pride’s film festival and a project
manager of the Queer Film Network. Launched in April 2015, Queer Vision has been developed over
the past four years into a five day festival within Pride plus strands throughout the year. Inspired by
the transformative ability of film, Jayne sees the development and promotion of Queer cinema as
political, personal, and having an essential place within LGBTQIA+ culture and it’s community.
