Care, Respect, Love In 2007, Greg Dunham, M.D., Shannon Clinic OB/GYN, was part of a dream to help meet the physical and psychological needs of the people of Itu, Brazil. Out of this dream, he helped establish CURA (Cuidado, Respeito, Amor or Care, Respect, Love) Campanha Médica (Medical Campaign). Fast forward six years—through lots of time, hard work and prayer—and his collaborative efforts with local officials and healthcare providers have resulted in recognition as a primary care clinic within the Brazilian Health Care System of Itu. This past May, during the annual meeting, Dr. Dunham received recognition in America in the form of The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Award for International Service. The award is given to a Fellow of The College who is currently, or was currently, involved in a community program designed to help underserved patient populations outside the geographical confines of The College. Nominations for the award were sent in from all over the country. 6 “This campaign started like any other mission— to help those that need help,” Dr. Dunham said. “There is nowhere near enough money or medical personnel in the Brazilian healthcare system to assist the need of the people. In the majority of cases, tests are used in place of an actual doctor and the patients wait several months for results. So, we asked what we could do to help and it has grown from there.” In July 2009, with the cooperation of Itu officials, the collaborative efforts of Brazilian and American practitioners and students from the medical school in Sao Paulo, 745 patients were seen in the areas of gynecology, cardiology, dentistry, general medicine and counseling. This past summer, the team administered care to more than 950 patients in the areas of gynecology, psychology and counseling, dentistry, cardiology, internal and family medicine, physical therapy, optometry and ophthalmology, laboratory and ultrasound testing, and otolaryngology. Recognition as a primary care clinic allows access to the local pharmacies and secondary referral sources. As growth continues, Dr. Dunham anticipates the addition of even more capabilities. “We are ministering to those who are suffering,” Dr. Dunham said. “All care is provided with the understanding that Jesus Christ is the Great Physician, and it is the intent of our efforts that the relief of physical suffering will show forth the love of God and let the people know that He is the only true source of healing. All participants are expected to be the embodiment of the hands, feet and heart of Jesus Christ.” Additionally, patients attending the clinic are taught the relationship between hygiene and health, and information is provided to promote dental health, improvements in nutrition and to better understand all aspects of health. “Our hope is that within the next several months not-for-profit status will be approved and, with additional fundraising, a bus can be obtained to increase the ability to see more dental and eye patients,” Dr. Dunham says. “This year we will be moving to a completely new neighborhood with the anticipation of new challenges and opportunities. God continues to bless this ministry!” Howard College Regional Testing Site for Nurse Aide Program Shannon welcomes New Physicians Raj Cheruku, M.D., Oncology/Hematology Dr. Raj Cheruku received his medical degree from Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal, Andhra Pradesh, India, then went on to complete his internship at St. Louis Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., and his residency at Edward Hines, Jr. V.A. Hospital and Foster McGaw Hospital of the Loyola University in Illinois. Dr. Cheruku also completed a fellowship in the division of hematology-oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Mich. Dr. Cheruku returns to San Angelo and Shannon Clinic, where he practiced from 1995-2007, from Brenham, Texas. He welcomes new patients to his office in the Shannon Oncology Center located in Shannon Medical Plaza Ste. 110, 102 N. Magdalen. For more info, call (325) 481-2025. Scott Huard, D.O., Anesthesiology After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., Dr. Huard earned his medical degree from the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific at the Western University of the Health Sciences in Pomona, Calif. He then completed his anesthesiology residency at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, Conn. Dr. Huard is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He joins Shannon from Anesthesia Associates of New Haven in Connecticut. For more info, visit www.shannonhealth.com. Randall Slimak, M.D., Hospitalist Dr. Slimak received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He then completed his internal medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Dr. Slimak is board certified in internal medicine. He comes to Shannon from CR Darnall Army Medical Center in Fort Hood, Texas. For more info, visit www.shannonhealth.com. Thanks to the partnership with Shannon, additional space at St. John’s was renovated for the new testing site. The space is located on the third floor and provides a waiting room, a bathroom, and a testing lab room which replicates a hospital room complete with beds, night stands, bed tables, privacy curtains, scales, glove boxes, nurse call devices, and cleaning service. “Creating a testing location in San Angelo would not have been possible without the donated space and equipment provided by Shannon Medical Center,” commented Jamie Rainey, Executive Director of Howard College San Angelo. “Not only did they donate space and equipment, they were so helpful in renovating the space to meet the requirements of NACES for a test site. We can’t thank Shannon enough for being our partner in providing a test site for our region.” In the past, testing through Howard College San Angelo was limited to only those students who had completed the Nurse Aide program. Now, with the new testing site, anyone needing to test can use the testing site. “Without this local testing site in San Angelo, all of our students, including Dual Credit students from the San Angelo Independent School District, would have had to travel to Big Spring to test,” added Jamie Rainey. “We are very excited to be able to provide this service here in San Angelo.” For more information on the Howard College Regional Testing Site for the Nurse Aide Certification Exam, call (325) 481-8322. 3 S H A N N O N M e d ical C e n t e r A ssocia t e S e r v ic e A w a r d r e co g ni t ion 40
