July 2016 - Syrian Shrine
The Shriek JULY/AUGUST 2016 GREETINGS NOBLES AND LADIES. THE YEAR IS HALF OVER Let’s GET SERIOUS FOR JUST A FEW MINUTES HERE. The Syrian shrine is in good shape. 2016 is moving along on a positive note. The big concerns I have been the following; Dues Revenue - We have 103 still on the delinquent dues list. To whom this concerns please pay your dues. We simply cannot afford to lose 80 members that are needed. When we lose a noble for nonpayment of dues it not only hurts the year the noble is lost. It hurts future years as well. It really hurts the following year because you have less membership to start with. This in turn has a negative impact on trying to budget the dues revenue in this case 2017. To put it mildly we cannot let the dues revenue slip below our operational costs. Every member active or inactive is needed. Every member makes a difference. Your dues for budgeting purposes are a major budgeting factor for running the temple year after year. I don’t want to be the guy that preaches about money all the time, but once or twice per year it is necessary to remind everyone that there is a financial commitment to being a Shriner. After the Dark period and from 9/l/2016 through 12/31/2016 we have a lot going on that requires your financial attention. The 2017 dues notices will be going out from Imperial on 9/l/2016, the motorcycle raffle will be drawn at the Christmas party, another Paper Crusade, the fundraising committee is having a couple more rummage sales, there is a possibility of a Jim and Jacks Bengal Bash fundraiser, the Shrine/Mason Reds game. Please realize that the circus contractual dates have been moved back to the first weekend in February. Activity book ads and sponsorships, One Liners and a very important Mom and Dad’s Effort for Circus 2017. We all know that all of this CAN NOT be financially accomplished from January1,2017 to Circus Showtime February 3,4, and 5, 2017. Most of us have two months July and August to rest up, enjoy some relaxation and vacation and hopefully regroup our spendable cash so that you can continue to support the Syrian Shrine like you have done so remarkably well in 2016 thus far. Whether you are an active member or a card carrying member in good standing please take this message to heart. If you are not in good standing, please bring your dues up current. Being the potentate 2016, Lady Kathy and myself thank you for a valiant effort the first half of the year 2016 It has been an honor and privilege for us both. Being the circus director for the 2017 circus please read the circus committee 2017 Article further along in this Shriek. With 11 Model T replicas the Caravan’s mission, mirrors that of the Shrine International….to be the premier motorized unit for men of good character, provide attractive, quality programs and services for our members, their families in a spirit of fun, fellowship and social camaraderie, and to foster self-improvement through leadership, education, the perpetuation of moral values and community involvement. Caravan members are distinguished by an enjoyment of life in the interest of philanthropy. We enjoy parades, trips, dances, dinners, sporting events, and other social occasions together. Furthermore, the Antique Caravan supports our hospitals that have become known as the “World’s Greatest Philanthropy,” in fact, this little unit has had a Cincinnati - Hospital Board Chairman, and member Dave Aaronson is currently the Vice Chairman of the Cincinnati Hospital Board, slated to be Chairman in 2017. Through fellowship and philanthropy, Shrinedom strengthens the soul and adds inner meaning to daily life. It thus spreads a glow of joy through one’s entire family. Men from all walks of life and all levels of income find fun, fellowship, and relaxation being a member of the Syrian Shrine Antique Caravan, and our activities. So it’s not too late to join the Caravan this parade season, we have cars available…contact any member. Gary Bona Court #8 From the Ladies of Bona Ct #8 welcome to summer. Our month of June was very busy. We had our ceremonial and took in Ladies to our court. They had a tour of our hospital, nice lunch and then were welcomed into our organization. After this we had our Grand High Priestess visit with us. Lady Diana Schmitt is a very fun lady to be with. We treated her to a visit of our hospital with lunch at the hospital. Then we had our “visitation” at Montgomery Lodge. We are donating a trophy for the Nobles car and bike show on June 18th. That is really a fun time. We are gearing up for Sharonfest in July. Last year we won “Best of the Fest” for our booth decorations. Fun is just around the corner there. We have a quiet August. But watch out - here comes September before we know it. Harvest home parade is September 8th, our carless car wash is September 17th. Come join us for the fun. Wanoka Motz, PHP, Bona Ct #8 Clowns Hello all, for this month’s article, I would like to feature Wheels the Clown! Wheels has been a clown for about 5 years now. When Wheels got into the clown unit he decided that he was going to clown up and clown at every hospital that the Shrine has, well he made it to most of them on the east coast, and in the south, but a deer crossing the road to get to the other side stopped him in Texarkana. Wheels is a full-time businessman with a successful company, he puts in more hours at work than most of the people that work for him. Wheels makes all the meetings maybe a minute or two late but he’s there. If Wheels is in town he’s at each and every parade and all the Shrine functions not limited to clown functions you’re see him a hillbilly rally you’re see him at the business meetings you’re see him the clown meetings you see him at the Potentate Ball you’re see him at picnics, it’s almost like there two or three of them what a scary thought. Most recently Wheels travel to Mississippi to a young man’s birthday party not wishing a happy birthday like most kids but to meet him and talk to his parents about helping him become a Shriner kid, this particular young man only has one arm so Wheels decided to become what he described as a clown in action he went to this young man party and then introduced his parents to what Shriners do. Wheels is also a food artist whenever he goes out to dinner he must make a face a :-) with his food take a photo and then post it on Facebook so whenever you need a smile on your face look at the food. In closing Wheels thank you very much for all you do for everyone that you do it for. Barrels DaClown Ishtar Temple No. 54 Daughters of the Nile, Summer is finally here! And we’re all scheduled for many picnics – just don’t forget our Summer Social on Sunday, August 14th in Evendale. Make your reservations with Princess Royal Beth Mason at 513-870-9412. For all our new members, Beth will be glad to give you directions to the Shelter House. Our Supreme Session in Indianapolis was well attended by our members, and we’re delighted that our PQ Shirley Roberts is now the Supreme Princess Tirzah (remember that in 1918 we’ll be hosting all these ladies in Cincinnati). Enjoy the summer and remember to attend our monthly session on September 10th – come out to see what a great job our Queen Karen is doing this year, along with all her officers. Marian Baird, Past Queen Flying Fez Summer is here and with it more parades to come leaving us with great memories of our past parades. Our first parade sent the Fez to Pigeon Forge Fun Fest, and Fun it was. A strong showing from our Syrian Temple was present. Lexington Hospital was our next parade and that would be the last parade at that location. Sadly we did not have a strong unit presence, but we did have our important officers and our faithful Escort Unit. After that parade we were asked by North College Hill to join them and celebrate their bicentennial parade. Surprisingly for Non-Temple Function we had a great showing and a great time. The next parade was a special time to celebrate the Memorial Day parade in Arlington Heights and the city of Reading and we had a great Unit response. After that parade a great time was had by all by having a celebration at our Temple with our families after the parade. We cannot forget our Milford Parade that took place in the rain. Again our Escort Unit who are proud to call themselves Shriners rode in the rain with their heads raised high. Of course the rain stopped at the finish line. Another great time was had by all especially our Clowns who prepared great food for us to enjoy, thanks to our chef Barrells. Finally, for the month of June the Fez will be heading to Burlington, KY. to celebrate in a carnival for our Hospital Children who would be spending a time of fun at the YMCA Camp Ernst for our children it is Camp Ytiliba to have them learn from these activities that they are loved and that we are always there for them, and to remind the world that these children are not outcast. There are so many children out there that are out of our sight and reach. My childhood world was a place that had no compassion or feelings for those children, leaving them in a space all by themselves. Lets not allow this to happen to our needy children by taking these trips in their support and show them that we care. These parades and trips are very important to me and should be to every Shriner as this is one way we can reach these children and let the world know what and who we are. Ever wonder why there is a stairway to heaven, and a highway to hell? Apparently there is more traffic to hell! Es Salamu Aleikum Sam Mattar SHRINE GOLF LEAGUE Greetings Nobles and friends. Well Nobles the birdies and pars are coming fast and frequent on this beautiful golf course. Yes, and even a few of them happen in our Syrian Shrine Golf League. We do encounter an occasional boogie, double boogie…double par. But we still, have a great time on Glenview Golf Course, one of the best maintained public courses in the area. If you would like to get nine holes in on a Thursday morning, first tee time is 8:45 and we’re usually finished by noon. The league schedule runs all the way through September. So come out and get a little exercise….you’ll love it! One little story…seems Fred was teeing off from the men’s tee and on his downswing, he realized his wife was teeing off from the women’s tee directly in front of him. Unable to stop his swing, he nailed it, and hit her directly in the temple killing her instantly. A few days later he got a call from the coroner regarding her autopsy. Coroner: “Fred, your wife died from blunt force trauma to the head. You said you hit the golf ball and hit her in the temple.” Fred: “Yes, that’s correct.” Coroner: “Well inexplicably I found a ball wedged in that certain location where the sun don’t shine.” Fred: “Was it a Titleist 3?” Coroner: “Yes, it was.” Fred: “That was my mulligan.” Fellow hackers….Keep on swingin” Dick Manifold HAMILTON SHRINE CLUB Greetings Nobles and friends. The HSC will continue to meet the 1 st Tuesday each month. Even though active membership has diminished to a great degree, there is still business to conduct. We would like to bring this active and important club back to where it once was, but we need nobles who have SYRIAN SHRINE UNITS an interest in rebuilding this Syrian Shrine Club for our area. Please consider helping us re-energize this club. Look for you at our next gathering. Dinner at 6:00 P.M., meeting to follow. Location to be determined. Each month we will choose a different restaurant/meeting place. Please R.S.V.P. by 7/4 Call Dick Manifold 829-1584 HOSPITAL HOSTS Greetings Nobles and friends. Hospital Hosts Unit would like to wish all the Moms, the happiest Mother’s Day ever. Including Grandmas and Great Grandmas. If you can spend the day with her, terrific, if not then spend a little time reminiscing about a special time you had together and her influence in making you who you are today. Also, this month of May, we should remember with pride those men and women represented on Armed Forces Day the 21st, and Memorial Day, May 30th. The Hospital Hosts Unit is always looking for Nobles willing to put to good use, a day or two, or more doing the good volunteer work at the Shriners Hospital for Children. Check us out. We meet at the hospital, on Burnet Ave, each 2nd and 4th Tuesday, 9:30 A.M. Meetings last about an hour and parking is convenient in the attached hospital parking garage. Now for a quick little story. Seems on the first day of the new Seniors Complex, the manager addressed all the new seniors pointing out some of the rules. “The female sleeping quarters will be out-of-bounds for all males, and the male quarters out-of-bounds to the females. Anybody caught breaking this rule will be fined $20 the first time.” He continued, “Anybody caught breaking this rule the second time will be fined $60. Being caught a third time will cost you $180. Are there any questions?” An older gentleman stood up in the crowd and inquired: “How much is it for a season pass?” My friends, live life…laugh often…love much…and keep on smiling. Dick Manifold Hillbilly Clan #5 Welcome the 4 new hillbilly guys and 5 new hillbilly gals who took part in the Hillbilly Degree in May. Thanks to everyone who brought something for the pot luck dinner and participated in the degree work. The clan donated 10 fans to camp Ytiliba for the patient cabins at summer camp. Seventeen clan members were present for the fan donation to the hospital and some fellowship at dinner afterwards. The clan will not be going dark for the summer, but here are some of the upcoming events to put on your calendar. Contact Dave Ormes, Jerry or Judy Ulm to see when the hillbilly bus will be at parades this summer. Portsmouth Parade is the first weekend in September so come out and spend the day/weekend for this parade. Pumpkin run is coming in Oct, we need all available people to come out to help park cars and serve bean dinner. Anyone is welcome to come help park cars and you can help for any amount of time. This is the clan’s biggest fund raiser for the year, so come and support the clan. The Hospital also receives a generous donation from the sponsor of this event. The hillbillies hope everyone has a nice and safe summer and look forward to seeing everyone at parades and temple function this summer. The clan is always looking for new hillbillies, so come and see what we are all about at 7:00 pm on the 4th Monday of the month at Shrine Center. Northern Kentucky Shrine Club Congratulations are extended to Illustrious Fred Robinson upon his installation as President of the Ohio Shrine Association. The club would like to recognize Bro. Monte Rummer and his wife Danielle. Bro. Monte has petitioned Syrian Shrine. He is a Mason in good standing at Alexandria Lodge and belongs to the Scottish Rite Orient of Pennsylvania. June is the month that NKSC participates in the City of Union parade. We will do so again this year. With that in mind we would like to invite all the units and clubs of Syrian to participate with us. This year’s parade will be held on Friday, July 1. Of course, the only drawback is that it’s rained every year for the past three or four years. Hopefully, it won’t rain this year. As you may know from our last article for The Shriek, the NKSC is looking for a new venue to meet. We are still looking. Hopefully we will find a place soon. Until next month. Al Tucker, Secretary Mini Racers As our unit has continued to add new members and new cars we have enjoyed participating in community and Temple events. The Milford parade was wet and fun with a great turn out. The Owensville and Norwood parades were enjoyed by all. We had fun at the Car and Bike show with a fantastic show of support. We all had a great time at the Potentate Ceremonial with honors to Art and thank you for your hard work and dedication to our Syrian Shrine. Mini Racers enjoyed being part of the Jack Ramsey benefit at the Amelia Lodge and remembering such a great man and the wonderful dedication he had to our Nobles and Temple. We continue to have our monthly meetings at By Gollys in Milford to conduct business of our unit and strengthen our friendships. We wish our member Greg Pelfrey a speedy recovery after his spinal surgery to get back to the crazy fun of being a Shriner. The Cincinnati Reds Shrine / Mason day was a lot of fun as we showed support for the Reds and enjoyed the events of the day. As we enter into September we will be participating with the Cheviot Harvest Home parade and looking forward to all of the fall events at our Shrine Temple. Doc Hakes Roadsters Well... the Milford Parade was a wash out for the Roadsters and a few other units. but we did have fun eating at Acapulcos. At our June Meeting, we have another prospective member to be voted on. Come out and meet the newest member. We still have a few cars available if you are looking for a fun family-oriented unit. Now we are gearing up for the Madeira Parade and the festival afterwards which is our biggest fundraiser of the year. We have a good time each year in our booth selling brats, metts, hot dogs, nachos and drinks. Hope we can get some of our fellow Shriners to stop by the booth and enjoy the fireworks show that evening. Later on in July is the Owensville Parade and the Norwood Parade - hope to see all of our cars and other fellow units at these events. In August we will be having our Roadster family gettogether at Lake Waynoka. We wish everyone a safe and happy Summer SYRIAN SHRINE UNITS Oriental Band Dan Depenbrock, Director..Happy to report that our Syrian Oriental Band won four (4) first place trophy’s at the annual Great Lakes Society of Oriental Bands (GLSOB) held recently in Flint, Michigan. The four first place trophy’s won by Syrian were the result of winning a) the Large Band Category, b) the Best Conductor, won by our Randall Proctor, c) the Best Dancer/ Genie won by our Steve Gavin, and d) the trophy for being the Overall Best Band at the Competition. In addition to the Stage Competition, members our Group participated in a Golf Outing, a Jam Session with the other Bands, and a Dinner Banquet with the Trophy presentations were made and also at the Banquet was where the Oriental Band Units presented our $ checks to the Ladder of Smiles which is the Oriental Bands path to giving $ to our Hospitals. Next year our Band will travel to Terre Haute. Indiana for the annual Competition held the first week in June. Hope to see you at this year’s Summer Parades! John Longsworth Oriental Band Scribe. Shrine Hospital Special Events Coordinator Hello Nobles and All, Thanks for all who has volunteered or visited our Hospital in the first half of 2016. Thanks to our Hospital leaders, from Cincinnati, Doug Sitzler and Dave Aaronson and Lexington Rob Smith and Cliff Fullman. What a great group of leaders. We continue to better aligned our nobles with the Shrine Hospital for our children. Just a reminder, my position will be to coordinate volunteers for Hospital special events where Shriners can be more involved as well as getting the word out to the community. We the Shrine has the best hospitals in the world and we all are an owner. So if you want to be on the volunteer list for upcoming needs, please call or email me. ( 859-445-6829 or [email protected]) The Hospital will be talking a presentation on the road soon to educate the tristate, or maybe just picking up a check, Selling CD at a concert, Fireman’s Awards etc. we need you to build a stronger relationship between the Shriner/Hospital and the community. Remember our #1 goal as Shriners is to help our Children and of course fun and great fellowship. Hospital notes: July and August were busy months at the hospital. What a great time, The Northern Kentucky Shrine Club all had working the Camp Ytiliba. The They handle the food at the Carnival. Also had a strong appearance from the Clowns and the Brothers Keepers, they drove their Motor cycles from as far as the Tennessee state line and back that evening in June. It was Heaven for all the support we had selling Bryan Adams CD’s for the Hospital and then enjoying a great concert! August Divan Days was stacked with good times and a lot of Shriners to help make the event a success. SHRINERS INTERNATIONAL - JOB WELL DONE Dear Illustrious Sir,Congratulations to you and the Nobility of Syrian Shriners for your overall membership improvement in 2015. In recognition of this achievement, your temple has earned the Silver Award. Your award certificate will be mailed to your temple. Your temple will also receive recognition at the 2016 Imperial Session during Imperial Sir Jeff Sowder’s Membership Report and the Shriners Membership Hall of Fame Luncheon. Again, my heartiest congratulations on a job well done and for all you do “For the Love of Children!” With best wishes and kindest regards, I remain Yours in the Faith,. Jerry G. GanttImperial Potenate MEMBERSHIP As Shriners, we all know that we are a part of a very special fraternity. This fraternity not only strengthens us as individuals, but our families as well. As Shriners, we have the unique opportunity to pass on our legacy of brotherly love, relief and truth to those closest to us. The Shriners’ Legacy Program allows us to do just that. All of your family members, sons, sons-in-law, brothers, uncles, grandfathers, and nephews, cousins, etc. are eligible to become a part of the Legacy program. What better way to honor someone that is special to you. You may even start a new family tradition. Here’s all you do. The Membership Development Office requires one member of your family’s legacy to register with Shriners Village (shrinersvillage.com). When registered, click on the “Membership” tab on the top of the page. From this page, select “Legacy Program” on the left side of the screen. As always, if you have questions or problems, just contact the Membership Development Office at [email protected] or call 813/281-0300. We know that there are several of you that have family members in the Shrine, so why not let us recognize that by being a part of the Legacy Program. The Membership Committee is planning several activities for the coming year. As February is Legacy Month, we would like to develop a Legacy Night in February to celebrate and recognize those of you that are continuing our Shriner heritage. In order to do this, you need to be a participant in the Legacy Program and just let us know that you are. We would really like to honor you in February. The Membership Committee is undertaking several worthwhile projects this year. We do need more Nobles to serve on this committee. Please consider serving Syrian Shrine in this capacity. ONE/THIRD OF THE TICKET SALES CAME FROM THE CIRCUS TICKET SALES OFFICE AT THE SYRIAN SHRINE CENTER. THIS AMOUNTED TO ABOUT $33000 IN TICKET SALES! What we have to realize is that most of these sales were purchased by the nobility or sold by the nobility and a lot of these same tickets were distributed or delivered to the customer by the nobility. We must also realize that most of these tickets were purchased before the advertising even hit the TV Screens or Aired on the Radio stations. This was not the case in prior years and less results were obvious. My point is the nobility stepped up sold tickets, sold group sales, and contributed to the Mom and Dad’s effort. It is the SHRINE CIRCUS and if we want it to continue the SYRIAN NOBILITY will have to continue to support it at least the same level it supported the 20l6 Circus or more. We thank all those who support the Syrian Shrine Circus year after year and do so much. We need you. We need the entire nobility supporting Circus 2017. The mom and dad’s mailings will go out again for Circus 2017 in August of 2016 asking each noble to purchase 4 ($l0.00 tickets) or donate $40.00. We must thank the circus 2017 circus committee for attending the meetings thus far. The activity books are in process, ads and banners are being sold. Tim Redrow has the circus tickets sales office up and running and selling tickets. He has a full staff to put in place as they are needed. Please take Circus 2017 seriously Purchase and sell ads in the activity book, Buy some one liners. Purchase activity books and peanuts when you attend the circus 2017. Please purchase your tickets in advance to guarantee the seats you want. We thank you all for turning the Syrian Shrine Circus around and with your help we look forward to taking it to the l00th year anniversary performance. On behalf of The Circus Committee 2017 I am asking the entire Divan, Trustees, and Nobility to support the 2017 Shrine Circus February 3,4, and 5, 2017 at the BBT Arena. throughout the remaining calendar year 2016. The performance dates have been pushed back we cannot wait until the last minute and expect the same results or more.
