2013 Annual Report - The Summit Foundation
2013 Annual Report Helping people make a difference in the lives of others. Partners for a Stronger Community Mission Statement The Summit Foundation strives to inspire donors, build partnerships and mobilize resources to support community organizations in Summit County(and the surrounding Communities) that foster Health & Human Service, Education, Art & Culture, Sports & Recreation and Environmental Stewardship. Dear Friends of The Summit Foundation, In 2008, The Summit Foundation’s leadership set a lofty goal: double the distributions made to our community through grants and scholarships in the next five years. We are beyond thrilled to note that we have met – and, in fact, exceeded – that goal. In 2008, we distributed $997,340 to nonprofit organizations and students in Summit, Lake, Park and Grand Counties. Thanks to your generosity, ongoing collaboration with our ski area partners and the benevolence of our donor advised funds, The Foundation awarded over $2 million in grants and scholarships to our mountain communities in 2013. All the staff and trustees are proud to live in a community that supports so many vital causes! In addition to our annual grant-making and scholarship awards, The Summit Foundation initiated and facilitated the following projects to distribute this level of support to the community: - A Youth Giving Council was developed, through which students at Summit High School have created a mini-grant program to support youth-related programs and activities. The ski areas allocated one additional transferable pass specifically to support this new effort. - Our second special initiative – a $50,000 grant each of the next three years – was approved to support the CATCH program, which is providing healthy after-school activities to elementary students. - Several donors partnered with us to support Keystone Science School as it formed its own 501(c)(3) organization and strengthened its future. For the second season, we sold out of all 300 Patron Pass Medallions generously provided by our ski areas, raising over $1 million from this program alone. As we look toward our 30th year, it is very rewarding to reflect on the $18.7 million The Foundation has now distributed throughout our mountain communities. You have been instrumental in that success. At The Summit Foundation, we appreciate every individual who has bought or sold a rubber duck, has responded to an appeal with a kind gift, or has designated The Summit Foundation in their estate plan. Our supporters become ambassadors by spreading the message about The Foundation with their friends and colleagues. It is because of you that we have been able to meet and exceed our goals. The project will include a new, expanded South Branch library for Breckenridge, a community center, a modernized Speakeasy Theater and offices for several nonprofit groups. Early on, it was realized that strong local community support would be necessary if this goal was to be achieved and therefore an approach was made to The Summit Foundation to elicit their advice and financial support. The Summit Foundation generously agreed to support the project and, as a result, The Library Foundation has been able to secure other substantial donations from a wide range of businesses, individuals and foundations within Summit County and the State of Colorado. In an effort to build the most effective grant-making process, the key questions the Board and staff asked include: • Can we develop measurements that identify what impact our grants are having in the community? • Can we provide an easy to use measurement tool that will allow both The Foundation and funded nonprofits to evaluate their impact in the community? • Are we “moving the needle” in making Summit County and our neighboring communities a better place? • What can The Foundation do to have a greater impact? After reviewing proposals from six consultants, The Summit Foundation has selected Mission Spark to assist with this initiative. Mission Spark is working with The Foundation to develop recommendations for outcome measurement indicators and a structure/process for implementing outcome measurements in the grant-making process of The Summit Foundation. The initial work on the initiative includes research into best practices in outcome measurements and return on investment indicators used by other grant-making organizations. An important part of the initiative will be the engagement and input 10 | summitfoundation.org from stakeholders by conducting at least six focus groups by funding category with grantees, donors, and community members, as well as The Foundation’s Board and staff to define possible measurable outcomes and develop goal statements for each funding category. Information gleaned from these focus groups will help to determine collective outcomes and common indicators by funding category. Mission Spark expects to complete a report and make recommendations to The Summit Foundation Board by June 2014. Lack of transportation, cost, program consistency/continuity and lack of awareness of programs that are available for students were identified as issues throughout the community. As a result, The Summit Foundation partnered with local organizations to develop a strategic plan and to create immediate solutions to these challenges to enable our local youth a safe place after school when so many of our community's parents are required to be working. Also in 2012, with a grant from the Colorado Health Foundation, the Family & Intercultural Resource Center, Keystone Science School, Summit County Youth & Family Services, and Summit School District worked together to launch a pilot after-school program in four of the six elementary schools in an effort to fulfill the immediate need for after-school activities in the community. Following the successful pilot of the after-school program, in July 2013, The Summit Foundation approved its second special initiative grant – a $50,000 contribution each of the next three years – to support the CATCH program at the four elementary schools and to add the same programming at Breckenridge Recreation Center. In doing so, The Summit Foundation joined Keystone Science School, Family & Intercultural Resource Center and Summit School District as the primary partners in the delivery of these after school activities for kids. The CATCH, which stands for Coordinated Approach to Child Health, after-school program is designed to promote healthy physical activity and eating behaviors in children. It aims to equip children with the knowledge and skills to make healthy decisions, all while having fun. Each day, a healthy snack is served and the children participate in a nutrition lesson followed by various exercises and non-elimination games. With funding from The Summit Foundation to have a Single Point of Contact for Kids (SPOCK), who can help coordinate and publicize out of school programming options for school-aged children, the program had a goal to provide CATCH programming to 130 kids at the five sites. In Fall 2013, 141 youth were enrolled in the afterschool activities. Additional partners for the 2013/14 program include Town of Breckenridge, Town of Frisco, Town of Silverthorne, Summit County Girl Scouts, Summit County Library, CSU Extension 4-H, Summit County Youth & Family Services, and Summit County Government. The Summit Foundation is excited to be a three year $150,000 partner in this programming to provide healthy after-school activities to the youth of Summit County. 13 | summitfoundation.org The Summit Foundation develops Youth Giving Council at Summit High School Comprised of students from the Summit High School Leadership class, the Youth Giving Council was started in the fall of 2012 and had been the long-time brainchild of The Summit Foundation Board of Trustee Gini Bradley. The group focuses on teaching youth about philanthropy while allowing them to participate in the grant process. The Summit Foundation’s Events & Marketing Coordinator Elisabeth Lawrence and Trustee Gini Bradley led the students through creating a funding priority, developing a grant application, determining a deadline for submission, and then sharing the opportunity with local nonprofits and student groups. Groups applied to the Council for minigrants (up to $1,500) that would have a significant impact on Summit County youth. The Council then reviewed the applications and determined their grant award amounts. Like The Summit Foundation’s application process, these opportunities were offered in Spring and Fall cycles. Sophomore Emily Carlson said, “I like that something we are doing now can make a lasting impact on the future of Summit County youth.” All the students agreed that it was a great opportunity to give back to the community and learn about many local nonprofits. The Summit Foundation has collaborated with Breckenridge Grand Vacations and The Summit Foundation’s ski area partners to provide support to the Youth Giving Council. Breckenridge Grand Vacations awarded a grant to The Summit Foundation to fund the Youth Giving Council. And at the start of the 2013/14 ski season, Vail Resorts, Copper Mountain Resort, and Arapahoe Basin Ski Area provided The Summit Foundation the opportunity to sell one additional patron pass with transferable ski privileges specifically to raise funds for the Youth Giving Council. The 2013 Youth Giving Council members included Valentina Blass, Emily Carlson, Morgan Courtney, Rachel Fitch, Joel Gomez, Natalie Gray, Meg Heil, Brett Huntley, Tom Kalina, Claire MacMurray, Cait McCluskie, Bailey Radek, and Billy Wilcox. 14 | summitfoundation.org YOUTH GIVING COUNCIL / $18,510 GRANTED After Prom Committee – scholarships for youth to attend event, headline entertainment for the evening Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center – Adaptive Ski program for Summit County youth Dillon Valley Elementary Folkloric Dance Group – costumes for the Folkloric Dance program Dillon Valley Elementary Math Olympiad – afterschool math enrichment program Dillon Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program – new dock Easter Seals Colorado – Camp Summit Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America – youth soccer and nutrition clinic Far View Horse Rescue – horse stock enclosure Girl Scout Troop 4061 – Soda Creek greenbelt bluebird enhancement High Country Conservation Center – Dillon Valley Elementary community garden, Summit CSA internship youth giving council Keystone Science School – Fourth Grade Astronomy program in Summit School District, scholarships for summer day camp Silverthorne Elementary School – cafeteria murals Snowy Peaks High School – welding equipment Summit Advocates for Gifted Education – DeMartini goal setting event Summit Cove Elementary – CrossFit for Kids afterschool program, scholarships for SOS program Summit High School ELA & Math Departments – Calculator lending lab Summit High School Special Education – Adaptive Ski program at BOEC Summit High School Tech Club – Solar Rollers competition Summit in Honduras – Spanish Honor Society volunteer trip Summit Middle School 6th Grade Language Arts – Leveled library for high-interest reading Swan Center Outreach – Leadership & Sustainability with Horses Upper Blue Elementary Art of Giving – afterschool art and culture club Upper Blue Elementary Family Literacy – children’s class while parents attend ESL class with Colorado Mountain College In 2013, the newly established Youth Giving Council, which involves high school students in the grant process and enables students to learn about philanthropy awarded $18,510 in mini-grants to nonprofits and student groups that support youth throughout Summit County. 15 | summitfoundation.org SCHOLARSHIPS / $215,780 AWARDED On April 1st, 91 members of the 2013 class at Summit High School were awarded $323,000 in scholarships. The contribution of transferable ski privileges has created a partnership between The Summit Foundation, Vail Resorts, Copper Mountain Resort and Arapahoe Basin, and illustrates the commitment each of the ski resorts provide to support vital and treasured services in our community. The partnership translates into participation by ski area representatives being part of the grant award process and giving back to the Summit County community. Anchored by the transferable skiing privileges, which are provided complimentary to The Foundation from the above resorts, the Patron Pass Program earned more than $1 million in funding for The Summit Foundation in 2013. This funding represented a significant portion of the $2.4 million awarded by The Foundation and its partners in 2013. As the 2013/2014 season began, the 300 passes allocated to The Summit Foundation were fully committed for the second year in the organization’s history. In December 2013, the ski areas allocated one additional medallion to The Summit Foundation specifically to raise funds for the Youth Giving Council’s mini-grant allocations. The Summit Foundation is extremely grateful to the ski areas for extending this additional pass and providing a specific purpose for its revenue. The Summit Foundation thanks the ski areas and all of our donors for your commitment to our community and the support received by The Summit Foundation through the Patron Pass Program. For more information on the Patron Pass Program and additional benefits offered by the program, contact The Summit Foundation’s Director of Development Kasey Geoghegan or visit summitfoundation.org. In 2013, contributions from 197 donors helped The Summit Foundation sell out of the 301 transferable ski privileges that were provided pro-bono by the ski areas through the Patron Pass Program, raising over $1 million to benefit our mountain communities. 24 | summitfoundation.org 2013 EMPLOYEE GIVING PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS January 1 – December 31, 2013 Victor Niewoehner Jennifer Oliver Neil The Peaks Society celebrates those who have made a commitment to The Summit Foundation to continue to support peaks society charitable causes after their lifetimes. A charitable bequest can be a specific dollar amount or a percentage of the value of your total estate, a gift of stock or life insurance or even real estate. Gifts of all shapes and sizes are welcome. The spirit behind every gift is the same. To learn more about planned giving and/or The Peaks Society, contact The Summit Foundation’s Director of Development Kasey Geoghegan. If you have made a charitable estate gift to The Summit Foundation, or are considering making a planned gift to recognize The Foundation, please consider informing The Summit Foundation so we may also recognize you as a member of The Peaks Society. Beyond preparing a gift to The Summit Foundation and informing us, members have no obligations. Thank you for considering The Summit Foundation in your legacy planning. 33 | summitfoundation.org DONOR ADVISED FUNDS donor advised funds Since 1999, The Summit Foundation has been honored by the establishment of more than 40 Donor Advised, Scholarship and Agency Endowment Funds. Establishing an advised fund allows donors to make a gift to The Summit Foundation and then remain actively involved in suggesting charitable causes to designate gifts. By creating a donor advised or scholarship fund, a donor receives many benefits similar to those of a private charitable foundation but without the costs, administrative responsibilities and government reporting requirements. In addition to donor advised funds, The Summit Foundation administers agency endowment funds and dedicated funds for various organizations. These funds provide the opportunity for named organizations to receive annual income from these “endowed” investments, while providing a nest egg for the organization into the future. Funds may be established within The Summit Foundation and are invested and managed in accordance with The Summit Foundation’s investment policies. Investment performance is reviewed quarterly and managed by financial experts and monitored by The Summit Foundation’s Finance and Investment Committee and the Board of Trustees. In 2013, the following funds were held within The Summit Foundation’s endowment fund: Scholarship Funds Jeanette Albert Scholarship Fund The Anschutz Foundation/NRC Broadcasting Scholarship Fund The Merriman Family Foundation Scholarship Fund The Brad Odekirk Scholarship Fund Terens Scholarship Fund Marla Starekow Fashion Design Scholarship Fund Donor Advised Funds – families The Brown Family Foundation Advised Fund The Howard and Sue Carver Health Care Fund The Dobbs Family Fund Finkel Family Advised Fund Follett Advised Fund The Keltner Family Fund The Jon Kirkpatrick Advised Fund The Lenzmeier/Williams Advised Fund The Louis Family Advised Fund The Millisor Family Fund The Oshlo Family Fund Ty, Trent, and Kyle Pennington Advised Fund The Podore Family Advised Fund The Douglas and Nancy Sims Family Advised Fund Swedish Family Advised Fund The Jack and Pat Thomas Arts Fund The Wurster Family Fund Agency Endowment Funds The Breckenridge Music Festival Administrative Fund The Breckenridge Music Festival Endowment Fund The Breckenridge Music Festival Louise Henderson Chair Fund The Continental Divide Land Trust Endowment Fund The St. Anthony Summit Medical Center Fund Donor Advised Funds – businesses/organizations The Aspen Leaf Foundation Breckenridge Grand Vacations Advised Fund The Breckenridge and Keystone Ski Resort Advised Fund The Highlands at Breckenridge Advised Fund PeakOne Surgery Center Advised Fund The Brian G. For many years, The Summit Foundation’s events have served as the entry point for involvement with The Foundation. The Foundation’s primary events in 2013 were a Kentucky Derby Party, Annual Golf Tournament, Great Rubber Duck Race, and Parade of Homes. Kentucky Derby Party Nearly 200 people supported The Summit Foundation at Blue River Bistro in Breckenridge at its 5th Annual Kentucky Derby Party. The event featured a VIP party with a scrumptious Southern buffet and unlimited mint juleps. Attendees wore their best Derby attire (hats included!) and came to cheer on the horses. Annual Golf Tournament The Summit Foundation hosted its 26th annual Grand Lodge on Peak 7 Golf Tournament in early June. Saturday evening began with a Welcome Party dinner and Calcutta auction hosted by Vail Resorts Echo. Skyy Vodka provided spirits to enjoy the evening while Boston comedian, Jimmy Dunn, provided plenty of entertainment and emceed the lively auction. Breckenridge Mayor John Warner hosted a breakfast on Sunday morning prior to the shotgun start. After a beautiful and warm day of tournament play at the Breckenridge Golf Club, the team of David Suchomski, Doug Suchomski, Josh Knipp, and Sean Meachum won with an outstanding score of 55. Players enjoyed a delicious on-course BBQ provided by John Daisy of Fatty’s Pizzeria and the Breckenridge Restaurant Association. At the Interval International awards reception, the top five teams were honored with prizes; along with individual prizes for the longest drive, closest to the pin, most accurate drive and longest putt. The annual tournament raised a record setting $71,000 for The Summit Foundation’s grants and scholarship program. The Foundation is thankful to all the players for their continued support of this long-standing tournament as well as title sponsor Grand Lodge on Peak 7. The Town of Breckenridge and the Breckenridge Golf Club were generous hosts. 36 | summitfoundation.org Great Rubber Duck Race On Saturday, August 31st, nearly 9,000 rubber ducks raced down a roaring Blue River for The Summit Foundation’s 26th Annual Great Rubber Duck Race, which raised $80,000 for The Summit Foundation. The Hudson Auto Source Kids Duck Dash started the day’s races with 774 ducks raining down into the Blue River with the help of Red, White, & Blue Fire Department and their impressive ladder truck. Age-appropriate prizes donated by Peak-A-Boo-Toys, Vail Resorts Echo, and Frisco Adventure Park were awarded to the top 50 ducks. Donated by Vail Resorts Echo, the grand prize Kid’s Epic Season Ski Pass was won by Kaila Pisinski. A record setting 228 ducks participated in the FirstBank Business Battle Duck Race. Local business French Kiss had the swiftest duck, and their staff and clients won a backcountry ski trip for 12 at Ski Cooper, donated by FirstBank. Over 65 businesses also participated in a duck decorating contest in which the ducks were displayed in the FirstBank lobby for the week leading up to the race. Creatively decorated ducks from Vail-Summit Orthopaedics and Breckenridge Music Festival tied for first place, after a rigorous decision by an expert panel of duck judges. An honorable mention was presented to Innovative Energy for their solar duck. At 3 p.m., excitement grew as participants watched 7,962 ducks race swiftly down the Blue River in hopes of securing one of 62 prizes in the Grand Lodge on Peak 7 Great Rubber Duck Race. Due to the extremely rainy weather in the month preceding the duck races, this year’s duck race was the fastest in race history, with ducks entering the Hyder Construction finish line in just 12 minutes. Shawn Krause was the grand prize winner of a week-long vacation at the destination of his choice, which was donated by Grand Lodge on Peak 7. The Summit Foundation is indebted to the 2013 sponsors and major prize donors: Grand Lodge on Peak 7, FirstBank of Summit County, Hudson Auto Source, Town of Breckenridge, Peak-A-Boo Toys, Climax Molybdenum Company, PeakOne Surgery Center, Vail Resorts Echo, Vail-Summit Orthopaedics, Unity Snowboards, Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, Hyder Construction, Copper Mountain Resort, Breckenridge Distillery, Beaver Run Resort & Conference Center and Ready, Paint, Fire. Summit Count Parade of Homes The 19th Annual Parade of Homes in Summit County was held the last two weekends of September. Summit County Builders Association hosts this 2013 19th Annual premier home tour to showcase the latest in building design and trends. ARADE OF OMES Throughout the two weekends, The Summit Foundation staffed featured homes to earn the proceeds from the $15 admission. Aspen Grove Kitchen & Bath sponsored the entry lanyards. In addition to staffing a Trilogy Partners home, employees of Bank of the West sold tickets in their Summit County branches and Bank of the West donated to The Summit Foundation an additional $2 on each entry sold at their branches. P H The Summit Foundation is appreciative of the Summit County Builders Association for this wonderful event and is thankful to be recognized as the event’s annual beneficiary. Over $27,000 was earned by The Summit Foundation from the 2013 tour of 11 homes. 37 | summitfoundation.org event donors EVENT DONORS January 1 – December 31, 2013 Key Event Sponsors and Benefit Hosts AirBound Affinity Wealth Management Group Aspen Grove Kitchen & Bath Bank of the West Blue River Bistro Breckenridge Golf Club Breckenridge Grand Vacations Breckenridge Restaurant Association Campari USA City Market Climax Molybdenum Colorado Tents and Events Fatty’s Pizzeria First Bank of Summit County Grand Lodge on Peak 7 Higgles Ice Cream Hogan Lovells US LLP Hudson Auto Source Hyder Construction Maverick Sports Promotions Interval International PeakOne Surgery Center Peak-A-Boo Toys Republic National Distributing Company Southern Wine and Spirits Summit County Builder’s Association Town of Breckenridge Vail Resorts Echo Vail-Summit Orthopaedics Wedgewood Lodge Wells Fargo Bank Golf Tournament Teams 2V's Landscaping & Irrigation Allman Drywall Assurance Avalanche Physical Therapy BCG & Company Briar Rose Chophouse & Saloon Burke & Riley’s Coldwell Banker Rounds & Porter Realty Colorado Premier Realty Commercial Design Engineering, Ltd. Many charitable giving options are noted here. These gifts can be made through specific programs like those noted below. More details on each of these opportunities can be found by visiting summitfoundation.org ANNUAL GIFTS annual gifts Outright Gifts Cash, check, credit card, and stock contributions are the most common ways to give. These donations, which offer maximum tax advantages, are accepted throughout the year and may be designated to the annual operating fund or The Foundation’s Endowment Fund. Patron Pass Program Fully transferable ski privileges generously provided by Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, Breckenridge Ski Resort, Copper Mountain Resort, Keystone Resort, Vail Mountain and Beaver Creek Resort is at the heart of this program. Complimentary golf and Nordic skiing, as well as discounts throughout the county for lodging, dining, services and activities are also offered through the program. Employee Giving Program More than 25 businesses partner with The Summit Foundation to encourage their employees to pledge a payroll deduction to benefit The Foundation. In many cases, the company matches the gifts designated by individual employees. The Foundation welcomes additional partnerships with employers throughout the community. Special Events & Projects The Foundation raises monies through a variety of special events and projects each year. Become involved by sponsoring, volunteering, donating products or services, or by simply attending one of these events. These include an annual golf tournament in June and the great rubber duck race the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. The Summit Foundation is also recognized as the beneficiary of Blue River Bistro’s Kentucky Derby party, the Breck Crest Mountain Marathon and Summit County Builders Association’s Parade of Homes. Annually, The Summit Foundation hosts a grant and scholarship reception in June and a celebration of Philanthropy Awards in November. 40 | summitfoundation.org PLANNED GIFTS Do you dream about doing more for your loved ones AND for the causes you care most about? Making a planned gift to The Foundation can provide significant tax benefits, while also permanently linking your long-standing support to The Summit Foundation. Following are a variety of tools for giving that will make a lasting difference. Donor Advised Funds Establishing an advised fund allows you to make a gift to The Summit Foundation and then remain actively involved in suggesting charitable causes to designate gifts, targeting the issues you care about most. Types of advised funds include memorial funds, scholarship funds, agency endowment funds, and field of interest funds. Bequests Naming The Foundation as the beneficiary in your will, trust or qualified retirement plan can be the simplest gift. Because these assets often carry a heavy income tax obligation to your heirs, they can be a particularly attractive source for funding your charitable gifts. Charitable Lead Trust planned gifts You can name The Foundation as beneficiary of income from a trust for a specific number of years. Your estate taxes are reduced and the property is not taxed to your children. When your children or grandchildren reach maturity, the Trust terminates and they receive the assets. The community benefits during all of those years and your loved ones receive much more than they would otherwise. Gift Annuity You can create a gift annuity by making a gift of cash, property, or appreciated stock. In return, The Foundation pays you a guaranteed annual income for life. You receive significant tax advantages, including an immediate tax deduction for your gift. In addition, a portion of each income payment you receive is tax-free. After your death, the remainder of your annuity is used to create a charitable endowment fund in your name. Charitable Remainder Trust Similar to a gift annuity, a charitable remainder trust will pay you a guaranteed annual income for life. The Trust is established by you and is held by you until your death, at which time the remainder of the estate is donated to The Foundation. Gifts of Real Estate Real estate and other property can be donated to The Foundation, allowing a donor to establish a charitable gift annuity if requested and/or receive maximum tax benefits. All gifts are professionally managed and pooled for diversified investment and economies of scale and to increase their charitable impact. Investment performance is reviewed quarterly by financial experts and monitored by the Finance Committee and The Foundation’s Board of Trustees. 41 | summitfoundation.org 2013 VOLUNTEERS January 1 – December 31, 2013 The Summit Foundation is honored to have the support and generosity of hundreds of individuals assisting us with our 2013 events and activities.
