Navy League of the United States St. Augustine - Palm Coast Council http://www.sapcnavyleague.org BOSUN’S LOCKER 4Q2014 Volume 2014 Number 4 Editor: Lee Figliuolo, [email protected], (386) 447-3640 FROM THE BRIDGE: Looking back on 2014 I am gratified to see that our council has continued an active schedule with a focus on serving our men and women in the Sea Services, plus speaking out on their behalf, and enjoying time with each other. Some of the more notable council activities and achievements of the past year are as follows: We changed our name from St. Augustine Council to St. Augustine-Palm Coast Council in order to better reflect the scope of our active membership and to attract more individual and community affiliate members. Thanks to Lee Figliuolo and his team our golf tournament was a big success again at the Grand Haven Golf Club, with a record number of participants from our adopted military commands. We also held some very enjoyable special events including our spring mixer, Independence Day celebration with “Ben Franklin” attending, Council meetings and award ceremonies at the Flagler College Solarium, the 40th Anniversary Celebration at the World Golf Village, Kings Bay Sub Tour, and the Christmas Dinner at Marsh Creek Country Club. Thanks to Kim Kendall for starting up our Speakers Bureau, and also to Bill Dudley, Bill Korach, and Claude Caviness for giving presentations on the Navy League to four different local community groups this last quarter. Most important, we continued to honor Sailors of the Quarter and Sailors of the year at our adopted military commands in 2014, with 21 ceremonies where we presented 71 awards. We have also had a great year of partnership participating in special events with our adopted commands including several change of command ceremonies, the IA Lunch, the Battle of Midway Dinner, USS FARRAGUT Family Day Cruise, Coast Guard Family Day, Blue Angels Show, HITRON Boat Wash and Chile Cook-off, HITRON gun range tour, plus attendance at several Christmas Holiday dinners. There’s more but I wanted to remind all members that our council is an ACTIVE COUNCIL and we want members to become INVOLVED. That’s my challenge to all members going forward. Be an active member by attending our meetings and events and by bringing in new members who want to be involved also. This last year new Officers appointed were Bob Price as Treasurer, Ian Pollitt as VP Military Affairs, and Kim Kendall as VP Public Affairs. My thanks to all these new officers for their willingness to serve and the great job they have done. Next year Cecil Bateman will take over as VP Membership and Bill Dudley will succeed me as President. I have been very proud to serve as Council President and I am confident the St. Augustine-Palm Coast Navy League Council is in good hands with very capable leadership going into 2015. So please join me on January 12, 2015 for our council meeting at the Flagler College Solarium for the swearing in of new Officers and Directors. God Bless America Mike Zollar President - St. Augustine - Palm Coast Council EDITORS NOTE: We all owe Mike Zollar a debt of gratitude, as he willingly accepted back-to-back terms as President of our council and worked tirelessly to make our council one of the best. We were awarded “Outstanding Council” in 2013 and will soon be making our submittal for our 2014 evaluation. In reviewing our 2014 Bosuns Locker newsletters, it appears we did more this year than last. If you look at Mike’s picture at the top of the page and compare it to the one to the right, taken only two weeks ago, you can see we’ve worn him down. He now needs filtered glasses to block out bright light and he’s sporting sound deadening earmuffs. It also appears that he suffered a blow right between the eyes. However, he is still smiling. Hang in there Mike, 2015 should be easier. 1 ST. AUGUSTINE - PALM COAST COUNCIL BIRTHDAY PARTY: On September 24, 2014 the council celebrated its 40th Anniversary. This has been a particularly significant year for our Navy League Council; we celebrated our 40th anniversary; we underwent a name change from St. Augustine Council to St. Augustine – Palm Coast Council, because of the increased support from the Palm Coast area; and were acknowledged as an “Outstanding Council’ by the National Navy League Organization. The 120 golfer field for this year’s golf tournament was one of the largest in the recent past. Through generous donations, we were able to host 36 active duty Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen in the tournament which had two flights, the Blue and the Gold. The Blue flight was won by a Coast Guard foursome from the HITRON (Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron) drug interdiction squadron stationed at Cecil Field, Jacksonville. The team was made up of the following individuals pictured on the right: AET3 William Devault, AET1 Justin Miller, AET3 Adam Myers & AMT3 Chris Yarrison Second place in the Blue flight was also taken by a team from HITRON and third place by a three man team led by retired Navy Vice Admiral, Jim Amerault. HITRON Blue Flight Winners All three places in the Gold flight were won by civilians, who all probably wish they could hit a ball as far as those younger men in uniform. The gold flight winners, all Grand Haven residents and members, were: Chuck Culver, Pete Bianchi, Tom Driscoll & Mike O’Brien There were also contests for Long Drive and closest to the pin for both men and women: The winners were: LONG DRIVE: Men – Dan Dinsmore (HITRON), Women – Louise Wolfe Culver, Bianchi, Driscoll, O’Brien - Gold Flight Winners CLOSEST TO PIN: Men - Mike Zollar Women – Kay Boyer Ryan Other notables included a team of former NFL members; Tom Sweeney Ike Harris Pete Banaszak Dave Cloutier - Mike Zollar Philadelphia Eagles New Orleans Saints Oakland Raiders Boston Patriots Sweeney, Harris, Banaszak & Cloutier - Team NFL By all measures the tournament was a huge success in that it raised close to $10,000 for the council and awarded prizes to 1st , 2nd & 3rd place in each flight, Men’s & Ladies Long Drive and Closest to the pin and over 50 raffle prizes of golf foursomes & golf equipment. For the 4th year in a row, the Hyundai Equus – Ultimate ($69,000) went unclaimed on hole 17. Lee Figliuolo - Golf Tournament Chairman USCGC VALIANT - SOQ: On November 25, USCGC Valiant Liaison, Ron Powell along with the Valiant C.O., Adam Chamie, presented the Sailor of the Quarter award for the 3rd quarter of 2014 to BM3 Bryan Martin. BM3 Bryan Martin & Ron Powell 4 BM3 Bryan Martin & CDR Chamie USCG HITRON - BOAT WASH & CHILI COOK-OFF: The day before Thankgiving (26 Nov) seems like a strange day for a “Chili Cook-off” but US Coast Guard flying units have a tradition that the unit’s leadership does a “mock” cleaning of a unit aircraft before the Chiefs of the unit hold a Chili Cook-off contest, where the entire unit enjoys a sampling of 15 different Chili entrants as well as other picnic type delights. The cleaning of the aircraft extends to also cleaning a “fast” boat since HITRON has both helicopters and boats. “Cleaning” becomes a clowning around event in weird outfits led by Commanding Officer, Capt. Kevin Gavin and other key members of the unit’s leadership. As members of the unit stand around cheering and jeering their leadership, the washers return the favor by spraying water from hoses on the spectators! All in all it’s a fun time watching the leadership attempt to appear to be enjoying themselves while shivering in the 45 degree temperature at Cecil Field while dressed in clown outfits, scuba gear and fire fighting equipment! The critical aspect of this tradition is the Chili Cook-Off contest which raises money for a charitable cause picked by the Chiefs of HITRON. Capt Gavin, CMC Kalita and other leaders judged the contest amongst much fanfare and cheering from the over 150 members of HITRON in attendance. Winners of the cook-off were: Prize – 48 hr Liberty Pass AMT1 Travis Franco, 1st Place AMT2 Bill Wilbur, 2nd Place Prize – 24 hr Liberty Pass Prize – 1 week of using the Commander’s parking spot! AMT2 Michael Best, 3rd Place CWO Rick Haase – Best overall Taste, Prize – 1 year of bragging rights. Fun was had by all and the experience expanded our stomach’s capacity for the following day Turkey Feast! Capt Gavin dismissed the formation and the men and women of HITRON got the afternoon off, a perfect ending to a fun day. Many thanks for inviting members of the Navy League to this great event. Capt. Kevin Gavin Paul Kimmel - USCG HITRON Liaison USCG HITRON - GUN EXERCISE: On 17 Dec 2014, 11 St Augustine-Palm Coast Navy League members and guests were treated to a Gun Exercise (Gunnex) at the Cecil Field firing range. Members of the HITRON flying unit’s weapons officers and flying “snipers”, conducted unit training on side arms then had Navy League members compare their talents on the firing range! Extensive safety and instructional briefings were conducted with great professionalism as well as a smattering of jokes and fun ‘give and take’ between members with different military backgrounds including Coast Guard, Marine, Army and Air Force personnel. Zeroing in the 50 caliber Sniper Rifle Instructors explained in great detail how and why unit weapons are used for mission and post mission operations. The highlight of the shooting range experience was witnessing one of the unit sniper’s zeroing in his rifle with his spotter. The weapon was fired several hundred yards and fine tuned to meet very strict standards. It was interesting to note that HITRON conducts it’s own sniper qualification and in unit certifications. Each of the navy league personnel got to fire the sniper rifle (from 30 yards or so!) with some success. Only our esteemed president, Mike Zollar, proceeded to give himself a ‘bump on the noggin’ (see picture at bottom of page 1) by allowing the recoil on the rifle’s scope to bash Chief David Mayhew, Chief Rob Jerger, into his forehead! He was awarded a mock purple heart for his GM1 Angel Rios, GM2 Michael Lynch, AMT1 Brian McCaffrey, Capt. Kevin Gavin bravery during the training exercise! Capt Gavin, HITRON’S CO, graciously conducted a unit briefing and tour of unit aircraft after the Gunnex. We all went to lunch after the full morning at HITRON at a local Bar-B-Que and enjoyed the exaggerations of old war stories by our members. Many thanks to Captain Gavin and Command Master Chief Kalita for arranging this informative and fun event. The professionalism of all involved was very much appreciated and our deep water sailors walked away with a new appreciation for what HITRON flyers do! Paul Kimmel - USCG HITRON Liaison Pay Attention 5 U.S. NAVY BIRTHDAY: The St. Augustine-Palm Coast Navy League (SAPCNL) was represented well at the United States Navy’s 239th Birthday reception held on October 13th at Flagler College’s stunning Solarium. The newly formed Flagler College US Military Veterans SIG (Special Interest Group) hosted the event. The students’ club is focused on raising awareness to the importance of our Veterans and their sacrifices. The Club’s officers - President Donn Garby, Vice-President Victoria Suri-Beltran, Secretary Logan Brennan, Historian Christopher Rhodes – as well as Veterans, students, faculty, and staff attended this inaugural event. The event’s organizer, Christopher Rhodes, commented on why he was so passionate on making this ceremony a reality, “I wanted to put on the US Navy's birthday event to commemorate the Navy's 239th birthday. I was in NJROTC at Ridgewood High School for four years and graduated as the executive officer of my company. The Navy has definitely become a huge part of my life because of it, and I thought that this would be a nice way to stick with my roots, so to speak.” SAPCNL Representative, Claude Caviness, made a presentation about the current role of our Sea Services and how students and community members can help to support the challenges our military men and women face each day. The official ringing of the bell nine times and the cutting of the cake by two military Veterans Chris Chaya and Claude Caviness rounded out the event. Chris Chaya & Claude Caviness Kim Kendall - VP Public Affairs YOUTH ACTIVITIES JROTC Units Allen D. Nease Naval JROTC hosted their McFarland Interservice Drill Meet on Nov. 8. Participants were from 14 schools throughout Northern Fl and Southern Georgia. They competed in eleven events for trophies for the first 5 winners in each category. Our council presented the five trophies for the winners of the Armed Basic Drill. First place was Middleburg NJROTC (pictured right). Approximately 30 judges volunteering for the all day events were Marines from NAS JAX, recruiters from all four military branches, sailors from NS Mayport, and Nease NJROTC staff. The next drill meet hosted by Nease NJROTC is on Jan. 17, 2015. Matanzas Army JROTC hosted a Veterans Appreciation day at their high school gym on Nov. 7. A very entertaining event with their steel band and choir performing for the veterans attending. The Winner Color Guards from all 4 schools we sponsor performed all over St. Johns and Falgler Counties during the Veterans Day week. ST. AUGUSTINE NAVAL SEA CADET BATTALION The battalion cadets constructed a 13 position Navigation/Orienting course at the Florida Agricultural Museum in Flagler County on Oct. 11. Materials were donated by Home Depot. The all day layout / construction course will be utilized by the Boy Scouts and JROTC units in the surrounding counties. The cadets also volunteered to park cars at the St. Johns County Cattleman's Association Cracker Days event in Elkton on Oct.1. In appreciation they donated $300. to the battalion and want us back again next year. The battalion sponsored an information booth alongside the SA-PC NL booth on Nov. 9 at the Veterans Appreciation Day event in Palm Coast. Veterans organizations from all over Flagler County Constructing the course took part. Cadet Oscar Aline and Ensign Bill Hamm manned the Sea Cadet booth with Dave Sullivan handling the SAPC booth. This first time event will be open again in 2015. Bill Hamm - VP Youth Programs COUNCIL CELEBRITY: The St. Augustine - Palm Coast council has a celebrity member who is very generous with his time and good-name. Appearing at a Purple Heart ceremony for an Afghanistan corpsman, is Pete Banaszak, 13-yr running back for the Oakland Raiders. Pete attends many of our events and brings his Super Bowl XI winner's ring to the ceremonies, much to the photo-delight of the troops. Pete plays in our annual golf tournament and this past year he was on a team of four former NFL players. That’s Pete on the left in the picture where he signed right across Claudes face. 6 SUBMARINE BASE TOUR - KINGS BAY GA: On November 13, our council sponsored a tour of the Kings Bay GA submarine base. Over 50 members and guests traveled to the base on a luxury tour bus. The bus picked attendees in Palm Coast and then St. Augustine before heading north to Georgia. Originally we planned to tour the school, have lunch in the mess and then tour one of the two ballistic subs in port. Because nuclear weapons were being moved on the lower base when we arrived we were only able to take a driving tour around the upper base, visit the gift shop, have lunch in the mess and then tour the USS Wyoming (SSBN 742). We normally like to visit the school before stepping aboard one of the boats, because it gives you a basic understanding of the things you will see when aboard. Though we didn’t get the school tour everyone appeared to appreciate and enjoy the trip. USS Wyoming (SSBN 742) returns to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in Georgia following routine operations in June 2014. Lee Figliuolo - VP Communications COUNCIL CHRISTMAS PARTY: The council held its annual Christmas party at the clubhouse of the Marsh Creek Country Club in St. Augustine on Thursday, December 11th. We invited the senior enlisted persons from each of our sponsored units to the party and honored as our special guest 1st Sgt. Devlin Root from the Blount Island Command. Devlin previously served tours on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq as is considered an outstanding Marine by his leadership. Additional highlights of the evening was the entrance of Medal of Honor recipient Duane Dewey who was awarded Quarterdeck honors with eight dings of a ships bell as he passed members of the Marine Corps League, resplendent in their red blazers, acting as side buoys. President Mike Zollar presented council member Gary Cohn a framed certificate of Appreciation for his outstanding efforts as council photographer and presented Lee Figliuolo with a “Lone Sailor” award for outstanding service to the council. Unfortunately our singing angel, Faith Miller was ill and could not attend, but her replacement, Amy Alysia, stirred us all with rousing renditions of the National Anthem and God Bless America.
