Annual General Meeting
April 13th is our Annual General Meeting;
a meeting not to be missed! The new
executive will be formed.
Once again, we will have a painting
exchange where you can augment your
personal art collection for a mere $10.
Simply bring your own painting, matted and
wrapped in a clear envelope, along with the
cash! The highlight of this meeting is the
p re s e n t a t i o n o f a w a rd s a n d sp e c i a l
memberships. We have wonderful volunteers
who will be recognized. Signature
memberships, along with Bronze, Silver and
Gold memberships will be awarded. A big
thank you goes to Carolyne Pascoe for
ensuring that these volunteers and dedicated
TWS members are acknowledged.
Many thanks to Shoshana Rubens who has
organized a fabulous series of workshops
this year. On April 16, Barry Coombs will be
providing a creative day at the Herbert
Carnegie Arena.
May is a very busy month! Our Spring
Aquavision show will be hung on May 5,
2011 at the J.D. Carrier Gallery. Whether
you are in the show or not, please support
the group and attend the opening on May
11. Check the blue pocket calendar and our
website for more details. We will appreciate
many helping hands for the set up of this
show.
While we are proud of the many members
who are involved in shows and workshops, it
is worth mentioning an exceptional
opportunity. Too often, Canadian artists are
not recognized south of the border. Not so
this year! Margaret Roseman has been
asked to be a presenter at a Watermedia

Weekend at the Burchfield Penney Art

can go (May 13 - 15), this is an amazing
opportunity to meet and work with a select
group of artists.
As an extended part of our 25th Anniversary
celebrations, we welcome renowned artist,
Stephen Quiller. www.quillergallery.com.
Watermedia and acrylics are the focus for
the two workshops held at the Toronto
Botanical Gardens. Thanks to Jenny Reid,
we have been able to secure the Burgundy
Room for a special meeting on
Wednesday May 18th. Stephen Quiller will
be demonstrating, so come early as that
meeting will assuredly fill up quickly.
In June, Terri Flaser has asked Brigitte
Schreyer to be our guest demonstrator.

By June, we should be enjoying warm and
sunny weather. Mary Sadeghi has offered
to have the first paint-out of the summer at
her home and garden. This is an
u n p a r a l l e l e d o p p o r t u n i t y t o e n j o y,
photograph and paint a unique and varied
collection of flowers. Watch for dates and
more information so that you can join us for
a colourful and art-filled day.
Finally, I would like to express my thanks to
all of the hard-working volunteers who
ensure that our art society continues to
thrive. We depend completely on their
willingness to give their time and energy.
Twenty-Sixth
Annual General Meeting
On Wed. April 13th, the TWS will hold its 26th
Annual General Meeting. At this meeting,
S i g n a t u r e M e m b e r s h i p s , L i f e Ti m e
Memberships, and our new Bronze, Silver
and Gold Distinction Levels of Signature
Memberships will be awarded. In addition,
twenty new 25-year members will receive
their certificates and pins. Quite a milestone.
We will honour our new 2011 Volunteer of
the Year Award as well as award any
Volunteer Executive Achievement Awards.
The meeting will also honour our outgoing
executive and introduce you to the new
executive for next year. AGM reports from
executive members will also be ready for all
members to enjoy.
After the new slate of officers on the
executive is presented, we will feature an
open forum, where members will have their
say with respect to past, present and future
issues with TWS.
During the break, there will be a variety of
refreshments available, and members will
have the time to view the 25 year members’
show in the outside foyer gallery.
We rely on their initiative and perseverance.
Writing these words, I think of people like
Martine Simard, Garry Herridge, Jake
Mol, Angela Lombardi and Ron Vickers, a
few of those who work behind the scenes to
solve the many little problems that crop up
unannounced. Without these people our
society would come to a screeching halt!

We will also hold our second annual painting
exchange draw. Members are asked to bring
a matted painting and $10 to participate in
the exchange. It is a great way to acquire art
from your fellow TWS members while
contributing in a small way to the club.
Paintings should be no larger than a quarter
sheet (11”x15”) matted to 16”x20” and no
smaller than a 5” x 7” image matted.
At the end of the meeting there will once
again be 15-20 draws for free art prizes.
Definitely a meeting not to miss!!

Valerie Russell
Secretary TWS
Valerie was born in England and now
resides in Scarborough, Ontario. She is
basically self-taught, and paints in a
representational style. Her favourite subjects
are land/seascapes and wildlife created on
location and painted in either oil or
watercolour in her home studio.
Valerie’s watercolour painting titled “Gilbert’s
Cove, NS” was accepted in the 2004
Canadian Society of Painters in the
Watercolour juried show “Open Water”.
Affiliations include E. Central Ont. Art
Assoc.; Cedar Ridge Creative Centre; Pine
Ridge Arts Council & Toronto W/C Society.
She is a Member Emeritus of the
Scarborough Arts Council and Member &
Past President of the Art Guild of
Scarborough.
Valerie’s artworks have been juried and
accepted by her peers (including Doris
McCarthy). Her works are held in collections
across Canada (including the permanent
collection of the Vancouver Maritime
Museum, BC); USA; South Africa; Taiwan;
U.K. and most recently in the permanent
collection of the town of Spoleto, Italy.

Vodka Painters of Canada
Bi-Annual Show
From Feb 1–25 th , a number of TWS
members who are also members of the
Vodka Painters of Canada displayed
approximately 100 miniature paintings at the
Etobicoke Civic Centre Gallery.
The paintings, which were all 5x7 images,
depicted all genres of painting subjects.
Many were painted on location even in the
winter (with a little vodka added to the
water-thus the group’s name).
Participating TWS members were Elisabeth
Gibson, Pauline Holancin, Jake Mol, and
Carolyne Pascoe. The group also includes
former TWS members Bill Vincent, Thelma
Likuski, Fred Collins in addition to Peter Van
Gils, Elizabeth Jaworski, Don Staples and
Frank Webb AWS.

is on the Road Again.
From April 8 - 11, 2011 we are taking off for the art galleries, the Freedom Trail and the seafood of
Boston Mass. Great things are planned and the bus is almost full. We plan to pack every minute

Sylvia Flamer

surprised
to
hear
of
the
death
of
Sylvia
Flamer
on
January
17th,
after
several
years
of
fighting
off
cancer.
Sylvia was
a
TWS
member
since
1993
who
volunteered
on
the
membership
committee
and
social
committee.
She
was
invaluable
to
Ollie
at
the
membership
table
to
sign
in
our
members each
meeting.
Her
indomitable
spirit
meant
that
Sylvia
carried
on
her
activities
both
at
TWS
and
the
Don
Valley
Art
Club
up
until
the
end
with
her
usual
cheerfulness
so
that
most
of
us
did
not
even
realize
that
she
was
ill.
She
had
made
plans
to
go
on
the
TWS
bus
trip
to
Boston
as
she
had
gone
on
many
trips
in
the
past
with
Elisabeth
Gibson
and
fellow
TWS
members.
Sylvia
was
a
Signature
member
of
TWS
who
painted
wonderful
landscapes
in
both
watercolour
and
oil.
In
addition,
she
served
as
President
of
the
Don
Valley
Art
Club
as
well
as
numerous
positions
with
that
organization.
She
also
Blain Berdan
We
were
also
sad
to
hear
of
the
passing
of
Blain
Berdan
at
75
years
of
age
on
Thursday
February
10,
2011.
Blain
who
had
suffered
from
type
1
Diabetes
for
70
years,
was
an
TWS
member
for
the
past
11
years.
Although
he
was
well
at
the
TWS
meeting
in
January
and
talked
to
a
number
of
us,
his
health
failed
about
a
week
following
his
75th
birthday
and
he
succumbed
to
heart
disease.
As
a
volunteer
member,
he
and
his partner,
Lloyd
Dean,
regularly
helped
the
show
committee
with
the
set‐up
and
dismantling
on
jury
days,
hanging
shows
and
participating
in
a number
of
Pauline
Holancin`s
skits
at
our
December
party
meetings.
He
was
a
talented
painter
of
land
and
cityscapes in
watercolour,
oil
acrylic
as
well
as
with
3
dimensional
florals.
He
earned
a
Signature
member
of
TWS,
having
been
juried
into
14
shows.
was
an
award
winning
gardener,
a
mother
and
a
caregiver
to
her
second
husband
Arthur
who
was
for
many
years in
an
incapacitated
state
before
his
death.
A
number
of
TWS
members attended
a
memorial
reception
on
January
21
at
the
Mount
Pleasant
Cemetery
Visitation
Centre.
A
card
and
a
donation
to
the
Odette
Cancer
Centre
of
Sunnybrook
Hospital
have
been
made
in
her
memory.
A
kind
and
generous
man,
he
was
a
musician
and
played
the
organ,
piano
and
harp.
As
an
actor,
dancer
singer
and
set
designer‐painter,
he
was featured
in
many
community
theatre
musicals.
An
avid
gardner,
he
created
a lavish
garden
filled
with
exotic
blooms
and
greenery
on
a
small
apartment
balcony.
This
was
often
photographed
in
the
local
newspapers.
He
will
be
missed
by
all
who
knew
him
and
by
his
long
time
friend
and
companion
Lloyd
Dean.
A
sympathy
card
has
been
sent
by
TWS.
A
memorial
service
will
be
held
on
Saturday,
May
7th,
from
12:00
noon
until
3:00
pm
at
the
North
Toronto
Memorial
Community
Centre,

West.
The
venue
will
be
familiar
to
many

our
members
as the
site
of
several
of
our
shows
in
years
past.

Workshops
Barry Coombs is a visual artist, art instructor
and workshop leader. He has exhibited his
paintings, drawings, and sculptures in
Canada, Taiwan, China and South Korea. In
2010, Barry was one of the artists
representing Canada in the G20 World Artist
Festival in Seoul, Korea. His teaching
focuses on watercolouring painting and pen
and ink drawing. Individual attention and
critiques are important elements of his
approach to teaching. Barry has led dozens
of outdoor painting and sketching holidays in
Canada, Europe and Mexico. He will be
leading a workshop in Italy this year.
For the TWS workshop Barry will
demonstrate to us by painting a Tuscan
village in his cubism style. We will all be
painting a Tuscan village for the day. It is
going to be a fabulous and exciting
experience.
The workshop takes place on Saturday, April
16th at the Herbert Carnegie Centennial
Centre, 580 Finch Ave (on the north side, just
west of Bathurst) in the Skater's Lounge,
doors to the right of the main arena entrance.

Rosemarie Nicolucci
Toronto Watercolour Society Executive,
Rose Marie Nicolucci, is Publicity Chair
for TWS Executive.
She commenced this voluntary service for
TWS during the 25th Anniversary year
celebrations sharing the duties with Nora
McPhail. Since Nora stepped down last year
she has continued to execute all the duties
for publicity. Currently that means copy for
Slate and a new initiative of advertising
called TheZine which is online. She has
produced a press release which is sent to a
wide list of magazines and newspapers for
free calendar listings for the TWS Aquavision
show May 5 to June 1 at J.D.Carrier Gallery,
Colombus Centre, 901 Lawrence Ave. W.,
Toronto.
Rose Marie has been painting for many
years and has a studio at Beaux-Arts
Brampton. She works in watercolour and
acrylic on canvas in large size formats. The
artist especially loves doing expressive
interpretations of different perspectives of
nature’s elements. Water, and its flows and
movements, and mountains and rocks. “Suns
in your Face” was an award winning picture
in a COAA juried Show
25 Year Member Special Show Vodka Painters of Canada
Bi-Annual Show
From April 1-30, our new 25 year members
will be featured in a special show at the North
York Central Library Foyer Gallery (just
outside of the auditorium where we meet). We
hope there will be a painting from each 25
year member to honour their long and
consistent membership in the club over the
past 25 years. This will be a special show to
honour our members and display our history
to the general public.

100 Years Young!
Our most senior member of TWS will turn
100 on March 26th 2011. Mary is a Lifetime
Member, Signature Member and has also
earned her Bronze, Silver and Gold Levels
of Signature Membership Distinction, having

TWS in 1986 at the age of 75 and this year

Toronto Watercolour Society Show Rules
Bianka Guna
Born in Brasov, Romania, Bianka Guna
lived in Israel and is now Canadian. She
traveled extensively; lived in Middle East,
Europe and North America, and is now living
and working in Canada.
Bianka distinguished herself as an Abstract
Expressionist and conceptual artist,
continually researching fresh and unique
ways to express artistic growth.
everyday. She paints oils, acrylics,
watercolours as well as ink, pastels and
mixed media. Presently acrylics and
watercolour media are prominent.
Bianka’s work can be found in many private
collections in Romania, France, Australia,
Germany, Israel, Canada, UK, Hong Kong,
Sweden and the USA.
Bianka is a graduate of Art Instruction
School from Minneapolis, Minnesota US
with a degree in Illustration and was named
Graduate of the Year in 2007. A member of
CSPWC, SCA , IGAT and a signature
member of TWS, Bianka is an abstract
painter who explores universal themes and
symbols of humanity. Her work draws the
viewer in through its strong, vivid colours
and highly textured surfaces. The imagery is
whimsical , serene and delicate, yet bold
and direct.

institutions for personal art development and
working with numerous well-known artists
and instructors in Canada and abroad,

Ann Harvey has won the Gold Award for
her picture “Riviere Rouge” in the annual
Kitchener Waterloo Society Juried Show. It
is presently hanging in the Homer Watson
Gallery, Kitchener, ON, until March 13, 2011
Jenny Reid
Jenny was born in Surrey, England, and has
drawn and painted all her life. She took
courses in England, and in South Africa, and
after immigrating to Canada, she studied
watercolour at Central Tech. She continues
to study with leading Canadian and US
artists, and takes regular painting trips
around Canada, and overseas.
However, we are secure in library bookings
until December 2012 (with or without
washrooms or functioning dimmer switches).
We have a separate booking for May 2011
in the downstairs Burgundy Room (with
washroom).

Water Media Weekend May 13 – 15, 2011 in Buffalo,
New York
The Burchfield Penney Art Center in Buffalo,
New York,
in collaboration with American
Artist’s Watercolor Magazine enthusiastically
offers a comprehensive workshop weekend to
watermedia artists of all levels and interest.
The Center is pleased to have seven of the
m o s t s o u g h t a f t e r, i n t e r n a t i o n a l l y
acknowledged artists share their experiences
and expertise by offering workshops,
demonstrations and seminars.
The event will begin on Friday May 13, 2011
with an opening demonstration by John
Salminen, an artist with more than 185 major
awards in national and worldwide exhibitions.
His work has been featured in numerous art
magazines and books.
He is included in
Who’s Who in American Art and is an honorary
member of the Jiangsu Watercolor Research
Institute in China.
The next two days, participants will have a
choice of selecting from workshops,
demonstrations and seminars presented by a
roster of today’s masters in watermedia:
- John Salminen
- Philip Burke who’s distinctive art has graced
the pages and covers of leading publications
including Time, Newsweek, The New Yorker,
GQ, Vogue, Sports Illustrated and the New
York Times to name a few.
- Margaret Martin, an acclaimed artist, art
teacher and author most welcomed by the
Toronto Watercolour Society on several
occasions.
- Nicholas Simmons, a celebrated name in
contemporary watercolour, known for his fresh,
unorthodox and often irreverent approach.
- Mel Stabin, teacher, author and world “on
location” painter who studied with Edgar
Whitney.

featured on CBS Sunday Morning as well as
in leading national and international art
publications.

Stephen Quiller

Please be aware of the change in date. In
order to give our membership a chance to see
a Demo by Stephen Quiller, we had to change
the date for our monthly meeting.
Stephen will be teaching a workshop for TWS
May 16, 17 in Acrylic and May 18, 19 in Water
Media
Famed American Artist Stephen Quiller is best
known for his innovative approach to water
media painting: watercolour, gouache, acrylic,
casein and their combinations. He has written
six books, all published by Watson Guptil.
Brigitte was born and educated in Germany
She is an enthusiastic Watercolour instructor,
who teaches throughout Ontario and Canada.
She paints in Watercolour and Oils and finds
some of her subject matter nearby or on her

created his own Palette and Colour Theory.
Stephen is a Signature member of the
American Watercolour Society, the National
Watercolour Society, Rocky Mountain
National Water Media and the Society for
Painters in Acrylic and Casein.
His work is featured in and on covers of many
magazines. He has also been an invited juror
for a number of regional and national art
exhibitions. He is a popular workshop
instructor teaching his approach to Colour,
Watermedia, Composition and on-location

Many times , giving yourself an assignment
to master a new process or technique creates
something unique and unexpected. And
usually while you are trying to figure out what
you are doing, good things come to you out
of the process. Or more precisely, the new
technique opens up new possibilities that you
can plug into your aesthetic. “Showing up is
half the battle”. Even if you don’t know what
you are doing, show up in the studio. You
have been doing some drawings or oil pastel
on cardboard; you have tried some
watercolour on Moleskine sketchbooks.
It is a good exercise to set up an assignment.
Maybe do a series of small portraits. What

symbols that you use. Clear your place for
bigger pieces. Enjoy making smaller versions
of bigger works.
What is the best assignment you have given
yourself? Or was given to you? I have said
this before but I think non-artists would be
surprised at the amount of sitting and staring
that takes place in the studio… and how
exhausting that can be. Sometimes it is a
relief to do something tedious and
monotonous: varnish finished paintings,
gesso canvases, paint backgrounds of future
works…
