Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Nommensen, Medan, North Sumatera 1997 - 2002, Universität Gießen DAAD has opened our eyes to compare what we have so far achieved and what is still to be developed, from an international perspective. DAAD plays an important role in building bridges for international cooperation in higher education between Indonesia and other countries. DAAD helps and facilitates us (Indonesian education professionals, scientists and higher education officials) to create or empower connections within the sciences and technologies, as well as between the cultural and higher education systems in European and Asia countries. DAAD support us to have the opportunity to learn more about the international education system, as well as to establish networks or cooperative projects between Indonesian and Germany, or international colleagues. Dr. rer. nat. Harmonis, S.Hut., M.Sc. Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Mulawarman, Samarinda, East Kalimantan 2002 – 2004, Universität Freiburg DAAD has enhanced my scientific knowledge through DAAD meetings, and seminars supported by DAAD. DAAD also played an important role in our university, to motivate young lecturers to get a better education qualification, especially by studying at a university in Germany. Prof. Dr. Baharuddin Head of Research Center for Biotechnology, Universitas Hasanuddin, Makassar, South Sulawesi 1988 - 1994, Universität Göttingen Prof. Dr. Tutik Kuswinanti, M.Sc.Agr. Secretary of Dept. Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Hasanuddin, Makassar, South Sulawesi 1991 - 1997. Universität Göttingen We believe that DAAD has played a real role, and has contributed to both alumni and the improvement of higher education in Indonesia. Through annual scientific seminars sponsored by DAAD, we can enhance academic capacity building, exchange information about research development, not only with DAAD alumni, but also with other researchers around the world. Thanks DAAD! Prof. Dr.-Ing. Harianto Hardjasaputra Chairman of Research and Community Development (LPPM), Universitas Pelita Harapan Founding Chairman of Euro Asia Civil Engineering Forum Universität Stuttgart I am very proud to be a German Alumni. I always feel Germany is my second home. During my career as an academician and researcher, DAAD has given me the opportunity to contact my former institute and college to realize my ideas in education and research. From the beginning of Euro Asia Civil Engineering Forum (2007),founded by Dr.-Ing. Karl-Heinz Reineck (University of Stuttgart) and myself, DAAD has always been beside me to make successful international conferences, which have been attended by German professors and our German alumni in Indonesia. Dr. rer. nat. dr. Ni Nyoman Ayu Dewi, M.Si Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universitas Udayana, Bali 2009 - 2013, Universität Göttingen To me, studying and living in Germany (because of DAAD) was a great educational investment, personally and nationally. It influenced me a lot in my way of thinking: a process that I called “unraveling me”. I came to realize that success is when the results of our research contribute to knowledge that meets the community’s needs. DAAD has made much effort in providing us with scholarships for research and education, and in providing many levels of assistance for its alumni (e.g. equipment, books, seminars). Therefore, I truly believe, with the support from DAAD we have become a highly qualified person who can contribute to the development of education in our home country. Page 8 April 2015 Internship at DAAD Regional Office Jakarta I am Monique Noske, a German student pursuing a Master’s degree in “Erziehungswissenschaft” (“Educational Sciences”) at University of Potsdam. As part of my study I worked as an intern at DAAD Regional Office Jakarta for two months from March until April 2015. From the very beginning I gained a lot of insights into varied DAAD programmes in Indonesia, demonstrating clearly that the DAAD is far more than an organization awarding scholarships. Besides administrative work, my main tasks have been translating articles and texts for the DAAD alumni magazine “NADI”, taking part in several meetings with DAAD’s cooperation partners as well as preparing and following up on DAAD Alumni Meeting 2015 and the 25 th anniversary of DAAD Regional Office Jakarta. Especially organizing the alumni meeting was an exciting experience. Having been involved in the extensive preparation that went into this great event and having simply participated was a unique opportunity. At a Salak fruit stand during a trip from Balikpapan to Samarinda I met many interesting people during my stay in Indonesia and in addition to professional skills, the internship also helped me gain a number of new social and cultural experiences. While experiencing the differences between living and working in Germany and Indonesia, I learned to adapt and found out more about working in an intercultural environment. Working at DAAD was a great experience which is in no small part due to my DAAD colleagues who created a positive working environment and who welcomed me into their team from the beginning. In this sense I want to thank DAAD Regional Office Jakarta for the great time I had in Indonesia. Author: Monique Noske German DAAD Scholarship Holder in Indonesia Hello, my name is Hannah Blaser and sadly, by the time you read this, I will not be in Indonesia any longer. In the context of my Carlo-Schmid fellowship, I lived and worked in Jakarta for 8 months – and I loved it. I worked with Transparency International Indonesia, a non-governmental organization fighting against corruption. More specifically, I was working on a project together with PT PLN (Persero), the state-owned electricity company, aiming at preventing corruption within the firm through the enforcement of participation, integrity, transparency and accountability in all business processes. This project started in 2012. In 2014, a large online survey was conducted in order to evaluate the project’s implementation status and impacts. My main task was to analyze the data collected during the survey, to edit it and to elaborate recommendations based on the results. Apart from the interesting work, I enjoyed living in Indonesia thanks to the friendliness of the people that crossed my way here. My colleagues made it really easy for me to fit in and were very helpful, the lovely old lady at whose Kost I was living made me almost feel like living with my Grandmother and all new friends I met here made my leisure time just incomparable. I am deeply Bromo, Malang, East Java grateful to all of these persons for making Indonesia what it is for me – a place that made me happy and that I love.
