History of Let Your Yoga® Dance for Parkinson’s
EveryoneisaDancer.PeoplewithParkinson’saresomeofthemostmagnificentdancersIhaveseen.Iamalifelongdancer.Starting
in1984,Imovedintoayogaashram(KripaluCenterforYogaandHealth)andlivedtherefor12years.Untilthattime,mycareerhad
beenintheatreanddance.LivingatKripaluCenter,Ibegantomergeyoga,dance,andthechakras(thebody’senergycenters)
together.LetYourYogaDancewasbornin1995.IhadnoideawhenIbroughtthechakrastogetherwithyogaanddancewhata
powerfulpracticewouldemerge.LetYourYogaDancehasbecomemyspiritualpath.Itisaschool.Wehaveaworldwidecommunity
offellowteachersandpractitioners.
Intheyear2000,peoplewithParkinson’sstartedshowingupinmyLetYourYogaDanceclasses.Somanyinfact,thatIliterally
lookedupintheskyandsaid,“Yo!God!Areyougivingmeasign,becauseIknownothingaboutParkinson’s.”?Well—itseemedthe
answerwas“Yes,”soIwentoutandstartedmyresearch,readingeverythingIcouldaboutthedisease;Ilearnedthemostfrommy
yogadancingstudentswithPD;IgotinvolvedwithMarkMorrisDanceGroupandthewonderfulDavidLeventhalwhonowdirects
DanceforPD.HeandIco-directedapilotPDgroupintheBerkshiresmanyyearsago.In2006,IstartedteachingLetYourYogaDance
forParkinson’sonceaweekinnearbyRichmond,MA.
ThisadventurewithbringingthedanceofyogatopeoplewithParkinson’shasbeendeeplyinspiringforme.Mystudentsaregreat.
Theyarebraveandwonderful—andbeautifuldancers!Idrawonmyrichbackgroundinspirituality,music,yoga,dance,meditationin-motion,fitness,yogicpranayama(i.e.:breath),theatre,t’aichi,singing,sounding,toning,creativity,spontaneity,and
improvisation.Forme,thiscombinationisjustrighttocreateaclassthatbringsjoyandcamaraderietopractitioners,aswellasa

The Seven Movements of the Spine
TheSevenMovementsoftheSpineareagreatwaytostretchthebodyfirstthinginthemorning.Theyogissaythatahealthyspine
isahealthylife.SevenMovementsmaybedonesitting,onhandsandknees,standing,orallthree.Inthiswarmupweare
replicatingthesevenwaysthespinemoves:
FirstandSecondmovements:Rounding—contracting/Shortening—opening
ThirdandFourthmovements:Lateralsideflexion
FifthandSixthmovements:Rotation(twisting)
Seventhmovement:Neutralandlengthenedspine
Canbedonesittinginachair,orstanding,orsittingonthefloor,orlyingonyourback.
FirstandSecondMovements
Inhalethroughthenoseasyoulengthentheback,liftingthetailboneup,lookingupwherewallmeetstheceiling.
Exhalethroughthemouth,roundingthespine,curlingdownasyougazeatyourbellybutton.Pauseforamoment,lettingalltheair
completelyout.
Weareroundingandlengtheningthespine.Repeatseveraltimes.
ThirdandFourthMovements
Lengthenthroughyourspine.Raiseyourleftarmoverhead(unlessyouhavearotatorcuffinjury)andexhaleyourtorsoovertothe
rightside,makingahumancommaoutofyourtorso.Pausethereandbreathedeeply.Inhalebackuptositting,Pause.Inhale,
lengtheningup,andexhale—archingovertotheleftside.Repeat.
FifthandSixMovements
Inhale,lengthenspineandtwisttoyourright.Lookoveryourrightshoulder.(Donotdothiswarmupifyouhavehadrecentsurgery
intheback,orifyouhaveanyspinalcontraindications.)
Seventhmovement
Sitonyoursitzbonesonyourchair.Feelthedownwardfocusofenergyinyourbody.Nowpressyoursitzbonesintothechairand
feelyourspinelengthenup.
Repeatthesesevenmovementsasoftenasyouwish—withmusicandwithbreath.Youcandothesemovementsalsolyingdown.

MeghaNancyButtenheimisonamissionandhastheenergyanddeterminationtoaccomplishit.Inmid-Septembershebegan
teachingaTuesdaymorningclassforpeoplewithParkinson’s,theirfriendsandcaregivers.Theclasscombineschairyoga,yoga
dance,breathworkandgentlemovementandlivelydancingwithwonderful,diversemusic.
Megha,presidentandfounderofLetYourYogaDance®TeacherTrainingandateachertrainerofKripaluYogaTeacherTrainingat
KripaluCenterforYogaandHealthinStockbridge,Massachusetts,hasbeenteachingfor26years.Severalyearsago,shedeveloped
andputherowntrademarkonaprogramcalledLetYourYogaDance,whichshedefinesas“auniqueapproachtomovement,
combiningthetime-honoredtraditionsofyoga,movement,breath,thechakrasystem,anduser-friendlydance”thatanyonecando.
ShediscoveredanothermissionwhenEdRudman,whosummersintheBerkshires,startedtakinghernoontimeLetYourYogaDance
classbecause,hesaid,“Attheageof71,Iwantedtoincreasemyexerciseroutine.”Heapproachedherone-dayandtoldherthathe
hadParkinson’sdiseaseandLetYourYogaDancewasmorehelpfulinaddressinghissymptomsthananythinghehadtriedbesides
his“meds.”Buttenheimfoundhisadmissionsurprising—notbecausetheclasswassobeneficialtohim,butbecauseshehad
anotherstudentwithParkinson’sintheclass.IngridMacGillis,aneighborinPittsfield,hadcalledhersoonafterherdiagnosistwo
andahalfyearsago.Herdoctorsrecommendedstayingflexibleandfocusingonherbalance—thesoonerthebetter.
BecauseParkinson’sdiseaseisaprogressive,degenerativedisorderofthenervoussystem,itbecomesincreasinglydisablingover
time.PeoplewithParkinson’scanhaverigidmuscles,sluggishmovements,andtremors.Theirslowedmovementsmakeitdifficult
towrite,speak,changepositions,andmaintainbalance.MacGillisbegantakingprivateyogalessonswithMegha,whoconvincedher
tobranchoutandtryLetYourYogaDance.Withyoga,“Ihadtoovercomeapersonalbias,”MacGillissaid.Thespiritualcomponent
ofyogawassomethingshedidn’tfeelcomfortablewith—but“yogafeltsogood,”shewaswillingtogothedanceclasseventhough
itmeantovercominganotherbias.
“Iamnotadancer!”shetoldButtenheim.
ButlikemanywhohavetakenButtenheim’sLetYourYogaDanceclasses,shecameawayfeelingjoyful.It’snotjustwhatitdoesfor
yourbody,shesays,“It’swhatitdoesforyourspirit.Whenyouhavebeengivenadiagnosisofamovementdisorder,somethinglike
thiskeepsyoufromfeelingcondemned.”ItalsohelpsdiminishthedepressionmajoritiesofpeoplewithParkinson’ssuffernotasa
reactiontothediseasebutasoneofitssymptomsandsometimesasasideeffectofthemedication.RudmanhassaidLetYourYoga
Dancenotonlylessenshissymptoms,“itmakesmesmileandlaugh.PeoplewithParkinson’sdon’tlaughverymuch.”
Thecoincidenceofhavingtwostudents(andmore)withParkinson’sinherclasssetMeghaonherwaytodevelopaLetYourYoga
Danceprogramspecificallyforpeoplewiththedisease.Shebeganeducatingherselfaboutthedisease;lastsummershemetDavid
Leventhal,aprincipaldancerwithTheMarkMorrisDanceCompanywhohasbeenrunningaDANCEforParkinson’sclassinBrooklyn
forsixyears.InAugust,sheandLeventhalco-directedaclassinaroomdonatedbyKripaluforBerkshireCountypeoplewith
Parkinson’s.TheresponsetotheclassencouragedhertostartlookingforapermanentplacetoconductweeklysessionsofLetYour
YogaDanceforParkinson’s,aplacewhereparticipantswouldhave“asenseofsafetyandfunandcomfortsotheycancreatea
community,”shesaid.

MagsBlackwell,wholivesinLenox,isoneofmembersoftheclass.ShewasdiagnosedwithParkinson’s13yearsago.With
Parkinson’s,shesaid,“There’sadesiretobesecretive.”Shebegandistancingherselffromfamilyandfriends,but“abigturning
pointcameformewhenIrealizedtheeffectIwashavingonotherpeople.Familyandcaregiversneedtosharetheexperience.”
Nowsheworkstoshareherexperienceswithothers.Blackwell,whohasalongcareerincreativityandthearts,knewthatshehad
tofindwaystodealwiththedisease.
“Creativityisaqualityofaliveness,responsivenessorengagementwithlife,”shesaid.“IhaveusedeverythingIknowabout
creativitytocuremyParkinson’s.”Whenshetakeshermedication,shelistenstomusic,because“musicchangescellularstructure
andithelpsmymedstokickin.”Sheisalsowritingabookaboutcreativityandhowithashelpedwithhersymptoms.Whenshefirst
attendedLetYourYogaDanceforParkinson’s,duringthetalkingtimeattheendoftheclassshesharedthepositiveeffectsmusic
hadonhersymptoms.
EdMaurer,aresidentofStockbridge,askedBlackwellsomequestions,andwhenhecamebacktotheclassaweeklater,“hewas
smiling,”shesaid,“andhismovementsweremorefluid.”Hehadbeenlisteningtomusicallweek.BlackwellfindsButtenheim’s
designfortheclass,usingyogaandmusicandbreath,“perfectforpeoplewithParkinson’s.It’slikeopeningadoor—peoplestart
comingin.”
Rudmanishelpingopenthedoorevenwider.“Ithoughtifdancingmakesmethishappy,let’smakesomeotherpeoplehappy,”he
said.HehelpedstartaLetYourYogaDanceforParkinson’sclassinWalthamattheJewishFamilyandChildren’sServicesAgency.
Meghasuppliedtheinstructor,aformerstudentofhers.RudmansaysthatMeghaandher“boundlessenergy”havebeenhis
inspiration.“It’sasifsomespiritualbeingoutthereputustogether.”Wherevershegoesnow,Meghasays,shemeetspeoplewith
Parkinson’sanditisclearthatmanyfeelisolatedandalone,whichisonereasonsheisdeterminedtomaketheprogramgrow.Her
missionispartlyaccomplished—shehasstartedacaringcommunityintheBerkshiresandbeyondforpeoplewithParkinson’s.As
shetakestheprogramfurtherandkeepsexpandingherknowledgeaboutthediseaseandwhatcanbedonetodiminishits
symptoms,sheisalsodoingwhatshedoesbest:encouragingpeopletoexerciseandremainflexible,togainstrengthandsupport.

We developed this certification to enable more Teachers to work with those afflicted with
Parkinson’s.
Today a shift happened with regards to Let Your Yoga Dance for Special Populations.
A couple months ago, while I was leading a Let Your Yoga Dance for Special Populations class in memory care, an experienced
caregiver who was filling in from another facility was observing the class. After the class was over she said to me:
“In all my years of care giving, I have never seen anything like this.”
She was blown away! She said amongst many things, not only is it great for the residents but also for the caregivers. It gives the
caregivers a much needed break as it keeps the residents busy, focused and happy for a long time. It also makes the residents stronger
(legs) which helps the caregivers with transferring and showering.
