Budweiser Select 55 Off to Great Start in St. Louis County
Spring/Summer Fall/Winter 20092010 Budweiser Select 55 Off to Great Start in St. Louis County Budweiser Select 55, introduced nationally earlier this year, is off to a great start throughout the United States but it’s greatest success may be in St. Louis County where market share has reached almost 2 percent. “For a new brand to reach a two percent market share in such a short period of time is remarkable,” said Mike Wiley, Sales Execution Coordinator. “Consumers in St. Louis County have set the pace for the new brand’s introduction.” Grey Eagle reported larger than expected sales and placements with more than 85 percent placements in off-premise accounts and more than 40 percent in on-premise accounts. Brand Development Manager Dave Berkbigler said that the key is “sampling, sampling, sampling.” Locally, Budweiser Select 55’s market share of almost 2 percent compares to its national market share of .7 percent which is an impressive market share in itself. Budweiser Select 55, the world’s lightest beer, is now also available in a 18-can package that is expected to result in increased sales and retailer profits. With only 55 calories and 1.9 grams of carbohydrates, Budweiser Select 55 is a smooth, refreshing light golden lager with the crisp, clean finish of Budweiser Select. It is perfect for a double-header, backyard BBQ or hanging out with friends seeking a balanced lifestyle. Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses raises more than $274,000 for BackStoppers The 23rd annual Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses raised more than $274,000 for the BackStoppers. Last Thanksgiving Eve’s event was sponsored by Grey Eagle Distributors and Anheuser-Busch’s Budweiser brand. Officials of the St. Louis Guns ‘N Hoses Boxing Association presented a check to The BackStoppers on December 22 in the auditorium at the St. Louis County Library. Jerry Clinton, the association’s executive director, presented the check to The BackStoppers’ executive director Ron Battelle as area police and fire officials looked on. “The metropolitan St. Louis community has again stepped up to support The BackStoppers when the need is the greatest,” said Clinton. “We are pleased to continue our long-standing efforts (Continued on page 2) Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses has raised almost $3 million for The BackStoppers. A check from the 2009 event was presented by Jerry Clinton, Executive Director of St. Louis Guns ‘N Hoses Boxing Association. Assisting is David Stokes, President/CEO of Grey Eagle Distributors which was title sponsor with the Budweiser brand. Craft Beers Continue Growth Craft beers continue to gain market share in the United States and in 2009 had a 12.5% dollar growth, the fourth consecutive year of doubledigit dollar growth. Grey Eagle sells and markets a large number of craft beer brands such as Michelob, Goose Island, Widmer and Redhook. The Michelob Brewing Company produces Michelob, Michelob Light, Michelob Amber Bock, Michelob American Ale, and Michelob Porter, Pale Ale, Honey Lager, Dunkel Weisse, Irish Red, and Marzen. AnheuserBusch also brews craft ales such as Shock Top Belgian White Ale–which grew 35.6% in 2009– and seasonal brands including Hop Hound Amber Wheat Ale, Beach Bum Blonde Ale, Jack’s Pumpkin Spice Ale and Winter’s Bourbon Cask Ale. “Craft beer is an approach to brewing that is different from the brewing of some major brands in that craft beers may be brewed and marketed in ways that appeal to particular niche consumer preferences,” said Dave Berkbigler, Brand Development Manager at Grey Eagle. “Craft beers are not necessarily microbreweries and may use the same brewing methods as major breweries but on a smaller scale. However, some small breweries do qualify as craft brewers.” Typically, these craft beers do not have the sales volume as brands such as Budweiser and Bud Light, but they fill sales categories that cater to those who are looking for a certain style of beer compared to major brands. They are also often higher priced. Grey Eagle has distributed the Goose Island family of craft beers for several years and recently introduced the brewery’s new ales, Matilda, Pere Jacques and Sofie. Goose Island Brewery was founded in Chicago in 1988 and gained a national presence in 1995. It produces a variety of craft beers including, 312 Urban Wheat Ale, Honker’s Ale and India Pale Ale which recently won a Gold Medal at the World Beer Cup. The brands have developed a loyal following in St. Louis County. “Goose Island is a leading craft brewery in the United States,” said Mr. Berkbigler. “It is well known throughout the country and has developed a loyal following among St. Louis County consumers.” (Continued on page 5) news About TheGreyEagle Team Mike Bush Neil Komadoski Jr. Bob Bush Ray Edwards Four New Employees Join Grey Eagle Four new employees have recently joined the Grey Eagle team. The BackStoppers is a 3,000-member organization of St. Louis-area citizens, who provide immediate and long-term financial support to families of Police Officers and Firefighters who lose their lives in the line of duty. In the year between Thanksgiving in 2008 and 2009, four police officers and a firefighter died in the line of duty and were honored during Budweiser Guns ‘N Hoses as part of boxing’s ceremonial “Ten-Count.” They were Lt. Gregory Jonas of the Centreville (IL) Police Department, David Grass Jr. of the Ste. Genevieve Fire Department, and Officer Julius Moore of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. The late Sgt. Jay Noser Sr. and Officer Glennon Fernau of the Florissant Police Department were also honored. They were injured in recent years but their deaths this year were directly connected to their duties. Two police officers have died while on duty since last Thanksgiving and will be honored at this year’s show. They are Missouri State Highway Patrol Corporal Dennis Engelhard who died Christmas Day after being hit by a car as he worked a minor accident near Eureka in St. Louis County and Officer David Haynes, a St. Louis City policeman who died March 24 when his patrol car was struck by two vehicles as he pursued a burglary suspect. The BackStoppers cover St. Louis City; St. Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson, Ste. Genevieve, Perry, Franklin, St. Francois, Lincoln, Pike, Warren and Washington counties in Missouri; and St. Clair, Madison, Monroe, Bond and Clinton counties in Illinois. BackStoppers also cover members of Troop C of the Missouri Highway Patrol and District 11 of the Illinois State Police. Retailers Receive We I.D., Alert Cab information Grey Eagle is joining with retail customers to battle underage alcohol use and abuse. Grey Eagle’s retail customers are receiving information developed by Anheuser-Busch’s Corporate Social Responsibility about “We ID” to help them deter underage drinking and materials about Alert Cab. “Grey Eagle and Anheuser-Busch have worked together for 26 years to fight alcohol abuse, drunk driving and underage drinking,” said Shawn Freeman, Marketing Director at Grey Eagle. “By providing up-to-date information, we also are helping retailers continue their own efforts in this area.” April is Alcohol Awareness Month and materials emphasize that the legal drinking age is 21 and that identifications will be checked. Materials being provided to retailers include: • 2010 Drivers License Booklets showing drivers licenses from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada, including those that identify drivers under 21 years old. • We I.D. Cards deter attempts by minors to purchase alcohol and lets the public know the retailer abides by the law. • We I.D. Door Decals and triangle cooler stickers, a variety of materials for coolers, shelves and front doors emphasizing that legal identification is required. Alert Cab Back Bar Sign and brochure to be prominently displayed. Alert Cab provides free cab rides home for patrons of on-premise accounts who should not drive. Sponsored in St. Louis County and City by Grey Eagle, Lohr Distributing, Anheuser-Busch and the service provider, Laclede Cab Company. • New Designated Driver Driver Program Debuts Using a full lineup of TV, radio, digital and point-of-sale, Budweiser launched its new designated driver program ”Wanna Go Home With Me Tonight? I’m the Designated Driver.” With the branded scratch-off card and car decal, it’s easy to show some love to everyone’s favorite driver–the designated driver. And look for the branded Facebook card to drive traffic to the new Budweiser “Wanna Go Home With Me Tonight?” Facebook page. In addition to the point-of-sale materials in retailer accounts, advertising is also running on national and local television and radio stations. Recent studies show that 148 million Americans have been designated drivers or have been driven home by one. Emergency Medical Technicians recently presented the Street Smart program at the National Personnel Records Center on Page Avenue. Joe McCluan, top, and Scott Neusch, left, work with a soldier volunteer to explain the treatment of accident victims. In the program sponsored by Grey Eagle and Anheuser-Busch’s Department of Corporate Social Responsibility, Street Smart emphasizes the importance of wearing seat belts and the dangers of drinking and driving. 3 Non-Alcohol Brands Bring New Sales Opportunities Grey Eagle has distributed non-alcohol brands for many years. These include O’Doul’s, O’Doul’s Amber, Icelandic Glacial H2O water, Busch NA and the biggest seller, Monster energy drinks. Monster brands, available in a variety of flavors, formulations and packages, are “monsters” in the retail market, dominating the categories. “Because Monster energy drinks do not contain alcohol, we deliver them to locations that are not licensed to sell beer or other alcohol products,” said Jim Bannes, Vice President for Sales and Marketing at Grey Eagle. “Because we have the systems in place to efficiently deliver non-alcohol products in addition to Anheuser-Busch beers, we consider adding products that do not compete with our core beer brands,” Mr. Bannes said. Grey Eagle now sells an expanded portfolio of non-alcohol drinks. These include Margaritaville Paradise Key Teas; Nestlé Nesquik, Coffee-Mate and Juicy Juice; Jones Soda, Dad’s Root Beer, Boylan Beverages and Sweet Leaf Ice Teas. Margaritaville Paradise Key Teas Looking for a refreshing tropical escape from your everyday? That’s exactly what you’ll find with the new Margaritaville Paradise Key Teas. Impactful point-of-sale with a “Grab a Pair” message reinforces brand attitude and highlights a “2 for” marketing strategy. He’s from a family of 8 children and his family all live in the area. And if strangers walk in, they are not strangers by the time they leave. “We’re fortunate to have a great location in Concord Plaza with plenty of parking because we are at one end of the stores,” John said. “Combine that with the large variety of food we serve and everyday low prices on beer, and you have a recipe for success.” John and Sue bought the space four years ago room that seats 40 in a banquet configuration and that hosts events such as birthday parties, reunions and receptions.
