Questions? Please call 215-619-8863. Many people wonder exactly “what happens” in the Adult Day Service unit, in the Norristown Center, of Montco SAAC. Well, the most important thing that “happens” is that each participant there has a day filled with fun activities! And, that is only the beginning! WHO is Adult Day Service FOR? Anyone who has been diagnosed with dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or someone who just can no longer be at “home alone”, and their caregiver needs a safe place for them to spend Heart Health Day, 2010 This year's Hearth Health Day was the most entertaining one to date. Not only was there a special exercise program in the Fitness Center, there was a Disco Dance in the dining room. The dance featured some special request numbers from our members as well as mood lighting and a healthy dose of exercise. Special thanks goes to Teri Wassel of the Montgomery County Health Department for her Heart Nutrition presentation and the Cardiovascular Institute of Philadelphia for the grant that funded the program again for the third year in a row! www.montcosaac.com • 610.275.1960 Attendance is based on the needs of the caregiver. Thus, some clients come two days a week, while others attend five days a week. Activities range from exercise, music, arts and crafts, to bowling, volleyball, and golf-all OUR version, of course. But, the bottom line is that the participants are having fun in a safe, statelicensed environment, with a capable and very compassionate staff. Financial assistance may be available for the costs. If you have a loved one that needs such a program, or know someone who could benefit from hearing about it, please call Larry Reed, at (610) 275-1960, for more particulars. PROGRAMS • Norristown Norristown News “Light and Lively” You might have noticed you are seeing “less” of Mary Light, lately. How is that possible when she is here volunteering every day? Mary is one of our “Forever Fit” success stories! Through her diligence and hard work, she had dropped 13 pounds as of press time! Mary decided to join Forever Fit because she had made up her mind to get healthier. She wanted to take advantage of the convenience of having a gym right here at SAAC. She likes the fact that she does not have to drive to a gym. She, also, notes that the price for members is inexpensive, too. What’s the secret of her success? She hits the gym five days a week, after she volunteers for Meals on Wheels. Her average time is 30 minutes. She states that it is easier, now, because she is more fit. It was hard in the beginning. Additionally, she is watching her diet. A look at herself in the mirror gives her the impetus to keep going! She also credits her husband, Dave, for encouraging her. Mary’s advice for anyone who is on the fence about starting a Forever Fit lifestyle, “Just GO! Then, keep going! There are a lot of friendly people there.” Wedding Photo Display We are planning a wedding photo display for our large window, for June. We would like SAAC members, and staff, to bring in their wedding photos, to be put in the display. Please put your name on the back of the photo. You may leave it in a frame if you wish. I am currently attending Millersville University. This is my senior year and I will be graduating May 8, 2010. I am extremely excited. I have a major in Social Work with a minor in Women's Studies. I chose social work as my major because I have a passion for wanting to help others. I cannot wait to be a part of the social work field so I can help put a smile on someone's face. My future plan is to work successfully in the social work field, primarily with children. I want to work with children because I love being around children and I think that this area needs the most help. I eventually want to open my own night care center for children. Of course, in the future, I hope to be married with children. Somewhere down the line I would also like to get my Masters in social work and potentially my Doctorate. Growing up I was very lucky to be raised in a household with both of my parents in the Philadelphia area. I have two sisters (both older) and one brother (younger). I do not have any pets at the moment, but I do want a dog, just a small one. My hobbies include, going out to eat and spending time with my family and friends. I'm Candace Hinkle and I am the social work intern working in the Day Service section at Montco SAAC. I attend Eastern University in St. Davids, PA and plan to graduate in 2011 with a Bachelors in Social Work. What direction to take with my degree is still in the works. For now, I am enjoying my time exploring the different sections that social work involves. Hopefully my experiences while I'm here will help give me an idea of what I would like to do. I have four siblings, all younger than me, and my parents live in Chicago right now. Boomer News Cont’d My father is a pastor and I've done a lot of traveling from high school on. I grew up mostly in Louisiana and still hold true to much of the culture and lifestyle of the South. I enjoy all sorts of activities, but a few that I am particularly interested in right now, would be crocheting, writing poetry and journaling, and I love to cook! I also enjoy volleyball and football and I am planning to travel to the Dominican Republic in February, in conjunction with a group from school and Food for the Hungry, to build outhouses and any other jobs that need to be done. I think many of us don’t choose to attend a center until we experience a life change, such as the loss of a driver’s license or a spouse or partner passing away, but Montco SAAC is a great place for seniors of all ages and one shouldn’t be afraid to try it out. Someone once told me that younger seniors don’t come because they are worried. “They’re worried that they are going to catch what everybody else has — they’re worried that they’re going to catch old. All I can say is, ‘Well, guess what? You are old but you haven’t given up and you have a lot to offer.’” “I wish we could get more younger seniors to come,” said a member as I was watching the goings on. I nodded. Sometimes when I am out in the community, I often see “younger seniors” and I ask them why they don’t stop by the senior center. One woman told me that she isn’t old enough, and when I asked her if she minded telling me how old she was, she replied, “72.” I do believe that our youth oriented culture has attached a stigma to the words ‘senior citizen. I think people think it means someone who is on the downhill slide. AARP says it’s someone who is 50 years or older. It should be a word spoken with pride. What was the feeling that there was something missing? Could it be you? Your Friend, But with classes on cell phones, computer usage, art, line dancing, health and fitness and more paired with a new Nintendo Wii and internet café and transportation and food programs, our senior centers are great places for seniors young and old to learn something new and, most importantly, meet new friends.
