3FJOUIBM 10:4%03' Where is South Moravia? Brno Wine Trail Far from any sea, landlocked in the centre of Europe, lies the picturesque wine region of Moravia. Wine experts call its climate “continental”, to distinguish it from the Mediterranean climate of vineyards in southern France, Italy and Spain. And indeed it is different – still to be discovered, expansive and welcoming, brimming with history and folklore, bursting with the colours of folk costumes, meadow wildflowers and the decorative façades of small wine cellars. Along with wine regions in Hungary, Slovakia and Lower Austria it is part of the Pannonian wine region, and of all the wine regions in the world only here will you find wine-cellar lanes – rows of small buildings that were built above underground cellars centuries ago. Do you know why wine is kept in cellars? And why wine cellars are located below the vineyards instead of in houses in the villages? The dominant feature of the Brno skyline is the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul, built atop one of the highest hills in the city. On the facing hill, which was planted with vineyards in the Middle Ages, stands a mighty competitor: the massive, fortified Špilberk Castle. What you will not see at first glance, but are definitely worth discovering, are Brno’s wine cellars and its underground. Historians say that Brno is the only city where every cellar is somehow connected with wine. In the past, wine was produced, stored, archived or traded in them. It’s a fitting start to your journey along the wine trail, don’t you think? Sweetened by the sun, seasoned by the night 295 295 Top events Cyclists can easily ride this trail from Brno towards the vineyard-rich south. The landscape here is flat, punctuated with wayside crosses, small chapels and solitary trees surrounded by fields. On the way south along the Svratka River, you can visit one of the largest monasteries in Moravia – Rajhrad. And you should not miss the famous site of the Battle of the Three Emperors near Slavkov (Austerlitz), in which Napoleon Bonaparte was victorious. 166 166 … this is the key to the uniqueness of our wines. The grapes are not overripe and they possess a rare harmonic blend of sweetness from plenty of sunlight and acidity from our chilly nights. When you visit any of our vintners, your wine will be pulled straight from the cask with a pipette – a special vessel in which wine is transferred from barrel to glass. Everything having to do with wine must be done in cellars, because wine needs stable low temperatures for its proper maturation and storage. And cellars are located directly at the vineyards because in the past the smallholders didn’t have enough space in their humble abodes for making wine, therefore they built their cellars right below the vineyards. How convenient! Cycling through the land of monuments and wine The most famous early inhabitant of our region is known literally throughout the world. It is a certain Venus of Věstonice, a female of buxom form whose statue was created by an unknown mammoth hunter some 30,000 years ago. You may choose to begin your pilgrimage through our region’s history, monuments and vineyards in her discovery site, the winemaking village of Dolní Věstonice. The Moravian Wine Trails will take you past the most beautiful sights of the region – historical towns, churches and wayside crosses in small villages. They will lead you to beautiful views of vineyard slopes, to wine-cellar lanes and also to the natural treasures of the Podyjí National Park and the Pálava Biosphere Reserve. Today this landscape, its parks and architectural monuments, together make up one of the largest UNESCO-listed sites. So it’s high time to get in the saddle of your bike and discover it for yourself. We wish you happy travels by day and evenings spent – how else? – sipping some refreshing Grüner Veltliner or some Cabernet Moravia, a variety developed in the Czech Republic. This is something you won’t experience anywhere else in the world! 127 192 May/June Ignis Brunensis (Brno) An international fireworks display set to music. The best in contemporary pyrotechnics from across Europe will light up the sky above Špilberk Castle and reflect in the surface of the Brno reservoir. 61 In this rolling countryside of fruit-growers and winemakers, you’ll find the almost mythical town of Dolní Kounice. If you are spiritually inclined and would like a tip, head to the magical ruins of the Rosa Coeli (“Rose of Heaven”) Monastery. The imposing ruin of a former Gothic church impresses everyone, but it is said that more receptive individuals can sense waves of positive energy emanating from its walls. Since their establishment in 1181, the monastery and church have witnessed a lot – even the wedding between a local provost and one of the nuns in the 14th century, which spelled the beginning of the end for this important Moravian religious community. The second point of interest is the renowned red wine variety Blaufränkisch (called Frankovka in Czech). According to historical sources, the effects of this wine contributed to the great reconciliation in 1185 near Dolní Kounice between warring forces that were vying to rule over the Bohemian and Moravian lands. Raise a goblet of the local Frankovka wine and relish its dark ruby colour and rugged, slightly spicy flavour, which after some mellowing becomes velvety with hints of blackberry, plum, black cherry, stone fruit pits and cinnamon. www.dolnikounice.cz 73 2 Rajhrad – Benedictine Abbey and Museum of Literature in Moravia May/June Slavkov Days and St. Urban Feast (Slavkov u Brna) Get to know the traditions of the Moravian countryside at a craft fair and by watching folklore ensembles perform. Experience a traditional feast-day celebration that features a procession of youths in folk dress and a demonstration of folk dancing. 82 82 192 Don’t miss 149 149 Awaiting wine lovers in this region are some hills with the ideal conditions for growing grapes. On the highest of them, with steep southern slopes, lucrative vineyards were owned by the nobility and the Church as far back as the Middle Ages. Wine from here was transported to the tables of their palaces in Brno and Slavkov and to the Rajhrad Monastery. Monastic winemaking flourished here for centuries. In the second half of the 17th century, local monks operated a truly large-scale wine trade – they provided wine to all the Benedictine monasteries in the Czech lands. In the monastery cellars you can still taste aromatic wines such as Irsai Oliver, Moravian Muscat (Muškát moravský), Pálava, Gewürztraminer (Tramín červený), Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Gris (Rulandské šedé). The Czech Service Quality System logo ensures you an optimal level of service quality across the entire tourism sector. The Czech Tourist Authority – CzechTourism www.czechtourism.com — Moravian Wine Trails www.stezky.cz — Tourist Authority of South Moravia www.jizni-morava.cz Dolní Kounice The history of this monastery can be traced back to the turn of the first millennium. In the mid-14th century the monastery began to brew beer, and 100 years later the monks planted the first vineyards. Today, the monastery houses the Museum of Literature in Moravia. How could it not when the abbey’s library is among the most beautiful in all of Moravia – it was designed by Jan Blažej Santini Aichel himself. The library holds many treasures. For example, you can browse through some of the correspondence of Alfons Mucha, the world-renowned Art Nouveau master who designed a series of posters for the famous French actress Sarah Bernhardt and painted the Slav Epic – an outstanding cycle of monumental paintings about the history of the Czechs and other Slavic nations. www.rajhradskyklaster.cz 4 Slavkov Battlefield – Cairn of Peace Down a sludgy field path marches a column of soldiers wearing the uniform of the Austrian Army from the time of the Napoleonic Wars. Shoes caked with mud keep a regular pace. At the end of the procession is a wagon pulling a field canon. Enthusiasts from various military history clubs head to the Slavkov Battlefield each year to recreate the famous Battle of the Three Emperors. On 2 December 1805 on this site, widely known as Austerlitz, smoke rose from 250 canons and 100,000 carbines. A total of 73,400 Frenchmen in blue coats with red collars opposed the 85,400 grey coats of the allied forces. Within hours, Napoleon’s strategy prevailed over the greater numbers of the Russo-Austrian coalition of Tsar Alexander I and Holy Roman Emperor Francis II. More than a century later, in 1910–11, the Cairn of Peace was built on the site of a key battle. Let yourself be transported back in time by the originally conceived multimedia exhibition “The Battle of the Three Emperors. Slavkov/ Austerlitz 1805” inside the monument. The famous battle is marked not only by the stone cairn: At the beginning of December each year, it is commemorated by a thousand troops in the uniforms of the armies of France, the Duchy of Warsaw, Austria, Russia and Saxony, along with 60 horses and dozens of canons. The huge battle recreation is so real that you can smell the gunpowder. www.moravanapoleonska.cz 3 Brno – Špilberk Castle Just like every proper castle, Špilberk is shrouded in mystery and legend. Right at the entry gate, you can see the head of a devil, said to have been petrified here during the siege of Brno by the Swedes in the Thirty Years’ War. Do you know why the midday bells of the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul chime at 11 a.m. instead of noon? It is a reminder that Brno successfully defended itself. You can enjoy marvellous views of the city from a number of lookout points and pavilions around the fortress castle. But people come to Špilberk not just for its high points but also for its depths. Its casemates are an architectural curiosity. Built in 1742, they originally were used for baking bread and as drainage channels. In 1783, after a decision by Emperor Joseph II, the castle became a “prison of nations”, where Italian Carbonari and other opponents of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy were held. www.spilberk.cz 4 Other interesting places along the way Accommodations The Cyclists Welcome certification is an indication of high-quality services geared particularly to cyclists. Certified food-service and lodging facilities, camp sites and tourist destinations all provide the ideal base for you and your bike. Establishments marked with this logo guarantee safe storage of bikes, equipment available for repairs and bike washing, facilities for washing and drying clothes, and a range of other useful services. www.cyclistswelcome.cz 61 1 Map of the Brno Wine Trail Published by CzechTourism, Prague 2014 © Vinohradská 46, 120 41 Praha 2 Text: Partnerství o.p.s., DRING Consulting s.r.o. The ancient market square, surrounded by palatial buildings in styles ranging from Renaissance and Baroque to Modernist, is the site of a permanent farmers’ market offering a wide variety of seasonal produce. You can descend into the underground labyrinth below the square, where you will learn how coins were once minted and how criminals were punished in the Middle Ages. You can see an alchemists’ workshop in the middle of the maze where they once tried to turn lead into gold. The underground corridors and the above-ground fruit and vegetable market have been here for more than 700 years. www.gotobrno.cz 7 Blacksmith`s workshop in Těšany The forge is preserved as it looked in the year 1700, but its foundations are even 350 years older. You can experience for yourself how heavy the tongs are that the blacksmiths used for grasping the hot iron as they hammered it into a plough or some decorative ironwork for a chateau gate. To this day, you can hear the peal of metal on metal when young men gather here for a blacksmiths’ competition in the late summer. www.technicalmuseum.cz 5 Chateau in Slavkov u Brna (Austerlitz) If you are not sure what purpose three levels of cellars could have served a Baroque chateau, you can find out below the Slavkov Chateau. You will hear its history told by the figure of a barber, a baker or a horse groom. Nearly the entire first floor of the chateau is open to the public. Its unique furnishings were once used by the French Emperor Napoleon when he spent the night here several times after his famous battle victory. When you exit the underground and enter the French garden, you’ll find the view to be soothing and uplifting. The expansive chateau park is one of the most important historical Baroque gardens in Moravia. www.zamek-slavkov.cz 6 Parrot Zoo in Bošovice The colourful world of parrots will enchant you, if for no other reason than there is nothing else like it in the Czech Republic. You can see dozens of parrots from all continents in 80 spacious aviaries. And when you visit the zoo with an entry ticket from the chateau in Slavkov, you will receive a discount. www.south-moravia.info Brno Wine Trail
