15.0. MAULANA AZAD LIBRARY
Maulana Azad Library whose foundation stone was laid by Lord Lytton, the Viceroy of India in 1877, is
the central library of the Aligarh Muslim University which is World famous for its invaluable collections
of manuscripts and rare books available in oriental languages. The Library holds an invaluable
collection of about 15,162 rare manuscripts, one of which written on parchment in Koofi script claimed
to be inscribed by Hazrat Ali 1400 years ago. Several royal decrees of Moghal emperors namely
Babur, Akbar, Shahjahan, Aurangzeb, Shah Alam etc. and also translations of Sanskrit works such
as Bhagwad Geeta, Mahabharata and Leelawati in Persian by Abul Faiz Faizi, are some of the
highlights of the manuscripts collection of this Library.
The Library has been modernized to provide computerized services to the University community at
large. It includes provision for on campus wide access to online catalogue, online journals, two lac Ebooks and other digital resources. The Library has installed a network of CCTV and an automatic
security gate that restrict the incidents of pilferage and book theft respectively.
The Library completed 50 years of its magnificent service in the year 2012. To commemorate this
occasions, two important events were organized in the Library which include foundation of the Golden
Jubilee Block and the release of the Nahjul-Balaghah comprising of the letters, speeches and
aphorisms of Hazrat Ali by the ex-foreign minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr. Ali Akbar Wilayati.

16.0. SIR SYED ACADEMY
On October 22, 1974, Sir Syed Academy was established in the Sir Syed House. It consists of four
sections: Archives, Museum, Library and Laboratory. Since the Academy has old records of Scientific
Society, M. A. O. College and Aligarh Muslim University, many scholars visited the Academy to
consults this rare historical materials. Academy has a Museum in which some personal belongings of
Sir Syed Ahmad Khan are kept. Apart from this, some group photographs of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and
later period are displayed here. This year more than 1000 persons including scholars visited Academy.
The Academy published three books, one booklet and one folder. More than two hundred fifty
documents were laminated and some photographs were added in the collection of Academy's
photographic Archives. Approximately twelve hundred old registers which are a part of MAO College
and Aligarh Muslim University, were accessioned during this period. This year the Academy also got
possession of the 'Shawl' of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and the 'Sherwani' which was a part of MAO
College's students dress. These antiques have been displayed in the Museum.

In addition, the UGC Academic Staff College also arranged the following programmes:

ACCESS Programme in collaboration with the US Embassy, New Delhi
As part of International collaboration, a two year programme for gaining English language skills
(Listening/Speaking/Reading/Writing) was launched in November 2007 for one hundred socially and
financially under privileged School children of Aligarh Muslim University Schools sponsored by
American Centre, US Embassy, New Delhi. The Programme is now in its fifth year with the enrolment
of 200 AMU school children. So far 500 AMU school children have benefitted from this Programme. As
part of the Academic Exchange Programme, Dr. Munira T., Assistant Professor of English, Women's
College AMU and member of the ACCESS teaching team was invited by the U.S. Department of State
on the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) to visit the United States for three weeks in
March 2012. Ms Hira Sultana, former student of the ACCESS programme and presently studying
Diploma Engineering AMU also visited the United States in 2012.
Fulbright Language Assistant Training Programme
Over the years the ASC has been organizing training programmes for AMU students and research
scholars to apply for the one year FLA Scholarships in the US. In August 2011 Mr. Kamran was
selected as FLA. For the year 2012-13 three MA (English) students have been selected.
National Hindi week
The UGC Academic Staff College, AMU organized HINDI WEEK from 14.09.2011 to 20.09.2011 and
held Hindi essay writing competition for the participants of Orientation Programme. The best three
essays were awarded prizes.
One-day Meet of the Heads of the Departments of AMU
This Meet was held on 23rd April 2011 in which 32 Chairpersons of the various Departments of AMU
participated. The theme of the meet was Empowerment of Minorities in the XII Plan. The papers
presented at the Meet have been published entitled 'Empowerment of Indian Muslims: Muslims'
Perspectives, Planning and Road Ahead' New Delhi, Concept, 2012.
NAAC Team Visit
As part of the MHRD initiative for improving and assessing the performance of ASCs, a three member
NAAC team visited UGC ASC, AMU from 23.01.2012 to 25.01.2012. This NAAC team comprised the
following:

During their visit the NAAC team had extensive discussions with the AMU Vice Chancellor, members
of the UGC ASC, Advisory Committee, Director and Faculty Members, Resource Persons of the
Orientation Programmes, Subject Refresher Courses, Principals of several Colleges and some
Course Participants. The team inspected the infrastructure and other facilities. This team will submit
its report directly to the MHRD.
British High Commission Workshops (March 2012)
Fully funded by the British High Commission New Delhi, The UGC Academic Staff College, AMU in
collaboration with the Dept. of Political Science AMU organized three workshops (five-days each) on
Understanding the Threat of Violence and Terrorism in a Multicultural World for AMU students
including those from Madrasa background on the following dates:

50 Research Scholars

During these workshops the students interacted with resource persons on topics like Tolerance in
Islam, the Multicultural Society in the UK and aspects of cultural diversity such as linguistic diversity,
secularism, pluralism etc. Short film shows and cultural evenings were also organized and poster
making, essay and speech competitions were held. In the valedictory function, Mr. Iain Twigg, Second
Secretary, Political Dept., British High Commission, New Delhi, handed over certificates to all
participants along with prizes to winners of competitions.
