Congratulations to Belmont Schools and Tishomingo County High School for the Star School ratings. This is the highest rating and reflects many years of hard work by teachers, administrators, parents, and students. The high ratings, however, do not mean that high school graduates are ready for the workforce. Additional technical, vocational, or higher education are required nowadays for jobs that pay a living wage. With the loss of millions of manufacturing jobs to foreign nations and the constantly changing technology required by business and industry, high school graduates should plan to, at a minimum, spend another year or two in technical or vocational school or in “on-the-job” training programs. Tishomingo County guarantees tuition for local high school graduates to attend Northeast Mississippi Community College. Additionally, Tri-State Educational Foundation may fund college, law school, or medical school tuition for qualifed applicants. There are many other sources of scholarships, grants, work-study programs, and loans. Ellie’s Cafe. Ellie’s Cafe has opened in Burnsville. Owner Kathy Ross is following in her mother’s footsteps. Economic developers have known this for decades, but this study emphasizes once again that small business development is the key to successful local economies. Annual Meeting.
