Service Skills Certification. The Service Skills Certification is an 86 hour
classroom training program that will provide the necessary skills for entrylevel employment in the Service Industry. The Service Industry includes Retail, Banking, Insurance, General and Medical Office, Distribution, and many
others. The program runs for three weeks, Monday through Thursday, 8AM – 3PM.
Classes begin Monday July 8th on the Northeast Campus in Corinth. This certification
is now a prerequisite for the Certified Nurse Assistant and Dental Assistant Training. A
similar program for manufacturing skills is also offered by NEMCC. For more information
contact Continuing Education at (662) 720-7296, or by email: [email protected],
or information is available at Northeast Mississippi Community College in Corinth and
Booneville.
According to local personnel managers in business and industry, the greatest needs of
the local workforce are work ethics and basic skills training. A high school diploma was
once considered sufficient for a young person to earn a living wage; nowadays, a one or
two year technical degree or certification, college degree in a field in demand, or graduate
degree are required to qualify for a living wage job. Additionally, the greatest demand in
the job market is for workers with technical degrees or certifications. College degrees are
in less demand unless the degree is in science, technology, math, health, or engineering.
There is little that we can do about the loss of the old type of jobs in the USA and the continuing decline in middle class incomes, but whether we are young or just young at heart,
we can become more competitive by learning new skills and better work ethics.
We appreciate Northeast Mississippi Community College for going the extra mile to prepare us for the sometimes frightening new economy and work environment.

business guide is being updated and prepared for reprinting. A limited number of copies were printed in early 2013.
The updated business guide is posted on the county’s web
site at www.tishomingo.org. The 50 page guide will be
printed soon and made available to the public free of charge.
A number of interesting historical and other tidbits about
Tishomingo County are included in the business guide.

Attitude is Everything.
Dr. Richard Brown of Booneville, aka “the Attitude Doctor”,
has developed a number of concise attitude training programs. According to Dr. Brown,
“most people believe attitudes just happen. They don’t. Your attitudes become the blueprint for your lives. The thoughts we hold in our mind, over time, become our attitudes.
Negative attitudes, full of fear and doubt, reinforce negative, unproductive and self-defeating behaviors. But thinking positively creates positive attitudes, responses, and feelings toward the people and events around us. The noted psychologist, William James,
said, “The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their
lives by altering their attitudes of mind.”” Positive people have better health, are more
productive, and earn more than people with negative attitudes. Dr. Brown is offering short
workshops for small and large groups. You can learn more about Dr. Brown at his web
site at www.attitude-store.com, or call (662) 728-3413.
Kemp’s Hometown Emporium. Kemp’s Hometown Emporium cut the ribbon on a new hardware store on Saturday, May 25, 2013. In addition to hardware, appliances, and rent to own merchandise, the store carries name
brand mattresses; Apple Barn jams, jellies, molasses, and other famous products; Amish products such as soap,
jelly, apple butter, molasses, and other products; and local arts and crafts such as jewelry, flowers, handmade signs,
quilts, Covenant Creek Farm goats milk products; and many others. The business is also a local UPS shipper and
the only EBAY store in the area. The business will sale, pack, and ship items for EBAY. Kemp’s Hometown Emporium is located at 103 Main Street, phone number 662-454-9992. Business hours are 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday thru
Thursday, 8 AM to 6 PM Friday, and 8 AM to 4 PM Saturday.
Woodall Mountain. The Highpointers Club placed a mailbox with a visitors registry
on Woodall Mountain late last year. There were approximately 900 entries during the
eight month period from August 30, 2012, to May 5, 2013.
Entries likely represent
only a small percentage of the visitors to Woodall Mountain. Woodall Mountain visitors
include residents of all of the southern USA states plus Minnesota, Wisconsin, New
Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Colorado, California, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri,
Massachusetts, New Mexico, Washington, Oregon, Maine, Michigan, Wyoming, Maryland, North Dakota, Indiana, Alaska, New York, Utah, South Dakota, Arizona, and Montana, plus foreign countries such as Germany, England, Lithuania, and Canada. Most
comments are positive although some note that vegetation needs to be cleared so
that visitors can see the surrounding countryside and others suggested an observation
tower. Some express regret over the theft of the High Pointers’ plaque. Most visitors
appear to be passing through the area.
Start Your Own Business. The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) offers free individual
and private counseling services to businesses and individuals who want to start a business. Contacts are Charles Killebrew at the Tupelo Renasant Center for Ideas, on Tuesdays and Thursdays,
phone 662-680-6988, or James Carden at the SBDC at UM in Oxford, Monday thru Friday, phone
800-725-7232. The SBDC web site at www.mssbdc.org offers valuable information for existing
