By any measure, Ledcor’s fleet is more diverse than it has ever been in our history. The sheer power and size of some of our biggest excavators and rock trucks is attention-getting. But the scope of our owned fleet is what’s truly impressive. Every time our fleet grows, our ability to serve our clients grows along with it. Each investment that we make is a strategic move to be the best partner possible. Every new truck, every bulldozer, every pipelayer, every barge, and every helicopter. They all make us more efficient. More responsive. Higher quality. More sustainable. And always safer. In this issue of The Globe, we’ve set out to give you a high level view of the Ledcor fleet as a whole — where it is today, where it’s headed tomorrow, and what it all means for our clients in every industry. Some of our heavy machines are truly remarkable — from super-sized excavators to equally huge haul trucks — designed to serve the massive needs of our mining, pipeline, oil and gas, and infrastructure clients. But behind these big machines is an even bigger idea: investing millions in our own equipment is critical to getting the job done right. Our fleet means many things to us. It means being able to scale up or down easily. It means deploying faster and responding more effectively to changing project demands. And it means being able to have operators that are tried-and-true experts in the equipment they operate. In other words, our fleet helps us deliver quality and safety, on time and on budget. Keeping it all moving If you’re going to run an industry-leading fleet, you’d better also do industry-leading maintenance and training. That’s what keeps our fleet moving reliably. Our workflow systems account for everything from inspections, to preventive maintenance, to upcoming availability, to current utilization — for every single piece of equipment. This not only keeps our fleet in top shape, it also gives us the power to forecast and address fleet requirements well in advance. But when it comes to safety, the fleet itself is only half of the equation. The other half is our operators. We’ve taken a hands-on approach to training expert operators, with our own rigorous Operator Competency program founded on frameworks established by safety regulators. It’s all a part of our “Think Safety, Work Safely” philosophy. Thanks to training and maintenance standards that are second to none, we’re moving even closer to our ultimate goal of zero equipment-related incidents. Improvement is part of the job Our fleet is always growing and changing. Here’s just a quick snapshot of our fleet as it is today — a selection of the heavy equipment that serves some of our biggest projects in mining, oil and gas, pipeline, highways, and infrastructure. But remember that it won’t stay this way for very long. Because we’re always making investments that will help us work more safely, more efficiently, and more sustainably than ever before. The Globe winter 2015 3 MINING Training meets technology As part of our rigorous Operator Competency program, we run a $1 million CAT heavy equipment simulator. That gives our crews maximal experience working with some of our heaviest machines. 181 loaders 4 The Globe winter 2015 149 heavy-duty rock trucks from 25 ton articulating trucks to 260 ton rigid frame trucks. Together, our rock trucks can haul 10,129 metric tons at the same time. That’s almost 1,860 African elephants. 157 excavators 104 PIPELAYERS Sideboom safety We’ve made a major financial commitment to optimize the safety of our sideboom fleet. That includes retrofitting the entire fleet with roll-over protection, as well as converting or replacing all live draw-works with hydraulic operations. PIPELINE More pipeline capacity We’re committed to leading the pipeline industry. That commitment is driving our recent $30.5 million investment in heavy-duty mainline equipment. Our acquisitions include 10 CAT 336EL Excavators, 25 CAT 349EL Excavators, nine CAT D6T Dozers, five CAT D8T Dozers, one CAT 14M Motor Grader, and 10 CAT pipelayers. The Globe winter 2015 5 44 COMPACTORS Our road crews lay an average of 500,000 metric tons of asphalt concrete each and every year. HIGHWAYS AND INFRASTRUCTURE 24 crane crawlers and CARRIERS 6 The Globe winter 2015 7000+ km / 4,300+ miles Length of the highways we maintain in western Canada. That’s about the distance from New York to Rome. 149 DOZERS AND GRADERS 3MOBILE ASPHALT PLANTs New asphalt technologies We’re in the process of acquiring a new, more sustainable asphalt plant that will deliver higher quality product with fewer emissions. Built for flexibility, the plant will put us at the leading edge of the market in western North America and allow us to continue adopting and refining new asphalt technologies. 15 drilling rigs The Globe winter 2015 7 BUILDING METROTOWER III IVANHOÉ CAMBRIDGE BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA. Construction is complete on the newest addition to the Metrotower Office Complex in the city of Burnaby’s central commercial district. Metrotower III is a 29-story “AAA” Class office building that is pre-certified by the U.S. Green Building Council as LEED for core and shell development. 8 The Globe winter 2015 The 29-story building includes a five-story underground parkade, over 37,000 m2 (400,000 ft2) of office space, and features an iconic curved glass structure. The building also includes an ‘end of trip’ facility, with a large bike storage area and shower amenities. The exterior landscaping is highlighted by three pools interconnected by two cascading waterfalls. BUILDING Oshawa Centre IVANHOÉ CAMBRIDGE OSHAWA, ONTARIO. Work is continuing on a BUILDING major expansion and renovation of Oshawa Centre in southern Ontario. With about 24,000 m2 (260,000 ft2) of new construction, the project will revitalize existing common areas and add new retail space, a food court, and underground parking. Once complete, the shopping center will be able to offer over 116,000 m2 (1.25 million ft 2) of leasable space. Early site work began in May 2013, and by February 2014 we entered into the main expansion phase. One of our biggest challenges has been the need to maintain public access and shopping comfort. To address this, our crews work on many interior renovations through the night, and then affected areas are cleaned and turned over before shoppers arrive the next day. We’re currently targeting a LEED certification on this project, with several major conservation measures including a new roofing membrane, high-efficiency mechanical units, water-reducing washroom fixtures, and improved waste diversion. The official opening date is set for April 2016. CATERPILLAR DEALERSHIP KRAMER Ltd. BATTLEFORD, SASKATCHEWAN. We have recently wrapped up work on a new 4,500 m2 (48,000 ft 2) sales and service facility for our long-time client Kramer Ltd., the official Caterpillar dealer for the province of Saskatchewan. We designed and built the facility from the ground up, including office space and a shop and parts area. The Globe winter 2015 9 BUILDING THE QUAD, PHASE III SEABREEZE PROPERTIES SAN MARCOS, CALIFORNIA. This student housing unit for California State University San Marcos houses over 300 people in 64 units. The winery building includes a tank room and a barrel room holding six tanks and 120 aging barrels. 10 The Globe winter 2015 BUILDING CALIFONIA STEEL PIPE MILL #2 CALIFORNIA STEEL FONTANA, CALIFORNIA. Ledcor has finished work on the turn-key installation of a new equipment process line for California Steel. The fully automated steel pipe process line is almost ½ mile long and will produce 26-inch diameter, 0.75-inch thickness steel pipe. To meet the spring deadline, we adopted an aggressive schedule with multiple crews working to take care of demolition, concrete work, equipment rigging, and mechanical piping. The Globe winter 2015 11 BUILDING VAUGHAN MILLS EXPANSION IVANHOÉ CAMBRIDGE VAUGHAN, ONTARIO. Ledcor is moving onto phase two of the massive expansion of the Vaughan Mills Shopping Centre in the Greater Toronto Area. We are adding 18,580 m2 (200,000 ft2) to the mall, with a new entrance and space for 48 additional retail tenants. To accommodate the increased traffic, nearly 375 parking spaces are also under construction. 12 The Globe winter 2015 In addition to the new wing, the project includes renovations to over 5,500 m2 (60,000 ft2) of the existing mall, including upgrades to the food court, an interactive digital lounge, and a space dedicated to live events. The project is expected to be completed in Summer 2015. Oil & Gas CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT at LEDCOR NISKU Communications ALBERTA FIRST RESPONDERS RADIO COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM HARRIS CANADA SYSTEMS INC. ALBERTA. In 2011, Ledcor began building a new two-way radio network for Alberta’s police, fire, and emergency medical services. Of the planned 225 sites, we have now completed work on 123, and the project as a whole is on track for completion by the end of 2015. Funded by the Government of Alberta, the project will greatly improve collaboration by allowing different jurisdictions and agencies to communicate on a single network. It will also substantially increase coverage to 95 percent of primary and secondary highways. At each site, Ledcor’s work can range from adding antennas to existing towers, to erecting new selfsupporting towers. For this reason, work on any one site can take anywhere from a single day up to a couple of weeks. NISKU, ALBERTA. At Ledcor’s pipe fabrication and module assembly facility in Nisku, we’ve been making significant investments and taking bold steps in a Lean Continuous Improvement Journey first launched in Spring 2013. At its core, Lean is a framework for business improvement that looks at value-creating processes and removes barriers for our teams to safely deliver their work. Often this means improving information flow, providing the right tools and materials to people at the right time and place, and removing excess stress from everyday tasks. The result is a streamlined workflow with minimal waste. At the same time, Ledcor Nisku has been bringing in new equipment and automated systems to expand production capacity. That includes high-amperage TIG machines for specialty alloy welding, and a new pipe-cutting table that is twice as fast and able to handle higher diameters (up to 48 inches) and heavier stock (up to SCH 140 at 24 inches). Although the journey is not yet over, we’re already enjoying a more efficient and highercapacity facility that preserves our high safety standards. The Globe winter 2015 13 14 The Globe winter 2015 Oil & Gas SATURN SISTER COMPRESSOR PROJECT ENCANA DAWSON CREEK, BRITISH COLUMBIA. In northeastern British Columbia we are working with Encana to construct a new compressor station at the Saturn Sister gas compression facility. When completed, the station will provide 5.6 million m3 (200 million ft 3) of sweet raw gas per day to a processing facility run by Spectra Energy. Ledcor’s current scope of work includes the fabrication and assembly of piperack modules at our facility in Nisku, Alberta. Our work onsite includes foundations, earthworks, mechanical, electrical, and the erection of pre-fabricated equipment modules from third-party suppliers. Mechanical completion is planned for Spring 2015. In addition to this facility, we are also preparing for work on the first of four new gas plants in the Montney Basin in northern BC. Construction on the first plant starts in 2015. The Globe winter 2015 15 Oil & Gas Terminal Connection Project ENBRIDGE Pipelines EDMONTON, ALBERTA. We are installing 8,000 m (26,000 ft) of 36-inch pipe on behalf of Enbridge, linking their Edmonton Terminal with a new oil storage development lying on the opposite side of a major highway, and connecting two of their newest pipeline systems into the expanding facility. 16 The Globe winter 2015 Over 5,200 m (17,000 ft) of pipe will be installed using horizontal directional drilling. This will allow our crews to install the pipelines under existing buried utilities and the highway without disrupting traffic. Multiple drilling crews will work simultaneously to complete the project in about six months. Mining pan project midway gold EUREKA, NEVADA. Ledcor is ramping-up operations as the mining contractor for Midway’s open-pit Pan Project, now under construction at the northern end of the Pancake Mountain Range in central Nevada. We will provide all of the workforce and equipment necessary for drilling, blasting, loading, and hauling ore from two open pits to be processed on a central leach pad. After construction delays caused by weeks of record rainfall, we are now increasing our staffing levels to prepare for operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Once in full production, we will be moving approximately 1.8 million metric tons of ore and waste per month. The mine is expected to produce one million ounces of gold at low cost due to the shallowness of the deposits. The Globe winter 2015 17 Mining GIBRALTAR MINE TASEKO MCLEESE LAKE, BRITISH COLUMBIA. Ledcor has been contracted to further develop the Gibraltar Mine and relocate 27 million metric tons of waste material. This copper-molybdenum mine is the second largest open-pit copper mine in Canada, and the largest employer in BC’s massive Cariboo region. 18 The Globe winter 2015 Ledcor mobilized to the Gibraltar mine in late 2013 in preparation for the 20 month contract. In May of 2014, Ledcor was further awarded a scope of work to expand a subsequent phase of the Gibraltar mine. This includes mine development and pioneering activities to move an additional 11 million tons of waste rock over a six-month period. Infrastructure HIGHWAY 63 ALBERTA TRANSPORTATION FORT MCMURRAY, ALBERTA. We are continuing work on the twinning of Highway 63 from Highway 36 to Fort McMurray in northern Alberta. We are grading 26 km (16 mi) of highway, doing 37 km (22 mi) of base and paving, and constructing a steel girder bridge. Since our work began, we have negotiated two significant contract extensions: one for borrow-pit clearing and stripping on an adjacent Highway 63 project, and a second for the construction of a 265 m (1,200 ft) concrete box culvert. We expect to complete 6 km (4 mi) of the highway by the end of 2014 and the remainder in 2015. The Globe winter 2015 19 Infrastructure Monopole Foundation installation ALTALINK INNISFAIL, ALBERTA. Ledcor has received substantial completion certificates after an aggressive six-month schedule constructing monopole foundations for the new 500kV Western Alberta Transmission Line. Despite the wide variety of configurations — from one-pole to three-pole, including rock anchors, castin-place piles, steel-driven piles, and poured concrete foundations — we are able to carry out the project entirely 20 The Globe winter 2015 with Ledcor-owned equipment. Notably, the three-pole foundations rank among the largest in North America. With the work spread out over 12 km (7.5 mi) of farms and wetlands, our strict adherence to environmental requirements is critical on this project. Our environmental performance on the project has been matched by our safety performance, with zero safety incidents recorded to date. transportation WELCOMING 200 NEW CNG VEHICLES VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA. We recently added 200 new compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles to our fleet, creating one of the largest fleets of CNG vehicles in Canada. We’re estimating that annual fuel costs will be 30 percent lower than conventional fuels, and that the greenhouse-gas emissions will be reduced by 23 percent. The conversion also extends the life and improves the reliability of the vehicles by reducing wear on engine parts. The Ford Transit Connect cargo vans were converted by G.W. Anglin Manufacturing to CNG fuel systems from Altech-Eco, making them the first vehicles of their kind. Pioneering an entirely new vehicle type presented several challenges, including crash testing to meet Transport Canada requirements. The CNG vehicles are joining our existing fleet of 15 liquefied natural gas (LNG) trucks. To date, Ledcor has invested over $10 million in natural gas vehicles. The Globe winter 2015 21 transportation SAFE SUMMER FOR FIRE-FIGHTING HELI FLEET kamloops, british columbia. Ledcor’s Summit Helicopters had a busy summer suppressing forest fires. Our crews and 13 of our helicopters spent the summer slinging equipment, moving personnel, and fighting fire directly from the skies with helicopter buckets. Despite the challenging conditions, we flew over 1,100 hours incident-free. Our safety strategy includes a robust maintenance program and a monitoring system that guarantees continuous evaluation and improvement. The hard work and diligence of our pilots and engineers also plays a major role in our safety culture. 22 The Globe winter 2015 DAVE LEDE INDUCTED INTO BC BUSINESS HALL OF FAME VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA. The Ledcor Group of Companies Chairman and CEO, Dave Lede, has been inducted into the Business Laureates of BC Hall of Fame, an initiative created by Junior Achievement of British Columbia to honor business leaders who have made outstanding contributions to the province and to Canada.
