The restaurant chain boasts
various chicken sandwiches,

The ribbon cutting ceremony
took place at 9:00 a.m. after
several pre-celebrations during
the week, including the "First

The ribbon cutting ceremony
commenced with the Presentation of Colors by the American
Veterans State Honor Guard
(AMVETS) and the raising of
the American Flag at the Chickfil-A flag-pole. It was followed
by a brief presentation of facts
about the fast-food chain and
welcoming remarks by the
franchise owner-operator,
Carlos Mayen Solórzano and
his wife Carolina..
Present at the ribbon cutting
were Azusa Mayor Joe Rocha,
Council members Angel Carrillo
and Robert Gonzales, Azusa
Unified School Board Member

traditional ribbon cutting ceremony, a first-bite of the famous chicken sandwich by the
officials and the owner-operators, and a tour of the restaurant and the kitchen and preparation area, including its large

Donors Recognized at
Glendora Public Library
GLENDORA - The
Glendora Public Library
Friends Foundation honored
their generous donors at a reception on Friday, February 1
at the Glendora Public Library.
Special recognition was given
to Mike and Kitty Garvey and
Thom and Sheryl Hill.
Mike and Kitty Garvey have
been dedicated and energetic
supporters of the GPL Friends
Foundation. They were hosts
for the Tables of Contents
fundraiser and, with Mike's
support, Kitty spearheaded the
gala library event, Night on the
Plaza for the last twelve years.
This event has raised over $1.5
for the library's early childhood
education, book fund and adult
literacy outreach.
Both Mike and Kitty's companies, Zeta Systems and
Crestwood Communities, have
been supporters and major
sponsors of Night on the Plaza.
In addition to the Night on the
Plaza, Crestwood Communities supports the teen book
trivia competition 'Battle of the
Books' and sponsors a team
for the Great Trivia Challenge.
Kitty joined the GPL Friends
Foundation Board in 2000 and
is now an Emeritus member.
Glendora Public Library and
the GPL Friends Foundation
have benefited from Thom and
Sheryl's leadership, advocacy
and their time as volunteers
since 1992.
Thom joined the board of the
GPL Friends Foundation in
2006. Never one to sit idle, he
served as co-Vice President of
Fund Development from 20072009 and served as President
from 2009-2012. He is currently serving on the Board as
Secretary.
Thom might be the one attending the meetings, but
Sheryl is constantly beside
him.

Hill
Sheryl has supported Night
on the Plaza through hours of
pounding the pavement and
asking for donations as well as
donating their famous "Hill's
Dills" to this successful
fundraiser.
Throughout the year, Thom
and Sheryl compile and validate
questions for the Great Trivia
Challenge. Thom 'Mr. Trivia'
has served as Master of Ceremonies since its inception
twenty-one years ago. This
annual fundraiser raises
money to fund the library's
adult literacy program,
Glendora READS!. As
Glendora residents, Thom and
Sheryl understood the impor-
tance of providing this free library service to the Glendora
community - teaching adults to
read. To date, over 700 adults
have benefited and have become productive, confident,
contributing residents.
As one of the founding committee members for the 'Battle
of the Books', Thom continues
to be involved after 5 years.
Thom and Sheryl's support has
helped a program that encourages and excites teens to read.
The Glendora Public Library
is extremely grateful to the
Garvey's and the Hill's for their
tireless dedication to making
Glendora a better community
in which to live.

“Our race circuit will feature
something extra this year as we
will be hosting the first-ever
night racing in the Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge on
Friday and Saturday,” said
Michaelian. “Along with the six
other racing events here in
April, this should make for one
of the most entertaining weekends in our history.”

during race weekend.
“It’s three days of great parties and great racing,” said Foster. “The Grand Prix brings a
lot of people to Long Beach. Our
hotels get filled up, our restaurants get filled up and people
understand that Long Beach is
a really a great city, a great place
to have a good time.”
More than 30,000 working
hours will be spent installing the
blocks, three miles of fencing
and 16,000 bolted-together tires,
along with 16 huge spectator
grandstands, seven pedestrian
bridges and giant-vision boards
for full-circuit TV coverage.
The heavy-duty blocks and
fencing, however, are merely a
start.
“Leading up to race weekend,
our staff will also install hospitality suites, tents, electrical
equipment, phones, porta-johns,
trash containers and a hundred
other little things up until race
weekend,” said Dwight Tanaka,
director of operations for the
Grand Prix Association. “Then,
when the last checkered flag falls
on Sunday night, we start to
take everything down, inspect
it and get ready for next year.”
All businesses along the race
circuit, which includes Shoreline Drive, Aquarium Way and
Pine Ave., will remain open during construction of the racetrack.
The 2013 Toyota Grand Prix
of Long Beach will feature rac-

BEVERLY HILLS - The
Beautiful mansion on Rexford
Drive in Beverly Hills was the
venue of a grand party of over
one thousand city officials,
businessmen, movie producers,
directors and actors. Celebrities and diplomats walked on
the red carpet while an army
of photographers took shots of
those in black tie and the
women in long, flowing gowns.
The home belonging to Daphna
Ziman, founder of Children
Uniting Nations, was open to
a hand picked crowd. A huge
tent was set up in the garden,
glittering with thousands of
lights.
The invitees watched the
Oscar Ceremony live from the
ten large screen televisions positioned all around the tent.
Refreshments including champagne and tequila were available. A full dinner and desert
was served. Dennis Quaid and
the Sharks played some great
rock 'n roll songs, including the
one he sang in the movie "great
balls of fire", when he played
Jerry Lee Lewis.
Children Uniting Nations is
an organization that helps
needy and at-risk children,
most of whom are in foster
homes. There was a silent
auction of celebrity memorabilia, which raised funds for the
charity. Philanthropist Danny
Alpert bought a shirt signed by
the soccer star Pele for $500
and gifted it to a nine year old
boy, who was present.

Former U.S. Poet Laureate to
Speak at Azusa Pacific University
AZUSA — APU’s Center for
Research on Ethics and Values
(CREV) and the Department of
English welcome Robert
Pinsky, Ph.D., former United
States Poet Laureate and internationally recognized author, to
present a sampling of his powerful, innovative poems. This
free event is open to the public
and will take place in APU’s
Upper Turner Campus Center,
located on APU’s East Campus,
at 901 E. Alosta Ave., in Azusa,
on Tues., March 5, from 7–8
p.m.
Pinsky served as the United
States Poet Laureate, the
nation’s official poet, for an
unprecedented three terms
(1997–2000), during which he
became one of America’s most
beloved poets and raised the
national appreciation of poetry.
In 1997, he founded the Favorite Poem Project, an initiative
inviting thousands of Americans
from varying ages and backgrounds to share their favorite
poems and reinforce the value
of poetry in American culture.
“Poetry gives tremendous pleasure; it brings a physical sensation of saying something that
feels right,” said Pinsky.
In his poetry, Pinsky explores
new territories of language usage and employs moving, energetic rhythms. His poetry collection The Figured Wheel:
New and Collected Poems
1966–96 received numerous
awards and a Pulitzer Prize
nomination.He also published
groundbreaking volumes on
poetry as an art form, The
Sounds of Poetry and Poetry
and the World, which received
a National Book Critics’ Circle
Award nomination. A graduate
professor at Boston University,
Robert Pinsky, Ph.D., former United States Poet Laureate
Pinsky frequently writes for
prestigious publications such as
The New Yorker, The Atlantic
Monthly, American Poetry Review, and The Best American
Poetry anthologies.
“Poetry shows that language
is more than just words, but an
art form that calls us to pay
closer attention to the world,”
said Mark Eaton, Ph.D., professor in the Department of English
and director of CREV. “It also
helps students understand the
magnificent beauty and power
of language. Through poetry,
we gain a better appreciation for
one of God’s greatest gifts: the
ability to artfully describe His
creation and communicate essential truths about the human
experience.”
The James L. Hedges Distinguished Lecture Series exists to
celebrate the written word
through a series of endowed
lectures by writers and literary
critics of national stature who
imaginatively explore the world
through their creative use of language and literary forms.

Glendora Library Employees Honored
Customer Service is important at the Glendora Public Library. Every year our library
recognizes one staff member
who has gone above and beyond in delivering Platinum
Customer Service. Community
members, city and library staff
write notes of commendation
throughout the year when they
receive or witness excellent
customer service. These commendations are read at our
staff meeting each month and
recognition given to the top library employee. At the beginning of the new calendar year,
the person that has received
the highest number of commendations for the past year
is honored at a staff gathering.
Their name goes on a perpetual
trophy and they get a special
letter of thanks. The following
year, when a new recipient is
identified, the previous year's
recipient, who now has to pass
