Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC) turns 3!!! In the last three years we have produced one DPAC Arts Festival, two seasons of Dancer’s Training Programme, three editions of d’MOTION International Dance Festival, four seasons of d’Next Artist Project, six D for Dancing performances, fourteen outreach educational programmes and seventy-two workshops. In order to support the growth of the local performing arts industry, DPAC has fully and partially sponsored thirty local productions to stage their performances at DPAC under the Venue Sponsorship Programme 2015-16. This year, I am proud to announce the return of DPAC Arts Festival (DAF) for the second time. The DAF 2016 is based on “Inspirational Classics, Then and Now”. Captivating the inspiration of classic creations, DAF invites Malaysian artists who are INSPIRED by CLASSICS, to visualise the world of classics and create a contemporary performance on THEN AND NOW. DAF is interested in the encounters which are the hybrid between literature and performing arts, classic and contemporary, Western and Asian, fundamentally the arts and culture. For this year’s edition, we are grateful to present the following programmes: two music, two theatre, two dance, one workshop performance and one exhibition. You will see a Shakespeare-inspired play, an art song and ballet performance; a site-specific dance and a music performance by Western and Asian artists; inter-disciplinarily performances which 2 fuse performance art with other art forms; a local arts institution exhibiting a new generation of visual artworks; artistic exchanges between theatre companies and dance cultures. And for the first time, we welcome our international guest - The Nonsensemakers from Hong Kong to present a heartwarming performance, Travel With Mom. I would like to sincerely express my gratitude to the presenters of DAF 2016: Dasein Academy of Art (Fine Art Department), DPAC Dance Company, Goh Lee Kwang, Hands Percussion, KL Shakespeare Players, MyDance Alliance, The Song Weavers, and theatrethreesixty who have come on board. We extend our deepest appreciation to all our sponsors and the volunteers who share our passion in arts, not forgetting the audiences whose continuous support has made this festival possible. I look forward to seeing you at the festival. Join me and discover art in and around DPAC. Warm wishes, DPAC Arts Festival (DAF), DPAC's biennial festival, captures the essence of locally-born works which make Malaysia well-known as the melting pot of cultures. The Festival’s collaborative projects cultivate and co-present local artworks that can galvanise the young and old. We believe that arts should enrich and enliven the lives of all, whether creating or viewing. Besides, it wants arts to be easily accessible for artists and audiences to appreciate, enjoy and interact with one another. This year, with great pleasure, we introduce to you The Nonsensemakers from Hong Kong in a masked theatre play of the virtues of filial piety, Travel With Mom, based on a true story and accompanied by folksy live music. You will also see the nation’s prominent arts practitioners from diverse practices such as the renowned percussion team, Hands Percussion, in collaboration with French artists perform their latest work Opium, The Song Weavers led by Ang Mei Foong takes you to the world of Art Songs with guest appearances by ballet dancers from Dance Space Academy, theatrethreesixty in partnership with the KL Shakespeare Players presents the most “relevant of Shakespeare’s plays for the modern era”, Titus Andronicus, and a 21st century experimental music workshop performance led by Goh Lee Kwang. Next, the collaboration of Goethe-Institut Malaysia and DPAC Dance Company presents a new dual-contemporary dance by German choreographer, Ben J. Riepe and DDC’s Artistic Director, Wong Jyh Shyong. In addition to all the excitement, a wonderful surprise awaits you! A general brings home his dead sons and the spoils of a ten-year war. This is the price of war for Titus Andronicus – the great victorious Roman general of the Roman Empire. Amongst the spoils are Tamora, Queen of the Goths and her son, from whom Titus will extract his retribution. This act of tradition breeds a requital that will shake the foundations of Rome. Titus Andronicus is a violent look at the price of loyalty – where atrocities are considered sacrifices, and revenge is a zero-sum game where no one wins in the end. It asks difficult questions about the nature of complicity – where the conscience ends and the rule of law prevails. T HE ATR E TRAVEL WITH MOM PRESENTED BY THE NONSENSEMAKERS “THIS INTIMATE SHOW IS IRRESISTIBLY HEARTWARMING.” CORRIE TAN, THE STRAITS TIMES (SINGAPORE) Travel with Mom is beautifully told through a masked theatre play on the virtues of filial piety accompanied by folksy live music and inspired by the touching story of Wang Yi-Min who spent all his life with his mother in a village in Liaoning, China. The 74-year-old man takes his 99-year-old mother on a journey across China. Starting in Heilongjiang, they set off for Tibet on a 900-day journey that spans over 30,000 kilometres. His mother, who had toiled her entire life for her family, has never travelled out of her rural hometown. The man is determined to fulfil his mum’s wish to see the beauty of the world while she still can. Together, they travel on a rickety tricycle, pedalling through rural villages and fast-paced cities, valleys and over hills. As they ride on, he discovers that staying by his mum’s side is the greatest reward he can give to both of them. The participants, regardless of their arts backgrounds, will be given about a 6-hour lecture on 21st century experimental music covering field recording, electronic music and improvisation. Subsequently, the participants will come up with a collective piece for the performance, using whatever art forms (dance, video, music, spoken words, etc) that they are good at or are comfortable with.
