HISTORY
NEWPORT: A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE, WORK AND PLAY!
You can get all the details of Newport’s
history on an entertaining tour of the city.
N
ewport has advanced a long way
from its rough and rowdy past.
Gone are the gambling halls of
yesteryear, replaced by some of the best attractions in the Northern Kentucky/Greater
Cincinnati region.
Newport, founded in 1795 by General
James Taylor, Sr., still gives a nod to its past
as the Las Vegas of the Midwest during the
middle of the 20th century. You can get
the inside scoop and see all the sites while
walking the entertaining Newport Gangster
Tour by American Legacy Tours.
When Newport on the Levee, a megaentertainment playground, opened in 2001,
it signaled a new day for Newport. Today,
the Levee attracts approximately four million visitors annually. But before the Levee
was even a dream, the Newport Shopping
Center paved the way for it and much more
city development as the first shopping plaza
of its kind in 1953. The complex at Carothers
Road and Monmouth Street continues today
as a premium outlet for shoppers.
Many unique cafés, restaurants and
shops can be found within the 3.5 square
miles of Newport. The riverfront is home to
many popular festivals each year, including
Italianfest (June), Motorcycle Rally (July),
Queen City Sausage Festival (July), Glier’s
Goettafest (Aug. 5-7), the Great Inland Seafood Festival (Aug. 11-14), Riverfest (Sept. 4)
and Oktoberfest (Sept. 23-25).
On the business front, the city has become
a hotbed for the tech industry as more than
10 companies have opened in the past five
years.
In May 2011, Meaningful Use Technologies and Korean-based Arcron Systems
Inc. announced each would establish U.S.
headquarters in Newport. The IT companies
together will create 20 new jobs and invest
a total of more than $1 million in Northern
Kentucky.
Overall, there are approximately 600 businesses employing 6,500 people in Newport,
which, according to the 2010 census, has
15,273 residents.
And Newport is bike friendly, with scheduled rides, via Reser Bicycle Outfitters,
throughout the area.
So whether you’re looking for a place to
live, work or play, Newport has it all.

Newport also offers live theatrical productions at the Stained Glass Theatre and

community theater group, performing in
the area for more than 40 seasons. Monmouth Theatre, home of Falcon Productions, offers live eclectic entertainment,
