PARKING LOT SAFETY- Parent Drop off and Pick-up
Dear Alki Families:
In order to minimize hazards to students we are asking drivers to follow these procedures
to ensure a safe pick up and drop off in the Alki parking lot:







Pick up time in the afternoon is 3:30-3:40
Please only travel east to west in the driveway when picking up and dropping off, then
turn left to head south toward the exit, avoiding the first aisle.
Pull as far forward as possible and continue doing so as cars pull out. We will be asking
students to wait further west on the sidewalk rather than in front of the office.
Form ONE line next to the curb when waiting in your car. Do not stop in the middle of
the driveway to pick up or drop off your student.
Remain in your car unless you are parked in a parking space
Please find a parking space if there is no room along the curb. Students will be asked to
use the cross walks to get to the parking area.
Do not park or stop your car in front of any ORANGE CONES.

Alki Attendance Q and A’s
Q: At the beginning of the school day, when is my student considered tardy?
A: The first bell rings at 8:55 and the tardy bell rings at 9:00. Any student arriving after
9:00 will be noted in the student’s attendance as a tardy. Alki’s school hours are 9:003:30.
Q: When do the automated attendance calls go out to parents?
A: The automated calls (“robo calls”) start going out 45 minutes after the start of the
school day for any unexcused students. If the absence isn’t excused by the end of the
school day an additional call will go out in the evening.
Q: When does the first attendance letter get generated and sent home?
A: Anytime a student has 2 unexcused absences in a school year the attendance letter is
generated.
REMINDER—POLICY FOR DROPPED OFF ITEMS
Parents, in order to prevent classroom disturbances, we are no longer calling
the classroom for your student to come to the office for items that have been
dropped off. We do one call down via the intercom right before first lunch—
10:40 am for any items that you may bring to the office - this includes iPads.
We do one more call down at the end of the day for any items or messages
that your student may need for the end of the day. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding.

Please join us in the Skyview Auditorium on February 9th at 7pm
for the ALL-DISTRICT CHORAL INVITATIONAL CONCERT. This
concert will feature a choir from each middle school and high
school in Vancouver Public Schools and will end with a grand
finale in which all the students combine and sing together. The
event is free and open to the public.
BEFORE SCHOOL BUILDING USE
Alki provides supervision for it’s students in the Commons (our lunch
room) from 8:30 am —8:55 am each morning. Students should enter
through the Commons doors. Students are also welcome to be outside
the front of the school where supervision is provided at this time as
well. Students are only allowed in the Commons before 8:55 unless
they have made prior arrangements with a teacher.

The Washington State Board of Health recently changed the varicella vaccine (chicken pox) school requirement. Prior to starting the 2016-2017 school year, all students including high school students are required by law to do one of the following:
Receive two doses of varicella vaccine, OR
Provide proof of immunity by blood test, OR
Obtain verification of history of chickenpox disease from your child’s licensed health care provider, OR
Obtain a Certificate of Exemption from your healthcare provider
Due to the change in the law, we can no longer accept parent verification of disease.

Kudos To the Alki Community— The Annual Sharing and
Caring Project is Another Huge Success!
The students, staff and families did another fantastic job helping
Clark County families in need and the Can food drive. (A special
thanks to Deanne Warren and her committee for an amazing job)!
Many students earned money to buy the gift they chose to purchase.
Some used allowance, raked leaves, babysat, did extra jobs for relatives and some spent money they had received as a gift!




Over 300 gifts purchased (many shoes, coats, jeans and sweat
shirts)
38 stockings filled for all of the kids
Toiletry items for all of the families
Over 1300 cans of food for Santa's Posse
Here is just a few thank-you letters Alki received from families that
you helped support to make this project such a huge success:
“I want to say thank you so much for your help this Christmas! I can’t
even start to tell you how much it helped my family. You have touched
my heart. What a bunch of amazing kids. I hope your Christmas is
just as special as you made mine. Merry Christmas!”
“I can’t thank you enough for your generosity! You made our
Christmas. I took in 3 extra children (family) and my salary now
won’t stretch enough. The kids all needed shoes and you got them all
wonderful tennis shoes—they loved all their gifts! I wish you could

Alki’s Career Day!
How would you like to talk about your job to a class full
of middle schoolers? Alki will be having our 3 rd annual
Career Day on March 23rd and we are looking for presenters from a wide variety of career fields to come
speak. This is going to be a great opportunity for students to learn about various careers from the people
who work in them on a day to day basis. We are especially interested in having speakers in non-traditional
career settings and the skilled trades.
Students will be rotating through four different presentations of their choosing so, as a speaker, you will be
talking about what you do to a group of no more than 30
at a time during each of those four sessions. If you are
interested, or know someone who would be a good presenter, please fill out the web survey and one of the
counselors will be in touch with you to confirm your attendance.

Stand Social
A: Unfortunately, your child is probably getting this message
from several different places—and in very subtle ways. Although popular culture gives lip service to the notion that
school matters, kids often absorb the opposite message.
Here’s why:
 The media highlights unique success stories. Stories of
self- made millionaires abound. And often, the clincher is
that some of these folks abandoned school. So you can see
why your child might think, “Well, if she got rich without
studying hard, then I can, too.” This is why it’s vital to
remind her that these people are extreme exceptions to the
rule.
 Many popular TV shows and movies celebrate ignorance.
The most popular characters are often not-so-bright
“jokesters.” But if your child believes intentional ignorance
is her ticket to a bright future, she’s in for a rude awakening.
 Parents are busy. Do you groan about your child’s school
projects? Are you too busy to look over homework? The
message your child is getting may not be the one you
intend to send.
Show your child that school is a priority by asking about
school every day. Let her know that her best chance at a
happy and successful life is to take school seriously.

School Closure Information
Please be prepared for school closures due to bad weather or other emergency situations. Depending on
the circumstances, schools could be closed for one day or several days. Schools could open two hours later
than usual or close earlier than scheduled.
To find out if schools are closed:
• Check “Emergency Closure Information” on the district website: www.vansd.org.
• Check the Flash Alert website: www.flashalert.net (select Portland/Vancouver area, then Clark County
Schools, then Vancouver School District).
• Sign up for free FlashAlert text and/or email messages. You must renew this service each year. Both
websites listed above will take you to the Emergency Messages page for Van-couver School District. Find
“Emergency Alerts,” click “Subscribe” and follow directions.
• Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to see our school closure posts: www.facebook.com/
VancouverPublicSchools and https://twitter.com/VancouverSD.
 Listen to your local radio and television stations.
 Call the School Closure Information Line at 313-1401.
If schools are closed, the main school phone numbers will allow you to connect to the School Closure Information Line.
The decision to close or delay the opening of school due to snow or icy roads usually is made early in the
morning of that school day. If weather becomes threatening during the school day, schools may close
early. If schools are closed, all after-school and evening school activities are canceled for that day.
Snow/ice routes may be used for some school bus routes. Families that would be impacted by altered bus
routes will receive letters with detailed bus stop information. Snow/ice route information also will be sent
to the schools affected and posted on school websites.
Schools in Washington State must, by law, provide 180 days of instruction each year. These days have
been designated as make-up days in case scheduled school days are canceled: June 17, 18, 19, and
January 28, 2015. If school must be closed more than four days, additional make-up days may be
added.

2016-2017 IN-DISTRICT BOUNDARY REQUESTS
Transfer forms for in-district boundary exceptions are available at the school office beginning January 11th.
Any student currently attending a Vancouver Public School on an in-district boundary must reapply for the
following school year.
Request the in-district student transfer from the resident school. Complete the form and return it to the resident
school by the deadline.
1. The school staff will record the date and time on the application form when it is received by the school.
2. The resident school principal will release the student and forward the form to the principal at the requested
school.
3. The principal at the requested school will accept the transfer or deny it and mark the reason for denial.
4. The requested school will send copies of the form to the appropriate persons or schools.
For eighth-grade students who want to attend a high school other than their resident high school, the process is:
Request the in-district student transfer form from the current middle school. Complete the form and return it to the
current middle school by the deadline.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES—ONE HOUR EARLY RELEASE DAYS
One hour early release days for Professional Learning Communities work will generally be held twice
each month. PLC’s began in Vancouver Public Schools four years ago. Research shows significant
learning gains may be achieved through teacher teams discussing lessons and standards, developing
common assessments and reviewing the results together. This allows staff to create interventions and
enrichment opportunities that better serve the individual learning needs of our students.

ATHLETIC CLEARANCE PROCESS
Students need to complete the Athletic Clearance Packet before being eligible to participate in a sport.
Packets are available at the Business Office or on-line at vansd.org. Please be sure your student’s physical
is current (good for two years from date of exam). All forms must be complete with parent/student signatures before they are eligible. Fees required include the $10 ASB Card fee as well as $20 for every sport
that your student plays. Students who have done Football, Cross Country or Volleyball THIS school year
will need to complete the Repeat Clearance Packet.
ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY
Vancouver Public Middle Schools are now part of the WIAA (Washington Interscholastic
Activities Association), and as a result, athletes who are not academically eligible at the
end of a grading period will automatically have to sit out the first three weeks of
the new grading period. This means that an athlete going out for football or volleyball who
failed more than one class in the spring will not be eligible to play in games/contests until the
fourth week of school. All athletes will still have to show they are passing the minimum
number of classes before they can play in games/contests. We conduct grade checks on a
regular basis for every sport throughout the year. Please contact Sean Ryan at 313-3207 if

Young Champions Student Heart Screening
*Recommended $25 donation. Young Champions screenings are available any weekday by appointment at PeaceHealth Southwest at the cost of $50
Community based heart screenings for Clark County and Portland Metro area students, sponsored by
the Quinn Driscoll Foundation and Peace Health Southwest Heart and Vascular.
The Quinn Driscoll Foundation is named for 13-year-old Quinn Driscoll, a student athlete at Wy’ East
Middle School who died in 2009 after suffering sudden cardiac arrest while running on the track during gym class.
Quinn had undiagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), a serious heart condition that is one the
leading causes of sudden cardiac death in young athletes.
Sudden cardiac arrest occurs every 3 days in a public school, occurring often without symptoms. Have
your child screened today!

ALKI MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
It’s time to turn in your Box Tops!
Hello Parents! Alki Middle School receives two checks from Box Tops for Education
program each school year. If you turn in your Box Tops before March 1, 2016 you can
help boost the amount of the first check we receive in April. Our goal this year is
$1000.00. You can help us reach that goal and make our yearly earnings check big by
sending in your Box Tops this month.
Bundle all your Box Tops and send them in before the March deadline. Once we send
in all our Box Tops, Alki Middle School will receive a check from Box Tops for Education in April and can use this cash to buy the things we need. If you have any questions,
