Getting around in Paris & its suburbs ASP PFA Living Skills Seminar – September 3, 2015 Public Transports • Making sense of all these: – Trains de banlieues (Commuter trains) – Grandes lignes (Main lines trains) – Metro – RER – SNCF / Transilien – RATP – Tram – Bus Paris RER (Réseau Express Régional) • 5 express train lines connecting Paris city center to surrounding suburbs – RER A, RER B, RER C, RER D, RER E • In Paris, the RER acts as an express underground or subway train • Beyond Paris Center, the RER is a ground level commuter train connecting popular destination (CDG, Orly, Disneyland, Versailles) to the heart of Paris Paris RER Metro • Subway • 300 stations • 16 lines: • M1 – M14, M3bis, M7bis, color coded • Covering the 10x10km area of Central Paris • Interesting fact: • Châtelet-Les Halles, with 5 Metro lines and 3 RER commuter rail lines is the world’s largest metro (subway) station Metro Tram & Buses • Tram – 9 lines T1 – T8 (counting T3a & T3b as separate lines) • Buses – #460 & #467 will get you to school – Noctilien (night buses) • With 47 bus routes, the Noctilien service runs through the night throughout Paris and greater Paris from 0.30am to 5.30am • The network has over 2,000 stops, ensuring proximity service to more than 200 towns in the greater Paris area How to Ride • Single Use Tickets • Visiting Paris • Navigo • Day Tickets RATP Quick Guide RATP Quick Guide Still confused? • Paris Metro vs. RER – What’s the difference? • • • The Metro is a classic subway system: mostly underground, many stops, frequent service, short line distances, serving the urban city centre, nonscheduled train timings. The RER (Réseau Express Régional) is a commuter train system that covers much of the greater metropolitan area of Paris (Ile-de-France), much further out that covered by the Metro The confusing part is that the RER traverses central Paris with a handful of stations, acting like an express Metro system with fewer stops, larger trains and faster movement Paris fare zones apply to the RER train system, unlike the Metro and there are five of them. Using a Metro ticket, the Ticket t+, is permitted on the RER, but only to the limits of Zone 1, the true center of Paris, bordered by the ring road surrounding it, the Boulevard Peripherique RATP & SNCF • RATP (Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens) – Paris public transport authority – Metro, RER, Tram • SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer) – French National Rail – Transilien More information • Last train from La Defense around midnight, often earlier • First Metro at 5:30 am at the beginning of each line • Last Metro at 1:15 am (2:15am on Friday and Saturday nights) at the end of the line • Useful tip for late return: Metro 10 across the bridge in Saint Cloud Useful Links • • • • • parisbytrain.com transilien.com ratp.fr aparisguide.com Google maps Useful Apps Taxis • Taxis in Paris have lights on their roofs that indicate whether they are available. If the light is green the taxi is available, if the light is red the taxi is occupied. • The minimum fare for a journey is 6.60 euros, supplement included. A fourth passenger can be taken (supplement of 3 euros). Taxis • All Parisian taxis must have : • An electronic time and date display showing the time the driver finishes working and the day of the year*, which is either fixed on the rear window shelf (on the right-hand-side of the vehicle, visible from outside), or integrated into the taximeter. • An illuminated TAXI roof sign with 3 small lights underneath indicating the tariffs A, B and C. • Inside the vehicle, a taximeter showing the rate applied and the amount of the fare. Taxis • All Parisian taxis must have : • A small notice displayed on the left-hand-side rear window of the taxi with an extract of the regulations, tariffs applicable and the registration number of the vehicle. • A black plate on the front right wing of the vehicle with the mention PARIS and the parking permit number. Taxis & Private Driver Services • Popular taxis in the area: – G7, Taxis bleus,Taxis 75 • Professional Limousine Services – UberX, LeCab • Useful Apps: If You Prefer Driving… Good to know! • Leave enough space for those motorcycles and scooters • “Priorité à droite” (Right Hand Priority) • Carrefour Giratoire (Roundabout) vs Rond Point (Roundabout)!!! • Look at the ground! “Priorité à droite”(Right Hand Priority) • Can be indicated but not necessary • Usually in villages and towns unless otherwise advertised • When no signposts or indications on the ground Carrefour Giratoire (Roundabout) vs Rond Point (Roundabout)!!! • Carrefour Giratoire – Yield sign going in – Priority to the car already in the roundabout – When in the intersection, no need to slow down or look at incoming traffic – If more than one lane in the round about: • Signal change of lanes • Don’t have the priority changing lane even to exit Carrefour Giratoire (Roundabout) vs Rond-Point (Roundabout)!!! • Rond-Point – Usually found in a village or a town – Priority to the car merging from the right – Tend to be replaced by the carrefour giratoire – Not many left (Place Charles-de-Gaulle “Place de l’Étoile”) Questions? • Presentation will be available on the ASP website
