Below are some suggested hotels but it is worth noting that the tournament location
is not particularly close to either school and you may wish to take the opportunity
to stay closer to the centre of Paris and enjoy all that the city has to offer. It will be
as quick, if not quicker to reach the location from a more central position. I would
suggest that you avoid booking a hotel in the immediate vicinity of the tournament
location as it is very residential.

METRO
The metro is the most efficient way to travel in Paris
and is easy to learn. When using the metro, you will
need to look for the stop you want, the number of the
metro line that will get you there, and the name of the
last stop on that line that goes in the direction you are
headed. There is always a large map in every metro
station for you to use to determine your route. The
first train is at about 5:30 am. The last train is around
12:30 am. All metro stations and cars are nonsmoking
areas and this rule is sometimes enforced.
One ticket is used for any one-way trip, regardless
of the number of the metro transfers you make. To
enter, you must insert your ticket into the machines
with turnstiles and keep your ticket until you get out
of the metro station, beyond the sign that says limite
de validie de billett. On occasion, you will be required
to reinsert your ticked at a turnstile for exiting the
station. If you are using a Carte Hebdomadaire
or a visitor pass (see Transportation Tickets and
Passes section), the turnstile will return your ticket.
Otherwise, it may keep it. Even if not required,
continue to hold onto your ticket. On occasion RATP
controleurs (conductors) patrol the cars and request
to see passenger tickets. On-the-spot fines are
imposed if you do not have a ticket or your ticket is
invalid.
The tournament location is well served by public
transport with RER, Metro and Tram lines all stopping
close to the location :
RER line C – closest stops ‘Les Gresillons’ and
‘Gennevilliers’
Metro Line 13 – closest stops ‘Les Agnettes’ and
‘Gabriel Peri Asnieres-Gennevilliers’
It is important to note that most metro doors do not
open automatically. To exit or enter a metro car, lift
the lever up and to the right or press the button for
entrance. Also, there are special seats on the metro,
bus and RER trains that are reserved for people with
special needs including parents with young children.
These seats are marked with a heart sign above them.
If you need to change metros in your travels, look for
the orange correspondent signs which will direct you
to other metros. Should you desire to exit, look for
the blue sortie signs on the platform and in walkways.
Note that some exit doorways from the metros don’t
automatically open until the passenger walks onto the
black rubber mat as one approaches the exit gate.
RER
Reseau Express Regional (RER) has 5 lines (A, B,
C, D and E) traversing Paris. RER carriages may
be double-decker. Before boarding your train, be
sure that your destination appears on the list of
stations, gares desservies, that hangs above the quai
(platform), and that the bullet next to your destination
is lit up. If it’s not, you’ll have to wait for another train.
During non-rush hours, the RER train will often be
a short (court) train of four carriages. During rush
hours, the trains will have eight carriages (long). You
will find a series of poles on the RER quais labeled one
through eight, corresponding to carriage lengths. To
board a court train, stand between poles 1 and 4, or
you will have to run to the train when it stops. The
same tickets used for the metro can be used on the
RER within urban Paris. This does not include La
Defense.
BUSES
There are over 60 bus lines reaching into every part
of Paris. Bus service operates from 7 am (or earlier)
to 8:30 p.m. On many lines, a night service operates
from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Sunday, holiday and
evening services on some bus lines are reduced or
not available. Service non assure dimanches et fetes
means that service is not available on Sundays and
holidays. Service assure en soiree means service is
available at night.
Bus shelters are designated by a pole with bus
numbers. There are maps displaying the bus route
and times (for evening buses). Be sure to check the
route information to verify that the bus you’re waiting
for is heading in the direction you wish to go.
The bus number and final stop (terminus) is displayed
above the front windshield. Sometimes, buses must
be flagged down. This is especially true at stops that
are served by multiple bus lines. Simply stretch out
your arm as a signal to the driver that you’d like him
or her to stop. On the longer accordion-style buses,
you may enter at the middle or end of the bus by
pressing the Ouvrir Porte button to the right of the
door. Cancel your tickets with the canceling machine
inside the bus and keep your canceled ticket with
you until you get off. This is not necessary if you are
traveling with a Carte Hebdomadaire. If you’re using
a Carte Hebdomadaire, you can simply show the pass
to the driver should you enter at the front of the bus.
Buses, unlike metros, do not stop at each point on
the line. On some buses, drivers play a recorded
tape announcing the name of the bus stops. You can
also refer to the maps displayed in the bus. As you
approach your desired stop, push the red button on
the poles in the bus called “arrette demande” to alert
the driver that you desire to get off. If you are in an
accordion like bus, you may be required to press a
button near the door to open the doors to exit the bus.
METRO, BUS AND RER TICKETS
The metro, buses and the RER use the same tickets
(billets) within the city. Tickets can be purchased at
metro station ticket booths, automatic distribution
machines in metro stations and at tobacco shops
known as tabacs displaying the RATP sign. Tickets
are less expensive when bought in tens (un carnet de
billets). Children under four years of age travel free.
Tickets are half price for children ages four to ten.
Request “tariff reduit” fares should you have younger
set passengers with you.
Families coming to the ISST event for the full five
days of watching the event plus touring Paris, would
be advantaged by purchasing the weekly Carte
Hebdomadaire which is valid from Monday to Sunday
and can be purchased on Monday to Wednesday
for the current week. It looks the same as a regular
metro ticket so take extra care when using it. If
staying in Paris, you will need to purchase the Carte
Hebdomadaire for zones 1, 2 and 3 which will provide
you with easy access for metros and buses from
Paris to Saint-Cloud. As mentioned above, the Carte
Hebdomadaire pass is returned when inserted into a
metro or RER turnstile. Do not insert the ticket pass
into a bus or SNCF ticket machine.
Another option for those who plan on doing extensive
touring in Paris along with taking advantage of being
a spectator for the ISST might be to purchase the
tourist pass or Carte Paris Visite which provides a
first class option to explore Paris over a choice of one,
two, three, or five consecutive days. It can be used
on the metro and the RER just like a regular zone 1
and 2 metro ticket. If planning on using this to travel
to Saint-Cloud, request a zone 1,2 and 3 ticket. You
can also get a pass that includes all services to and
from the Paris airports: Roissybus, Roissyrail, Orlybus
and Orlyrail. Carte Paris Visite holders also receive
discounts on admissions to many tourist attractions.
Carte Paris Visite can be bought at metro, RER and
SNCF stations, and both Orly and Roissy-Charles de
Gaulle airports.
SNCF TRAINS
The Societe Nationale des Chemin de Fer Francais
or SNCF is the national railway system. It is separate
from the metro and the RER, even though it operates
portions of the RER. The SNCF has trains that
serve the western suburbs or banlieue. It may be
very likely that you’ll choose to use the SNCF trains
at some point of your travel over the course of the
ISST tournament given the geographic coverage of
these lines. They leave from Gare St. Lazare in Paris,
Invalides, Montparnasse, and La Defense. SCNF
operates long distance trains that leave from six
stations (gares). Of these, the three stations below
correspond with those destinations co-located with the
teams joining the ISST tournament.
Paris Nord, Paris 10e - Serving north of France,
England (Eurostar)**, Belgium (Thalys), Holland,
Germany, Scandinavia and Russia.
Gare St. Lazare, Paris 8e - Serving northwest of
France (Normandy) and connections to ferries to
Great Britain.
Gare L’Est, Paris 10e - Serving Eastern France,
Switzerland, Luxembourg, Germany and Austria.
Carte Hebdomadaire holders will find that their
ticket is also good on SNCF trains. Do not validate
these in the machine. Just have it available to show
the controller if necessary. Before you board the
train, you must validate your green ticket (not a Carte
Hebdomadaire ) at a composteur or risk being fined
should conductors conduct an examination. Look for
an orange (sometimes yellow) machine about the size
of a letterbox. Slide your ticket onto the metal slot,
wait until you hear a click and then take your ticket
out. Be mindful to note the time of your last train
home. And finally, although it is more convenient to
purchase round-trip (aller-retour) tickets, there is no
price reduction. Aller-retour tickets include one metro
ride.
** One can order Eurostar tickets to London on
the phone should you be in Paris and need to order
Eurostar tickets for your trip home to London.
