The Heritage Village invites you to
visit a rural scene of bygone days.
It is a versatile tourist centre on
the Marttinen island, focusing on
agricultural and forestry traditions.
The Heritage Village contains the
Art House (Taidetalo), Marttinen
chapel, 4H Club Room, a nature
trail, children’s playground and
beach, and much more: exhibitions
and demonstrations of work and
events, guided tours and programme
services, craft shops and workshops,
horses and other animals.

Herraskoski Canal
The canal runs alongside the
Heritage Village. It was built
1903-1907. The canal links the Lake
Näsijärvi waterway to Lake Toisvesi.
The canal is 960 m long and it is
edged by handsome Siberian fir trees.
The Canal Museum is nearby.
Toriseva ravine lakes
and nature trail
There are three ravine lakes: Lower,
Middle and Upper Toriseva. The
lakes lie in a straight line running
northwest, in a ravine about 3 km
long. The largest is the Lower
Toriseva, which is about 50-70 metres
wide and 1,120 metres long. The
Upper Toriseva, which is somewhat
narrower than the others, is 600
metres long. Inkerinkallio is the
high crag at the southern end of the
Lower Toriseva. The scenic Torisevan
Kahvimaja café, open in the summer
season, looks over the rugged view.

Virrat Church
in 1857. The oldest of the three church
bells dates back to 1657. The church
was restored to its original state in
1967-1968 and 1993-1994.

New Cemetery Chapel
Built with Antti Hakola as master 17721774. The altar painting Christ and
Magdalen was painted by Alexandra
Frosterus-Ståltin in 1897. The altar and
christening table were designed in the
neo-classical style by Ilmari Launis and
completed in 1923-1925. The oldest
of the chandeliers in the church is the
centre one, made by Leander Helander
The focal point of the New Cemetery
is the funeral chapel designed by
Usko Nyström, built in 1902.

The Killinkoski (Pirkanmaa Village
of the Year 2005) industrial area lies
half-way between Virrat and Ähtäri,
on trunk road 68. A varied range of
museums and exhibitions: the only
tape and ribbon industry museum in
the Nordic countries; ’Camera Heaven’
– Finnish Camera Museum; an
exhibition of old voluntary fire service
appliances; an exhibition by Tenhola
Photographers; a collection of old
educational materials. Killin Kalleria
art gallery and Marjaliisa Pitkäranta’s
summer studio; Linda Peltola’s art
exhibition in the Fairy Cabin. A

For those perished in the rest home
fire in Jäähdyspohja.
Martti Kitunen Memorial
Situated in the Vironkoski rest area,
on highway 23 about 15 km from the
centre towards Keuruu.
Martti Kitunen’s gravestone, as well
as the Freedom Fighters’ Memorial,
is in the old churchyard in the town
centre.

Memorial to those who fought on
the front in 1939-45 and those who
laboured at home, in the military
cemetery area.

erected in Ohtola by War Veterans
– ”Brothers, bring a drop of water”.
It reminds subsequent generations
of the austere times of our wars, and
the readiness to sacrifice of the ’Oak
Leaf’ generation. The memorial
was designed by a war veteran
from Virrat, Major Erkki Lahti, and
a disabled veteran from Lammi,
Agronomist Kaarlo J. Laaksonen.

This is the start of our traditional declaration
of Midsummer, with which Virrat greets all
who have come to celebrate the festival of
high summer on Midsummer’s Eve. Among
those gathered in the Virrat Heritage Village
are local choirs and folk-dancers to lead the
spectators into the atmosphere of the summer
festival.
