Turn off Highway No. 8 and you’ll find our lovely village. Even the village centre has preserved its countryside feel, with its open fields and original winding
lanes lined with traditional wooden houses. A couple
of kilometres down the road you can stop for coffee
or lunch and admire the traditional Finnish country
houses, handsome sandstone church and beautiful,

The year- round Thursday afternoon
market - also open on summer Saturdays
– is abuzz with stallholders selling anything from fresh fish to summer flowers
and plants to cured meats to handicraft
products. Stay awhile longer and drive or
ride down to the seaside.
Church, fields, forest and sea…
Luvia has it all
Luvia gets its first mention
in the history book of 1420,
when the people of Luvia
were given rights to the waters and farmland. Asutusta

sea has always been of great
significance. Fishing brought
extra income and food; shipbuilding brought with it a
means of transport, not only
for the people of the village,
but also for the townspeople
of the area. Hundreds of
ships have been built in Luvia
over the centuries. The farmers of the village exported
their own produce – butter,
timber etc – to Sweden and
also to other European countries. Sawmills have also been
of importance. The islands in
the Luvia archipelago were
inhabited from the end of the
18th century.
Luvia has also felt the impact of war through the
ages. During the Crimean
War these waters played host
to ships of the British Navy,
whose sailors varied their diet
with the meat of the sheep
they stole from the Luvians.
During the Winter and Continuation Wars (WWII) men
and women took part in the
war both at the Front and at
home.
Luvia was part of the
parish of Eurajoki until 1901,
when the parish became
independent. The church,
built from the village’s own
red sandstone, was completed
in 1910. The beautifully-kept
graveyard is set on the nearby
hillock, which is also home to
the lovely chapel, built from
the logs of the old church.
The surrounding trees provide
a cool resting spot on the hot-
test of summer afternoons.
Luvia’s first school started
up in 1858 with the teachers
rotating between villages,
and an elementary school was
established in 1881.

As tradition demands, the
sea means everything to the
people of Luvia, which is why
we welcome visitors to enjoy
Laitakari by the sea, with its
guest harbour. There’s a lot
to Laitakari, and you can read
more in the coming pages.

Spend a week or two’s holiday in Luvia – or even the
whole summer. You’re sure to have a great time. We
have no hotels yet, but you can rent a cottage either
on the mainland or on the islands. Laitakari has a guest
harbour and services, and it’s also possible to rent a
mooring place for the whole summer.

f you like fishing, you’re sure to get a catch
in these waters. Or if you’re interested in
horseriding, the manège awaits. If you’re a
food connoisseur, you can prepare delicious
fresh fish in the garden of your holiday cottage. Or just drive down to the fisherman’s
place or to the market and get the fish fresh
from there.
Luvia is the perfect holiday place for
children. If they ever get tired of swimming
and splashing about in the water, they can
have fun climbing the trees along the shore,
go for a bike ride, play tennis at the sports
centre - and all children’s play area public
playgrounds are open for everybody’s use,
including the school yard.
And the best news for holidaymakers - it’s
a fact that we get less rain here on the Luvia
coast than inland.
In winter you can go cross-country skiing
on ready-made ski tracks around Luvia. Nordic walking can be done all year round along
the roads and pathways. There are cycle
paths in the village, but you can go off the
beaten track, take a country lane and enjoy
the sea-side ways.
Laitakari – by the sea
H
ead for Laitakari from the
church - a few kilometres
down the road and the view
opens up to the sea, glittering
like diamonds in the sunshine.
You can sunbathe on the beach,
the children can swim and splash
around safely in the water. The
terrace of the nearby restaurant,
itself almost floating on the sea,
awaits and you can enjoy a long,
cold drink or a good lunch there.
You can book the beach sauna in
advance for your private group,
and enjoy the whole evening
there. On summer Saturday
evenings the live music from
Laitakari dance hall invites you
to come dancing, just like in the
old days. On sunny winter days,
when the sea has frozen over,
you can walk or skate on the
kilometre-long sea ice track, and
enjoy a warming bowl of fish
soup afterwards.
On the shore of Laitakari a
Luvia dream is being fulfilled that is, the building of a traditional sailing ship, the galleass
“Ihana”. Visitors can see the
ship as it’s being constructed. In
fact, if you’re handy yourself,
you can volunteer to take part in
the construction work and even
maybe learn a new skill yourself.
But you don’t have to be
satisfied with just taking a look
at the sea.
You can hire boat transportation for a fishing trip or head
out for the atmospheric lighthouse island of Säppi, where
time has stood still, and the
open sea stretches out to the
horizon. To get to the top of the
lighthouse you’ll have some 130
steps to climb, but the fantastic
view over the archipelago is
worth the effort. Remember to
take your binoculars with you
for this trip, as the area is home
to many interesting species of
birds.

Luvia is the place for you. Luvia’s population of
3 300 doubles in size in the summer, and the
number of inhabitants is growing all the time.

It’s 18 km to the centre of the city of
Pori (76 000 inhabitants), the same
distance in the other direction to the
village of Eurajoki, 36 km to Olkiluoto
and 33 km to the city of Rauma (36
000 inhabitants). We have over 158
km of coastline, and hundreds of islands within our boundaries.
CHILDREN AND
YOUNG PEOPLE
As is typical in Finland, day
care for small children is wellorganised in Luvia. Its (Finnish-speaking) school provides
education (also pre-school) for
children aged 6-16 years.
The young people of Luvia
have their own youth centre,
the village has a scouts club
and the parish also runs many
youth activities. And language is no problem, as many
(monet puhuvat) speak quite
good English, at least.
HEALTH CARE
The modern health centre is
located right in the centre
of the village and provides
comprehensive health care,
laboratory- and other services.
Same-day doctor appointments are arranged on weekdays, while the emergency
clinic in Pori provides emergency first aid for injuries and
illnesses requiring immediate care during the evening,
nighttime and weekends.
THE ELDERLY
The retired and the elderly are
well catered for with plenty
of opportunities for taking
part in exercise programmes.
The pensioners’ club organises
presentations and fun excursions, and quite a few of its
members can speak foreign
languages.
Houses and plots
Luvia on asuinalueena kaunista ja
rauhallista. In Luvia we’re building
new and renovating the old. By the
sea or near the village centre, close
to the local services.
Luvia has a lot to offer if you’re thinking of relocating. You can rent or buy
a house or an apartment or build your
own house. If you’re attracted to the
sea, you also have the opportunity to
build your cottage on the coast.
If your dream is to renovate one of
the traditional old buildings, you may
have to wait a little longer, but these
do come up for sale occasionally.
SPORTS
There is something for all
ages in Luvia, where you can
take part in both indoor and
outdoor pursuits. We have
our own indoor ice rink and
football field with artificial
turf (completed in 2010). Luvia’s ringette club (LuKi) has
won the Finnish championship twice and has been in the
Finnish top three a number
of times. Winter swimming,
orienteering and the ski tracks
are maintained by sports clubs.
There’s a sailing and a motorboating club, and a manège
for horse riders. Or you may
choose to go shooting at the
shooting range.

CULTURE AND OTHER
LEISURE ACTIVITIES
Luvia’s library stocks a small
selection of Swedish- , English- and German-language
books. The choirs are happy to
receive new musical members.
In winter the drama club of
Luvia give performances of a
famous musical; the art society
is active; and the Lions Club
welcomes “brothers” from
other clubs, both Finnish and
international.
