WORSHIP ARTS
The Worship Arts major is an interdisciplinary program of the Center for Worship in the
Performing Arts, which is grounded in the study of communication and designed to
equip graduates to serve ministries as a worship developer and coordinator.
Our program is designed to:
•
Prepare students to lead and produce worship celebrations in diverse settings.
•
Prepare students to integrate basic Christian doctrine, the history and theology
of worship and administration in church and parachurch settings.
•
Encourage students to develop a sensitivity to the particular needs of their
congregations.
•
Prepare students to develop an understanding and appreciation for the
interrelationship of music, drama, and media in supporting the worship
experience.
•
Enable students to demonstrate proficiency in speech and writing as well as
use of media and programming for the performing arts in worship.
PROGRAM DISTINCTIVES
•
DARK ROOM STUDIOS,
housed in the Thompson
Center, provides ample
opportunity for students to
learn the media behind music
production and to record
their own compositions. Dark
Room Studios was created by Judson Alumnus Ben
Calhoun, the lead singer for CITIZEN WAY. Calhoun
often works with Judson students in composition
and recording classes.
The Worship Arts Program features a unique blend of theory and practice,
consisting of:
•
A core foundation in communication arts, Bible, and music.
•
A specialty concentration to provide skills in one of the major worship areas.
•
More worship-specific classes than found in any other undergraduate curriculum in the country.
•
Through internships and the chapel ministry teams, students gain ample leadership experience as early as freshman year and take
advantage of the rich diversity of the Body of Christ found in churches and worship areas in and around Chicago.
•
Students can study at the Contemporary Music Center in Nashville, Tenn.
•
Faculty members serve in local churches, sharing with students during the week what they share with their congregations
on the weekends.

the Midwest by U.S. News and World Report. A fully accredited, private Christian
university of the liberal arts, sciences and professions, Judson offers Bachelor of
Arts degrees for more than 50 majors/minors as well as adult degree programs
and graduate programs. All majors offer opportunities for students to engage in
internships, practicums, service-learning, or field experiences. Students also gain

abroad. Located just 40 minutes northwest of downtown Chicago, Judson offers
a close-knit, Christian community with the benefits of a large urban setting, ideal
for cultural activities, internships, and life after graduation.
ALUMNI & FACULTY
Matt Archibald, Worship Arts, 2004;
Director of Worship, Gurnee Community Church |
“At Judson, I was really trained to understand what it
meant to lead worship, in addition to what it meant
to be a good musician. The theology and history
we studied helped form a foundation for what it
means to be a worship leader today. The professors
who teach in the Worship Arts program all serve
in local churches in different capacities (music, art,
drama), so they bring real-world experience into
the classroom every day. On top of that, because
Judson is so close to Chicago, they regularly bring in
worship-leading professionals from all around the
city to enhance your learning. The curriculum, all
together, is like a perfect storm. They have all the
bases covered, so as a student, you never feel you’re
getting the short end of the stick.”
Mark A. Torgerson, Ph.D., Chair of
Worship Arts | “Worship is initiated by revelation
from God and invites our response to God’s activity.
Our goal at Judson University is excellence in all
dimensions of worship studies. Our Worship Arts
curriculum explores the biblical and historical roots
of worship so that we can understand more about
God, ourselves, and the world around us. The
theological insights we gain inform and inspire our
application of artistic skills to developing creative
worship expressions (spoken, sung, and performed).
Implementing leadership in on-campus and
off-campus celebrations builds experience and
confidence. Our graduates are prepared for a
lifetime of service and on-going learning.”
FINANCIAL AID
Judson offers financial aid options for 90 percent of its students. Find out just
how much value our students receive by visiting campus and meeting with
our financial aid officers, who work to help students afford a Judson education.
Scholarships for academics, and co-curricular activities, such as athletics, music,
and theatre are available to all majors.
