Here are the many upcoming events that will certainly make for a great time. Please get out your calendar and make sure to join us. Remember if you’re not on the list, they won’t let you in, so hopefully you got your reservation in by January 31. This event is lots of fun and provides old and new members a chance to mingle. Again this year, baskets of goodies will be raffled off. I’m looking for volunteers to help me put the baskets together… we can make this lots of fun so come on over and help us out. Email me if you can help ([email protected]). By the time you read this, the Snowbasin/Powder Mtn. ski trip will be a thing of the past. Forty-four lucky skiers will be on the trip. Watch for pictures and write up next month. All upcoming events will be in this issue, so please read about them and join in the fun. And get out there and ski! The Mogul • February 2010 f 5 Scholar Dollars Program The Bogus Basin Ski Club Board of Directors voted to provide help to the Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area by matching contributions from our members for the Scholar Dollars program up to $2,500. This is a great opportunity for the club and its members to share the passion we have for the sport by introducing it to a younger generation. The Scholar Dollars program has been in effect for many years and it organizes school classes from grades 3 through 12 for a night of skiing or snow boarding. Last year 3,870 students participated. Bogus Basin subsidizes the costs so that it is affordable and no youngster is turned away regardless of ability to pay. Bogus gave “scholarships” to 152 youngsters. The funds contributed by the ski club and its members will help fund this program. at our mountain while other ski areas have abandoned it. Bogus sells nearly 30,000 season passes and it takes lots of new skiers and riders to maintain that level of sales. Young skiers and riders introduce the sport to parents and siblings making it a family activity. Bogus Basin is dedicated to affordable winter recreation and this program attracts new skiers and riders leading to more season pass sales. The club’s goal is to get a contribution from at least 100 members of at least $25. For a tax deductible contribution of $25, $50 or $100, you can share the passion you have for the sport with a youngster and at the same time help keep the season passes affordable for everyone to enjoy. A $50 contribution means $100 goes to the Scholar Dollars program and four students get rental gear, a lesson, a lift ticket and transportation that otherwise would Last year the club members contributed $1,400 and the club not. What a way to compound the effect of your donation! Your matched it so at the annual meeting $2,800 was given to Bogus after tax cost will range from $33 to $43 depending on your tax Basin. Bogus gave $10,000 to “scholarships” so $2,800 was a bracket. significant contribution. You can send a check to Tyler Wymond, 2715 Crescent Rim Let’s give Bogus Basin credit and support for this endeavor. It is Drive, Boise, ID 83706 (made out to Bogus Basin) and he will one of the key reasons that the affordable season pass still exists collect them and deliver them. BBSC Members Collect Scholar Dollar Donations by Michael Bouton Bogus Basin Ski Club members helped to collect donations for the annual Scholar Dollar Campaign the weekend of January 23 and 24 at the both lodges on the mountain. Initial estimates were that the club helped put $1,500 into the fund. The club will also match what the final amount is. and match those as well. Please consider how this program may affect you and send a donation into Tyler Wymond, 2715 Crescent Rim Dr., Boise, ID 83706. You might see improvements on the mountain sooner than you think. The Scholar Dollar program aids elementary school age children to come to Bogus on their school ski night. The $25 fee that Bogus funds includes equipment rental, lift pass, lesson, and the cost of transportation. This program allows those less fortunate to afford these costs. It also introduces these children into a life time sport that will keep them coming back to Bogus for skiing or boarding. Marian Schrier Mary Naylor 1949-2009 1940-2009 Marian Eileen Schrier, age 60, passed away on December 26, 2009 at her Boise home with friends and family by her side. Marian grew up playing tennis with her twin sister, Mary Thomas, under the coaching of Barbara Chandler and their mother, Eileen, on the tennis circuits throughout the Northwest and Intermountain areas. She worked at the Bob Greenwoods Ski Haus while attending BSU. In 1971 she started helping her father, Willie, at the Stagecoach Inn. In 1971 she met Pat Howard and in 1973 they were married. They were a familiar sight on the ski slopes and at the BBSC events. Marian and her twin sister, Mary Thomas, were the driving force behind the very successful Stage Coach Inn. At Marian’s request, no formal service will be held. A memorial gathering was held at the Stagecoach Inn January 7, 2010. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humphrey’s Diabetes Center, 1226 River St, Boise, ID, 83702. f Bogus Basin Ski Club Inc. 8 Mary Margaret Naylor passed away on December 26, 2009 in McCall, Idaho. Recipient of the 2006 “Take Pride in Idaho” Award for Outstanding Achievement in Recreation and Tourism. She began teaching skiing at Bogus Basin in 1970. Mary served on the marketing team at Bogus Basin. She spent 17 years as marketing director at Brundage Mountain Resort, until her retirement in 2007. She was awarded a “Lifetime Pass” to ski on Brundage Mountain-one of just three such passes given in the history of the resort. She was one of the founders of the wildly successful and still ongoing “Prime Timers” ski programs for skiers over 50 at Bogus Basin. “Mary always looked for, and found, the good in people,” says her dear friend of many years, Bee Clark. A memorial service will be held this summer in McCall, Idaho. In preparation, stories and photographs from her friends are welcome. Richard Porter, Kevin McMichael, Michael Bouton, and Herb Malaney along with Don Anderson and his wife Debora as well as several thousand other Bronco fans made the trip to Glendale, AZ for the game of the bowl season. It was referred to as “the People’s National Championship” The parking lot was full of Orange and Blue Bronco Fans and a few Purple clad fans from Texas. It was fun meeting them and cheering on our Broncos. The bus ride home was not too bad and the driver only got lost once. Kevin McMichael, Richard Porter and Michael Bouton soak up the warm Arizona Next season we might be back at the Fiesta Bowl sun and some cold drinks in front of University of Phoenix stadium before the 2010 for the National Championship. You never know. Fiesta Bowl. The Mogul • February 2010 f 9 Season Pass Sale A Dozen Years Later... Still $199 It’s that time of year again! Bogus Basin Web Cam View of front side from Pioneer Lodge as of January 27, 2010 f Bogus Basin Ski Club Inc. 10 Economics 101 - Supply and Demand by Greenwood’s Ski Haus Believe it or not, just as we are enjoying some of the best skiing and riding of the season, it’s also time for local retailers to make buying decisions for next season. Local retailers have already been reviewing the 2010-2011 product lines and will be trying out the new equipment very soon so that they can make the best decisions about how to stock their stores for next year. Yes, it seems crazy that we retailers barely have a feel for how this season will turn out and we are already writing orders for the ski gear we will be selling next season. trouble finding a good selection of some highly demanded items at your favorite retailers! Nobody wanted to expose themselves to the risk of ending up with too much product this season and now the effect is that there is not enough of some items. What does this mean to you as a consumer? If you see a good deal, don’t assume that you can wait and the price f Don’t be surprised if you have trouble finding a good selection of some highly demanded items at your favorite retailers! We are all dealing with the challenges of the current economy and having to make tough choices about spending, even for the winter sports we are all so passionate about. Keep in mind a few things about supply and demand as you shop the mid-winter sales this year. Based on last season’s sales, most retailers didn’t order as much product for 09-10 as they had for previous seasons. The sales floor may look well stocked right now but most retailers don’t have as much back stock of inventory to continue selling from. Because there wasn’t as much demand, suppliers also cut back the amount of product produced and have reduced or eliminated the ability for retailers to place reorders to fill in for items they have already sold this season. Don’t be surprised if you have will go lower later. You might luck out but the gamble is that the product will be gone all together by the time you decide to buy. There are simply fewer products out there in the snow sports market place to begin with so don’t miss out! Our prediction is that you will find better deals this spring than you will by waiting until next fall. There will be some exciting new 2010-2011 gear to look at next fall but there may not be the deals out there that you have found in years past. When you find what you’re looking for and the price is reasonable, remember that saying about a bird in the hand!
