There will be an abundance of family friendly events
and activities throughout each day, whilst evening
performances will be as adventurous and varied as
our visitors to this great little city! From women-only
events to live music and hypnosis – Truro Festival has
it covered!

This Easter welcomes the
return of Truro’s very own art,
culture and music festival brought
to you by TotallyTruro BID.
Inspired by the range and quality of artistic in
and around Truro, the festival is brimming with
events to entertain, entice and excite.
Art, music, theatre, film, literature, dance, comedy
and more will be in all corners of the city over the
course of the 10 day festival. Along with the return
of intimate theatre performances, live music and art
exhibitions, 2015 also welcomes new events and
partnerships to the line-up.

Free entry open daily from 10am – 4pm
For the first time ever, Truro Festival will be
bringing that ‘Glasto’-feel to the city centre.
Lemon Quay will be transformed into a ‘Festival Village’ for the
duration of the event – complete with yurts, a chill-out area, daily
live acoustic music and a whole host of art workshops, pop up
theatre, games and more. There will be daily events in the
Kenwyn and Allen yurts accompanied by live music,
a bar and street food on the
‘Tinney Green’ – all named after
the three rivers in Truro.

will host an eclectic
mix of writers, poets,
filmmakers and
performers set in
sumptuous surroundings.

Allen Yurt will host daily
artist pop-up studios in the
mornings followed by artist led
workshops in the afternoons.
Tinney Green will be your ‘rest-bite’
from the activities, in the centre of the
village. Offering refreshments, food and
acoustic music by local musicians daily.
Look out for this symbol throughout the guide to see
which events take place in the village.
Truro Farmers Market will also be serving up their
delicious range of local street food throughout the festival.

Truro Festival is all about
celebrating everything Truro
has to offer and extreme
sports are something the
people of our fair city are
definitely interested in. So, if
you are a fan of
skateboarding, BMXing,
rollerblading or scooters
then we have the thing for
you. The rooftop skate park
complete with everything
you need to air, grind and
backflip (if you’re
good enough).
Refreshments
will also be

for the duration.

For one night only, the NCP will be hosting
a silent disco with headphones: featuring a
host of local and international acts
supplied by worldwide music brand MTV.
Club MTV will be bringing down DJ’s
Rewire and Varski with headliners The
Wideboys, famous for the international hit
Sambuca, closing out the evening. Local
acts involved will be playing a mix of
different genres for people to choose
between (in their headsets!) with Stratus
Records opening the night playing their
mix of hiphop and dance then Freerange
DJs and Rollers Inc going head to head
with funk, house and Drum and Bass
beats through your headphones.
One floor will be dedicated to street art
where a selection of the South-west’s best
street artists will be creating an urban
masterpiece – with the chance for partygoers to try their hand and create their
own collaborative masterpiece too.
Entry is £5 all day - no age restriction.
In addition to the skate park, there will be
skate and BMX competitions sponsored by
Penloe and Dead Sailor BMX – entrants will
be given a free four week training course at
Mount Hawke Skate Park ahead of the
competition - to enter you must be
between 11 and 16 and go to www.individualevents.co.uk for rules and to submit a
short letter as to why you feel you should
be entered into the competition – more

cultural festival for their city.

Partnership there will also be a wheelchair
basketball court where people can try out
the sport – during the event there will be a
demonstration match by some extremely
hard core sportsmen and women!

art demonstrations, youth dance

We are delighted to launch the opening night of the Truro Festival 2015 with
Stornoway. Named after the Hebridean outpost but hailing from Oxford, the fourpiece British alternative indie folk band Stornoway play uplifting melodies with
enough musical muscle to keep things lively. As their fans say, a band that will
always put you in a good mood - no matter how bad your day – is Stornoway.

selected by well-known literary and environmental figures

Embark on a journey led by art to discover Truro's
forgotten past. Follow ancient pathways, on foot and by
ferry, that reveal contemporary art works and multisensory installations linked by water, the artworks
uncover concepts of journey, place and history. Artists
include Val Ashby, Sam Bassett, Faye Dobinson, Jesse Leroy Smith,
Lindsey Morgan-Lundie and Roger Thorpe. Bring wellies and an
appetite for adventure. Beginning at the Cathedral, you will journey through time
and place along to the quay to catch the ferry that re-traces old water-ways to land
in ancient woods leading to Old Kea. Cream teas will be available on the route from
Halwyn Tea Rooms. The walk is challenging in parts, so come prepared.

Watch Dom tinkering in his ‘pop up studio’, as he researches a new project
exploring skateboarding and classical music with a little inspiration from Joseph
Emidy. Dom Allen’s ‘Petra-Nelisha Organ’ will be on display in the Art Yurt
throughout the festival, with thank you to Falmouth Art Gallery.

Joseph Antonio Emidy (1775 – 23 April 1835) was a Guinea-born musician who was
enslaved in early life, before becoming a notable and celebrated violinist and composer
in Cornwall.

1-3pm Drop In Workshop - Printmaking with artists Jesse Leroy Smith
and Sally Cole
£2 each. All ages welcome.
This fun and rewarding workshop will introduce you to printmaking and
needs no previous experience of art techniques. With the simple but highly
effective techniques of dry point and mono-type the artists will lead you
through a process of creating metal or card plates that are inscribed or
stenciled. These can then be inked up in a range of colours producing diverse
images and effects.
All materials will be provided but do bring old clothes or an apron, as the inks
are oil based. The workshop invites the public to make images for a unique
handmade book portraying all aspects of Cornwall. ’Travelogue Kernow’ see

material to draw from, ideally based on Truro, such as photos or drawings or
work from the street life or your imagination.

Learn how to create your own bonkers cartoon characters and put them into a
comic strip. Pick up some tricks of the trade, along with the techniques that
professionals use when putting a strip together, including storyboarding,
speech bubbles, sound effects and loads more!

Meet Caroline Pedler (artist and illustrator) in her pop up studio.
Watch her doodling and painting in her sketchbooks. Caroline

‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’ … take that first step into
the Story Republic. Intrepid story travellers are
invited to begin their own voyage into a realm of
tales, poems and songs of wanderings, journeys
real and imagined and passages into the unknown
and indefinable … Inside is a Waiting Room where
journeys start and end, where stories come and go.
Alongside the creative work of artists Amanda
Lorens, Alessandra Ausenda and John Keys is
artwork and stories by young writers from Richard

2015 is a year of cultural exchange between Mexico and the UK, and we have taken
this as our inspiration for part of the festival’s literary programme. Historically,
Cornwall has a very strong connection with Mexico through its shared mining heritage,
dating from the 1800s when a band of 60 Cornishmen set sail from Falmouth,
with 1,500 tons of mining machinery, to seek their fortune in the New World, and to
use their skills and technology to rescue its ailing silver mining industry. We will be
celebrating this connection by bringing together writers and poets from both cultures

film making workshops all day. All are welcome to come in, learn about
cameras, learn some basic

storyboarding and then go out

90 Second
Film Challenge
and Screening
Are you a budding Spielberg or
Hitchcock? Do you have an idea
for a short film? Have you always
wanted to see your work on the
big screen? Then Roughcut want to hear from you!
Roughcut is Cornwall’s only regular short film event, run by O-region in
association with Dogbite and they’ve got together with WTW Cinemas and
Falmouth University to run the 90 Second Film Challenge as part of the
festival. The rules are very simple! Shoot a film no longer
than 90 seconds including credits and enter it via the
Roughcut website. You could see your film on the big
screen at the Plaza cinema in Truro and be in with a
chance of
winning big
cash prizes.

screening will take place on
Thursday 2nd April, however
submissions are open right now.

students of our local schools on the theme of
‘Light up the community’. This is the preliminary
stage of a National Rotary Young Photographer
competition for 2015.

Truro High School for Girls,
Truro Prep and Roseland Community
College. The regional winners will be
announced during the Easter Sunday

March 2015 myCornwall magazine's 'Cornwall in My Soul'
event is inviting vistors to find out why Cornwall's writers, poets and readers are
so passionate about Cornwall and its people.We've got a fantastic line-up of
contributors, writers and others who are equally passionate about today's
Cornwall and its historical past. The line-up includes Poet Abigail Wyatt,
myCornwall columnist Simon Reed, writer and
researcher Mike Kierman, Cornish Language specialist
Matt Blewett and Cornish Bard Jowdy Davey.'Cornwall
In My Soul' will be a glimpse into the passions and
loves of Cornwall and its people, so come along and
find out why Cornwall and it's top independent
publication are worth getting to know. There'll also be
an opportunity for some of those in the audience to
take part in an Open Mic section of the event.

Truro was, and still is, a busy port and during the civil war between King Stephen and
Queen Matilda, a castle was built. Its site later became the cattle market, until this moved
to the outskirts and gave way to the Crown Courts.
Earl Richard of Cornwall, brother of Henry III and King of the Romans, granted Truro its
first charter in the 12th century. This was later renewed by Queen Elizabeth 1st. The
Charters gave Truro the right to hold markets - a right that it retains to this day.
From early medieval times Truro has been a Stannary Town. The Town Hall in the
Municipal Buildings, was the Stannary Court in the later part of the 19th century until
regular hearings were ended.
The port of Truro has moved around. In medieval times, when a Dominican Priory sat in
the shadow of the castle, the port was where Victoria Square is today. By the 18th century
it had retreated to Lemon Quay. Today, the port is opposite Boscawen Park, at Lighterage
Quay, whilst Lemon Quay is now a lively and attractive centre for events, including the
Farmers' Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays (by ancient Charter right!).
Richard and John Lander did not so much ‘put Truro on the map' as make the first
detailed map of the River Niger in Africa. Richard can be seen, watching over his home
town from atop his column up Lemon Street. Lander was followed to Africa by
missionary, Henry Martyn, who is as much remembered for his tragically unrequited love
affair with Lydia Grenfell as for his piety and early death amongst those to whom he
ministered.

The hillsides around the estuary valley that contains Truro have been settled since, at
least, the Bronze Age. In medieval times the town was established where the three rivers
(Tre-ru) - the Kenwyn, Allen and Glasteinan (or Tinney) - converge to form the Truro River,
which flows into the River Fal.

Today, Truro is a business and administrative centre, home to the best mix of
independent retailers in Cornwall, and with a cultural richness like no other.
