When I left the house, I was done, off to find a career and a life. I took with me many
great memories and friendships. The relationships I made during my time in the house
ultimately led to the life I have today. I became a better person and had a more fulfilling
life because of the people I met while in the house. As I get older and become more
aware of the effort it takes to create anything worthwhile, my gratitude grows for the
men who founded our fraternity and those who came after them. During my time
in the house, men like Marty Stradtman showed up to be sure we had the guidance
we needed. Alumni brothers wrote checks on our behalf and we did not know their
names. They did it as a show of gratitude and thankfulness - a belief in the mission
that is Phi Kappa Psi.
I was attracted to Cal Ep because we were diverse and smart and athletic. When Joe
Huhn as GP stood up in the chapter room and excoriated a couple of brothers for
acting as less than gentlemen, it changed my life and made me proud. We taught each
other a lot of things and we were given the gift of friendship. I would like to thank of
all of my brothers for being the model, and having the character of the best of a Phi
Psi man. A few of the qualities: fairness, goodwill and thankfulness. I hope that you
all have a wonderful holiday season, and will consider writing a check in support of
Cal Ep. Please consider a yearly pledge to give back in respect for those that gave to
us; it is fair and it is the right thing to do. Thanks in advance.
Finally, we need your time. We plan to start a regular guest speaking program for
Alumni – held on a Monday to coordinate with chapter meetings. The idea is that we
have a brother speak for ten minutes at dinner with a short question session afterwards
for those undergrads who might want to talk further. This gives the undergrads
someone to learn from and gives us the opportunity to give back and better a young
man’s view of the world.

president’s Letter
w
e have had a very busy fall quarter. Most
importantly, we have 21 new colony
members. Special thanks to Brother Dan
Cislo, our Vice President and Chapter Advisor, for
spearheading our alumni efforts. Numerous alumni
brothers have participated in recruitment efforts
including Brothers Jerry Waters, Chris Estrada, Jim
Harger, Albro Lundy, Randy Schnack, Kevan Lynd,
Marty Stradtman, and many more. We will conduct
winter rush at the house in January. We enjoyed an
alumni tailgate at the Rose Bowl, and conducted
several board meetings. Chuck Swift’s Christmas
Lunch was another success as always. We are working
on signage for the house as well as planning for the
Chapter Room.
We are working with UCLA and National to obtain
clarity on fraternity regulations. The environment is
far different than in the past, and clear direction and
rules are critical for Cal Ep’s long-term success. The
chapter house is fully occupied with tenants for the
school year, but we are targeting Phi Psi occupancy
by fall 2015 if not sooner. In order to help make that
a reality, we need a strong showing by our alums to
eliminate the roughly $3.5 million first mortgage on
the property. We charge rent and dues commensurate
with the quality of the new house and in relation to
other UCLA housing options, but the mortgage
is a serious financial constraint that will only be

eliminated by repayment. Please consider helping out
with your tax-deductible contribution to the Cal Ep
Campaign Fund.

40 brothers gathered for
Chuck Swift’s Annual Cal
Ep Christmas Lunch at Virginia
Country Club. For decades, Brother
Chuck has driven this annual event,
an important and successful effort
to tie together generations of Cal Ep
brothers. Following an invocation
by Brother Karma ’48, the alums
heard a very positive report from
Chapter Advisor Dan Cislo ’77 on
colonization efforts underway, as
well as from the National expansion
consultants living at the new chapter
house. We have 22 pledges as of press
time, and are planning for Winter
Rush. Board Secretary Bret Siciliano
explained the proposed updates to
our 1930s-era articles and bylaws,
which were unanimously approved.

regarding the latest developments
from National and UVA, as well
as the Chapter’s status regarding
budgeting and fundraising.
Board Chairman David Wehrly
then took the lead on behalf of the
Board and all the brothers present in
recognizing Brother Chuck Swift’s
longstanding and successful efforts
to bridge generations of Cal Ep Phi
Psi brothers. In many ways Chuck
is the glue that has held us together.
The Christmas has been a success for
decades thanks to Chuck. Despite
his extraordinarily shy nature,
Brother Swift shared comments,
and his contemporaries helped to
gently roast him a bit as well. He also
noted that he had passed the baton
on the Cabo trip to Brother Jerry
Waters, and on the Christmas lunch
to Brother Randy MacDougall. As a
nice touch, past president Brother
Jim McHenry handed our 50-year
Phi Psi pins to the many brothers
who had earned that recognition.
Next year’s Christmas lunch date is
already set: the first Thursday after
Thanksgiving, December 3, 2015.

Phi Psi Is Back at UCLA!
Colonization and Recruitment Report
C
olonization officially launched on October 15th.
We started with a great legacy, a great house,
strong alums and a strong team, and the efforts
paid off. This past week we initiated 21 members into
the nationally recognized colony of Phi Kappa Psi.
In the beginning, most mornings were spent on the
Bruin Walk and afternoons were spent meeting with
potential members at Jamba Juice, Kerckhoff hall, and
613 Gayley Avenue. Throughout the process, many
dedicated alums led by our Chapter Advisor Dan Cislo
made sure we had consistent and meaningful alumni
presence and input. The efforts brought a unique,
diverse, and dedicated group of men. Ranging in
majors from Bio-Engineering to Business/Economics
to Music, the group proves the wide variety of student
disciplines available at UCLA. In addition to studies,
the group of men also shows heavy dedication to
student clubs and activities, ranging from the Ski and
Snowboard Club to conducting Research at Ronald
Reagan Hospital. The common ground for these men
is that they are all eager to restore the great tradition
that is the California Epsilon Brotherhood, and carry
it to even greater heights.

The colony has progressed in many respects over the
last two months. The group members went through a
pledging ceremony on November 17th, completed the
New Member Education process during the quarter,
and were initiated in to the colony on December
11th. Of the 21 men, 19 have been appointed officer
and chair positions. The two representatives from
national will remain with the group through the
end of February to ensure that the new initiates
understand the duties of their office and are on track
to the official re-chartering ceremony. The goal is to
submit the petition to re-charter by the end of the
spring quarter of 2015. In the upcoming weeks, the
group is making preparations for a successful class of
recruits during winter recruitment. Special thanks
to Brothers Cislo, Estrada, Schnack, Harger, Lundy,
Waters and the other Cal Eps who helped out. Thanks
also to several brothers from other chapters ranging
from Cal to Kansas for their contributions. Finally,
thanks to James Perez and our national expansion
consultants, Kameron Willsey and Adam Dunworth,
for a job well done.

Phi Psi in the 40’s: Art Karma
A series of profiles on Cal Ep brothers who lived in the House after WWII.

rother Art Karma pledged
Phi Psi in 1947, and was
initiated in 1948 along with
brothers Willie Morrison and Jerry
Nelson. Art recalls brother Dick
Dickey getting him a job hashing
at Phi Psi which allowed him to
afford to join. Most of Art’s UCLA
classes were very large, between
300-350 students. The small size
of the Air Force ROTC course
drew his interest, and he ended up
joining. Art’s entire ROTC class
was called up to active duty in
Korea—he left for active duty the
day after graduation. Art served
as a navigator and bombardier
(nicknamed a “baboon”) in a B-26
Invader, flying 45 combat missions
in Korea. He was awarded the
Distinguished Flying Cross and
Air Medal, went through special
weapons training, and witnessed
an atom bomb test in Nevada.
After active duty Art continued
in the reserves and retired as a Lt.
Colonel.
At UCLA, Art was active in debate
and speech. He recalls being
tapped to attend a 1948 Phi Psi
convention at which some chapters
urged a motion to ban the Amherst
chapter because it had pledged
a black student. Art recalls that
the Western U.S. chapters were
outraged by the proposed motion,
and devised a plan for its defeat.
Using parliamentary procedures,
they succeeded in passing an
amendment to the motion
which stripped operative motion
language. When the disputed
motion was brought up for a vote
at the end of the conference, Art
and others pointed out that as
amended, the proposed motion
no longer had operative language
and therefore was not capable of
enactment. National eventually
pulled Amherst’s charter, but Cal
Ep’s efforts are worth remembering.
Art played on the UCLA rugby
team and is a member of the UCLA
Varsity Club. His fondest memories
of life at Cal Ep are of comradeship.
He was admitted to the California
Bar in 1959 after graduating from
UCLA Law School. Brother Karma
lives in Ventura, and is a regular
participant in the annual Cabo
Superbowl event, as well as other
alumni events, and serves as our de
facto alumni chaplain.

aniel M. Cislo, Esq. is the
managing partner of Cislo
& Thomas, LLP, a Southern
California intellectual property law
firm that specializes in the preparation
and prosecution of patents, copyrights,
and trademarks, as well as licensing
and intellectual property litigation. In
addition to being a graduate of Loyola
Law School and UCLA’s School of
Engineering, Dan Cislo is registered to
practice before the United States Patent
Office and is also an inventor himself.
Dan also specializes in litigation and
has litigated intellectual property cases
in the Central District of California
and throughout the country. He
is currently serving as an attorney
representative to the Ninth Circuit
Federal Courts and is admitted to the
Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, the
District of Columbia, and numerous
other Courts across the country. Dan’s
most recent project is the creation of
a new online provisional patent filing
system, PatentFiler, which provides
small businesses and entrepreneurs
with a convenient and efficient
way to file their provisional patent
application(s) online with the United
States Patent Office giving them an
immediate filing date.
When Dan is not working, he enjoys
jogging, skiing, whitewater rafting,
ocean kayaking, body surfing, and
spending time with his wife of over
twenty-five years, Lisa, and their four
children. Dan is currently the Chapter
Advisor and Vice President of the Cal
Ep House Corp.

Martin Bruinsma (74’)

He has on occasion returned to the
land of his childhood, Saudi Arabia, to
paint faux finishes in in royal palaces.
Marty is a member of the California
Art Club, and is currently working on
a series of paintings based on film noir
for an upcoming exhibition.

artin Bruinsma is a fine-artpainter currently living in Los
Angeles. He was a member
of the ‘74 pledge class that helped
rebuild Phi Kappa Psi. After attending
UCLA, Marty studied at the Art Center
College of Design in Pasadena where
he earned a BFA in Illustration. Upon
graduation he moved to New York City,
where he was approached to teach at
the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Upon his return to Los Angeles, Marty
continued a career in the entertainment
Marty is the father of 12-year-old
twins, his daughter Frances and
son Marshall, who attend St. Paul
the Apostle School in Westwood.
Marty has continued his relationship
with UCLA on both a social and
professional level. Presently he is
working with UCLA Endocrinology
Department to create a medical
illustration showing locations and
prevelance of ectopic parathyroid
glands. He counts his friendships
made at Phi Kappa Psi as his strongest
and longest lasting. He currently
serves as secretary of the Cal Ep
House Corporation.
