April - USC Interfraternity Council
2014 April IFC NEWSLETTER University of Southern California April 2014 IN THIS ISSUE The goal for this newsletter is that it will reach every single member of each IFC fraternity. IFC would like for its members to not only be informed, but also educated about what’s going on around the row. That being said, if you would like The Row to be informed or educated about something going on in your chapter; a philanthropy, an alumni event, don’t hesitate to contact us. We‘d like to spread individual chapters’ messages to Greeks as well as IFC’s. Eventually, we hope this newsletter reaches outside the Greek Community as well. Thanks! -‐Austin Horton VP of Communications Focusing on Philanthropy
There was a surge of philanthropy on the row as more and more fraternities hosted their event in April Page 1 Day of Silence Focusing on Philanthropy

Eleven of the fraternities hosted chapter philanthropy and every chapter participated in various other events including sorority events and outside charities as well. These events, typically on a Friday or Saturday can be anything you think of. On April 11th, the Interfraternity Council hosted the nationally held event “Day of Silence.” The event was held at the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity in co-‐
sponsorship with QuASA. The purpose of the event was to call attention to all the victims of LGBT prejudice that exists. The event was created in 1996 in to collaborate school systems to end bullying for those who feel as though they cannot speak for themselves. Throughout the day you are meant to stay silent to show solidarity for those being bullied. At the IFC hosted Day of Silence, there were special made buttons to show support, or recognition of a Greek Ally. Throughout the week these buttons were handed out to people in the Greek system, in hopes they would spread the mess age Day of Silence. People began wearing these buttons on their backpacks, shirts, all in the week leading up to the event. On Friday the event opened up. There was free BBQ catered to the event, a jazz band in the front yard, and free duct tape and buttons. Many people were walking back and forth around the Greek Row following other philanthropic events and were entering the Day of Silence. Many people were Interested in discovering more about the different LGBT on campus organizations, and efforts by those groups for the advancement of LGBT rights. The event was very successful regarding the fact that so many people are involved in a discussion for improving the Greek community’s stance and attitude towards LGBT membership and rights. This event is the first step of many taken in a direction of good change in the Greek community. The Greek Award Winners
