Pins & Pearls Charity Ball
On February 11th, 2012 the IFC and Panhel Greek organizations on
campus came together for the first All-Greek charity ball benefiting
the American Parkinson's Association. This is a cause that is near
and dear to our hearts due to the fact that Dean Bob Hines was
recently diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. $2,000 was raised for
the foundation. The money was raised through donations from
various local businesses, ticket sales, tee-shirt sales, and through a
silent auction.
The new Panhel and IFC executive council members were
announced at Pins and Pearls. The president of Panhellenic is
Julienne Brown; VP of Recruitment and Public Relations is Kimberly
Ceres; VP of Standards is Katie d’Esterhazy; and VP of
Administration is Kayla Flippen. The president of IFC is
Matt Joseph; VP is Michael Lintner; Secretary is Jared Johnson;
Treasurer is Clarke Manley; and Public Relations is Charlie Mosher.
A special thanks to Brian Chisom and Lindsay Faulstick for making
this event possible. Overall, the Pins and Pearls Charity Ball was
extremely successful!! Panhel and IFC are both hoping to have the
opportunity to host Pins and Pearls again next year.

Mathew Joseph, ΠΚΑ
Julienne Brown, ΦΜ
Julienne Brown is the current President of
the Panhellenic Council. Julienne is a junior
from Orange County, VA and is a Heath and
Human Performance major. She plans on
one day attending graduate school for
physical therapy. In addition, to her
academics, Jules is a dedicated member of
the Roanoke girl’s Field Hockey team. In her
spare time she enjoys spending time with
her Phi Mu sisters, and also loves getting to
know new people on campus. Jules had a
unique high school experience due to the
fact that she attended an all-girls boarding
school—an experience she wouldn’t trade for
the world. A few random facts about Jules
are she was a “Navy brat”, loves doughnuts,
and hates feet. When asked her
favorite aspect of Greek-life she
says, “My favorite part of Greek
Life is the bonds that are shared
between both the men and
women of the Greek
community.”
Matt Joseph is the current President of the
Interfraternity Council. Matt is a sophomore
from West Hartford, CT and is a Chemistry
major. In his spare time, Matt enjoys
playing intermural sports with his fraternity
Pi Kappa Alpha, especially basketball. Matt
aspires to attend Medical School at either
UVA or U-Conn to be a family physician or
surgeon. A couple fun facts about Matt are:
he is the Delta Gamma anchor boy for the
Informal Pledge Class of 2011 and is the
best dancer in his fraternity. If you’re really
lucky he might even “teach you how to
dougie”. When asked his favorite aspects of
Greek-life Matt explains, “My
favorite part of Greek-life is
getting to know new people
on campus and the joint exec
meetings between Panhel and
IFC. Those are always entertaining.”

Connor Toomey, ΚΑ
Kirby Davis, ΧΩ
A great example of a Greek leader on
campus is Kirby Davis. Kirby is a senior
from Lafayette, LA and is the current
president of the senior class, held two
leadership positions in her sorority Chi
Omega, is a member of CCM, SGA, and
conducts research on lobsters in Dr.
Jorgensen’s research lab. This wellrounded student was recently accepted to
LSU Medical School. A few random facts
about Kirby are: she loves to travel and is
a member of the Team USA National Jump
Rope Team. Through jump rope, Kirby
was given the opportunity to travel to
South Africa for the World Jump Rope
competition along with other exotic
locations such as Greece, Germany, Czech
Republic, and many states throughout the
US. She even got to jump in the Macy’s
Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.
When asked her favorite part of Greek-life
she says, “My favorite part of Greek-life
has been participating in intramural sports,
lip syncs, and of course spending time with
my sisters.”
Connor is a junior from San Antonio, TX, and
is double majoring in English and Spanish.
Connor is a member of the honor’s program
here on campus and was recently accepted
in Alpha Chi Honor Society, which only
makes up the top 5% of the juniors and 10%
of the seniors. In addition, to Connor’s
academic achievements, he is a member of
the Roanoke Basketball team, Secretary for
the Kappa Alpha Order, and has been a
resident advisor for the past two years.
Recently, Connor has been given the
opportunity to open a chapter of National
Society of Success and Leadership. This is a
national leadership honor society with a
focus on building leaders for a better
tomorrow. This is a really exciting challenge
that Connor is more than ready to face. In
Connor’s spare time, he enjoys traveling and
spending time with friends and family. After
his freshman year he was given the
opportunity to travel to Peru for a marketing
internship. When asked Connor’s favorite
part of Greek-life he says, “I feel that, Greek
Life offers incredible opportunities as far as
learning how to lead people effectively,
learning to express and articulate your ideas
clearly in a thoughtful and concise manner,
and of course, time management.”

La La La Lady Bugs
Alpha Sigma Alpha has had a busy semester!
We picked up 15 new ladybugs and we are so
excited to have them. We spent bids day with
our new girls at a local roller-skating rink,
enjoying ourselves and getting to know our
newest members! Congratulations to all of the
sororities and fraternities on a successful formal
recruitment. We were also honored to learn that
we are now the largest sorority on Roanoke’s
campus. Currently, our chapter is planning our
upcoming philanthropy week in March and our
Spring Inaugural is on March 31st. This is also
an important year for Theta Beta because our
10-year celebration on campus is coming up!
We’re excited to reflect on how far we’ve come
and even more eager for the future! Alpha
Sigma Alpha (Theta Beta) looks forward to a
very rewarding spring semester!

The girls of the Pi Epsilon Chapter of Chi
Omega are having a great beginning to the
second semester! We are please to say that
recruitment went well for both sororities and
fraternities. We would like to congratulate all
organizations on a successful formal
recruitment. Chi Omega picked up 13
beautiful new women. We feel that they will
make wonderful additions to our chapter and
are so excited to get to know them better.
For news within our sisterhood, we would like
to congratulate Maggie Anderson on her
acceptance to Phi Beta Kappa,
Emily Robertson on getting a job with Dixon
Hughes Goodman, Kirby Davis on her
acceptance into LSU Medical School, and
Taylor Cazeault for being inducted into the
Criminal Justice Honor’s society. We are so
proud of all of them! With this warm spring
weather we are so ready to have the second

Teach Me How to
Like it, Love it, PHI MU!
Spring 2012 has gotten off to quite a start
for the Gamma Eta chapter of Phi Mu. On
Bid Day, we picked up a fantastic pledge
class of 11 and went bowling to celebrate.
We are beyond excited to welcome our new
members into our sisterhood and know that
they will be great additions to our chapter!
Congratulations to all the other fraternities
and sororities on a successful formal
recruitment. In February, Phi Mu held our
annual “Mr. Leg’s Week” to support
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
Throughout the week, all four fraternities
competed in various competitions such as
penny wars, t-shirt sales, lip sync and the
Mr. Legs Pageant. All of the proceeds were
donated to our local CMN Hospital, Carillion
Children’s Hospital in Downtown Roanoke.
It was a very successful week! The sisters
of Gamma Eta are very excited for the
upcoming events the spring including Relay
for Life and Alumni Weekend. We hope that
everyone is off to a great start and has a
successful semester!

The sisters of Delta Gamma are having an
amazing start to our spring semester. Delta
Gamma had a great recruitment, picking up
eleven wonderful new members. We would like
to extend congratulations to all Greek
organizations on campus for a successful f
ormal recruitment. We finished last year
strong with a new event, “Don’t Blow Your
Finals With DG,” and “Take a Break with Delta
Gamma” where we passed out free candy to
the campus community outside of commons
during the first two days of finals week. We
plan to do more of these events this spring, so
keep a look out for DG! Delta Gamma has
been working hard to become active members
of the Roanoke College community. Our sisters
are also very excited to take part in several
outside service activities in the Salem area,
including a winter carnival at a local
elementary school and participating in the race
for a cure. For all those interested in learning
more about Delta Gamma and our chapter

Fried Chicken, Baked Ham,
Kappa Alpha, YES MA’AM!
The Beta Rho chapter of Kappa Alpha Order
was pleased to extend bids to six new
members this semester. We whole-heartedly
believe they will make excellent additions to
our brotherhood. We recently attended our
regional conference and won two recognition
awards, “most community service hours per
man” and “most dollars raised per man.” We
also had our current President, Patrick
DelBuono, elected to the position of Province
Undergraduate Chairman. This position is
the regional liaison between the KA National
Office and KA chapters in Virginia, West
Virginia, and North Carolina. In addition, the
Kappa Alpha Order is looking forward to our
annual trip to West Virginia for Old South.
We are looking forward to a semester of hard
work and fun.

Leaders by Choice
The brothers of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, Xi
Chapter, are continuing to proudly
represent its national headquarters and
the Greek community of Roanoke College.
This spring semester Pi Kappa Phi received
eleven new and amazing associate
members. We would like to congratulate
all the sororities and fraternities on a
successful formal recruitment. We
recently elected a new Executive Council
that will help lead and guide the fraternity
through the next year. The new Executive
Council, attended our Mid-Year Leadership
Conference where Xi Chapter won eleven
awards. One of our brothers, Mike
Bankert, completed the Journey of Hope
over the summer, in which brothers of Pi
Kappa Phi start out in California and ride
bikes all the way to Washington D.C.
helping to raise money and spread awareness for people with disabilities and help
our philanthropy Push America. Last year
Pi Kappa Phi also had the best fraternity
GPA on campus, and surpassing the all
male average.

Whose House?! Pike’s House!!
Spring semester of 2012 has taken flight and
the brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha have hit the
ground running. Phi Chapter finished last
semester excelling in the pillar of
Leadership—having brothers elected as the
new SGA president, SGA vice president, IFC
president, and IFC secretary. Our brothers
have had no problem staying active on
campus. We are now are focusing on the
pursuit of achieving great things now that we
have obtained these positions. At the close of
last semester, the brotherhood had the
opportunity to volunteer at the Community
Christmas store. This was an experience that
all valued and that has inspired the
brotherhood to continue to volunteer in the
community this semester. There are already
are several community service events on the
calendar, including Habitat for Humanity in
the coming weeks. We were fortunate
enough to once again bring in an excellent
Formal 2012 pledge class. The new Psi
pledge class is seven members strong.
Although, it’s smaller than a typical formal
pledge class, Psi shows no lack of quality,
and embodies "Scholars, Leaders, Athletes,
and Gentlemen". As our new executive
committee fully takes shape, the unanimous
goal of not just our new exec but our entire
brotherhood is to ensure by the end of the
semester that we portray the image of
Scholars, Leaders, Athletes, and
Gentlemen as loud and clear as possible
to both the Roanoke College community
and to the other surrounding
communities at large. We gladly
welcome another challenging semester
as we strive to complete it as
successfully and prosperous as possible.

The Sigma Chi, Tau chapter at Roanoke
College continues its excellence this year by
selecting Michael Lintner as VP of IFC. In
addition, Chris Boylan passed the
presidency to “The Lord” Chip Ward.
Currently, we are in the midst of renovations on the new house up on Elizabeth
Campus. It has been determined that
thirteen brothers will be residing at the new
Sigma Chi house on Elizabeth Campus in
the fall semester of 2012. The thirteen
brothers that will be residing on E.C next
year are helping design the house. This will
ensure greatness for the future of Sigma
Chis to come so, that they will be able to
create the same strong bonds that we have
as a brotherhood now.
