K_319704_BL_LRTG_L05_Fair_SPA.indd 1 1/23/10 2:06:20 AM La feria by Missy Cruller Build Background Read the title to children, and have them describe what they see in the cover illustration. Ask whether they have had any experiences at a fair like the one shown. Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary. Point out the repeated sentence pattern Yo veo. Draw attention to the kite that a character holds in each picture. Here are some suggestions: Page 2: Explain that this book shows a mother, father, and daughter at a fair. On every page, the family sees things at the fair. Point out that the pictures have labels to name what is shown. Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Heinemann, Portsmouth, N.H. Choices for Support Concepts of Print Use a sentence from La feria to give children practice in finding the first and last letters of words. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: • Listening Game Have children listen for beginning sounds. Have them raise their hands if two words begin with the same sound and keep their hands in their laps if the beginning sound is different. Say pairs of words such as these: gusta/gato, rojo/río, globo/flor, juego/suave, banderas/bonitas. • Segment Sentences Say a sentence of three or four words, speaking naturally, and have children say each word separately. • ABC Materials: magnetic or cardboard letters, or letter cards. Have children choose letters and put them in ABC order. Kindergarten 3 Lesson 5: La feria © Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company K_319704_BL_LRTG_L05_Fair_SPA.indd 3 1/23/10 2:06:21 AM Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 5.2 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension Skill Sequence of Events Tell children that they can think about what happens first, next, and last in a story. Model thinking about the sequence of events: Think Aloud Primero, la niña trae su cometa a la feria. Practice the Skill Ask children to tell what they would do first, next, and last if they visited a fair. Writing Prompt Read aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6. Draw a picture of your favorite kind of kite. Why is your kite special?
