It is hard to believe that I have known you for almost a year and what a blessed year it has been from orientation, to ordination, to installation. It has been an exciting year for me and a new chapter in your church life. You have deeply welcomed and blessed me and I look forward to all the experiences we will share in our next year together. Last weekend was the solstice and we are now officially into summer. This is the time when we hope to relax, vacation, garden, and spend time with family. It is a time to give yourself what you need to be happy and healthy. It is also a great time to spend time with God both by worshipping with others and spending some time alone with God with prayer, scripture or nature. One of the best sabbath practices is to find that time in the day that best works for you to sit with God for a few minutes. For 10 minutes or longer, contemplate what was best about your day and thank God for it and then bring what was most difficult about your day and ask God to help you with it. Then spend a few moments just being with God in peaceful relaxation. Another idea is to read a small part of scripture each morning and say a little prayer as you begin and end the day. Others find great closeness to God in nature, out walking, sitting on the porch, or working in the garden. Each person must find his or her own spiritual practice. And it is important not to compare your spiritual practice with that of others. Everyone is different. But the most important thing is to spend time with God in a way that is life-giving and generative for you, at whatever time of day and doing whatever activity brings you closer to the Holy One. So have a blessed summer. May God's peace and joy live in you. Pastor Linda KEEP UP TO DATE WITH NEW OPPORTUNITIES & HAPPENINGS!! CORRESPONDENCE: From Mercy Ships: "Thank you for your $525 gift to Mercy Ships. The compassion shown by YOU and other supporters gave little Marie Sylvie a wonderful present on her seventh birthday - she moved her arm for the first time in five years! A free surgery released the scar tissue caused by a severe burn injury. The heartbeat of Mercy Ships is shown through the selfless service of our volunteers and through YOUR generosity. Thank you for helping us bring hope and healing to the world's forgotten poor." Following the model of Jesus, Don Stephens, President/Founder BRUCE AND LAURIE HAWLEY UPDATE-MAY 2015 You remember "super storm Sandy". It was two and a half years ago. There was a huge response of volunteers for a while. Less now. Lately we've been seeing the reports of tornado damage throughout the Midwest. It will be harder to get help for the east coast problems that will take years more to "fix". We have been working with Kristin VanKampen, RCA coordinator for volunteer engagement, as she develops the RCA partnership with World Renew. She has built a team of staffers and others to assist in a partnership that supports the World Renew program while remaining true to the RCA principles of mission. A couple of weeks ago, Kristin led a team of RCA staff on a mission trip to New Jersey. We were invited to join them. We met at the Highland Park Reformed Church where Pastors Seth and Stephanie Kaper-Dale hosted us. It was a joy to see the numerous ways that church is serving their community, even while hosting hundreds of volunteers who have come to help Sandy victims. We had lunch each day at the Reformed Church at Keyport. While there, we met Bob. He was anxious to share his story. He described himself as one who had grown up without faith. Then Sandy happened. Bob and his wife, Pam, stayed in their house as long as they could. Then it began to waiver and they had to jump into the bay. For over two hours they struggled to get thru the debris, sometimes going under it, until they finally got to safety. Volunteers came from all over to help fix the homes of his neighbors, his community and to rebuild his home. As he talked with the volunteers, he heard them say things like, "Because we have been blessed by Christ, we feel called to bless others", and "We are loved by God, called to love others." He was seeing faith in action, and it stirred a desire in him. He and Pam started getting in the Word and were baptized in the bay, the very water they had struggled in during the storm. Bob saw that God had used the storm to begin his journey of faith. We were reminded again of the power of mission. We talked with the pastor's husband at the Keyport church. They have been fixing hot lunches, feeding volunteers 5 days a week for the last 2 1/2 years. He talked about their church. He said they had been a small, struggling church. The storm gave them a new purpose. Today, the church continues to grow, and daily church members join in the kitchen to serve and to enjoy fellowship with the volunteers and with each other. They have been richly blessed when they stepped out to become a blessing to others. The group worked at a couple of sites but I want to tell you of only one. We met Loretta Monday morning. Her husband had died 6 weeks before the flood, and then her house had been ruined. Since then, the house has been raised, and repairs begun. Monday, Loretta seemed cold and defeated. As we began the work we were asked to do, one of the team members, Tracy decided to go outside. The weather was nice, but the outside was a mess. Tuesday, Loretta came out to sit while Tracy worked. They talked and she opened up. They spent the rest of the week together, cleaning up the mess, talking, laughing and just being together. By the end of the week, we all got hugs! Love always wins. ' *'-. &&#s»zs*! -..iwrnm-H'-i Shortly we will be headed to Grand Rapids for a week of meeting within the RCA and with World Renew to continue the work of preparing for the future. Please pray for wisdom, as we look to the future together. THE HARVEST TABLE HELPS SUPPORT THE DEACON'S FUND Do your neighbors close the curtains and hide when they see you coming with more zucchini to share? Are your cherry tomatoes rotting on the ground and going to seed? Is your lettuce about to bolt? Stop the vegetable abuse! Just bring your extra veggies and flowers to church on Sunday and donate them to "the Harvest Table" Want fresh veggies and flowers? No need to run to the store after church for fresh produce and flowers looking for a parking spot and making another stop. Just pick up what you like right at church and make a donation to the Deacon's Fund. The Harvest Table will be set up as soon as there are fresh flowers and veggies available for donation. The Deacon's Fund has already helped two families who suffered from house fires this year by giving them gift cards. In 2014, the Deacon's fund assisted 5 families in various ways, totaling $995.63. MISSIONS UPDATE - Nepal Earthquake Relief Thanks to your generous giving, we were able to raise and send $880 to World Vision for the continuing recovery efforts in Nepal. As reported on World Vision's website, this was Nepal's deadliest disaster — affecting some 8 million people. Currently, World Vision is assessing clean water and hygiene needs of local communities, and providing families with food, shelter, and household supplies. In addition to supplying the basics, World Vision has set up 12 Child-Friendly Spaces and temporary learning centers to provide a safe space for children to play and study while their families are in transition. Please continue to pray for Nepal and thank you for helping provide Christian love through these relief efforts to the victims of this tragic disaster. Sunday School Corner Curious to know what our Sunday School students have been up to? What gifts are they are making to sell at the bazaar to help raise money for the church? What mission work did they learn about that the Reformed Church Women do in our area. Who was their favorite bible person they learned about this year? What are turnover cookies and resurrection rolls? Where did Sunday School recreate the belly of the whale and learn about Jonah? Who is Deborah, judge of Israel? You can learn the answers to these burning questions by asking a Sunday School student. Boy Scout Corner Troop 121 Our end of the year Court of Honor was held on June 10th, where we had advancement awards as well as merit badge awards. Summer Camp will be from August 2nd to August 7th. ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL HELPERS NEEDED Adult Sunday School helpers are needed for July and August. Please contact Snookie Patterson or Linda Miles if you are interested in helping out for one or more Sundays. OUR TERCENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY IS JUST MONTHS AWAY ^X The 300th Anniversary of our establishment of the congregation of the Reformed Dutch Church of Claverack begins in less than six months. Many events have been talked about. Now is the time to turn these ideas into actual plans. Without your help, this will never happen! How can you help? > Review the historical outline of the church prepared by our church Mary Hallenback. Add any events to the list that will enrich our updated history of the church, especially since 1965. > Provide a list of church memorabilia you have proudly kept - whether pictures, newspaper articles, church publications, Sunday School mementos, etc., that we can proudly display during the Celebration events. > Provide housing the night of Palm Sunday, March 22, 2016 for the members of the Hope College Chapel Choir. > Help sort pictures for a power point program. > Create publicity of the church's history and tercentennial events. > Do you have a way you can wish you can help that we haven't mentioned? Please contact the church office or Glenn Holzhauer with the ways you can help. Special thanks to Irene Holzhauer for planning and organizing the fun evening that was enjoyed by the folks who attended the ," v Mac-Haydn Theatre and Dinner get-together in June. /c The show, unknown to everyone beforehand, was "The Drowsy Chaperone" a most delightful and entertaining musical comedy... and the dinner that followed at the Lagonia Italian Restaurant in Chatham provided everyone with good food and lots of fun conversation. It was a special treat that both Pastor Linda and Pastor Nick could join us this year. Hope you too can come along for next year's theatre/dinner date! Reformed Dutch Church of Claverack May 14, 2015 Approved June 10,2015 The May 2015 Consistory meeting of the Reformed Dutch Church of Claverack was called to order at 7:00 PM by Pastor Linda Miles who opened the meeting with a prayer. Present were Lloyd, Louise, Bill, Steve, Glenn, John, Cindy, Donna, Roger and Julie. Mike and Cheryl were absent. The minutes of the April 8, 2015 meeting were approved by motion of Bill, and seconded by Lloyd. Mike Daly was unable to attend this meeting, so Bill Better acted as Secretary. All were present with the exception of Mike and Cheryl. Correspondence was reviewed. There was a letter from Helen McArthur, daughter of Alice Duntz who will be visiting the church in August and will be presenting a check for $1,000.00, $500.00 of which is for the choir and $500.00 for the library. In other correspondence, there were thank you notes from food pantries and a thank you note from Pastor Linda. There was an Elders report indicating a number of new members, both in adult and child categories. The Deacons also provided a report. There was a general discussion about a retreat, which was tabled until June. There was a report that Olan Mills is tentatively scheduled for November 7th and 15th, 2015 for photographs. Nancy Rossweiler will be the delegate to the classes based on a motion made by Donna and seconded by Lloyd. The Christian Growth Committee reported May 17th would be the last day of Sunday school and there would be teacher recognition plants given to each of the Sunday school teachers. Bibles will be handed out to all third graders. It was also reported that Sunday school would take over the basket booth as a summer activity to keep kids interested. Steve agreed to add information about Sunday school on the website. The Cemetery Committee has submitted a report. The letter from Pastor Linda which was sent to the congregation was well received. Lloyd reported about the update to the Facebook page. Lloyd also reported about the Missions Committee, indicating eight people had participated in the Crop Walk raising over $1,000 and that we had responded to various appeals to natural disasters. Roger also reported that he has distributed food to local food pantries. The Nurture Committee under Julie and Louise reported they've made visits to shut-ins and a card will be put in-place for communion for shut-ins. The Finance Committee provided the finance report for the period January through April. Our income was ahead of budget and our expenses below. The Building and Property Committee reported the tree had been removed in the parking area and that the water leak in the cemetery room had been fixed. They also reported there are repairs needed in the church bell area, with respect to the cribbing. Lloyd made a motion and Louise seconded, to make an exception to the policy to receive three estimates for the work on the church bell area, and instead to hire Ron Moore who has a history with and specializes in this kind of work to have the repairs done. Bill made a motion and Roger seconded to reimburse John Dunham for materials for the case for the stained glass window. Under the Worship Committee the Elders meeting discussed sourcing pulpit supply. Under the Personnel Committee, Mike and Julie have completed Shelly's evaluation. They have developed a form that will be used for all employees. After a discussion, it was decided that Shelly's salary be raised and that she receive two weeks' vacation for 1-4 years, three weeks from 5-10 years, and four weeks of vacation after 10 years. Julie made a motion to approve this package and Bill seconded. It was also reported that thirteen people signed up to attend an upcoming show at Mac-Haydn Theatre. It was also decided by a motion by Bill and seconded by Julie that we have a Congregational meeting on June 14th to discuss the upcoming celebrations based on the report from Glen. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:15 PM on motion of Lloyd and seconded by Julie.
