VISION
The Mercer Island Schools Foundation is committed to meeting
the educational needs and success of every student. Our goal is
to help provide every student with rigorous, enriching educational
opportunities from kindergarten through high school graduation.
MISSION
In partnership with the Mercer Island School District, we raise and
manage donor funds that provide the Mercer Island School District
with the leverage that provides strategic program investments so
every student has the opportunity to succeed.
The Mercer Island Schools Foundation is the avenue by which the
entire community can contribute. When you invest, you become
part of something special that provides a beacon of light for every
community of what can be accomplished. Together, we will
ensure the success of our next generation.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENTS: On behalf of the Mercer Island Schools Foundation, we would like to thank the entire
Mercer Island community for its investment during the 2014-2015 school year, where together we raised $1,500,000 in funds on behalf of our schools and
all our students. The long-standing tradition of donors, volunteers, teachers, staff, administrators and organizations on Mercer Island coming together to
invest to develop every Mercer Island student’s full potential has produced the best public educational experience in the state of Washington. All of us
who donate to the Foundation invest in our community, in our schools, and in every Mercer Island student’s success.
As we look at the 2015-2016 academic year, it’s time to think about the shared vision we have for our community and the educational experience for all Mercer
Island children. How do we build on our vibrant community? How do we foster rich intellectual and cultural exchanges? How much more can we do as a school
district to become a national beacon of 21st century education? What are the additional investments necessary to prepare our students for a cognitive, digital
and global world? We believe there are exciting opportunities around these questions, and that the Foundation plays a vital role in providing the necessary
leverage for the school district to make the right investments to strengthen and improve Mercer Island’s community for all its citizens.
This year we kick off our Fall Phone-A-Thon campaign to raise $499,300 for strategic K-12 programs in core academics and enrichment. As the district invests in
the latest curriculum and support materials in math, science, literacy, social studies, civics, foreign language, materials science and the fine arts, our donations
through the Foundation enhance the ability to provide the very best on behalf of our students. Enrichment grants allow teachers to pursue innovative ideas, and
professional development programs and mentoring funds provide opportunities for all teachers to develop and excel in their profession.
As we look towards our Fall campaign, we need to continue to build on our shared success, and bridge to an even brighter future. Mercer Island
School District’s administration has been able to offer lower teacher-to-student ratios as compared to our counterparts in the state, supporting our
unique approach to personalized learning. With Washington state beginning to respond to its court-mandated additional funding of basic education,
we have the opportunity to invest in areas ignored during the funding crisis. However, we also know that basic education has never been our goal on
Mercer Island; rather, we must continue to invest in exceptional education, which has defined our community for many years.
Together we can continue to lead in public education for the benefit of our students and community, so that our graduates can shape the course of our
nation and planet. The tradition of thousands of families investing in the Foundation and our schools over years and years has given current residents
an exceptional educational experience across the K-12 spectrum. Our school district’s
administrative and teaching staff has masterfully weaved together a comprehensive
program that rejects compromising on any of the arts, language, STEM, athletics, or
humanities programs in a challenging funding environment, and instead embraces
the whole-child model. We ask you to join us again this year in coming together as a
community to support and invest in the amazing work our school district is doing on
behalf of everyone who lives on Mercer Island.

Last year our K-2 teachers launched a new reading and word-study curriculum: Mondo’s Bookshop Common
Core, funded by donations to the MISF. These new resources encompass all aspects of our comprehensive
literacy philosophy, supporting personalized learning, addressing the needs of students across the learning
spectrum, and targeted professional development for teachers.

their higher understanding of what they were reading. Every day having
a five- or six-year-old answer questions with “In the text, it says...”

readers. It was wonderful!”

teaching is when the students take ownership and leadership of their
learning. With Mondo Bookshop, my students engaged deeply with each
other about the text daily. Words such as: “Can you say that in another
way? I don’t quite understand it.” and “Where
is your text evidence?” and “How does the text
support your thinking?” were heard often in my
second grade classroom during reading time!

reading curriculum into our classrooms!

from camp, and Sam has said the cutest
comments about the story, which clearly
go back to your teaching. Today when listening he mentioned that the
story has a lot of empathy in it. He also told me that the character
is facing some challenges and wondered how he would handle them.
And that he was making a connection with the character. He used the
words from your lessons to express his thinking. It was so sweet, and
I thought you’d be happy to know your literacy lessons are sinking
in.”

MATERIALS SCIENCE
Materials science”Thanks to the support of the Mercer Island Schools Foundation, Mercer Island High School launched another
‘hands-on’ science class this year: Materials Science. Studies show that hands-on, active learning in science boosts students’ performance and leads
to more students choosing science as a career. What is Materials Science? Almost everything we use each day is made from some type of material.
Materials Science studies how those materials are created, used, and improved. It is an engineering field that offers growing opportunities in students’
college and career pathways. The interdisciplinary nature of Materials Science gives students the chance to apply their understanding of biology,
chemistry, and physics to create innovative new materials. Students work with metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, and even biomaterial in their
labs and experiments. Materials Science can prepare students for careers in a wide variety of high-demand, high-wage industries, including:
aerospace, automotive, green technology, biomedicine, biotechnology, energy, and communications. Most research universities (including the University
of Washington) offer majors and graduate programs in Materials Science. In the words of a current senior in the class, ‘It’s cool to understand how all of
this stuff works and learn the scientific principles behind it.’” -Kristine van der Hoeven and Sam Gadbury
“21 Acres taught our students about how they can step up to be true

stewards and advocates for their environment and the world they live in. Our
children were able to experience first-hand what it’s like to work in an organic garden,
and what standards must be met to qualify a garden as organic. They thoroughly
enjoyed the experience of putting their hands into a compost bin filled with worms
and other creatures, plus pulling out old plants and then replanting new starters, as
well as using produce grown in the garden to help them create a healthy kale salad
snack they were able to eat in the LEED certified building. Not only did students
learn techniques to help them better conserve our resources, they also gained a better
understanding of how to more easily use local, fresh resources to help them eat a
well-balanced meal and/or snack. Many students and families later shared about the
impact this field trip has had on home choices, such as eating habits, purchasing
choices, creation of healthier cleaning products, etc.” -Lindsay Oliveira

“In second grade I was diagnosed with Central Auditory Processing Disorder. During my
freshman year at MIHS I found myself struggling to keep up, not only with the volume of
reading but also my ability to interpret and comprehend diverse, increasingly complicated
material. Miss Confalone recommended the audiobook program to provide technical and
physical reinforcement in reading skills and comprehension, allowing me to embrace reading
as pleasurable and a favored pastime. I went from barely surviving to excelling as a proud
member of the Honor Society. I cannot express how thankful I am to the community and the
Foundation for having the foresight to support this small but powerful program. You gave me
the opportunity to succeed at every step from first grade to my graduation day!” -Leah Fisk
